• Mapping an amazon server to a domain name registered with name.com

  I have an amazon S3 web server and a domain name registered in name.com (the name is sam-experiments.com). I am trying to have a static page hosted on the amazon web server to be displayed on http://www.sam-experiments.com On the web server side, my bucket name is 'www.sam-experiments.com', and it links to here: http://www.sam-experiments.com.s3-website-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/ On name.com, I added a new record with the followin characteristics: Record Type: CNAME Record Host: www.sam-experiments.com Record Answer: www.sam-experiments.com.s3.amazonaws.com. (as specified in the documentation here: http://docs.amazonwebservices.com/AmazonS3/latest/dev/VirtualHosting.html#VirtualHostingCustomURLs) TTL: 300 However, nothing gets displayed on www.sam-experiments.com, and I am not able to find what I am doing wrong.   I'd like to do a Regex.Split on some separators but I'd like to keep the separators. To give an example of what I'm trying: "abc[s1]def[s2][s3]ghi" --> "abc", "[s1]", "def", "[s2]", "[s3]", "ghi" The regular expression I've come up with is new Regex("\\[|\\]|\\]\\["). However, this gives me the following: "abc[s1]def[s2][s3]ghi" --> "abc", "s1", "def", "s2", "", "s3", "ghi" The separators have disappeared (which makes sense given my regex). Is there a way to write the regex so that the separators themselves are preserved?

• JasperReports reports access image via authenticated URL

  Hi all, I am hoping that this is a simple issue with a simple solution and that I have missed something obvious. Let me explain the problem; We have an application that generates PDF reports (using Jasper). These reports contain data from our database, as well as imagery (photographs). These photographs are stored in S3. We use signed URLs to access these photographs. We link these photographs into our Jasper reports using these S3 URLs. Because the S3 URLs are signed and time-limited (by design), the process is as follows; User requests a report to be generated, Report is filled, and goes to our database (at which time UUIDs to any required images are retrieved), For each UUID an S3 signed URL must be generated, To do this the URL behind each report image is a call to an authenticated URL in our app (/get_img?uuid=foo), The controller behind this URL generates a signed S3 URL and returns it, Reports loads the image. The problem is with step (4) - the call to the authenticated URL fails because Jasper does not pass any authentication information with the request. Is there a solution here? • AWS EC2 Oracle RDB - Storing and managing my data

  When create an Oracle Database on the Amazon cloud you will need to store you database files somewhere on the EC2 cloud. There are basically three places where database files can be stored: 1. Local drive - This is the local drive that is part of the virtual server EC2 instance. 2. Elastic Block Storage (EBS) - Network attached storage that appears as a local drive. 3. Simple Storage Server (S3) - 'Storage for the Internet'. S3 is not high speed and intended for store static document type files. S3 can also be used for storing static web page files. Local drives are ephemeral so not appropriate to be used as a database storage device. The leaves EBS which is the best place to store database files. EBS volumes appear as local disk drives. They are actually network-attached to an Amazon EC2 instance. In addition, EBS persists independently from the running life of a single Amazon EC2 instance. If you use an EBS backed instance for your database data, it will remain available after reboot but not after terminate. In many cases you would not need to terminate your instance but only stop it, which is equivalent of shutdown. In order to save your database data before you terminate an instance, you can snapshot the EBS to S3. Using EBS as a data store you can move your Oracle data files from one instance to another. This allows you to move your database from one region or or zone to another. Unfortunately, to scale out your Oracle RDS on AWS you can not have read only replicas. This is only possible with the other Oracle relational database - MySQL. The free micro instances use EBS as its storage. This is a very good white paper that has more details: AWS Storage Options This white paper also discusses: SQS, SimpleDB, and Amazon RDS in the context of storage devices. I noticed that DiskStation Manager v2.3 provides various options including Amazon S3 and rsync: Does anybody have some real usage against cost statistics for Amazon's S3 service? How is sensitive data protected on Amazon S3? Are there any rsync online backup options? If so, what do people recommend? • How to start a s3ql script automatically on boot?

  I've been experimenting with s3ql on Ubuntu 10.04, using it to mount Amazon S3 buckets. However, I'd really like it to mount them automatically. Does anyone know how to do that? I've been working on a script, which works when its run from from the commandline, but for some reason I can't get it to run automatically on boot. Does anyone have any ideas?   Backup (Deja Dup) failed to do an initial backup to my Amazon S3, and despite my best Googling efforts, I could not find a solution : ( Here's the error message: BackendException: Error uploading s3+http://deja-dup-auto-akiaiksyiqi3buaaz26a/My-Archive/duplicity-full.20130805T143807Z.vol1.difftar.gpg I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on a System76. • Shared to Dedicated or Amazon CloudFront to improve performances and keep secured?

  I have a Wordpress which currently takes about 1.8s to 2.5s for the home page to completely load in my country. The page weight is about 700Ko (static content included). In order to increase performances, I'm considering two solutions: Switching to a dedicated host. Using amazon s3 cloudfront to serve static contents. My current shared hosting have servers in a neighboring country but not exactly in mine, and both amazon and the dedicated hosting have some, so that's already an advantage. So considering all that, I still have three questions remaining: Currently having a low traffic (100 unique visitors/days, but growing) will it make a huge difference between my shared hosting and a dedicated server ? Knowing that I already use a cookie-less domain to deliver static contents (but using a redirection to the same server), would using amazon s3 make a real difference ? Talking about the cons of dedicated vs amazon s3, if I choose for the dedicated server something like Ubuntu server and do daily package updates and have only port 80 open, would it be sufficient in terms of security (in comparison with my current shared hosting which manage everything for me) ?

I was trying to install the store image through WebUI.   Lets say, i want to restrict a file to my visitors. I mean , i have an xx.avi file to be streamed/downloaded, and the visitor paid me for the bandwidth and the size of the file. In amazon s3, i cant control the file at all .(there is a very basic control thing which is not ok for me) Only way is my server can proxy the file, like it fetches the file from amazon s3 storagenode and send it to the owner with authentication approval by a php script. But this way i would double up the bandwidth usage and again there would be latency problem since my server needs to get the file from amazon s3. So i was wondering if there is a better solution or any cloud storage service that lets us to control the file restriction to my visitors. Thanks

• AJAX Uploading - Not waiting for response before continuing

  I'm using Blueimp's jQuery Uploader (very good it is too btw) and an S3 handler to upload files and then transfer them to S3 via the S3 API (from the PHP SDK). It works. The problem is, on large files (1GB) it can take anything up to a a few minutes to transfer (via create-object) onto S3. The PHP file that does this is hung-up until this process is complete. The problem is, the uploader (which utilises the jQuery Ajax method) seems to give up waiting and start again everytime. I have thought this was related to PHP INI 'max_input_time' or such, as it seemed to wait around 60 seconds, though this now appears to vary. I have upped the max_input_time in PHP INI and others related - but no further. I've also considered (the more likely) that JS, either in the script or the jQuery method has a timeout. The developer (blueimp) has said there's no such timeout in the front-end script, nor have I seen any and though 'timeout' is referenced in the jQuery Ajax method options, it seems to affect the entire time it uploads rather than the wait for a response - so that's not much use. Any help or guidance gratefully received.

• Simple Backup Strategy for Amazon EC2 instances / volumes?

  You have entered Introductory Backups for Amazon EC2 EBS-backed Windows Images 010... I have been browsing my brains out to find a simple backup strategy for our single windows 2008 server running SharePoint Services. This is an EBS-backed image of one server with one data volume. I don’t need anything exotic. I only need a “daily” backup (losing a day’s worth of data is not catastrophic). We have created and saved an EBS backed AMI image (Windows 2008) we are comfortable using. We started off making backups by simply creating a new EBS AMI image. This is really simple, but the running server is put offline during the first 10 – 15 minutes of creating the image – not ideal. The standard way of creating backups would seem to be creating snapshots of volumes attached to a running instance. Again it’s pretty simple and the server remains usable during the snapshot generation. The apparent Catch-22 is that you can’t simply launch a new instance directly from a snapshot. I know how to bundle a running instance to S3 storage and then register the AMI from the S3 bucket. This does allow me to capture a backup of a running instance and, if the running instance is lost, register the AMI from the S3 bucket and launch the new AMI to recover the instance, but this seems really convoluted and it seems ridiculous to have to juggle back and forth between the AWS Console and the S3 Organizer plug-in for Firefox to get this accomplished. (Please don't mention the command line approach, this is an 010 level course). From playing around with EBS-backed images, the following approach appears to work for me (all done within the AWS Console): 1.For your backups, simply snapshot the system volume (/dev/sda1) as needed. 2.If you lose your running instance, do the following: a.Create a new volume from your last snapshot backup b.Launch another instance of your starting AMI (must be EBS-backed) c.Stop this instance. d.Detach the existing system volume from the new stopped instance and discard. e.Attach the newly created volume as system volume (/dev/sda1) to the stopped instance. f.Re-start the new instance. I have tested this out a couple of times and it seems to work for me. Question: Is there anything wrong with this approach?

  I want to backup my AWS snapshots to a completely separate AWS account for additional security (if my AWS credentials were acquired someone could delete all my snapshots and volumes). But I'm a bit stumped on how to do this. There doesn't seem to be a way to store a volume or snapshot in S3 such that another user could access that data in s3 and store it in a separate AWS account. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to acheive this? Thanks

The favicon is now hosted off of amazon S3 but it appears somewhere we still have a link to the old one that I can't find anywhere (I'm a new employee here so I'm not too familiar with things). How can I do a grep search for favicon.ico that doesn't start with http://s3.amazon.com ?
