  • Dual Monitor (Monitor and TV)

    I connected TV to my computer, and trying to set dual display. Whatever resolution I choose for my second display (TV) I get message like this: The selected configuration for displays could not be applied required virtual size does not fit available size: requested=(2704, 1050), minimum=(320, 200), maximum=(1680, 1680) How can I fix this? Also, while I was experimenting system went to deadlock, I restarted and after boot monitor just turns off once system is up.   • No sound through hdmi to TV

    I have a Toshiba Satellite Laptop Model P745-S4102 with Intel integrated graphics and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS installed recently. When I connect my HDMI TV to it I only get video through it and no audio. In the System Settings - Sound, there is no option to select HDMI as the output. I read other threads in this site and it seems like at least guys had HDMI option but no sound. I don't even get that. Please help!!

    I have recently upgraded to Office 2010 at work and there are a few things that are a real problem for me. As a T-SQL developer and SQL Server DBA I copy and paste code to and from various applications and if Word gets involved it can has disastrous consequences. There is an option that appears to be defaulted to "on" that changes a straight quote to what Word describes as a smart quote - see the image below.   • The dreaded Brightness issue (Fn keys + Max brightness)

    I'm trying to get some control over the brightness of my Samsung QX411 (Integrated Intel and discrete Nvidia, though Ubuntu doesn't see the latter yet, I'll play around with Bumblebee later) Using the FN+up/down lowers the screen brightness from max to one peg down or back up. If I try to bring the brightness down any more, it just flickers and stays the same. I can lower the brightness in Settings, but that's delicate and gets reverted to max if I open up the brightness settings again, or log out. The closest I got was adding acpi_backlight=vendor to a line in /etc/default/grub, (source) I could consequently lower the brightness a couple of pegs down to the minimum with FN+down, but then it's as if the problem got inversed, and I'd get stuck in the bottom tier, I could only increase the brightness by one peg and back down. Rebooting would revert to max brightness. acpi_osi=, acpi_osi=Linux, acpi_osi=vendor, acpi_osi='!Windows 2012', acpi_backlight=Linux, acpi_backlight='!Windows 2012' don't do anything for me. I've also tried adding echo 2000 > /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness to /etc/rc.local, where my max value from cat /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness is 4648, which didn't do anything. (same result with echo 2000 > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness) source Samsung tools also didn't help in this regard. I've spent hours on this, it's getting quite frustrating. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Wake laptop when lid is opened?

    I have a SAMSUNG laptop, which by the experience in the last months, has been a great one. I am actually implementing some functionality to it, and since I noticed, I am able to wake up my laptop from sleep by just opening the lid on Windows 7, however, I need to press to power button to wake up in Ubuntu. Using a program called i-nex, I noted that the kernel DOES dettect a "lid switch", and I am looking forward to use it to wake up function. Any ideas? UPDATE: Thanks @yossile for bringing up some clues! However, output of command cat /proc/acpi/wakeup does not show the LID device. I still tried the second set of commands you gave me with no effect. Then I tried experimenting, guessing that LID should be named by other value, so I tried enabling the others. No victory so far. But I noticed that devices that did not have any pci listings were disabled at all time no matter what I tried.   • Bad sectors, S.M.A.R.T., SpinRite, firmware on platter and drive id questions.

    Is it possible for S.M.A.R.T. to give false readings (say I was fiddling with lots of recovery programs, transfers, so on and so forth) or is it absolutely a read-only direct correlation to the physical status of a drive? Does SpinRite level 5 "recover bad sectors" operate on those marked at the factory? Are they on the same level as your generic bad sector, with SpinRite thus having full access? (Also I'm curious if SMART's bad sector count is zero'd afterward or if it includes factory marked sectors.) The main firmware of some drives, like a WD Passport is stored on the platter. How is it protected? Is it through marking them as bad sectors? If so, I'm wondering if SpinRite's sector recovery could bring about firmware corruption on these drives. Is the failure of a drive to report valid identity information (hdparm -I /dev/xx) consistent with corrupted firmware, or just general disk failure? I may be misunderstanding the role of firmware here. I feel I've read a drive's identity information is on the platter, just like the partition tables and so on. Is this true? (Apologizes if this is more appropriate for SuperUser.)

  • smartctl not returning on HBA that's secure-erasing a different drive

    Whenever I run smartctl -i /dev/sd* where * is a drive that is plugged into the same host bus adapter as another drive that is currently being erased with an hdparm secure erase command, the smart command will just 'hang' and not return (blocked) until the erasure of the other drive is finished. To make matters worse you can't cntrl-c out of it. Has anyone else had this issue? Is there another way to retrieve smart data from a drive, which doesn't block? I noticed that I can still use the udevadm command to retrieve the serial and model of the drive which is useful but doesn't appear to have any smart data. Any information relating to this matter is appreciated, especially if you can tell me another way to retrieve the S.M.A.R.T data that might work. Regards, Stuart

  • How to force a remap of sectors reported in S.M.A.R.T C5 (Current Pending Sector Count)?

    The S.M.A.R.T C5 value of my Samsung HM640JJ Hard Drive (in an HP Pavilion dv6 laptop) is "yellow status = caution" C5 was 10 yesterday, and it's 21 today. C4 (Reallocation Event Count) = 0 and 05 (Reallocated Sectors Count) = 0 How can I force the firmware to reallocate them? I removed the partitions, recreated them again and formatted the entire drive. I ran chkdsk /r /f I ran the BIOS disk check utility and other diagnose/repair tools

  • Streaming in justin.tv using Ubuntu 11.10

    I used to streaming videos in justin.tv..using Windows 7 and I had no problems. But a month ago, I installed Ubuntu 11.10 (32 bits) in my notebook and now I can't streaming videos. The problem is that when I click on the button "Go Live!", it´s supposed that the screen where I have to clic on "Allow" it should appear, but it doesn't. The web only displays the message: "You can't start until you click allow below.", but the "allow button" doesn't appear, instead of that I only see a black screen. I guessed that it was a problem with the Adobe Flash Player, but I have the lastest version for Linux installed and I have no problems with Youtube. Also, my webcam works without problem in others Ubuntu's applications. I hope you can help me.   • ustream and justin.tv don't work, UTube and bitgravity are fine

    Can anyone explain this? On this laptop, ustream and justin.tv don't work - just get a blank screen. But UTube and bitgravoty work fine (also flash based). 64-bit windows 7 - but I have 64-bit windows 7 on my desktop machine and everything works fine there. Good place to test is here http://live.twit.tv/ where the bitgravity feeds work fine, but ustream and justin.tv don't.
