• Advice about a good Java book?

  Hi people, I am new to Java but have experience programming in C/C++/C#. I wanted to learn Java SE 6 first before moving to Java EE 6. After making some research online for appropriate Java SE 6 books, I found that these are appropriate for me to get an excellent idea of Java SE 6: 1) Head First Java, 2nd Edition 2) An Intermediate Level Book <----------- 3) Effective Java (2nd Edition) 4) Java Concurrency in Practice 5) Java Generics and Collections 6) Java Concise Reference Series: Swing And AWT 7) Java Reflection in Action However, I am having trouble choosing an Intermediate Level Book which will provide me with breadth and depth in Java SE 6. I was thinking about the book "Thinking in Java (4th Edition)"....Unfortunately, its deals with Java SE 5 and not the latest version. • Axis Aligned Billboard: how to make the object look at camera

  I am trying to make an Axis Aligned Billboard with Pyglet. I have looked at several tutorials, but they only show me how to get the Up,Right,and Look vectors. So far this is what I have: target = cam.pos look = norm( target - billboard.pos ) right = norm( Vector3(0,1,0)*look ) up = look*right gluLookAt( look.x, look.y, look.z, self.pos.x, self.pos.y, self.pos.z, up.x, up.y, up.z ) This does nothing for me visibly. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

• Múltiples clientes en el mismo Oracle UCM

  Estamos muy activos con la implantación de plataformas ECM que den servicio a múltiples clientes. Consiguiendo 2 objetivos muy importantes:El cliente final puede pagar al proveedor por una plataformas ECM como servicio (SaaS). Y, lógicamente, se ahorra en complejidad y gastos de infraestructura, administración, formación, almacenamiento, etc...Hemos estado explicando estos días el modelo Master-Proxy de Oracle UCM con el que podemos implantar este tipo de plataformas. No siempre será la solución más adecuada porque a veces vamos a querer disponer de plataformas compartidas, pero con clientes completamente aislados. Siempre, la consola de migración nos permite exportar e importar componentes, metadatos, contenidos, workflows, etc... para que elijamos el modelo más adecuado para cada caso.Pero, ¿Cómo funciona?. Podéis ver en la imágen que se basa en la instalación de varias instancias de UCM y configurarlas de forma que varias de ellas se comporten como "Master" (digo varias para conseguir alta disponibilidad), y el resto se comporten como "Proxy" (también varias instancias de UCM pueden comportarse como un mismo "Proxy" permitiendo balancear la carga en función de que cada cliente requiera más o menos rendimiento). Esta configuración (que vemos en la imágen adjunta), nos permite:Delegar la gestión de usuarios de cada cliente. Los usuarios del Master podrán acceder a todos los Proxies, pero los usuarios de cada proxy sólo acceden a su repositorio.Delegar funcionalidad y componentes. Es posible configurar diferentes funcionalidades en cada proxy de forma que algunos servidores estén especializados en Web Content Management, otros en Document Management (por ejemplo).Diferentes modelos de metadatos. Podemos modelar unos tipos documentales generales para toda la plataforma y otros particulares diferentes en cada UCM "Proxy".Conseguir una centralización de búsquedas y acceso a repositorios de documentación con diferentes juegos de caracteres.   Oracle has released new updates that patch 40 security holes in their Java Runtime Environment software. Anyone who needs or actively uses the Java Runtime Environment for work or gaming should promptly update their Java installation as soon as possible. One thing to keep in mind is that there are limitations placed on updates for older versions of Java as shown in the following excerpt. If you are using an older version, then it is recommended that you update to the Java SE 7 release if possible (depending on your usage circumstances). From the The H Security blog post: Only the current version of Java, Java SE 7, will be updated for free; downloads of the new version, Java SE 7 Update 25, are available and existing installs should auto-update. • ¿Como puedo instalar Age of Mythology en Ubuntu? - How I can install Age of Mythology on Ubuntu?

  Spanish: Tengo un problema al tratar de instalar Age of Mythology Gold Edition (v 1.03). Al iniciarle con el Wine (1.3.28) en mi Ubuntu 11.10, y después de ingresar el serial y pulsar Siguiente, me sale un error "No se puede cargar PidGen.dll", y se regresa a la ventana anterior. En Configurar Wine, y en la pestaña Librerías le añadí el archivo DLL que me pide pero todo sigue igual. He intentado todo para que se instale pero no funciona. También he intentado instalarlo en una maquina virtual de VMware Workstation 8.0.1 con Microsoft Windows XP SP3 y me sale un error de compatibilidad con la tarjeta de vídeo: "Tarjeta de vídeo 0: vmx_fb.dll VMware SVGA II Vendor(0x15AD) Device(0x405)" y se cierra el Age of Mythology. Me parece que la solución en este caso seria aumentar la cantidad de vídeo que pone a disposición el VMware a la maquina virtual o un driver para esta tarjeta, pero no se como hacer eso. O tal vez alguien sabe la manera de que mi tarjeta de vídeo que tiene mi computadora se use también para VMware o destinar parte de la memoria del vídeo a la maquina virtual. He buscado en varios sitios, pero ninguno soluciona mi problema. Por favor, si alguien ya encontró la respuesta, que responda a esta pregunta, y de antemano gracias. • Roadshow Microsoft – Primeira Parada: Londrina, PR

  Hoje (23/03) tivemos aqui em Londrina a primeira parada do Roadshow Microsoft, com apresentação de diversos produtos com aplicação em cenários técnicos. Como já é de costume, o evento reuniu alguns dos melhores profissionais de DEV e INFRA, com informações extremamente úteis sobre .NET Framework 4, Entity Framework, Exchange, Sharepoint, entre outras tecnologias e produtos. Na minha visão, o evento conseguiu atender a expectativa dos participantes, através dos cenários técnicos criados para a ficticia Adventure Works (acho que eu conheço esta empresa… :). Através da participação ativa de todos, as tracks de DEV e INFRA tiveram o sucesso aparente no comentário do pessoal nos intervalos e almoço. Depois das palestras, lá por 19h, tivemos um jantar com o pessoal da Microsoft e influenciadores da região, onde, até as 21h, discutimos muita coisa (até Commerce Server!). Esta aproximação com o time de comunidades da Microsoft, além de alguns “penetras” como o próprio Alex disse, é extremamente importante e útil, visto que passamos conhecemos a fundo as intenções e futuras ações da Microsoft visando as comunidades locais. Para concluir, algo que sempre digo: participe de alguma comunidade técnica da sua região. Entre em contato com influenciadores, conheça os grupos de usuários perto de você e não perca tempo. Ter o conhecimento perto de você, contribuir e crescer profissionalmente não tem preço. Obrigado novamente a todo time, em especial a Fabio Hara, Rodrigo Dias, Alex Schulz, Alvaro Rezende, Murilo e Renato Haddad. Abraços. • Renovación de equipos antiguos y los TCO

  Acabo de ver un vídeo de Oracle sobre las ventajas económicas y de eficiencia que aportan los programas en marcha de renovación de base instalada. Con los recientes anuncios de los SPARC T4 y SuperCluster las ventajas se refuerzan. Y en España sigue habiendo una importante base instalada de sistemas Sun en la sanidad. En el vídeo me ha llamado la atención que se destaque algo que casi nunca se hace: el reciclado de los sistemas antiguos. Son tres minutos y medio y es muy fácil de seguir por sus grafismos y por el inglés muy entendible con que se expresa el presentador. Al final, estamos hablando de TCO, el cada vez más famoso Coste Total de Propiedad, tema que cada vez debería de tomar peso a la hora de las decisiones sobre el coste de adquisición. Prueba de ello es que el gobierno de Gran Bretaña ha publicado una primera guía de criterios de consideración a la hora del cálculo del TCO de productos de software. Animo a echarle un vistazo, porque pone en papel organizadamente lo que todos conocemos, pero que siempre es bueno tenerlo sistematizado.

  al momento de instalar el ubuntu me equivoque seleccionar el disco (en este caso quise instalar en el disco e:/) pero casi finalizar la instalacion ve dio error (cd defectuoso, grabe el cd en menos velocidad intente desde usb o error en el disco) inicie con windows xp y el disco D:/ no se muestra ci con el visor de ubuntu (probar desde cd) y no se ve mis archivos se formateo todo el disco. quiero recuperar mis datos. mi pc no da boot desde usb. gracias de antmano

• Membership Provider Parte 1

  Asp.net ha sido una de las tecnologías creadas por Microsoft de mas rápido crecimiento por la facilidad para los desarrolladores de crear sitios web. Una de las partes de mayor importancia que tiene asp.net es el contar con el Membership Provider o proveedor de Membrecía, que permite la creación, manejo y mantenimiento de un sistema completo de control y autenticación de usuarios. Para dar inicio a la serie de post que escribiré sobre que es Membeship y cuáles son las funcionalidades principales daremos unas definiciones. Tal como se menciono anteriormente con el membership provider podemos crear un sistema de control de usuarios completos, entre las funcionalidades principales podemos encontrar: * Creación de usuarios * Almacenamiento de información en base de datos * Autenticación, bloqueos y seguimiento Otras de las ventajas que cabe resaltar, es que, algunos de los controles de asp.net ya traen "naturalmente" en sus funciones la implementación del membership provider, tal como el control "Login" o los controles de estado de usuario, lo cual nos permite que con solo arrastrarlos al diseñador estén funcionando. Membership provider es poderoso, pero su funcionalidad y seguridad se ven aumentadas cuando se integra con otros proveedores de asp.net como lo son RoleProvider y Profile Provider (estos los discutiremos en otros post). En la siguiente figura, podemos ver como se distribuyen algunoS provider creados por Microsoft Antes de iniciar con la implementación de membership debes conocer cosas básicas como el espacio de nombres al que pertenece, el cual es: System.Web.Security que se encuentra dentro del ensamblado System.Web. Algo que debe tomarse en cuenta, es que, para poder utilizar cualquiera de los miembros de la clase, debemos hacer la referencia respectiva. Por defecto, el membership provider está diseñado para trabajar directamente con SQL Server, de ahí que su nombre completo seria SQL Membership Provider. Sin embargo, debido a su gran flexibilidad podemos extenderlo a cualquier base de datos o bien modificarlo para adapatarlo a nuestras necesidades. En los siguientes posts, discutiremos como crear un proveedor personalizado utilizando Entity Framework, separando las capas de acceso y datos y cuáles son las principales funciones que podemos aplicar.   Hi! I'm currently developing for an application (www.domain.se, .eu) where we're experiencing problems with sessions not propagating across domains. Internet Explorer is the root cause of this, as it will differentiate sessions depending on whether we're typing in "domain.se" or "www.domain.se". Due to some unfortunate redirecting, we're not able to keep the user on the same address the user typed in, instead we're always redirecting to www.domain.se on login. Needless to say, IE users can not login when typing "domain.se". To make this error go away, we implemented a function to try and set the session to be valid across all possible domains by doing the following: if($_SERVER['HTTP_HOST'] == "domain.se") { session_set_cookie_params(3600, '/', '.domain.se', true); } There are basically a few if:s that we go through depending on what address the user typed in, but the third argument stays the same. This, however, results in no-one being able to log in, regardless of domain. I've tried reading up on how session_set_cookie_params() works but to no avail. Any help is greatly appreciated!

  Consider a situation. I have an in-proc COM server that contains two COM classes. Both classes are marked as "no threading model" in the registry - the "ThreadingModel" value is just absent. Both classes read/write the same set of global variable without any synchronization. As far as I know "no threading model" will enforce COM to disallow concurrent access to the same or different instances of the same class by different threads. Will COM prevent concurrent access to instances of the two abovementioned different classes? Do I need synchronization when accessing the global variables from two different COM classes in this situation?

  I am trying to create a tool that I can upload different types of files "csv", Excel, XML and load those files into a FileStream column in the database as "Source" untouched over the web. Then using SSIS on the server I want to create a package that will process that file to be loaded into other tables to be used by the web application. Is it possible to have SSIS read a file from FileStream column? if so how?

  So I have a uipicker view, that I have managed to load some data from my db into. I would like to update a textview, which is right above the pickerview, with each changing of the row. Is that possible? If I don't have to, I would like to avoid pushing a button in order to show the respective text. Can I make it so that the value in the text field changes with the value of the rowselected in the pickerview, in real time? Any thoughts or code snippets would be appreciated. Thanks!

• Is there a way to only backup a SQL 2005 database structure fully, but only the data in a certain se

  I have several schemas in my database, and the largest one ("large" meaning disk space consumed) is my "web" schema which is a denormalized copy of data in the operational schemas. This denormalized data is able to be reconstructed at anytime, and is merely there for extremely fast read purposes. Since the data is redundant, and VERY large - I'd like to exclude it from being backed up. I already have stored procedures that can regenerate all of the data in that schema in a couple of hours - for use in the event of a failure. I assume I can split the tables in this schema out to another data file or such (ideally even on another drive for faster reads), but is there a way to never have that data file backup, yet still in the event of a failure its structure could be restored (and other DDL stuff like procs, views, etc)? Somewhat related, can I also have these tables not do transaction logging, if I go to "Full" backup mode for the rest of the database?
