  • smartctl not returning on HBA that's secure-erasing a different drive

    Whenever I run smartctl -i /dev/sd* where * is a drive that is plugged into the same host bus adapter as another drive that is currently being erased with an hdparm secure erase command, the smart command will just 'hang' and not return (blocked) until the erasure of the other drive is finished. To make matters worse you can't cntrl-c out of it. Has anyone else had this issue? Is there another way to retrieve smart data from a drive, which doesn't block? I noticed that I can still use the udevadm command to retrieve the serial and model of the drive which is useful but doesn't appear to have any smart data. Any information relating to this matter is appreciated, especially if you can tell me another way to retrieve the S.M.A.R.T data that might work. Regards, Stuart

    Has anyone used the blog engine SimplePHPBlog? It is a simple blog engine that uses only text files (no database). My problem with it is that the content directory where the texts files are stored appears to require being world writeable/readable (i.e. permission 777) for it to work. This means anyone can access the text files with a browser! These text files include the blog/comment poster's IP and email address! This is not secure or good practice, right?

    I want to create an usb stick which contains an ubuntu installation that: can be used as a working environment (Covered in: How do I install Ubuntu to a USB key?) - ie the ubuntu installation on the stick must provide an accessible home folder. They are all generated & stored with KeePassX, which can be synced to different computers and my android phone via dropbox (or ubuntuone). I know the database of KeePassX is secure (at least with a good passphrase). But what about when I am copying the password into the clipboard (where it is stored for 5 seconds)? Can any program running in user-space access the clipboard and store the password? If so, how big of a security risk is this?

I have not made any other changes to the router, Ubuntu or the tomcat install, everything else has remained standard.     We have a hidden file with a space at the end of the file name. Usually, I take ownership of the file, then use a command line rename with the 8.3 (dir/x) file name. However, rename doesn't acknowledge hidden or system files. Any ideas on how to remove it? The original creator cannot access the file. The system is a Windows 2003 server with NTFS and SMB file sharing (normal windows file sharing).

    I'm using Google Chrome and want to delete the current session data on the fly. I can do this on Firefox with the web developer extension, but Chrome doesn't seem to have the same option in their webdev extension. So how can I do this? I realize that session data is stored on the server side and tracked in the browser with cookies. So really, I think what I want to do is delete cookies that are set to live for the session lifetime. Is there a way to do THAT in Chrome? "Delete browsing data" lets me delete all cookies from within a certain time period (for example, the last hour), but that could delete OTHER cookies on the site that I don't want to erase. I just want to delete the cookie being used to track my current session. Thanks y'all...

The CtrlAltDelete is being intercepted by Windows 8, regardless of whether the remote desktop has focus or is in full screen. I'm remoting in to a Windows XP machine, and I've tried launching Remote Desktop through both the desktop and the Modern UI. How can I send a CtrlAltDelete? I was just trying to set some shortcut keys, and wanted to use Alt + Shift + P for Anywho.com, but to my surprise Alt + Shift + P is already taken. It calls Windows Media Player. Now I like WMP and will use it a lot, but I want my Alt + Shift + P for AnyWho.com. BTW I have PC Magazine's Hotkey Detective 2 (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,5082,00.asp), but it doesn't show that Alt + Shift + P is taken. How to do this?
