  • Problem with ubuntu 10.10 running from USB drive

    Hi Geeks, I recently downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 and created an USB drive with that. I started to run the Ubuntu from that USB drive. But I am facing so much problem. I am thinking why its not so much easy like Windows to do all my job in ubuntu. Always I get some error message or to install something. This time I am getting the following errors. I am trying to download and install Aircrack-ng. So used the command sudo apt-get install aircrack-ng. But the installation stops with the following error : update-initramfs: deferring update (trigger activated) cp: cannot stat `/vmlinuz': No such file or directory dpkg: error processing bcmwl-kernel-source (--configure): subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 Errors were encountered while processing: initramfs-tools bcmwl-kernel-source E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) I don't even have the aptitude command installed till now. Are all these errors because of I am running the ubuntu from USB drive? Is there any simple and easy way to go to Ubuntu Software Center and download all the required essentials at one shot and then Aircrack-ng? I could not find the Aircrack-ng in Ubuntu Software Center Can anybody give me detail steps to solve all my problems above. I am frustrated searching for updates and installations. When something works and something does not work. Can anybody suggest me how I should proceed after installing ubuntu to run on a USB drive. So that I can use the OS like Windows. Like software download,wireless driver, sound, video, documents, C:, D: all things should be there. Please somebody help.

    It seems that when trying to install any package which requires the creation of a system User and Group, the installer fails with the error: install: invalid user 'username' When it happened the first time, I assumed it was related to the package, or it's installation script. But now I am attempting a different package, and alas, the same issue arises! note: /etc/passwd and /etc/group is not chattr -i Here is the example output from an attempted installation (of varnish): Selecting previously unselected package varnish. Unpacking varnish (from .../varnish_3.0.2-1ubuntu0.1_amd64.deb) ... Processing triggers for man-db ... Setting up libvarnishapi1 (3.0.2-1ubuntu0.1) ... I also tried downloading the package directly from launchpad.net and running dpkg -i on it (this had worked for a similar issue with a kernel upgrade), but to no avail. I'm not actually particularly interested in what's going on with mysql, per se (though I will need to figure it out at some time); at this point, my primary concern is that I am unable to apt-get install other packages! What to do?

  • Cant finish upgrade from 11.10 to 12 on VPS based on Parallels Virtuozzo Containers, due to libc6

    I was stuck with this problem near the end of an upgrade: WARNING: this version of the GNU libc requires kernel version 2.6.24 or later. Please upgrade your kernel before installing glibc. The installation of a 2.6 kernel could ask you to install a new libc first, this is NOT a bug, and should NOT be reported. In that case, please add lenny sources to your /etc/apt/sources.list and run: apt-get install -t lenny linux-image-2.6 Their suggested stepds dont work on VPS, and after googling, I came up to this: Why did my upgrade to 12.04 fail with "glibc not found" or "libc6" or "requires kernel 2.6.24" error? There is comment by izx which explains my problem and proposes a workaround (might take a while to convince the guys to upgrade the kernel..).   • Ubuntu 12.04 Hp G72 Problem Installing proprietary wireless driver

    I have a fresh Ubuntu 12.04 installed on HP G72 machine. In order for my wireless to work I need the proprietary driver installed - Broadcom STA wireless driver. Trying to install it from the System Settings gives me the error: "Sorry, installation of this driver failed. Please have a look at the log file for details: /var/log/jockey.log". So far I suspect the error to be caused by the bad "bcmwl-kernel-source" installation. What i tried: 1. remove "bcmwl-kernel-source" 2. install "bcmwl-kernel-source" installation through the terminal ends with "error code (1)".     An example: a permit must be examined by two lawyers and one engineer. If any of those three reject it, the process enters a "rejected" end state. If all three grant the permit, it enters a "granted" end state. All three examiners may examine simultaneously, or in any order. Once one engineer has granted it, it shouldn't be available to be examined by an engineer; once two lawyers have examined it, it shouldn't be available to lawyers; once one engineer and two lawyers have examined it should go to the granted end state. My initial thinking is that either I have a overly complicated state transition diagram, with "the same" intermediate states multiply repeated, or I carry (external) state with the process { bool rejected; int engineerSignoffId; int lawyer1SignoffId; int lawyer2SignoffId}. Or something like this? If so, how does the engineer's rejection terminate the subprocess that is in "Lawyers"? START->FORK->Engineer->Granted?---------------->Y->JOIN-->Granted |->Lawyers-->Granted?->by 2 lawyers?->Y---^ ^ | |--------------------------N What's the canonical jBPM answer to this?     I have a bash script that I am modifying to accept key=value pairs from stdin. (It is spawned by xinetd.) How can I safely convert those key=value pairs into environment variables for subprocesses? I plan to only allow keys that begin with a predefined prefix "CMK_", to avoid IFS or any other "dangerous" variable getting set. But the simplistic approach function import () { local IFS="=" while read key val; do case "$key" in CMK_*) eval "$key=$val";; esac done } is horribly insecure because $val could contain all sorts of nasty stuff. This seems like it would work: shopt -s extglob function import () { NORMAL_IFS="$IFS" local IFS="=" while read key val; do case "$key" in CMK_*([a-zA-Z_]) ) IFS="$NORMAL_IFS" eval $key='$val' IFS="=" ;; esac done } but (1) it uses the funky extglob thing that I've never used before, and (2) it's complicated enough that I can't be comfortable that it's secure. My goal, to be specific, is to allow key=value settings to pass through the bash script into the environment of called processes. It is up to the subprocesses to deal with potentially hostile values getting set. I am modifying someone else's script, so I don't want to just convert it to Perl and be done with it. I would also rather not change it around to invoke the subprocesses differently, something like #!/bin/sh ...start of script... perl -nle '($k,$v)=split(/=/,$_,2); $ENV{$k}=$v if $k =~ /^CMK_/; END { exec("subprocess") }' ...end of script...

    I'd like to call Python's distutils' or setuptools' setup() function in a slightly unconventional way, but I'm not sure whether distutils is meant for this kind of usage. As an example, let's say I currently have a 'setup.py' file, which looks like this (lifted verbatim from the distutils docs--the setuptools usage is almost identical): from distutils.core import setup setup(name='Distutils', version='1.0', description='Python Distribution Utilities', author='Greg Ward', author_email='[email protected]', url='http://www.python.org/sigs/distutils-sig/', packages=['distutils', 'distutils.command'], ) Normally, to build just the .spec file for an RPM of this module, I could run python setup.py bdist_rpm --spec-only, which parses the command line and calls the 'bdist_rpm' code to handle the RPM-specific stuff. The .spec file ends up in './dist'. How can I change my setup() invocation so that it runs the 'bdist_rpm' command with the '--spec-only' option, WITHOUT parsing command-line parameters? Can I pass the command name and options as parameters to setup()? Or can I manually construct a command line, and pass that as a parameter, instead? NOTE: I already know that I could call the script in a separate process, with an actual command line, using os.system() or the subprocess module or something similar. I'm trying to avoid using any kind of external command invocations. I'm looking specifically for a solution that runs setup() in the current interpreter. For background, I'm converting some release-management shell scripts into a single Python program. One of the tasks is running 'setup.py' to generate a .spec file for further pre-release testing. Running 'setup.py' as an external command, with its own command line options, seems like an awkward method, and it complicates the rest of the program. I feel like there may be a more Pythonic way.

Essentially, I have a client and server-application, on my server I want a small python web server to start the server application with given test sequences on a GET or POST call. Also, the application prints some testdata to stderr which I'd like to catch and return in another HTTP call. I do not know the perfect inner workings of Popen and BaseHTTPRequestHandler however and do not really know where it goes wrong. Is there any way to make this work asynchronously?

    Assuming that the given directory tree is of reasonable size: say an open source project like Twisted or Python, what is the fastest way to traverse and iterate over the absolute path of all files/directories inside that directory? I want to do this from within Python (subprocess is allowed). os.path.walk is slow. So I tried ls -lR and tree -fi. For a project with about 8337 files (including tmp, pyc, test, .svn files): $ time tree -fi > /dev/null real 0m0.170s user 0m0.044s sys 0m0.123s $ time ls -lR > /dev/null real 0m0.292s user 0m0.138s sys 0m0.152s $ time find . > /dev/null real 0m0.074s user 0m0.017s sys 0m0.056s $ tree appears to be faster than ls -lR (though ls -R is faster than tree, but it does not give full paths). find is the fastest. Can anyone think of a faster and/or better approach? On Windows, I may simply ship a 32-bit binary tree.exe or ls.exe if necessary. Update 1: Added find

  • Piping EOF problems with stdio and C++/Python

    I got some problems with EOF and stdio. I have no idea what I am doing wrong. When I see an EOF in my program I clear the stdin and next round I try to read in a new line. The problem is: for some reason the getline function immediatly (from the second run always, the first works just as intended) returns an EOF instead of waiting for a new input from py python process...   • Java Input/Output streams for unnamed pipes created in native code?

    Is there a way to easily create Java Input/Output streams for unnamed pipes created in native code? Motivation: I need my own implementation of the Process class. The native code spawns me a new process with subprocess' IO streams redirected to unnamed pipes. Problem: The file descriptors for correct ends of those pipes make their way to Java. At this point I get stuck as I cannot create a new FileDescriptor which I could pass to FileInput/FileOutput stream. I have used reflection to get around the problem and got communication with a simple bouncer sub-process running. However I have a notion that it is not the cleanest way to go. Have you used this approach? Do you see any problems with this approach? (the platform will never change) Searching around the internets revealed similar solution using native code. Any thoughts before I dive into heavy testing of this approach are very welcome. I would like to give a shot to existing code before writing my own IO stream implementations... Thank you.
