  • Using ret with FASM on Win32

    - by Jon Purdy
I'm using SDL with FASM, and have code that's minimally like the following: format ELF extrn _SDL_Init extrn _SDL_SetVideoMode extrn _SDL_Quit extrn _exit SDL_INIT_VIDEO equ 0x00000020 section '.text' public _SDL_main _SDL_main: ccall _SDL_Init, SDL_INIT_VIDEO ccall _SDL_SetVideoMode, 640, 480, 32, 0 ccall _SDL_Quit ccall _exit, 0 ; Success, or ret ; failure. With the following quick-and-dirty makefile: SOURCES = main.asm OBJECTS = main.o TARGET = SDLASM.exe FASM = C:\fasm\fasm.exe release : $(OBJECTS) ld $(OBJECTS) -LC:/SDL/lib/ -lSDLmain -lSDL -LC:/MinGW/lib/ -lmingw32 -lcrtdll -o $(TARGET) --subsystem windows cleanrelease : del $(OBJECTS) %.o : %.asm $(FASM) $< $@ Using exit() (or Windows' ExitProcess()) seems to be the only way to get this program to exit cleanly, even though I feel like I should be able to use retn/retf. When I just ret without calling exit(), the application does not terminate and needs to be killed. Could anyone shed some light on this? It only happens when I make the call to SDL_SetVideoMode().

  • Bash script "read" not pausing for user input when executed from SSH shell

    - by Aaron Hancock
I'm new to Bash scripting, so please be gentle. I'm connected to a Ubuntu server via SSH (PuTTY) and when I run this command, I expect the bash script that downloads and executes to allow user input and then echo that input. It seems to just write out the echo label for the input request and terminate. wget -O - https://raw.github.com/aaronhancock/pub/master/bash/readtest.sh | bash Any clue what I might be doing wrong? UPDATE: This bash command does exactly what I wanted bash <(wget -q -O - https://raw.github.com/aaronhancock/pub/master/bash/readtest.sh)

  • Multi-Threading - Cleanup strategy at program end

    - by weismat
What is the best way to finish a multi-threaded application in a clean way? I am starting several socket connections from the main thread in seperate sockets and wait until the end of my business day in the main thread and use currently System.Environment.Exit(0) to terminate it. This leads to an unhandled execption in one of the childs. Should I stop the threads from the list? I have been reluctant to implement any real stopping in the childs yet, thus I am wondering about the best practice. The sockets are all wrapped nicely with proper destructors for logging out and closing, but it still leads to errors.

  • EndpointNotFoundException when working through tutorials in Learning WCF

    - by Nicholas
I am working through the book Learning WCF and on the first tutorial lab HelloIndigo I am receiving the following error. Could not connect to http://localhost:8000/HelloIndigo/HelloIndigoService. TCP error code 10061: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it 127.0.0.1:8000. It appears in the Client project on the line string s = proxy.HelloIndigo(); EndpointAddress ep = new EndpointAddress("http://localhost:8000/HelloIndigo/HelloIndigoService"); IHelloIndigoService proxy = ChannelFactory<IHelloIndigoService>. CreateChannel(new BasicHttpBinding(), ep); string s = proxy.HelloIndigo(); Console.WriteLine(s); Console.WriteLine("Press <ENTER> to terminate Client"); Console.ReadLine(); I have intensively googled on this but I am none the wiser. Can anyone explain the issue and how to remedy?

  • iPad crashes that aren't happening on iPhone or iPod Touch

    - by alyoshak
Has anyone had difficulty getting what has otherwise been a solid iPhone app working on the iPad? I was under the impression that iPhone apps would run without problems on the iPad. We are are experiencing crashes (not intermittent - same place, at same time) that we've never gotten on the iPhone or iPod Touch. I have become suspicious that the crashes are memory-management related, but even if so, why only on the iPad? 2010-05-17 10:19:06.474 ASSIST[82:207] *** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSUnknownKeyException', reason: '[<UISectionRowData 0x6041480> valueForUndefinedKey:]: this class is not key value coding-compliant for the key deliveryDate.' 2010-05-17 10:19:06.481 ASSIST[82:207] Stack: ( 852041337, 861292157, 852040861, 850755255, 850750995, 850758945, 81279, 123007, 126693, 149141, 851599725, 827486573, 827486477, 827486431, 827485745, 827487359, 827454123, 851903137, 851590065, 851588321, 819339483, 819339655, 827151561, 827144691, 9461, 9324 ) terminate called after throwing an instance of 'NSException' Program received signal: “SIGABRT”.

  • Mongrel with Ruby 1.9.

    - by JussiR
When starting the server, I get this strange error after updating to Ruby 1.9: " [BUG] cross-thread violation on rb_gc() ruby 1.8.6 (2008-08-11) [i386-mswin32] This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information. " My mongrel version is 1.1.6, which should be compatible with Ruby 1.9. I also still have the Ruby 1.8.6 installation, so i assume that for some reason mongrel tries to access that and kills ruby? My rails version is 2.3.4, in case it matters.

  • Using C++, why can `throw` cause `terminate()`, and when are the stack variables to be freed?

    - by nbolton
I'm pondering a question on Brainbench. I actually realised that I could answer my question easily by compiling the code, but it's an interesting question nonetheless, so I'll ask the question anyway and answer it myself shortly. Take a look at this snippet: The question considers what happens when we throw from a destructor (which causes terminate() to be called). It's become clear to me by asking the question that the memory is indeed freed and the destructor is called, but, is this before or after throw is called from foo? Perhaps the issue here is that throw is used while the stack is unwinding that is the problem... Actually this is slightly confusing.

  • sending control+c (SIGINT) to NSPIPE in objective-c

    - by Ron
Hello, I am trying to terminate an openvpn task, spawned via NSTask. My question: Should I send ctrl+c (SIGINT) to the input NSPipe for my NSTask? inputPipe = [NSPipe pipe]; taskInput = [inputPipe fileHandleForWriting]; NSString dataString = @"\cC"; [taskInput writeData:[dataString dataUsingEncoding: [NSString defaultCStringEncoding]]]; Alternatively, I was thinking about using kill( pid, SIGINT ); but it would be much more complicated since the process ID has to be determined via a detour ([task processIdentifier] does not help here) - the original NSTask calls: /bin/bash -c sudo -S | mypassword .... That's not nice, I know but it is only called once and the sudo password has been entered in that case already. thanks for any suggestions/opinions/etc. Ron

  • C#/.NET: Closing another process outside the main window

    - by eibhrum
Hi, I just wanna ask your opinion/suggestion on how to 'terminate' a running application/process is C# Right now, I do have the following codes: Process myProcess; private void btnOpen_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { DirectoryInfo di = new DirectoryInfo(System.Environment.GetFolderPath(Environment.SpecialFolder.Programs)); myProcess = Process.Start(di + @"\Wosk\Wosk.appref-ms"); // opening a file coming for Startup Menu } private void btnClose_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { myProcess.Kill(); // not working - Cannot process request because the process has exited } I also tried myProcess.Close(); but nothing's happening.

  • If terminating a hung thread is a good idea, how do I do it safely?

    - by Steve
My Delphi program relies heavily on Outlook automation. Outlook versions prior to 2007-SP2 tend to get stuck in memory due to badly written addins and badly written Outlook code. If Outlook is stuck, calling CreateOleObject('Outlook.Application') or GetActiveObject ... doesn't return and keeps my application hanging till Outlook.exe is closed in the task manager. I've thought of a solution, but I'm unsure whether it's good practice or not. I'd start Outlook with CreateOleObject in a separate thread, wait 10 seconds in my main thread and if Outlook hangs (CreateOleObject doesn't return), offer the user to kill the Outlook.exe process from my program. But since I don't want to force the user to kill the Outlook.exe process, as an alternative I also need a way to kill the new thread in my program which keeps hanging now. Is this good practice? How can I terminate a hanging thread in Delphi without leaking memory?

  • Using a Cross Thread Boolean to Abort Thread

    - by Jon
Possible Duplicate: Can a C# thread really cache a value and ignore changes to that value on other threads? Lets say we have this code: bool KeepGoing = true; DataInThread = new Thread(new ThreadStart(DataInThreadMethod)); DataInThread.Start(); //bla bla time goes on KeepGoing = false; private void DataInThreadMethod() { while (KeepGoing) { //Do stuff } } } Now the idea is that using the boolean is a safe way to terminate the thread however because that boolean exists on the calling thread does that cause any issue? That boolean is only used on the calling thread to stop the thread so its not like its being used elsewhere

Here is the code that the thread is running: private void ThreadCreateCurvedGraph() { FormGraph myGraph = new FormGraph(); myGraph.CreateCurvedGraph(...); myGraph.Show(); } My problem is that myGraph closed right after it's open. 1) Does anyone know why this is happening and how to make myGraph stay open? 2) After the user closed myGraph, How do I terminate the thread? Many thanks!

  • Where should I catch WM_HIBERNATE and WM_CLOSE in Windows Mobile/WinCE?

    - by afriza
I have read about Windows Mobile's X button's behaviour, WM_HIBERNATE, and WM_CLOSE on Low Memory Situation. MSDN on WM_HIBERNATE: This message is sent to an application when system resources are running low. An application should attempt to release as many resources as possible when sent this message by unloading dialog boxes, destroying windows, or freeing up as much local storage as possible without changing the internal state. MSDN on WM_CLOSE: This message is sent as a signal that a window or an application should terminate. Where should I catch the message? in the main message pump? in every window? or only some windows? If I am using MFC, where should I catch it?

  • Java String Replace and null characters

    - by praspa
Testing out someone elses code (of course it was ...) , I noticed a few JSP pages printing funky non-ascii characters. Taking a dip into the source I found this tidbit. // remove any periods from first name e.g. Mr. John --> Mr John firstName = firstName.trim().replace('.','\0'); Does replacing a character in a String with a null character even work in Java? I know that '\0' will terminate a c-string. Would this be the culprit to the funky characters? Thanks PR

  • C# Abort()ing threads on exit for a Form

    - by Gio Borje
So far I have this code run when the X button is clicked, but I'm not sure if this is the correct way to terminate threads on a form on exit. Type t = this.GetType(); foreach (PropertyInfo pi in t.GetProperties()) { if (pi.GetType() == typeof(Thread)) { MethodInfo mi = pi.GetType().GetMethod("Abort"); mi.Invoke(null, new object[] {}); } } I keep getting this error: "An attempt has been made to free an RCW that is in use. The RCW is in use on the active thread or another thread. Attempting to free an in-use RCW can cause corruption or data loss."

  • App crashes when adding array data to table cells

    - by bassmandan
I am trying to create a table view that loads a number of tweets into the table (one per cell etc). I am using NSXMLParser to get the information and have got as far as creating an array with the selection of tweets that I want. However, when I try to add them to the table cells, the app crashes on the line: cell.textLabel.text = cellValue; An NSLog before this shows in the console that the app is getting the correct data, so I am a bit stumped as to why this isn't working. This is the block of code that appears to be having the problem: - (UITableViewCell *)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView cellForRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath { static NSString *CellIdentifier = @"Cell"; UITableViewCell *cell = [tableView dequeueReusableCellWithIdentifier:CellIdentifier]; if (cell == nil) { cell = [[UITableViewCell alloc] initWithStyle:UITableViewCellStyleDefault reuseIdentifier:CellIdentifier]; } // Set up the cell... NSString *cellValue = [statuses objectAtIndex:indexPath.row]; NSLog(@"%@", cellValue); cell.textLabel.text = cellValue; return cell;} If it makes a difference, I am using ARC and the latest version of XCode. I'm still quite new to all this, so if I need to give some extra information, let me know. Thanks in advance. • Restart Delphi Application Programmatically

    - by Smasher
It should not be possible to run multiple instances of my application. Therefore the project source contains: CreateMutex (nil, False, PChar (ID)); if (GetLastError = ERROR_ALREADY_EXISTS) then Halt; Now I want to restart my application programmatically. The usual way would be: AppName := PChar(Application.ExeName) ; ShellExecute(Handle,'open', AppName, nil, nil, SW_SHOWNORMAL) ; Application.Terminate; But this won't work in my case because of the mutex. Even if I release the mutex before starting the second instace it won't work because shutdown takes some time and two instance cannot run in parallel (because of common resources and other effects). Is there a way to restart an application with such characteristics? (If possible without an additional executable) Thanks in advance.

  • Java Socket Disconnect Reporting vs. C# Disconnection

    - by ikurtz
in C# when a sockets connection is terminated the other node is informed of this before terminating the link thus the remaning node can update the connection status. in Java when i terminate a communication link the other node keeps reporting the connection as valid. do i need to implement a read cycle (makes sense) that reports the connection as lost when it recieves a -1 during read (in C# this is 0 i think)? thank you for your insight. EDIT: thanks to you both. as i suspected and mentioned in my post that an additional check is required to confirm the connected state of a connection.

  • NSView -(void)keyDown in console program

    - by Jonas Byström
I'm not getting the -(void)keyDown callback on my inherited NSOpenGLView (note that mouseMoved does not work either though I do setAcceptsMouseMovedEvents:YES, but that is not an issue yet). It implements - (BOOL)acceptsFirstResponder { return YES; } but still no luck. My knowledgeable friend implied that it might have something to do with that the application is still a console application and not a bundled .app (I'm currently porting it). If so: is there some way to circumvent? Could the cause be something else? When I terminate my console application, I frequently see all my keypresses go to stdout so it does seem reasonable...
