  • command prompt DIR with wildcard returns unexpected results

    I am running 2003 server (latest service pack).   • Hour-long shutdown duration "shutting down hyper-v virtual machine management service"

    I have a Windows 2008 R2 server that is a Hyper-V host (Dell PowerEdge T300). Today for the first time I encountered an odd situation; i lost connection with one of the guest machines but logging on physically it seems the guest OS is still running but no longer contactable via the network. I tried to shut down the guest machine (Windows XP) but it would not shut down, getting stuck in a "Not responding" dialog box that cannot be dismissed. I used the Hyper-V management console to reset the machine and it could not get out of resetting state. I tried to save another Windows 2003 guest machine, and it would be progress with its Saving state (0%). The other running Windows 2003 guest was stuck in the logon dialog. My first suspicion is perhaps one of the Windows update patches this week (10 Nov 2011) may something to do with it, which was still pending a system restart. Well, since I could not do anything with Hyper-V i proceeded with the Windows Update restart, and now it is stuck half an hour at "Shutting down hyper-v virtual machine management service" Prior to restarting I did not observe any hard disk errors reported in the system event log; doubt it is a disk-related condition. Shall I force a hard reboot? UPDATE Ok so i left it hanging over an hour while attending to other matters, and thankfully the host cleanly restarted. I can operate the guest machines fine now. Phew. Hyper-V must have been crawling for some reason. The VMs have been observed to become slow in the past when the host has been up for a long duration (two weeks to a month), but never this slow. Would love to know what types of performance monitoring items i can observe to give a hint why this can happen. UPDATE 2012-02-13 In the months ever since, Hyper-V has stalled into this state another two times. It appears so randomly and without any error event logs to hint what is causing it enter this "drunkard" state. Just an Hyper-V management service timeout.   • Unexpected(?) high 'wasted' memory in memcached

    Looking at our memcached stats I think I have found an issue I was not aware of before. It seems that we have a strangely high amount of wasted space. I checked with phpmemcacheadmin for a change, and found this image staring at me: Now I was under the impression that the worst-case scenario would be that there is 50% waste, although I am the first to admit not knowing all the details. I have read - amongst others- this page which is indeed somewhat old, but so is our version of memcached. I think I do understand how the system works (e.g.) I believe, but I have a hard time understanding how we could get to 76% wasted space. The eviction rate that phpmemcacheadmin shows is 2 ev/s, so there is some problem here. The primary question is: what can I do to fix this. I could throw more memory at it (there is some extra available I think), maybe I should fiddle with the slab config (is that even possible with this version?), maybe there are other options? Upgrading the memcached version is not a quickly available option. The secondairy question, out of curiosity, is of course if the rate of 75% (and rising) wasted space is expected, and if so, why. System: This is currently not something I can do anything about, I know the memcached version isn't the newest, but these are the cards I've been dealt. Memcached 1.4.5 Apache 2.2.17 PHP 5.3.5

  • Active node stops resources when pasive node is shutdown

    2 nodes, active/pasive. 2 resources, a virtual ip, openLdap, and the nfs mount where openldap saves the data. When both nodes are up, things worked fine. You could move resources away and put the active in stanby. But when i rebooted the passive node, ( with the resources in the active node), and the passive node loses conectivity, all the resources in the active where stopped by pacemaker. I'm reading the documentation right now, but I just need a little quick tip to figure what could be hapenning here. Im using: corosync pacemaker RHEL 6

    AD is at 2003 functional level, some of our DC's are running Windows Server 2003, some are 2008, some are 2008 R2. When using the following query: (objectCategory=user) I do not expect to see any result where the objectCategory attribute is equal to 'CN=Person,CN=Schema,CN=Configuration,DC=Contoso' I expect only objects where the objectCategory attribute is equal to 'CN=User,CN=Schema,CN=Configuration,DC=Contoso' However, the query does indeed return all objects with the objectCategory attribute equal to 'CN=Person,CN=Schema,CN=Configuration,DC=Contoso' My question then is this: Why do I see the search results that I do? Does AD actively translate queries that include (objectCategory=user) to (objectCategory=Person)? I have looked at the schema definitions for both the Person and the User class, but I cannot see any reason for the query results as I am experiencing them. I know that the User class is a subclass of the organizationalPerson class, which is a subclass of Person, but I can't see an attribute value that would explain this translation.

  • Unexpected multiple network connections on Windows Vista

    My Network and Sharing Center shows multiple connections to the internet, where only one is expected: My internet access works fine, but since the "Unidentified Network" is set to public after each boot, sharing and network discovery don't work as well.   • Laptop automatic shutdown after 2 seconds

    I'm trying to insvestigate which component produces this behavior. Other indications show it may be the GPU but I wonder if anyone knows more. It's a Toshiba Satellite X200 description: AC power shows the power being fed normally, when turned on the fan works and it appears to be starting up but after 2 seconds it shuts down with only the 'AC power connected" led on. -- seconds are about up to 4,maybe not 2 exactly.

    As I was proceeding to empty the trash on this machine (Mac OS X version 10.6.3), a listing of thousands of items began accumulating. Trash itself shows some 237 items, many of them folders labeled as, for example "com.apple.AddressBook". I am certain that I did not send the bulk of these items to trash. Is it possible that one of the periodic Software Updates has eliminated files by sending them to Trash? Or have I picked up some malware which has sent important stuff to trash? Thanks.

Is this a bug in powershell?

  • Unexpected media key behavior on new Acer Aspire

    I'm having weird issues with the media keys (play/pause, previous, next, etc.) on a new Acer Aspire laptop. This is the first Acer I've owned and also my first Windows 7 computer, so I'm not sure whether the behavior is a result of some hidden Acer process that I haven't rooted out yet, or some Windows 7 option that I'm not aware of, or something else. I'm experiencing two issues that I suspect are related. Both problems are intermittent but happen more often than not. The media player I'm using is Winamp. I'm pretty sure I've had the same problem when using other media players, but when I tried to verify that before posting this, I only had the problems with Winamp. Because the problems are intermittent, I'm not sure if that's significant. 1) When I press the Play/Pause media key, in addition to playing or pausing the media player, it brings up a little menu in the center of the screen that lists my removable drives (CD/DVD, USB drives, etc.). To make the menu go away I have to either click away from it or hit Escape. Selecting a drive on the menu doesn't seem to do anything. 2) When I press the Previous or Next media keys, it skips 2+ tracks instead of just one (the exact number seems to vary). I've poked around all the control panel options that I can find, and looked through all the utilities that came with the computer with no luck. There's nothing that I can find in the (very slim) documentation, either. I have a hunch that the problem is caused by whatever utility manages global hotkeys, but I haven't found any way to configure that. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. UPDATE: It looks like Winamp was the culprit. I did have the problem when using other media players, but when I uninstalled Winamp, the problem went away. I'd like to use Winamp, but I can survive with other players.

    I've upgraded to 10.04 from 9.10. Everything went fine until I've rebooted. After reboot, I've received some message about status panel and being sleepy, dismissed it. However, I haven't seen the user widget on Gnome Panel since that. This image shows which widget I'm talking about.   • MySQL fault linked to windows shutdown failure?

    As far as i understand my computer is experiencing a strange coincidence (hopefully it isn't and somebody can enlighten me). Basically i shut down my laptop (Windows 7) (at 17.20, today, to be precise) successfully (and so also did XAMPP and its included components). However upon starting my laptop up again in the last hour i noticed that the MySQL module service in my xampp control panel was not coming on (just a big red tick; incidentally everything else was working fine). Now, i had the exact same problem about two weeks ago, whereby i just reinstalled xampp and got it working again. But rather than doing this straight away i thought i would just restart my laptop first. However it won't restart (or shut down first) to be precise now. I can remember Windows wasn't shutting down properly the last time it happened (about two weeks ago). Just wondered if this coincidence pointed to any specific diagnostic as regards the problem with MYSQL? If so i would appreciate greatly any help. Otherwise sorry for wasting your time.

    I have P4 processor with nvidia card. Now if i don't connect to internet then my computer stays on for as much i can like 4-5 days. But if i plug in the ethernet wire. Do some surfing and leave computer as it is. Then computer fails. I mean The display on screen gets off Looks like something stopping the power supply to Harddisk. But motherboard stays on , FAN is still running , i can eject CD drive as well. But no display on monitor. I have to turn off and then turn on again. I tried formatting windows XP but again same problem

  • Unexpected behaviour in a Lotus Notes programmable table

    I'm designing a workflow database in Lotus Notes 6.0.3 (soon upgrading to 8.5), and my OS is Windows XP. I have recently tried converting a tabbed table into a programmable one. This was so that I could control which tab was displayed to the user when it was opened, so that they were presented with the most appropriate one for that document's progress through the workflow. That part of it works! One of the tabs features a radio button that controls visibility of the next tab, and a pair of cascading dialogue boxes. One contains the static list "Person":"Team", and the other has a formula based on the first: view:=@If(PeerReview = "Team"; "GroupNames"; "GroupMembers"); @Unique(@DbColumn(""; ""; view; 1)) The dialogue boxes have the property "Refresh fields on keyword change" selected. The behaviour that I wasn't expecting is this. If the radio button is set to "Yes" and a value is selected in one of the dialogue boxes, the table opens the next tab. If the radio button is set to "No" and a value is selected in one of the dialogue boxes, the entire table is hidden. I can duplicate the latter by switching off the "Refresh fields on keyword change" property on the dialogue boxes and instead pressing F9 after selecting a value. I have no idea why the former occurs, though. The table is called "RFCInfo", and I have a field on the form called "$RFCInfo" which is editable, hidden from all users who aren't me and initially set by a Postopen script, which I can post if necessary - it's essentially a Select Case statement that looks at a particular item value and returns the name of the table row relating to that value. Can anyone offer any pointers?

    Server1 is Master Server2 is Slave Both are in our AWS testing env and we stop them once done with our work. When start again, Master rotates/creates new binary log file but slave keep looking for same/existing one and replication stops. Right now, I'm manually repairing it by (slave): stop slave; CHANGE MASTER TO MASTER_HOST='xx', MASTER_USER='xxx', MASTER_PASSWORD='xxx' , MASTER_LOG_FILE='new-mysql-bin.00000x',MASTER_LOG_POS=107; start slave; show slave status\G and slave becomes good again.Mysql is 5.5.x on Ubuntu 12.04. Will appreciate any help in automating it.

  • Unexpected "waiting for localhost"?

    So I ran into something that kind of worried me today. Lately my computer has been kind of slow and I'm dealing with that, but today when I opened Facebook in Google Chrome, I noticed a message in the bottom left corner while it was loading the site that said "Waiting for localhost". It was brief and I managed to notice it because my computer is slower than it used to & it caused Chrome to hang briefly, long enough for me to read it. As I'm quite confident in that Facebook isn't running on my localhost, I'm wondering what could potentially make Chrome wait for localhost while I'm loading webpages from external servers. Is there a malware of some kind that I should be worrying about? Unfortunately I have no other information than this to go on, and I have no idea how to further investigate this, if it generated any logs or whatever. I'd appreciate any help in figuring out this matter!

    Sometimes, my Linux PC unexpectedly closes my session (log out) while I am working, and puts me back the login window. If I have terminal 1 logged with root and 2 logged with another user (without X), these ones are not logged out. For example, for the last three hours, it has happened five times. Other times, it leads to a reboot. So I have investigated: the UPS, but the behaviour is unchanged without it). the temperatures, but everything is fine (cpu, disks, video card). I have started to investigate also: the memory (partially tested - I have to run a full testyt next night). EDIT: totally tested and passed. My configuration is: Linux 2.6.37-tuxonice x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 860 @ 2.80GHz. Any idea please?

Still, I get [error] There was an unexpected Confirmation! in the log and test case fails. Any suggestions?
