• Apache has no rights to unzip file uploaded by DirectAdmin created FTP user

  I know similar things have been asked a thousandfold, but I can't seem to figure it out.. I have recently started renting a VPS. It runs DirectAdmin. I created a reseller account in the admin account, and created a new user (with FTP account) with the reseller account. I logged in with FTP as the created user and uploaded a zip file and a php file which will extract the zip. But when running the script in the browser I get "Permission denied" errors however. Probably because Apache is not in the same group as the users FTP account. Now my question is: How can I solve this once and for all, so that I don't have to do it again for every new user account I create through DirectAdmin?

• How many nginx/fastcgi processes do you use?

  I have a drupal-based website on a VPS with 1GB RAM and 1Ghz processor share. The webserver is nginx along with php-fastcgi. Currently I am using 10 nginx and 13 php-fastcgi processes. The server load is high most of the times while half of the RAM is unused. The CPU usage rarely reaches 80%. I have tried some other combinations of nginx/php-fastcgi but am not sure what is the optimal combination because I am quite ignorant about what's going on below the surface. So I appreciate if you could share your experience or give me some clues.

• Forensics on Virtual Private servers [closed]

  So these days with talks about having hacked machines being used for malware spreading and botnet C&C, the one issue that is not clear to me is what do the law enforcement agencies do once they have identified a server as being a source or controller of attack/APT and that server is a VPS on my cluster/datacenter? Do they take away the entire machine? This option seems to have a lot of collateral damage associated with it, so I am not sure what happens and what are the best practices for system admins for helping law enforcement with its job while keeping our jobs!

• Alternative to cPanel (For Email, ect)

  I'm currently setting up a VPS for the first time. Standard that I've ever worked with before on shared hosting was cPanel, but as the majority of my work I plan on doing from now on will be using NodeJS and Python/Flask, I'd like to avoid needing to install Apache/MySQL/PHP. What would be my best bet to help manage a mail server other than cPanel? Or even other specific server settings that may come in handy later? Plan on using Ubuntu if that counts for anything.

• Site faster on 1 core/1GB ram than on 8 core/32GB ram wth?

  Both sites are US based. I'm located in Europe. http://198.105.209.13/ <==== site that loads tons faster on 1 core and 1gb ram ONLY (Cent OS VPS) http://108.61.35.219/ <== site is located on my dedicated server with i7-3770 cpu and 32 gb ram (Windows) and is slow as hell Even if faster site is on linux it shouldn't make such a big difference in page load seriously. Does anyone know what could be a hiccup on the dedicated server? It's just unbelievable to me that site loads faster on 1 core cpu than on dedicated server. Note that site is pretty much only thing running on dedicated server. It has 1gbps connection.

• Why do some servers have so many processes running?

  I have two VPS servers but they have drastically different amounts of memory usage and processes running. I'm still new to running linux servers so I'm having trouble figuring out what is going on and what I can do to fix it. Both are Debian 5 32bit installs. On one server with 128MB of ram and a single CPU core I have a full server running in only 84MB of RAM. The other server has 512MB (quad core CPU) and it has nothing running but core processes yet its still using 94MB of RAM. Does one have a different kind of virtualization technology that requires more linux core processes or what?

  I just attempted to install OpenVPN Access Server on my Debian VPS that uses OpenVZ. • Throttling Postfix memory

  I have a VPS on 1and1 similar to this configuration (512MB, burst up to 2GB). I run a web service where I crawl the web and notify my users through email and sms when a certain online data feed changes. When I send the emails out, I just have PHP loop through the recipients list and send the emails out using the mail() function. Whenever I try to send a large volume of these messages out, my server starts acting funny. I can't even run an 'ls' sometimes because the shell tells me it 'cannot allocate memory'. The shell is unusable and yet my website is being served up fine. • kmemsize problems in VPS even when there is about 500MB free mem

  Hello, I have a site hosted on a Plesk VPS with 512MB memory and keep on getting kmemsize in "black zone" QoS errors. The soft limit of kmemsize is 12,288,832 and hard limit is 13,517,715. The definition Virtuozzo gives is: Size of unswappable memory, allocated by the operating system kernel. What's eating up the kmemsize? Is there any way to reconfigure and increase the kmemsize? The servers barely have any load or processing. Thanks for the help...

• High load average, low CPU and IO (Centos 5.7)

  A Drupal 7 site with CiviCRM, after running smoothly for a year on a 1&1 VPS suddenly became unresponsive. Now pages eventually load, but can take more than a minute. Looking at resource use in Virtuozzo, the load average carries a warning, and has remained above 1. While I understand this isn't particularly high, this is a change from when the site was working.   I inserted a rule to iptables to track the input usage to a certain ip address. The vps server's IP is 192.168.1.5 and the guest os's IP is 192.168.1.115. I ran 'yum update' inside the guest OS to get some network traffic. Then I ran iptables -vnL from the hypervisor. However it only showed network usage to the host, but not to the guest. • Cant connect to MySQL server from Java application

  This is on VPS\Centos server. The MySQL server is pre configured. I am running the Java application on Tomcat My Java web application is not able to connect to the MySQL server. I get an error - "Caused by: java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused" I suspect this to be a configuration problem rather than a coding problem- hence I have posted this on ServerFault And yes, The same web-app is able to connect to MySQL on a different linux box This is the URL that I provided to my Java application (note- it assumes default port) url = "jdbc:mysql://localhost/pickupgames" My first suspicion was that I am running on a non-default port So I tried to find the port where mySQL server is running I tried every trick mentioned in http://serverfault.com/questions/116100/how-to-check-what-port-mysql-is-running-on But no luck !   I got some hackers constantly hitting my RDP and generating thousands of audit failures in event log. Password is pretty elaborate so I dont think bruteforcing will get them anywhere. I am using VPS and I am pretty much a noob in Windows Server security (am a programmer myself and its my webserver for my site). Which is a recommended approach to deal with this? I would rather block IPs after some amount of failures for example. Sorry if question is not appropriate.

• Secondary IP (eth0:0) acts like main server IP

  I have a CentOS server, configured with 4 consecutive IPs: eth0 5.x.x.251 eth0:0 5.x.x.252 eth0:1 5.x.x.253 eth0:2 5.x.x.254 The problem is that all traffic goes out to the internet with eth0:0 (5.x.x.252) as the source IP, instead of eth0. # curl ifconfig.me 5.x.x.252 How can I fix this, so that all traffic goes out via eth0, ie my main IP? • Better antivirus for Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 VPS

  I have only one VPS with Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 and want to buy an Antivirus. I tried NOD32 but they do not give less than 5 users in business edition (I have only one server). Kaspersky may be another solution but whether should i go for Internet Security or Anti-virus? I have few website hosted on this server and user have ability to upload .jpg, .gif, .zip files in few of the folders. Apart from above two any other suggestions on Antivirus that works well on above configuration and available for only one user? Thanks

• Nginx ignores HTTP Authentication for WordPress login directory

  I am running WordPress in a subfolder of my domain for testing and development purposes on a VPS LEMP-stack. In order to password-protect the wp-login.php with an etxra layer, I used HTTP authentication for the wp-admin folder. The problem is that the http authentication is ignored. When the wp-login.php or wp-admin-folder is called, it goes directly to the normal WordPress-login. And the Magento Site which consists of a lot of InnoDB tables, some MyISAM and some INMEMORY. The "read" side seems to be running pretty well with a mass of optimizations I've used on Magento, the NGINX setup and PHP-FPM + XCACHE. I'd love to have a kick in the right direction with the MySQL config so I'm not blindly altering it based on the MySQLTuner without understanding what I'm changing. Thanks

• How do I apply multiple subnets to a server with one NIC?

  I am trying to route multiple IPs through one physical NIC on my dedicated server for use with Proxmox KVM VMs. I have a dedicated server which is currently running Debian 4.4.5-8 with 3 available ip addresses for use, which will be displayed as 176.xxx.xxx.196 (main), 176.xxx.xxx.198 (on same subnet as main) and 5.xxx.xxx.166 (different subnet). I am currently trying to route the third IP address with the dedi for use with a vps that I have set up using proxmox v2.x but am having a really, really hard time doing so. Virtual interfaces binding the additional IP addresses work as expected, ruling out external routing problems. The provider has given the following information for the IP addresses on the main subnet: gateway: 176.xxx.xxx.193 netmask: 255.255.255.224 broadcast: 176.xxx.xxx.223 As well as the following information for the IP address on the second subnet: gateway: 5.xxx.xxx.161 netmask: 255.255.255.248 broadcast: 5.xxx.xxx.167 Everything I've tried with /etc/network/interfaces has either not worked, or has rendered the network completely useless. • Flushing iptables broke my pipe, how can I save my instance?

  I was setting up my iptables when I performed a iptables -F and my ssh pipe broke. Now I did a nmap scan and not a single port is open anymore. I know my VPS is running on VMWare ESXi, could a reboot help? Or if not could I attach and mount the disk to another vm to save the data? Does anybody have some advise? And maybe an explanation what happend or what could have cause my pipe to break? ps: I didn't save my rules on the config directories of iptables. But used a file I stored in ~/rules.config to apply my rules like this: iptables-restore < rules.config So probably a reboot would help? Thanks a lot in advance.

• Ubuntu VPS - email and webserver

  I have a VPS based on Ubuntu, it has installed whole LAMP, everything needed for a web server and it works perfectly, but I'm still not able to configure it as a mail server.... I have configured MX record for my domain mail.mydomain.com and this part is OK, I also installed Postfix, Dovecot and Roundcube, configured it using this tutorial: http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Mail_Server_setup And after hours of configuring it doesn't work. I have experience with Linux and web hosting, but I successfully configured mail server once in past on Debian 6, and that with help from there. When I try to send email to me my gmail says: Technical details of permanent failure: Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the server for the recipient domain mydomain.com by dc147738a1117e4c12273.mydomain.com. [MY_SERVER_IP]. The error that the other server returned was: 554 5.7.1 <[email protected]>: Relay access denied Also I have Webmin control panel which works perfectly, how to configure postfix and dovecot from there?   I am running into a scenario where I'm seeing a high server load (sometimes upwards of 20 or 30) and a very low CPU usage (98% idle). I'm wondering if these wait states are coming as part of an NFS filesystem connection. Could NFS be the cause here or should I be worried about something else? This is a VPS box on a fiber channel SAN. I'd think the bottleneck wouldn't be the SAN. Comments?

• How to backup a remote VPS machine?

  I am considering opting for a VPS solution, with the server running Ubuntu server. I am pretty new to this, and I need to come up with a backup policy for my server data. Initial data is likely to be about 80Mb, and I expect the data to grow at approximately 5Mb to 10 Mb a day. Can anyone recommend: A backup/restore policy (best practises for a small startup) Which tools to use for backup? Another thing that is not clear to me is - where are the files backed up to normally (in the case of remote servers). If the files are backed up to the same machine (or even to another machine but with the same host), there is potentially, a single point of failure). How do people normally backup their server data, and is the probability of machine meltdown or the host company server farm "catching fire" so remote as not to be worth worrying about - especially for a small (read one man) startup like me?
