• Snow Leopard directories after hard disk crash and restore from Migrate Utility

  My hard drive on my macbook pro crashed the other day and I got a replacement from Apple with a vanilla snow leopard install. Upon returning home I used the Migration Utility to restore my previous data and configuration. So far, so good! Everything looks and works exactly the same as before the crash. However, I noticed these 2 directories that are taking up quite a bit of space: /Developer (from old Mac) /opt (from old Mac) The question is can I safely remove these? As I said, my macbook pro appears to be restored completely to before the hard drive crash. I can run all my apps and all my files appear to be intact. Therefore it seems the system is not using these directories. Also because of their odd names it doesn't seem that os x is using them for any purpose. Thanks in advance for any help!

• VPN/AFP server for centralized TimeMachine backups

  I am a sysadmin for a small group of about 7 people who prefer Apple machines for their work. These machines are currently either a) not backed up at all, or b) backed up using Retrospect(Which I'm not very fond of). I don't really have the budget for anything fancy, and I'd like to keep it as user friendly as possible. Ideally I am thinking of a VPN server they can connect to(to keep the traffic secure, and because they work from home frequently) along with an AFP server for use with TimeMachine. The goal would be to get better backup coverage, along with user-initiated restores and overall ease of use. Does this seem like a reasonable idea? Has anyone done this before? Are there any obvious problems I've overlooked?

• Windows Server 2008 R2 RAS VPN: access server on internal interface ip

  Hey, short question: I'm usually a linux admin but need to setup a Win2k8 R2 server for a student project. The server is running as VM on a root server and has a public internet IP assigned. Additionally I need a VPN server to access some services running on the server. I managed to set up a working VPN gateway via the Routing and RAS service which assigns clients an IP in the private subnet 192.168.88.0/24 with the Interface "Internal" listening on 192.168.88.1. Additionally I set up the external interface as NAT interface. So I can connect to the VPN server, get an IP assigned and the server additionally does NAT and I can access the internet over the VPN connection. The only thing I additionally need, is that I can access the server itself over that internal IP (e.g. client 192.168.88.2, server 192.168.88.1) as I want to access some services which I don't like to expose to the internet and restrict them to connected VPN clients. Does anybody have a hint, which configuration I'm missing here to be able to access the server over the VPN connection? EDIT: VPN clients get assigned the IP from the private subnet with subnetmask 255.255.255.255, I guess that might be the reason I can't access the server on the private IP address although it's in the same network range. Any ideas how to change this? I defined a static address pool in the Routing and RAS service, but I can't change the netmask there. EDIT2: I can't access the server from the client, but I can fully access the client from the server (ping, HTTP). I guess it has to do with firewall configuration. Thanks in advance, Mathias

• How to convert laptop drive for use as VMware image?

  I have a windows laptop that recently died (dead motherboard). It being a 7 year old laptop, I decided to give Apple a try this time around and try to use VMware to access my old data if necessary. In order to do this, I need to convert the physical drive to a VMware image. Googling around, it looks like I might be able to use VMware Convertor to do this. My original intent was to plug the laptop drive into a windows desktop via an external USB enclosure and create the image that way. However, upon further investigation, it looks like VMware Converter only supports converting a local machine (the desktop) or a remote machine (via IP) but not a laptop drive plugged into the local machine. So with that in mind, I'm looking for suggestions and help on how to convert this laptop drive into something I can use on my new Macbook Pro.

• Configuration Help for Sendmail Required

  Hi I need some help with respect to sendmail configuration. The basic problem is that I have some employees working from other places and they need access to their mail. So what I have done right now is whatever mails which are meant for them which are generated from within the company and collected by my internal mail server is bounced to an external mail server from where the employees access it. This is done through a email id on a different domain. This was working fine till I restricted the external mailing access for certain users using rulesets in sendmail.cf. Once I had put that in place only people who had external mailing rights could send mails to people outside the office. What I would like to know is that is there anyway where I can expose sendmail on two different ips and thereby configure everybody's email id to point to the same internal mail server using 2 different ips. one ip when inside the company and one ip outside the company. Is it possible that I have one static ip configured for both internal access and external access or is there any otherway it can be done with sendmail. • How to stop receiving an error reading iCal invitations on Mac sent from Thunderbird?

  When I open an iCal invitation (Mail Attachment.ics file) in Mac Mail.app sent to me from someone using Thunderbird, I receive the following error: The only solution that I've found to date is to save the Mail Attachment.ics file somewhere like the Desktop, open it in a text editor, and delete the blank lines at the beginning and end of the file. This problem appears to only happen when I'm receiving invitations from people using Thunderbird under Windows. Does anyone know of a better way to solve this problem? Is this a bug in Apple iCal, or is Thunderbird not meeting the iCal spec?   Hay Guys. I'm using plesk with Qmail as an outgoing server. I've never used my plesk setup before to send emails. I usually use my ISP. I'm having a little trouble settng this up. I've created a simple email account, [email protected]. All is well, i setup my POP account in my mail client (apple mail) and i can receive mail. However i can't send any. These are the details im using smtp.mycrazydomain.com standard auth (i've tried SSL and non SSL) username: [email protected] password: mypassword However nothing has happened. Anyone got any ideas?

The edb file is 4.7 gigabytes, but the First Storage Group folder itself is 50+ gigabytes due to many, many log files for each day going back to 2009. Is there any way -- I've Googled and haven't found anything -- to notify Exchange when I've completed a full backup, and have it purge its log files? According to this and this, end backup should cause Exchange to "flush the transaction logs for that storage group" but only "if a successful backup of a storage group occurred", which leaves my question as: What constitutes a "successful backup", and why is what I'm doing not it?

• After installing Windows Phone 8 SDK, Connectify doesn't work

  Today I installed Windows Phone 8 SDK from the official site. After installing and a couple of restarts (it restarted the PC to enable Hyper-V), I opened Connectify. I use Connectify Hotspot to connect my iPod to the internet as I have an ethernet connection and no wireless router. The problem is that now, Connectify doesn't show WiFi in Share Over. The attached screenshot shows this. Previously, before I installed the SDK, it would show Ethernet and Wi-Fi. I would select WiFi and share my internet. Now, this is completely screwed. EDIT: I found out that the Microsoft Virtual Wi-Fi Miniport Driver has got disabled and I am not able to enable it again. Please advise. • Suggestions for accessing SQL Server from internet

  i need to be able to access a customer's SQL Server, and ideally their entire LAN, remotely. They have a firewall/router, but the guy responsible for it is unwilling to open ports for SQL Server, and is unable to support PPTP forwarding. The admin did open VNC, on a non-stanrdard port, but since they have a dynamic IP it is difficult to find them all the time. In the past i have created a VPN connection that connects back to our network. But that didn't work so well, since when i need access i have to ask the computer-phobic users to double-click the icon and press Connect i did try creating a scheduled task that attempts to keep the VPN connection back to our office up at all times by running: >rasdial "vpn to me" But after a few months the VPN connection went insane, and thought it was both, and neither, connected an disconnected; and the vpn connection wouldn't work again until the server was rebooted. Can anyone think of a way where i can access the customer's LAN that doesn't involve opening ports on the router needing to know their external IP customer interaction of any kind Blah blah blah use vpn vnc protocol has known weaknesses you are unwise to lower your defenses it's not wise to expose SQL Server directly to the internet you stole that line from Empire Customer doesn't care about any of that. Customer wants things to work.

• X11Forwarding on MacOSX (Leopard/Snow Leopard)

  Hi, I have some remote boxes, which are a bunch of Mac Mini's. I access them now through SSH, and it fits my needs to do the maintenance. In the past, I used X11Forwarding with Linux boxes, when I was still using Debian myself, and I was able to run a specific application as if it was natively present (Firefox). I haven't succeeded to do this yet, but I assume because of the BSD underneath the fancy Apple GUI should be able to do such a task similar. I am aware of the remote administration, but I rather keep access limited to SSH on these boxes for inbound connections. Background information about the why's, tips, advice and comments are all helpful! Thanks!

  I am interested in buying a sony vaio z series laptop. But I found out that it was already released in january 2010 and doesnt have quad core cpus available. I guess there is a product update due in 2011? Has anyone knowledge of how the product cycles are with sony laptops? E. g. I know that apple updates its macbook pro series somewhat every 9 - 12 months. Is this around the same with sony?   I want to schedule events for exact times in Mac OS X. It seems like the 'at' command is the simplest way to do this. I have enabled atrun using the command: launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.atrun.plist To test at, I'm using the following one-line BASH script: echo 'foo' path/to/log.txt | at now + 2 minutes When I run the script, I get output like: job 17 at Sat May 15 12:57:00 2010 where '12:57:00' is indeed 2 minutes in the future. But the echo command executes immediately: the line 'foo' is added to log.txt right away. How can I make at work for me?

• OS/X Mavericks won't download in App Store

  I tried to download OS/X Mavericks through the App Store yesterday. However, I had to leave work before it was done downloading and shut down the machine while it was downloading. I assumed I'd be able to resume the download, or start over again later. However, now there's no way to get it to download again. When I find OS/X Mavericks in the store, I click on the "Download" link. It asks for my Apple ID which I enter, and it does absolutely nothing. It doesn't begin downloading, and it just still shows the "Download" button. Clicking on it again does nothing. I'm thinking there's something stuck somewhere, like some flag that says this download is in progress or it has already been downloaded. Is there some way to clear that out so I can start downloading it again?

That said our primary feature that we use google apps calendar for is sharing calendars. Best way to using office 2011... To sync calendars with an iPhone? To sync/share calendars between users? To sync contacts with an iphone? To sync/share contacts with between users? Users are on other computers and mostly work from home Needs to be fool proof once setup :-) I am not fond of the idea of syncing outlook with Mac address book and ical then to the iphone.

• Removing DS_Store files and variants?

  Hi, I am running an Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS server. Frequently I open up files using AFP from my Mac. Inevitably this created .DS_Store files on the server (although for some reason they are named :2eDS_Store. However, it also creates variants on DS_Store files. These variants are often named similarly to other files in that directory. E.g.: ~$ ls total 60K -rw-r--r-- 1 tarakhovsky 16K 2010-11-30 18:28 :2eDS_Store drwx--S--- 4 tarakhovsky 4.0K 2010-11-08 13:58 :2eTemporaryItems/ lrwxrwxrwx 1 tarakhovsky 15 2010-10-19 17:44 bigdisk -> /media/bigdisk// ... drwxr-xr-x 3 tarakhovsky 4.0K 2010-11-03 18:24 Temporary Items/ drwxr-xr-x 3 tarakhovsky 4.0K 2010-11-30 01:34 tmp/ ... I've disabled creation of DS_Store files using: defaults write com.apple.desktopservices DSDontWriteNetworkStores true so hopefully this won't continue to occur—but I really want to get rid of all of the existing variants of DS_Store files already on the server. Any ideas as to why these variants are being created and how I can get rid of them all?

• How to make TimeMachine back up contents of any path or mounted volume

  I keep different types of data in different encrypted sparsebundle images (say, one for each client) which automatically mount upon login but can't be opened by anybody other than myself. So, after login I have a number of virtual volumes in /Volumes/ which keeps my client data both secure and organized. How do I include data inside these virtual Volumes in TimeMachine's backups, or data residing in any path on any partition/volume? I found a promising solution description at blog.eurocomp.info involving editing the com.apple.TimeMachine.plist but all I can get TimeMachine to do is backing up the sparsebundle files themselves. I want it to back up the files inside the mounted image, though - something like adding /Volumes/Client_abc/ to TimeMachine's search path. Please do not redirect my to this previous question as it doesn't solve the problem at all. Please also refrain from telling me why you think I should not want this answer as that will not solve anything either. Please lastly don't say "it can't be done" unless you can technically prove that claim.

• Processor always at max speed

  I am running Windows 8 Pro on an Apple MacBook Pro 9,1 Mid 2012 15 inch non retina. It has a Core i7-3720 QM CPU @ 2.6 GHz. For the past few days, I have noticed that it is constantly running at max speed which is 2.59 GHz. Before, it used to run at 1.5 - 1.8 GHz on normal usage. And, the weirder thing is that CPU usage is minimal. Screenshot: So, what is the reason for this? And is it harmful?

• Reinstalling Mac OS X without original disc

  I've had Mac OS X Lion installed on a mid-2011 iMac. I've erased the main partition and when I try to repair OS installation it connects to the Internet and says that it can't continue and I should contact Apple Support. I don't have original CD which should've come with an iMac. How can I install at least some version of OS X? Update: I've downloaded what looks like an installation app for Mac OS X Lion with a 4.6Gb InstallESD.dmg file but can't open it on Windows. I've tried PowerISO and MagicISO to no effect. Is it possible to create Mac OS installation media on Windows?

• TCP: Address already in use exception - possible causes for client port? NO PORT EXHAUSTION

  Hello, stupid problem. I get those from a client connecting to a server. Sadly, the setup is complicated making debugging complex - and we run out of options. The environment: *Client/Server system, both running on the same machine. The client is actually a service doing some database manipulation at specific times. * The cnonection comes from C# going through OleDb to an EasySoft JDBC driver to a custom written JDBC server that then hosts logic in C++. Yeah, compelx - but the third party supplier decided to expose the extension mechanisms for their server through a JDBC interface. Not a lot can be done here ;) The Symptom: At (ir)regular intervals we get a "Address already in use: connect" told from the JDBC driver. They seem to come from one particular service we run. Now, I did read all the stuff about port exhaustion. This is why we have a little tool running now that counts ports and their states every minute. Last time this happened, we had an astonishing 370 ports in use, with the count rising to about 900 AFTER the error. We aleady patched the registry (it is a windows machine) to allow more than the 5000 client ports standard, but even then, we are far far from that limit to start with. Which is why I am asking here. Ayneone an ide what ELSE could cause this? It is a Windows 2003 Server machine, 64 bit. The only other thing I can see that may cause it (but this functionality is supposedly disabled) is Symantec Endpoint Protection that is installed on the server - and being capable of actinc as a firewall, it could possibly intercept network traffic. I dont want to open a can of worms by pointing to Symantec prematurely (if pointing to Symantec can ever be seen as such). So, anyone an idea what else may be the cause? Thanks

• Mac Parallels - Bridged network

  I am new to Apple and my task is to install VMs on a Mac server. I am trying to install 4 VMs and I want them to have separate IPs and be visible on the network as separate machines. What are my options? My research shows me that I can use a bridged network, but I have to select an adapter. I have only two network adapters, does that mean I can only have 2 VMs? And when I configure the 2 VMS, will my actual server have internet connection? Or does it use the Mac's address?
