• Folder Size Column on Explorer on Windows Vista/Seven

  I'm a big fan of FolderSize, but unfortunately it works only on Windows XP. Even reading this and this, I'm not convinced that I cannot to have a column showing the folder size on Windows Explorer. Even with all "problems" FolderSize worked like a charm in WindowsXP. In a sysadmin life, FolderSize is explendid. Before select a lot of folders to send to backup in DVDs, I can check directly in Windows Explorer the size of the folders and get a set of folders with 4.3Gb to burn in a DVD. In another situation, I can view in the root folder the size of the bigger folders in the hard drive and start a good strategy of backup/partitioning/transfer to another drive/etc. If desired, I can tell a lot of another needs that in my sysadmin life I need a tool like FolderSize... There is someone that is actively developing a solution to show folder size on Windows Explorer in Vista/Seven Windows? What the problems that I can face if I develop myself that "add-in" for Windows Explorer?

  I am doing a new install of Firefox and over the years my Windows "roaming folder" I use for backup has gotten all clogged up from so many add-ons and crap... I want to backup just a couple Firefox add-on's, one is "Fast dial" How do I backup this add-on and its addresses for when I reinstall Firefox and the add-on, so It will go back to where it is now? Most add-on's have a backup feature like "too many tabs" bookmarks and such but fast dial doesn't? so How do I backup this add-on? and /or addons like it without a backup feature? • Homegroup doesn't show other computers, but "Network" does

  I have a desktop and a laptop (both running windows 7) in my Windows 7 homegroup. The desktop created the homegroup, and the laptop joined it. Both share a few folders. On the laptop, I have no problem accessing the Desktop's shared folders via the "Homegroup" sidebar button in Windows Explorer. However, on the Desktop, I get the message No other homegroup computers are currently available in the homegroup screen. However, if I go to the Network page, I can see the other computer and browse its shared media. These shares were made by right clicking and choosing "Share with Homegroup". I can access the media, so this isn't a big problem, but I'm just confused as to why the Homegroup screen denies the existence of the other computer. Has anybody else encountered and resolved this?

  My new laptop has a big 16:9 screen, and I'm finding it hard to fully utilize it during the 95% of the time that I'm not watching HD movies on it. I'd like to set it up as a kind of virtual dual screen by splitting the physical screen into two workspaces. I know I could arrange my windows manually, but I'd like to be able to maximize a window and have it only consume half the monitor, and have its pop up dialogs centered on its half-screen, that sort of thing. Is there some kind of plug in available to do this? Thanks in advance for any pointers.

• Making Lync option visible in Outlook/GAL/AD

  In a big organization, people are slowly moving towards using Lync and away from using landlines. A handful of times per month, I get a meeting invitation that includes a conference call number and a remark about "not sure if everybody is on Lync". Often everybody is, and we start in a conference call and switch to Lync. Is there a good way to make it visible if a user has access to Lync? Like I can hit the "Online meeting" button in Outlook - and it would be great to see, if everybody invited support Lync. Does something like that exist?

• Sql Server differential backup : Simple vs Full recovery model

  I need to better understand the backup process under SQL Server 2008. Since drive space is a kind of matter for us and we want to have a better disaster recovery solution, I decided that we will implement differential backups throughout the day (every hour). Am I right to think that if I keep the recovery model of my databases to Simple, the differential backup will be almost the same size as Full Backup (too big to make one every hour) ? I already tried to switch to Full recovery and it seemed to have fixed the issue (differential backups were way smaller). I heard that the recovery model must be set to Full to use Log backups (to the minute recovery etc., but we don't need that) but never about differential backups. So, is the recovery model really having an impact on differential backups or am I missing something ? Thank you

• CPU fan twitching phase leds blinking - computer won't boot

  I have a big problem that I got today. Yesterday computer was "on" normally, I went to sleep without shutting it down. When I woke up, I heard a strange sound and was unable to bring it up from hibernate. I unplugged the PSU. When I plugged the PSU back in, the sound came back. When I opened the case, I saw the fan "twitching" like it is about to start and fan LEDs were blinking. Also, motherboard LEDs were blinking in the same pattern - the first green one has more of luminosity then others. When I cut down the power with 0/1 button on PSU, the fans continue to make sounds like the machine is trying to boot before the capacitors run out and the power dies. Does anyone have a clue what to do? I tried disassembling everything but that doesn't work. I will try with friend's PSU later today.

• Apache2 memory usage when uploading large files

  Hi, I am running apache2.2.12 along with PHP 5.2.10. PHP is configured to run as a separate process through fcgid. The problem is that when users upload a file, size of the apache process swells by almost the same amount. So if somebody tries to upload a 200 MB file, one of the child process swells to current size+200 MB. If 2 users simultaneously start uploading, my server crashes. Now it is the virtual memory size which is increasing but since I am on a OpenVZ based VPS, that is what counts. My questions are: Is it the normal Apache behavior or can I do something to fix this? If not, is there a more memory efficient way of handling big file uploads. Going by the current behavior, I will need 1 GB of free RAM for every apache child accepting a upload. Thanks! Abhaya -

  I am trying to install Visual Studio 2012 on Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit machine, but installation fails. I tried to install all version (premium, ultimate etc..) but getting below error. Machine is not domain joined and logged in as administrative user. I was using Security Essentials but turn it off before the installation. Installation source is from MSDN.   Hello! I want to keep my blog in subfolder domain_com/htdocs/blog and access it using blog.domain.com. I can obtain it using apache's mod_rewrite: RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^blog\.domain\.com RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^/blog RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /blog/$1 [L] But I also want to redirect hxxp://domain.com/blog to hxxp://blog.domain.com (simply because I want to hide it from users).   Problem I'm trying to sell the idea of organizational patch/update management and antivirus management to my superiors. Thus far, my proposition has been met with two responses: We haven't had any issues yet (I would add that we know of) We just don't think it's that big of a risk. Question Are there any resources available that can help me sell this idea? I've been told that 55-85% of all security related issues can be resolved by proper anti-virus and patch/update management but the individual that told me couldn't substantiate the claim. Can it be substantiated? Additional Information 1/5 of our computers (the ones on the building) have Windows update turned on by default and anti-virus installed. 4/5 of our computers are outside corporate and the users currently have full control over anti-virus and Windows updates (I know this is an issue, one step at a time).

  I think the steps are something like: Install DD-WRT on a router with an external hard-drive Install Optware to get Samba Upgrade to Samba 3.6 (the link shows Samba 3.5, but using the NSLU2 optware packages, you can get 3.6 with built-in SMB2.0) ...then a miracle occurs... Then you can use SMB2.0 to connect to your share What is step 4? I can't find it on forums, etc. Am using Microsoft Network monitor to check for SMB2.0 connection, I'm on Windows 7 and have tried network connections on wireless and gigabit wired to the router.   I have a nginx server with load balancing and reverse proxy. Right now its behing another nginx but very soon I plan to make it front, where it will receive TCP connections from clients directly at a rate of 500req/second I am having some big troubles with the server.   I want a cheap multi-function printer for Linux usage. I'm looking for rock solid scanning and printing that works with big images. I'd prefer drivers that are available in Debian, or other drivers that are open source, but will settle for proprietary drivers if they are well contained and clean. Some choices I have are: Samsung SCX-4300 HP LaserJet M1120 MFP Samsung SCX-4500 Canon i-SENSYS MF4010 Brother DCP-7040 I am also interested in opinions what printer communication language is best for Linux usage for cheap printers. PostScript is nice, of course, but low-end PostScript printers often have problems when printing complex (large) PostScript files. It seems Samsung printers use SPL for communication, HP uses XQX and ZJS, then there's ofcourse PCL.

  Most discussions of ZFS suggest that the hardware RAID be turned off and that ZFS should directly talk to the disks and manage the RAID on the host (instead of the RAID controller). This makes sense on a computer with 2-16 or even more local disks, but what about in an environment with a large SAN? For example, the enterprise I work for has what I would consider to be a modest sized SAN with 2 full racks of disks, which is something like 400 spindles. I've seen SAN shelves that are way more dense than ours, and SAN deployments way larger than ours. Do people expose 100 disks directly to big ZFS servers? 300 disks? 3000 disks? Do the SAN management tools facilitate automated management of this sort of thing?

• Is there anyway to build a raid system without all drives?

  I'm building a raid1 (ok it will probably be a raid10,f2 but the difference with 2 drives... isn't much) system with 2 1TB drives. However, 1 of the drives I've ordered is bad so I'm RMA-ing it. I'm wondering if I could partition and install to the 1 drive and then rebuild the array when I get the second drive (after I test it of course) My initial investigation doesn't show me a way of creating the array without specifying all devices... and the device the second drive will be is one that has data that I will need to migrate (plus it's not big enough). Is it possible that I could create an array without specifying all devices? or specify false ones and reconfigure to the right ones later? Or some other method I'm not thinking of.

• How do I fake 2 discrete monitors using a DualHead2Go?

  I just got a [Matrox Dualhead2Go|http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/products/gxm/dh2go/] for use with my MacBook Pro. I realise that the reason it works is that it fakes 1 big (wide) monitor. I also kind of depended on the software that came with it to trick OSX into accepting it as 2 monitors. Turns out the support is kind of lame: it just adds shortcuts for maximizing the window to whatever screen you want. And it even gets that wrong, since my dock doesn't auto-hide, but it doesn't take it in account while resizing, causing my window do end up "behind" my dock. (I've made a AppleScript that does the resize correctly, that I'll post below). There's two glaring issues this causes: Full screen (video, etc.) takes up both monitors, and dialogs just pops up in the middle. Is there a way to trick OSX, or at least a way to fix these issues?

• Hosts that allow email marketing?

  I work for a company that heavily relies on email marketing to make money and we're running into a problem. We are trying to spin up a new email server and are finding it difficult to find a hosting company that doesn't explicitly disallow any form of mass mailing, legitimate or otherwise! Our lists are all opt-in, so the legitimacy issues aren't a problem, and we comply 100% with CAN-SPAM laws, but that doesn't seem to matter to hosting companies. Does anyone else have experience in this market? Can anyone suggest hosting companies that either support ESPs or are at least mass-mailing friendly? I've done lookups on most of the big players in the field and it seems that all of them are hosting their own equipment, which is currently cost prohibitive for us.

• iTunes command+tab does not bring main window the foreground after command+h

  Related to : Cmd-Tab does not bring iTunes to foreground There people claim that command+h will continue to work, but the behavior I'm seeing is: Launch a full screen Terminal instance (or anything else really) Launch a fresh iTunes command+h to hide it command+tab back to iTunes, this works and the main app window is given focus command+tab to Terminal command+tab to iTunes What I expect to happen: the main iTunes window is brought to the foreground and given focus. What does happen: The application menu bar shows iTunes, but an additional command+` is needed to bring the main app to foreground. I thought it might have been related to a Chrome interaction, since I'm usually commmand+tabbing between my browser and everything else, but that does not seem to be the case. I do have two "plugins" running: last.fm scrobbler Alfred app mini itunes player interface Not sure if either of those create some phantom window or something that is mixing something up. Versions of stuff: OS X: 10.6.5 iTunes: 10.1.1 (4) last.fm: can't find it, but it's recent Alfred: 0.8 (89) So after that big long rant, anyone else seeing this behavior?

• Windows Explorer slow response when disconnect from the network

  As a Systems Admin I have seen this issue repeatedly and it drives me crazy. Basically the problem occurs when you open My Documents or My Computer (Windows Explorer) there is a big delay ranging from 5-25 seconds before it actually opens and shows the content. Sometimes the problem continues with each subfolder you open. The problem is most common when disconnected from the network and when you have mapped drives. The most common solution for this problem is to disconnect any mapped drives or printers that are discconected/not reaachable. I have also heard that turning off "Automatically search for network folders and printers" can solve this issue but I have yet to see this work. Does anyone know of any other work arounds for this?

• Backup Client/Server Software that Syncs only the Delta?

  I have a co-located server, and a desktop computer. I push small things and large ammounts of small files (like my iTunes) into a JungleDisk cloud. If a few files change there, no big deal, the file gets re-uped. For larger files JungleDisk backup isn't helpful. Things like movies and VMware images that change a lot, but I want backed up. Just not to JungleDisk since that would cost me even more money. I am looking for a product, closed or open source (preferably open source) that will sync the change, or delta, to my personal server on a schedule. That way I can keep a copy of my larger things, without paying JungleDisk a ton more since they are in the range of many Gigabytes. Right now these few items are backed up over FTP, and take forever. Both the client and server are windows environments.

  I have a new Alienware M17x running Vista x64. I just found out that it came with a misterious "EISA Configuration" partition. On Disk Management, my Disk 0 tells me that my HD has about 300 GB. The EISA partition has 12 GB. That's big enough to know why is it there. So, this is more of a bundle question. What is this "EISA Configuration" partition? Is it safe to remove it somehow? If so, how can I delete it? I mean join it with the primary partition, or set it as a secondary small partition.
