  • Aside from performance concerns, is Java still chosen over Groovy/JRuby etc.?

    [This is an empirical question about the state-of-the-art: I am NOT asking if Java is cooler or less cool than the dynamic languages that work in the JVM.] Aside from cases where performance is a main decision factor, do companies/developers still willingly chose Java over Groovy, JRuby or JPython? Personal Note: The reason I am asking is that, while I do some subset of my professional work in Ruby (not JRuby, for now), in my personal projects I use Java. While I have written non-trivial apps in Groovy, I prefer Java, but I wonder if I should just get over it and do everything in Groovy. I like Java because I feel that static typing saves me time and aids refactoring. (No, I am not familiar with Scala.) However, I feel that this very empirical, on-topic programming question may inform my decision.

  • How to setup custom CSS based on account settings in a Django site?

    So I'm writing a Django based website that allows users select a color scheme through an administration interface. I already have middleware/context processors that links the current request (based on domain) to the account. My question is how to dynamically serve the CSS with the account's custom color scheme. I see two options: Add a CSS block to the base template that overrides the styles w/variables passed in through a context processors. Use a custom URL (e.g. "/static/dynamic/css//styles.css") that gets routed to a view that grabs all the necessary values and creates the css file. I'm content with either option, but was wondering if anyone else out there has dealt with similar problems and could give some insight as to "Best Practices".

  • Silverlight 4 Binding to ConverterParameter

    Hello everybody, I have a ValueConverter which needs to be called with a dynamic parameter, depending on a property. I can't see a way to do this ... Width="{Binding ActualWidthValue, Source={StaticResource VisibleSize}, Converter={StaticResource Fraction}}" The "Fraction" converter get's (or should get) a parameter of type System.Size, which contains a numerator and denumerator. This value (should) depend on a ItemCollection.Count. Resetting the ItemCollection should reinvoke the Converter with the new values. My first idea was to manually change the ConverterParameter in CodeBehind on the PropertyChanged event of my ItemCollection DependencyProperty. But, as I know now, Silverlight has no GetBinding() method. I heard about GetBindingExpression and tried to do. But MyGrid.GetBindingExpression(Grid.ActualHeightProperty) is always returning null, although the Binding is already established. So, what can I do to reach my target?

  • Socket.io Duplicate clients on a namespace

    Hi I'm trying to use dynamic namespace to create them on demand. It's working except that I get duplicate or more client for some reason Server side : io.of("/" + group ).on("connection", function(socket_group) { socket_group.groupId = group; socket_group.on("infos", function(){ console.log("on the group !"); }) socket_group.on('list', function () { Urls.find({'group' : '...'}).sort({ '_id' : -1 }).limit(10).exec(function(err, data){ socket_group.emit('links', data); }); }) [...] }) Client Side : socket.emit('list', { ... }); On the client side only one command is sent but the server is always responding with 2 or more responses.   • Convert JSON flattened for forms back to an object

    I am required (please therefore no nit-picking the requirement, I've already nit-picked it, and this is the req) to convert certain form fields that have "object nesting" embedded in the field names, back to the object(s) themselves. Below are some typical form field names: phones_0_patientPhoneTypeId phones_0_phone phones_1_patientPhoneTypeId phones_1_phone The form fields above were derived from an object such as the one toward the bottom (see "Data"), and that is the format of the object I need to reassemble. It can be assumed that any form field with a name that contains the underscore _ character needs to undergo this conversion. Also that the segment of the form field between underscores, if numeric, signifies a Javascript array, otherwise an object. I found it easy to devise a (somewhat naive) implementation for the "flattening" of the original object for use by the form, but am struggling going in the other direction; below the object/data below I'm pasting my current attempt. One problem (perhaps the only one?) with it is that it does not currently properly account for array indexes, but this might be tricky because the object will subsequently be encoded as JSON, which will not account for sparse arrays. So if "phones_1" exists, but "phones_0" does not, I would nevertheless like to ensure that a slot exists for phones[0] even if that value is null. Implementations that tweak what I have begun, or are entirely different, encouraged. If interested let me know if you'd like to see my code for the "flattening" part that is working.   • Clickin issue in Flash and XML

    Hi, I have the php backend that displays an xml page with data for flash consuming. Flash takes it and creates a textfields dynamicaly based on this information. I have a few items in menu on top and when I click one of them, data is taken from php and everything is displayed in scroll in flash. The problem is that if I click too fast between menu items, then I get buggy layout.   • Issues adding search to iPhone app

    Hi, Basically I'm trying to add a search function to my iPhone app, but I'm not having much luck at the moment. I've downloaded the Apple provided Table Search app, and have copied across the code to mine. It builds OK, but here's the problem. Unlike the Apple example, all my data is stored in an array, that is accessed by calling [ciParser.currentArray]. Any ideas on how to change the code to suit my needs? I'm getting an error "Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSRangeException', reason: '* -[NSCFArray objectAtIndex:]: index (0) beyond bounds (0)'" whenever I click on the search bar and the app exits. Below is the code in particular that the debugger highlights as being troublesome. Apparently this error means the database trying to be searched is empty, but I could be wrong.
