• Need to adjust touchpad edge scroll area

  I have an Acer Aspire that I have dual booting XP and Ubuntu. On the Windows side, the driver allows you to set how close your finger has to be to the edge of the touchpad before it goes into scroll mode. In Ubuntu I don't have the option (at least in the GUI) to change the scroll area on the pad. Is there a conf file or other way to change this? I'm constantly getting into the scroll area during normal usage. I would like to leave it on without losing so much pad area to the scroll feature. Thanks a lot.

• How to copy a DVD [closed]

  I was offered a couple of DVDs from abroad that cannot be played on my player due to region filtering. So I tried k9copy to copy the DVD (it removes the region automatically). But for some reasons the copy does not work well (followed the instructions from here but the generated ISO file does not work / not even in media player - additionally there are many bugs in k9copy 2.3.5 (latest from Ubuntu) showing that it is not a reliable software, at least not on Gnome...). My question is simple: how to copy a DVD on Ubuntu, the copy/ISO being as close to the original, but without the region code.

• Can I toggle word-wrapping on/off quickly in Gedit?

  Depending on nature of the text, some times line wrapping is convenient, some times it is just confusing. And every time I need to switch this (pretty frequently) I have to do to View - Preferences - Enable text wrapping - Close - 4 clicks, not mentioning all the hand, eye and thought motion. Can this be done a quicker way? Most of text editors have this 2 clicks away (in a menu) at maximum, some have it on a toolbar or a hot key, but I couldn;t find any quick way in Gedit :-( Maybe there is a hot key I don't know?

• access denied when trying to open terminal on desktop

  ok so heres the skinny. I just moved some file using the sudo su command so i can move them to bin folder in file system then after closing terminal tried to reopen from desktop and got permission denied. I then rebooted and now i cant access my account and when trying to login it starts to boot then back to login screen. I then boot up in xterm and i get this message bash: /home/chris/.bashrc:Permission denied. I'm currently running xubuntu 10.04 and would like to get back in to that user. Can someone please help me. Not a noob but close to it. Thanks to anyone who helps and the quicker the better.

• How to fix missing menus in non ubuntu maverick apps

  Hi! There's a bug with the menue of filezilla: When opening filezilla there is no menue list. Very inconvenient because you can't open the "settings"-dialog. There are several workarounds that I tried - none of them really work. change theme while filezilla is running, menue reapperars. Once you close and reopen it the menue is gone again. add "export UBUNTU_MENUPROXY=0" " to .bash.rc or just call it before starting filezilla. Doesn't have any effect for me - menue still missing. tried "sudo apt-get remove appmenu-gtk" cause it's obviously to do with unity but the funny thing is even this method has bo effect at all! How can I fix this? How to do the troubleshooting? thx fior reading, p.

• Why ubuntu 13.10 always show "access prompt" when start?

  After my Ubuntu PC update from 13.04 to 13.10, when start up, an access prompt always show and ask me password for "[email protected]". I was input password for email or another services, which registed with "[email protected]", but it's still "incorect". I can close but next time, it appears again. It never appeared before 13.10. What is application show that prompt? How can I turn off this? Here is access prompt?

• Independent Research on 1500 Companies Reveals Challenges in Performance Visibility – Part 1

  At the end of May I was joined by Professor Andy Neely of Cambridge University on a webinar, with an audience of over 700, to discuss the results of this extensive study which covered 13 countries and nearly every commercial and industrial sector.  What stunned both of us was not so much the number listening but the 100 questions they asked in just 1 hour.  This certainly represents a record in my experience and for those that organized the webinar. So what was all the fuss about?  Well, to begin with this was a pretty big sample and it represented organizations with over $100m sales across the USA, Europe, Africa and the Middle East. It also delivered some pretty interesting results across a wide range of EPM subjects such as profitability, planning and reporting.  Let’s look at some of those findings. We kicked off with profitability, one of the key factors in driving performance, or that is what you would think, but in fact 82% of our respondents said they did not have complete visibility into the profitability of their organization. 91% of these went further to say that, not surprisingly, this lack of knowledge into the profitability has implications with over half citing 3 or more implications.  Implications cited included misallocated resources, revenue opportunities not maximized, erroneous decisions made and impaired financial performance.  Quite a list of implications, especially given the difficult economic circumstances many organizations are operating in at this time. So why is this?  Well other results in the study point to some of the potential reasons.  Firstly 59% of respondents that use spreadsheets use them for monitoring profitability and 93% of all managers responding to the study use spreadsheets to gather and analyze information.  This is an enormous proportion given the problems with using spreadsheets based performance management systems that have been widely talked about for many years.  For profitability analysis this is particularly important when you consider the typical requirement will be to allocate cost and revenue across 6+ dimensions based on many different allocation methods.  Not something that can be done easily in spreadsheets plus it gets to be a nightmare once you want to change allocations, run different scenarios and then change the basis of your planning and budgeting! It is no wonder so many organizations have challenges in performance visibility. • Reasons for Pair Programming

  I've worked in a few shops where management has passed the idea of pair programming either to me or another manager/developer, and I can't get behind it at all. From a developer stand-point I can't find a reason why moving to this coding style would be beneficial, nor as a manager of a small team have I seen any benefit. I understand that it helps on basic syntax errors and can be helpful if you need to hash something out, but managers that are out of the programming loop seem to keep seeing it as a way of keeping their designers from going to Facebook or Reddit than as a design tool. As someone close to the development floor that apparently can't quite understand from a book tossed my way or a wiki page on the subject... from a high level management position, what are the benefits of Pair Programming when dealing with Scrum or Agile environments?

• Resources for a fighting game

  As the title says, I need resources for a 2D fighting game for the PC. The game is being made by me and two close friends. I'm thinking of using the FlatRedBall engine and either Allegro Sprite Editor or Amiga DPaint for the sprites, but I don't know is there is anything better for a more or less beginner in video game making. So my questions are as follows, what would be the best engine to use so that we could also sell the game later on, (I don't really care what language I'd have to use) and what would be the best thing to use for sprite creating? I would really appreciate any help given.

• OpenGL ES, orthopgraphics projection and viewport

  I want to make some simple 2D game on iOS to familiarize myself with OpenGL ES. I started with Ray Wenderlich tutorial (How To Create A Simple 2D iPhone Game with OpenGL ES 2.0 and GLKit). That tutorial is quite good, but I miss some parts of a puzzle. Ray creates orthographic projection using some magic numbers like 480 and 320. It is not clear to me why did he take these numbers, and as far as I can see - sprite is not mapped to the ipad simulator screen one-to-one pixel. I tried to play with parameters with which ortho matrix is created, but I cannot figure out what math is here. How can I calculate numbers (bottom, top, left, right, close, far) which will be parameters to orthographic projection matrix creation and have sprite on the screen shown in its original size?

• How to remove space between application and workspace switcher on Unity launcher?

  I just downloaded Ubuntu 11.10 for the first time. I really enjoy the launcher on the left hand side but have a problem. After playing around with adding applications in it, there are large spaces from the last application to workspace switcher. If I try to drag a new application into the launcher everything moves farther down, instead of filling in the space in between apps. When I right click on the launcher in a blank spot it reads "drop to add application." I'm looking for a way to have all of the applications close together with no spaces, like when I first downloaded Ubuntu.

• Closing lid freezes laptop

  Closing the lid on my dell studio 15 which is running ubuntu 10.04 freezes the screen. This is a new problem in ubuntu 10.04 which did not exist in 9.10 I have tried playing with all the settings in System-Preferences-Screensaver but nothing seems to make any difference. (please note the Power Management settings are accessible from here so I have tried those too.) I don't need hibernate or suspend. I just want to be able to close the lid, and then open it and still have a working laptop. Is their a settings somewhere that will make Ubuntu ignore the lid closing?

• Compiz does not work with proprietary nvidia driver

  I have a ThinkPad T420 with an NVidia Quadro video card. It crashes constantly when I close this lid (if you are curious..) and I suspect on a problem with nouveau drivers, so I installed the proprietary NVidia drivers. Howeer, when I install and use this driver, Compiz does not work. If I start a session with uses Compiz, no window manager/decorator is presented. I just can get Metacity working. Does anyone has any idea about what may be causing this problem?

• Can you change a license once you pick one?

  I am working on a product that I don't feel is completely ready but I have a set of users that are very interested in using it now as "alpha" testers. I would like to give them the product now for free as "alpha" testers, but I would like to later license the software. Is this possible? Can anyone point me to any links/books/articles/etc? Thanks. EDIT: Due to the lack of my clarity and the reponses to the question I thought I should add this statement. I haven't decided if I am going to close-source or open-source this project yet. The user base that wants to get their hands on it now has kind of surprised me and I was concerned about what my options are as far as being able to give it to them now as open-source and later change to closed-source, or even vice versa. • Correct way to sell commercial product with GPL small scripts in it

I use jQuery, also I use date and time picker jQuery plugin in my cms, I can say this is just a 1% of my big script, I don't want sell my whole program as GPL because of these two small integrations (jQuery and DateTime picker). Please ask on these questions: I'm worry about license issue. What is the best way to sell my product(licensing type)? Is there any way to provide some partial licenses? I mean just add small notification in my license that the jQuery and The DateTime picker is still in GPL, but other part of this CMS has commercial license? If there isn't any way to sell commercial product as close source with GPL small parts, what is the most strong license for selling my product to keep it safe? Please sorry for my English

• Strange behavior of flash in Google Chrome

  I have the last version of Chrome 5.0.xx. and my Ubuntu is also of the last version 10.04. What I usually do is to open two instances of Chrome and divide the screen into two parts. In one part my son watches cartoons in Youtube and in the other part I just read some news. So, sometimes, when I close some pages of the news I have being read the video which was being played in youtube crashes and immediately stops. I need to refresh youtube page and see the video again. • Is it a bad idea to get a Master's and Bachelor's Degree from the same university?

  I'm getting close to graduation and am strongly considering continuing to a Master's Program. My long-term goal for the future is to stay in industry rather than pursuing a Ph.D/Academic career. While communicating these thoughts with some of my peers, I've been told that staying in the same University for both a Bachelor's and Master's degree is ill-advisable. The reasons seem to be based along the lines of lack of exposure to other opportunities, programs, and faculty. My question is, if I intend to pursue a career outside of the Ph.D/Academic spectrum, will staying at the same university for my master's really decrease my value in software related positions? If so (or if not), why?

• JCP.Next Progress Updates

  JSR 355, JCP Executive Committee Merge, is currently nearing the end of the Public Review period.  Review the current draft here and provide feedback here.  The review closes on 12 June 2012.  The JCP Executive Committee met face to face in Sao Paulo, Brazil earlier in May, and has published a revision (version 2.1) of the EC Standing Rules.  The EC Standing Rules were introduced in October 2011 with the launch of JCP version 2.8 (JSR 348).  Version 2.1 of the EC Standing Rules will modify rules for attendance at EC face-to-face meetings. Remote observers will be permitted in "read-only" mode but unless a member attends in person they will be counted as absent.  The review period for these changes will close on June 30 2012.  Please comment on the proposed changes by logging an issue in the JCP EC issue tracker.

• Google analytics/adwords account and leaking of private data

  I am frequently asked to log into clients google analytics and adwords accounts. If I forget to log out before visiting other google properties (google search, youtube etc), this leaves tracks of my views/searches etc, exposing my activities to the client. Summary: Client gives me access to their Google Analytics / AdWords account I log into clients Analytics account and do some stuff Then in another tab I perform some related google searches to solve some related issues Issues solved, I then close the Analytics tab I then visit google.com, perform some unrelated searches I then visit YouTube, view some unrelated videos All Web and YouTube searches are recorded in clients google account, thus leaking potentially sensitive data Even assuming that I remember to log out correctly at step 4 (as I do 95% of the time), anything I do at step 3 is exposed to the client. I would be surprised if this is not a very common issue. I'm looking for a technical solution to ensure that this can never happen. Any ideas?

• What are the tactics used to discover what kind of affiliate products will do well in your website?

  I'm starting to post some affiliate ads on my website. As it happens, I am not even close to making a sale. I'm not sure if the products I have chosen will appeal to the audience I have. I'm not sure if the volume of traffic is enough to support affiliate programs. I get about 8000-9000 visitors everyday. But since its growing constantly, thats not much of a worry. • Why is my ruby application running faster the second time?

  I'm creating a Ruby game using the Gosu framework. All good. Sometimes, when I run the game, it has some kind of slow startup, and probably it will be rather slow during the whole game. So I close it and... open it again. It is very likely that it will startup quickly and the whole game will run smoothly and fast. Why is that? What is this phenomenon? Is it faster because of some cache stored or whatever since the first run? (But why would cache be stored? If the app dies, I would expect no references at all etc...) Ruby, Windows 7.

How would I go about writing such a crawler to search the web for geo tagged data close to a particular location? What would a general road map look like? • problem connecting to wifi at long range

  I am using a compaq 8510p with internal wifi. The campground supplies an open wifi hotspot, to which I can connect at close range (30 ft) but not at longer range (300 ft). Connecting a usb dongle just confuses things. The dongle tries to lock on to all the wifi networks in my vicinity. They are password protected, but my laptop still tries to connect. I connected a cantenna via usb port and got a signal which said I was connected, but all web pages returned error 'unable to connect to server', despite having three bars showing on the wifi icon. I believe it because the installed wifi card interacts with the usb dongle. If so what can I do about it? I am using Ubuntu 12.04.
