• How to approach multiple page form with just one save option

  The screen shot shows the magento product upload page. The left nav allows you to switch to different options for the product. Basically each option in the left nav appears as a different page. However when you save and close, it will save all the updates made on each page. Using Foundation4, html, css, js - what would be the best approach to replicating something similar? Say I want 3 pages and one save button option. Using http://foundation.zurb.com/docs/components/section.html#panel2 and having the save buttons the top line form level seems a possible option.

• The type of programmer I want to be [closed]

  I'm an undergraduate Software Engineer student, although I've decided that pure programming is what I want to do for the rest of my life. The thing is that programming is a vast field and although most of its aspects are extremely interesting, soon or later I'll have to choose one (?) to focus on. I have several ideas on small projects I'd like to develop this summer, having in mind that this will gain me some experience and, in the best scenario, some cash. But the most important reason I'd like to develop something close to “professional” is to give myself direction on what I want to do as a programmer. One path is that of the Web Programmer. I enjoy PHP and MySQL, as well as HTML and CSS, although I don't really like ASP.NET. I can see myself writing web apps, using the above technologies, as well as XML and Javascript. I also have a neat idea on a Facebook app. The other path is that of the Desktop Programmer. This is a little more complicated cause I really-really enjoy high level languages such as Java and Python but not the low level ones, such as C. I use both Linux and Windows for the last 6 years and I like their latest DEs (meaning Gnome Shell and Metro). I can see myself writing desktop applications for both OSs as long as it means high level programming. Ideally I'd like being able to help the development of GNOME. The last path that interests me is the path of the Smartphone Programmer. I have created some sample applications on Android and due to Java I found it a quite interesting experience. I can also see myself as an independent smartphone developer. These 3 paths seem equally interesting at the moment due to the shallowness of my experience, I guess. I know that I should spend time with all of them and then choose the right one for me but I'd like to know what are the pros and cons in terms of learning curve, fun, job finding and of course financial rewards with each of these paths. I have fair or basic understanding of the languages/technologies I described earlier and this question will help me choose where to focus, at least for now.

  In my production environment, I have close to 10 Ubuntu 12.04 Servers and I want to get the list of users from them. I am looking for some kind of script or tool (non-gui) to get the same. Yes, I can get the list from /etc/passwd and /etc/groups files but it would be good to have a tool or script to do this due to the following reasons. I have right now 10 systems in Ubuntu and 30 systems in Windows 2003. I am recommending my organization and IT to move all the systems to Ubuntu except the one running MS SQL server We do not have good Ubuntu admins with us and they should not mess up with the system if I give some manual commands I also need to find out date of creation of user, group, password standards like strength, expiry etc Please help me as I want to automate the process and get the list on weekly basis from IT team. • HP 655 notebook (ubuntu 12.04) keeps consuming energy after closing the lid

  I am unable to change power settings so that when I close the lid the battery stops consuming energy. There are three options in the power settings menu: When the screen is closed: 1 Do nothing 2 Pause 3 Sleep First I could not change anything. I see all the options but I could not click on option 2 and 3. (grey text instead of black) I already made it possible to put in to sleep mode. But I can't pause (suspend) the laptop. Anyone an idea?

• How do I turn off the laptop screen while using an external monitor?

  When I close my laptop lid, all my screens are turned off (my laptop screen and my LG M237WA monitor). I'd like to know how do I make it turn off only the laptop screen and keep the monitor on (I want that behaviour for when I want to watch a movie on my monitor and don't want any brightness coming for the laptop screen). I'm using a HP Pavilion dv4-1290br, which comes with a nVidia GeForce 8400M GTS. I'm using the nVidia driver and it's working perfectly. For my X settings, I'm using TwinView, my laptop is set to 1280x800 and my monitor to 1920x1080. I hope you guys can help me, for I couldn't find anything so far. Thank you very much.

• XORG Issues- reported bug, what next

  On Ubuntu 11.10 64 bit, after watching a video on VLC, I started getting screen freezes and unresponsive keyboard, and the mouse moves but clicking it doesn't do anything. I created a bug (1055240) and provided additional information but I'm not sure what happens next. I ran apport-collect 1055240 as suggested and somewhere during that process it told me to ask my question on Ask Ubuntu. So I'm wondering if y'all can tell me what I need to do? AFAIK I have provided the additional information that was requested. My PC is getting close to the point of becoming unusable- I just don't know which flash video is going to be the next one to cause it to lock up :-(

• XNA Octree with batching

  I'm integrating batching in my engine. However I'm using an octree which is auto generated around my scene. Now batching renders a hole group at ones while an octree sorts out which objects that should be rendered within the camera frustum, therefore dividing the group. Batching and octree doesn't go along very well, right? Problem: The way I see it I have two options, either create batch groups based on objects who are close to one another within the octree or I can rebuild the batching matrixbuffer for the instances visible each frame. Which approach should I go with or does there exist another solution?

• Does language endorsement by different platforms (Android, iOS) hurt app development?

  Developing iOS or OSX based applications typically requires knowledge of Objective C, since XCode is highly tailored to this language. Android, on the other hand, has chosen Java as it's preferred language for app development. Now, I know other programming languages can be used to develop applications on either platform, but lets be honest, it's a lot easier (and encouraged) to develop apps using these "native languages." As a new app developer, it seems like it would be much easier if there was a common language and development environment for developing applications on all the major platforms. This thought is probably too idealistic for a programming discussion, and I wouldn't be surprised if the SE vultures flew in to close this topic. But, here's my question. Do you think that language endorsement creates unreasonable barriers to entry for new programmers, or do you think it's beneficial in some way (if so, why) for these platforms to use completely different development environments and languages for app development?

• Best practice to identify and kill hanging process, when system hangs and reacts slowly on user input?

  Recently when I tried to open a video with VLC, my system slowed down, the open applications webbrowser, VLC and filemanager and others didn't react any longer. The mouse just reacted still very slowly. On a windows machine i would press a keycombi CTRL-ALT-DEL to open the taskmanager, search the process which caused the hang and kill it. Since i'm fairly new with the use of linux i haven't figured out the best practice for solve such a situation in Ubuntu. Which quick and effective way would you recommend to identify the hanging process and close it, when the system already reacts very slowly on user input?

• Frustrated by the VS2012 'Light' and 'Dark' themes?

  Like me you may be have been frustrated by the lack of colour in VS2012. The flat look, reminicent of the early 'Gem' OS is bad enough, but when the only choices are a washed out white look or the deadly all-black look, it's not an easy product to work with.Fortunately MS themselves seem to have quietly taken notice of this, or at least one of their developers has, and a 'Color Theme Editor' extension has been released. This comes with some much better colour schemes (I'm using the blue one, which is fairly close to VS2010) and also allows you to create and edit themes youself.This extension doesn't come up when you search 'Extensions and Updates' but can be found at http://tinyurl.com/6rhkdejWith this, using VS2012 finally becomes a pleasurable experience.

  Whenever I'm plugging in my external monitor into my notebook and changing the screen resolution to the maximum state, the desktop will get broken in a way: A third of the whole desktop space is not visible at all. I can see the whole panel as well as the Unity side bar to the left, but the desktop space with all the windows in it is not completely visible. It's blanked out. In case of opening the Unity menu bar, I can type something in it. As soon as close the menu bar, the upper part stays visible and hangs: Any ideas about that issue?

• Can turning off drm_kms_helper polling affect screen brightness control?

  I have a Samsung R430 notebook that has been running Ubuntu for close to a year, now. Since I've upgrated to Maverick, I've been dealing with little, but increasingly annoying issues, that put my faith to question. The first one, a CPU-intensive set of drm_kms_helper, made me compile my own kernel and set polling to off just so I could move my mouse without frequent stuttering. That led me to dealing with a screen that gets dimmer and dimmer after each sleep/wake-up cycle, which eventually leads me to reboot. Since I have seen some KMS and brightness related bugs around, I was wondering if it is a definite cause for my problem. If so, has there been any advance on the excessive polling issue for those of us plagued by it?

• Distro that I can load into RAM?

  Is there a modified version of Ubuntu that I can choose to load to RAM on start up? Kinda like the LiveCD, but that can be easily modified (ie: I can install stuff) when I choose to boot from disk. The idea is to install it to a USB drive. I know there's something similar but slax is lacking in many departments. A "full" version Ubuntu would be better. A LiveUSB installation seems to be pretty close to what I want, but apparently I have to choose whether or not it will be persistent by the time I install it. I want to be able to choose that every time I boot.

Prevent development Web Service references from breaking when Visual Studio auto generates a new port number. Why do I care?  We have all been there, we are developing a Silverlight Application and all of a sudden our development web services break. We check and find out that the local port number that Visual Studio assigned has changed and now we need up to update all of our service references. We need a way to stop this. How do I do it: This can actually be prevented with just a few mouse click. Right click on your web solution and goto properties. Click the tab that says, Web. You just need to click the radio button and specify a port number. Now you won’t be bothered with that anymore. Tip/Trick #19) What is it? You can disable the Close Button a ChildWindow. Why do I care?  I wouldn’t blog about it if I hadn’t seen it. Devs trying to override keystrokes to prevent users from closing a Child Window. How do I do it: A property exist on the ChildWindow called “HasCloseButton”, you simply change that to false and your close button is gone. You can delete the “Cancel” button and add some logic to the OK button if you want the user to respond before proceeding. Tip/Trick #20) What is it? Cleanup your XAML. Why do I care?  By removing unneeded namespaces, not naming all of your controls and getting rid of designer markup you can improve code quality and readability. How do I do it: (This is a 3 in one tip) Remove unused Designer markup: 1) Have you ever wondered what the following code snippet does? xmlns:d="http://schemas.microsoft.com/expression/blend/2008" xmlns:mc="http://schemas.openxmlformats.org/markup-compatibility/2006" mc:Ignorable="d" d:DesignWidth="640" d:DesignHeight="480" This code is telling the designer to do something special with this page in “Design mode” Specifically the width and the height of the page. When its running in the browser it will not use this information and it is actually ignored by the XAML parser. In other words, if you don’t need it then delete it. 2) If you are not using a namespace then remove it. In the code sample below, I am using Resharper which will tell me the ones that I’m not using by the grayed out line below. If you don’t have resharper you can look in your XAML and manually remove the unneeded namespaces. 3) Don’t name an control unless you actually need to refer to it in procedural code. If you name a control you will take a slight performance hit that is totally unnecessary if its not being called. <TextBlock Height="23" Text="TextBlock" />   That is the end of the series. • Ubuntu crash problem, need fix

  Upgraded to 12.04 LTS Beta 2, on a Dimension E310. The unity Sidebar crashes while I use Software Center. The only way I can close Software center Is to either power off my computer or use force quit app on the unity side bar. Thats why I believe it's the sidebar crashing instead of the software center. But the other problem is, apport don't recognize the bug so nothing is sent. How do I file this bug? I looked in VAR/Crash and there was no crash report.

• cursor jumps when moving (and some other times)

  i updated to 12.10 beta 1 when it was released (coming from 12.04 fresh install, i skipped the alpha releases of 12.10) since then i've done all the usual updates but ive had an issue with my cursor jumping. it does not jump when typing, i've done a lot of searching and cant find an answer, it tends to happen most when i move the cursor the jump is maybe 15-20 pixels down and to the right it seems like a display issue because if i hover over a link or the x to close a window the cursor will settle in it's down/right position, but the whatever im hovering over will still act as if that's where the mouse is, and clicking still works on the item. so the mouse is actually in its original location, but it's displaying offset and flickering back and forth from its down/right position and its correct position this makes use very difficult because the mouse is never displayed where it actually is and i have to estimate my clicks any ideas?

• programs becoming unresponsive

  I have changed from Mint 13 to Ubuntu, complete fresh install. However I regularly get programs becoming unresponsive seems to be more after when switching between screens or work places. eg before i was using firefox have 2 pop up screens(no junk ones) bank login and an ebay chat, switching between them and then firefox faded to grey and I had to force close as it become unresponsive. Ubuntu is very nice to use, but I never had these problems using mint 13. Is this common, are there any fixes coming??

  My scene consists of individual meshes. At the moment each mesh has its associated light map texture, I was able to implement the light mapping using these many small textures. 1) Of course, I want to create an atlas, but how do you split atlases to pages, I mean do you group the lm's of objects that are close to each other, and load light maps on the fly if scene is expected to be big. 2) the 3d authoring software provides automatic uv coordinates for each mesh in the scene, but there are empty areas in the texel space, so if I scale the texture polygons the texel density of each face wil not match other meshes, if I create atlas like that there will be varying lm resolution, how do you solve this, just leave it as it is, or ignore resolution ? Actually these questions also applies to other non tiled maps.
