• Why can't I index a SUBST'd drive in Windows7?

  I've got a SUBST for a folder to drive letter P: I have noticed that exploring these folders from P: is now INCREDIBLY slow, taking up to a minute sometimes to show files. I'm showing them as general files and not thumbnails, so it's not that. Looking at the original folder in explorer is lightning fast. I've checked the indexing options and indeed the folder where my files are stored is checked as indexed. I can see my P: drive in the list, but clicking on the checkbox won't do anything. It's not even checkable. Does anyone have any clues as to how I can fix this? (Running Windows 7 just to be clear).

• Can Excel show a formula and its result simultaneously?

  I know that it's possible in Excel to toggle between displaying values and displaying formulas. I'm required to turn in assignments for a statistics class as a printed Excel sheet showing both the formula and the result. Right now the instructor makes us either copy the formula and paste it as text next to the computed value, or copy the value and paste it next to the formula. This is very inefficient, prone to error (if you change the formula or values after doing the copy-paste), and generally a waste of time. Is there any way to have Excel show the formula and its value in the same cell? If not, is there any function which will display the formula from a referenced cell as plain text, e.g. =showformula(A1) which would print out =sum(A2:A5) instead of 25 (if those were the formula and value of cell A1)? I'm using Excel 2010, but a general answer that works for any recent edition of Excel would be nice.

• How to prevent these executables from starting up?

  After removing the following executables from starting up, in the near future they reappear again: DDMService.exe: Re-enabled when visiting a DivX video online. DivXUpdate.exe: Re-enabled when visiting a DivX video online. GoogleUpdate.exe: Re-enabled task, I think by Google Chrome? I see no auto-update option. iPodService.exe: Re-enables after starting iTunes. iTunesHelper.exe: Re-enables after starting iTunes, useless on SSDs. Reader_sl.exe: Re-enables when updating Adobe Reader, useless on SSDs. It bores me that these processes keep popping back up, while my software functions well without them. I'm smart enough to update the software weekly through FileHippo so I don't need automatic updates. What can I do to never see these processes again? Even after reinstallation of those applications... A general solution is also welcome! :-)

• Thin web server - single or multiple instances per IP address:port?

  I'm deploying a rack/sinatra/web socket app onto several servers and will use thin as the web server (http://code.macournoyer.com/thin/). There are almost no views to show, so I am not front-ending it with a traditional web server like Apache or nginx. In general, you see thin started and the underlying config file for it has the number of server instances to start, say 3, and the port to start with, say 5000. So, in my example, when thin starts, it starts up three instances on a range of ports, starting on port 5000. If I have a series of virtual machines, say 3, 6, 9, etc. that I treat as a cluster, would/should I choose to start a single thin instance on each VM, or multiple instances on each VM? Why? • SSD runs faster on Windows as compared to Linux [closed]

  Windows 7 seems to install, boot and run much smoother & faster than each the three linux distros I have recently tried (Ubuntu 12.04 unity, Linux mint 13 MATE, and Fedora 17 on gnome 3.4). Why am I facing bad performance in Linux? I have tweaked my Linux installs for the SSD (enabling trim, disabling swap, etc.) I'm using an Acer TravelMate with i5-2410m processor, intel hd 3000 graphics, 8 gigs of ram, and a 256 gb samsung 830 ssd. Edit: Boot times are 10-15 seconds slower, there is noticeable delay from login to fully loaded desktop, and in general does not appear to be as responsive as my old windows 7 install or the Linux guests I had running on it.

• Do I need to conver the older Access Database, and, if so, how?

  I have an Access 2003 database. When I click on a pivot table, I get this message MS Access There isn't enough memory to complete the Automation object operation on the worksheet object. There is a lot of discussion concerning this message. Here is one link. http://community.spiceworks.com/topic/113228-access-2003-file-pivot-table-issue-when-opening-in-access-2010 But this particular link's explanation doesn't really go into fixing the problem in general, like fixing the pivot tables and getting things all nicely back together in the original Access database. That's why I am also interested in converting the database to 2010 format if that is possible. Are there instructions -- I cannot currently find them and would very much appreciate a link -- on dealing with this problem in a nice stepwise fashion?

• How can I install another locale for Firefox?

  I've installed FF 3.6.3 on a multi-user system with the German language; however I'ld like to have everything in English (interface, etc.) for my user without installing a separate version of FF in english. I've found the setting general.useragent.locale and an extesion, Quick locale switcher, but I don't actually understand where to get the locale from (en_US in my case, I guess). I found pointers directing me to the offical FTP release server with the hint to download the appropriate locale XPI, e.g. from http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/3.6.3/win32/en-US/ , however there's none.

• What are 'damaged files' on external hard drive (HFS format for OS X)?

  I have an external HD formatted to default HFS (Mac OS Extended - Journaled) and very once and a while I get a folder called DamagedFiles in the root of the volume. The folder contains a collection of links to files on the drive. In general the files seem fine as I am for example able to open the images or text files without a problem. Is this serious? What can I do to fix this problem? Any advice would be great as I couldn't find anything on here or via Google that addressed this problem in particular. Many thanks.

• Set 802.1Q tagged port on VLAN1 on Dell PowerConnect switch

  I'm having big troubles when adding this Dell switch to my network. Here we use several VLANs to segment traffic. All switches (3com and DLink mostly) have configured the same VLANs, most ports are 'untagged' and belong to a single VLAN, except for the ports used to join together the switches (in a star topology), these ports belong to all VLANs and use 802.1Q tags. So far, it works really well. But on this new switch (a Dell PowerConnect 5448), the settings are very different (and confusing). I have configured the same VLANs, an the uplink ports are set in 'general' mode (supposed to be fully 802.1Q compliant), I can set the VLAN membership as 'T' on these ports for all VLANs except VLAN 1. It always stay as 'U' on VLAN 1. Any ideas?

• Hide Win 8.1 "tip" about "Switch between apps"?

  I've just installed Win8.1 and I'm trying to set up IIS. When I open Add remove programs from the start menu I get the pc-settings app. In the pc-settings app I get a "tooltip" or whatever we should call it, that hints me to "Switch between apps" by swiping from the edge. Well fine, but I don't want to do that right now, and I can't get that tip to dissapear. The tip lingers on even into Visual Studio, covering my code. I can't swipe because I don't have a touch screen, and also I'm on a multimonitor system that shows this tip in the middle of the screen. Here's a screenshot for you, where I put the web browser slightly over the left monitor. So, besides rebooting, how am I supposed to kill this very informative tip? EDIT When I kill the app by alt-f4 it dissapears right until I open the settings app again, then it's back. What I'm asking about is how to dismiss items like this in general.

• IE 9 home page is hijacked by avg

  I definitely know how to change the home page in Internet Explorer (Tools -> Options -> General). The problem is, no matter what I put there, it never changes. Stop/restart Internet Explorer and the old home page is back. I did some research to see if there is a registry key that I could tweak to get the home page to set properly. I changed the start page registry key and refreshed the view and the start page key (without even restarting regedit) was reset back to its original value. Now I'm a little concerned. • Distribute Nagios to reduce false alarms

  I'm currently running a single Nagios instance. From time to time, I'm getting false alarms about timeouts - for example, it says that HTTP is down on some server, but when I open it in my browser several seconds later, it loads fast, and in general there is no trace of an error. What can I do to reduce such false alarms? I'm guessing that it's because of transient network issues on my monitoring server. I guess that setting up another monitoring server on a different network would greatly help, but how do I plug it into Nagios? Is it at all possible with Nagios or do I have to switch to another monitoring system? I like my configs and, if possible, I'd like to stay with Nagios or something compatible (Icinga?)

• Cannot add Windows 7 client to SBS 2008

  I have just installed SBS 2008 R2 Standard on VMware Workstation 9 along with Windows 7 Pro N. Both are activated and running fine. I have followed the steps to configure SBS 2008 and am now at the point where I'm to add a computer to the domain. Here is where the problem begins. I have gone through the steps of using the webinterface. On the client I downloaded Launcher.exe. I then run it and get the error "Check computer requirements - Failed" (translated from swedish): "This computer doesn't reach the requirements for connecting to the network." "The computer doesn't reach the maximum requirements for the operating system with regards to connect to the network" The provided link for More information only leads to a general supportpage and doesn't handle this specific error. I have also checked the time settings and they are correct. Any clue as to what this problem could be?

• Windows 7 Natively on Mac OS X Bootcamp, Airport Wifi Unable To Connect

  I am using a brand new MacBook Pro. I am running a copy of Windows 7 natively via bootcamp (No use of Virtual Machine Software at all). However the only way I can get Windows to connect to the internet is via ethernet, as opposed to the Macs Airport card picking up the wireless. It just refuses to connect, and gives me a limited access status. Any ideas!? I've run Windows XP natively via bootcamp and I had a few issues with the network constantly dropping out, however I blamed that on the drivers and the general shiteness of XP.... Help greatly appreciated.

• Google Chrome gets really slow on 10+ open tabs

  For some time already I face a problem with Google Chrome. I really love this browser, but on Windows 7 on a pretty decent machine (i5, 4GB RAM) it gets REALLY slow when I open for instance 10 techcrunch.com pages. Once I do that it becomes virtually difficult to scroll through pages and the general responsiveness of the browser gets down. And if I open 20+ or 30+ tabs there is a good chance all of them will crash. Does anyone got an idea? This happens to me on several PCs with Windows 7 64bit. At 10 tabs there is 600-700MB memory used by Chrome. Two systems have the issue are both laptops with integrated graphics. One by Intel, the other an nVidia GeForce 310M.

• Standalone server setup for compute capacity

  I'm developing an application for my company that will require a lot of compute capacity (running some very big mathematical calculations), and looking for some form of server setup to do this. For various reasons, we want to run this on-site in our office rather than hosting it externally. It's been a while since I last had to set up my own servers so I thought I would tap into the collective wisdom of serverfault! My broad requirements are: Budget $30-50k, with an aim to get as much compute capacity as possible for that budget 64-bit servers suitable to run Ubuntu Linux + Java Some relatively standalone rack that can be installed in secure office space Fast/low latency network connections between the servers, but don't really care about connectivity to the outside world Storage capacity shared between the servers - they don't necessarily need their own storage providing they can be booted from a common image Downtime can be tolerated (since the calculations are run in batch mode) The software itself is fault-tolerant, so there is no need for extra resiliency in the server setup (cheap replaceable commodity parts will be fine in general) Given these requirements what kind of setup would you recommend and why?

• Excel 2010 started changing my numbers

  If I type in a 16 digit number (format: number, no decimals) it changes the number on me. Example: 1234567812345678 changes the view to 1234567812345670. If I type it in as a general format it changes the numbers above so it displays 1.23457E+15 but if you click on the cell, the display shows the last digit as a 0 instead of an 8 once again. I opened the file on a different computer and same issue now with it. I have changed the auto correcting and auto formating all to no avail. Help!

• Does using VLANs in your network infrastructure cause an appreciable decrease in performance?

  This is something I've never considered before and wanted the opinions of the experts. We use VLANs day in and day out for various network tasks. My modus operandi is that in general, if something supports VLANs, that port is getting trunked because it just makes a ton of sense if there's even the slightest chance you need to do more than one thing on that single link. As I ponder this, though, I'm wondering whether there's a performance penalty involved with this line of thinking? Is the impact negligible?

  I have to maintain a system (debian) on which several users are allowed to install programs - so I would like to log, for example, if anyone executes "apt-get install" or "apt-get purge", so I can keep track of manually installed packages.. • Problem with screen redrawing at DOS app in VmWare Player

  I have very old DOS Application (CadSoft Eagle - PCB Designer) and I want to work with it on my workstation with Windows 7. Then I install Windows 98 and that software into VmWare Player. But that software has serious problem with redrawing screen. It's very slow in comparison with my Intel Celeron 333MHz with Windows 98. I have same problem if I try to use DOSBox. I also trying run this application directly on Windows XP with compatibility mod set to "Windows 98", but I get "(0Dh): General Protection Fault". Can someone give me good advice how I solve that?

  Are there companies that sell new computers that support old ISA bus expansion cards? We have an aging computer running DOS that operates some machinery via an ISA interface board. Updated versions of this board (e.g. PCI, USB) are not available, and I am concerned about the long-term reliability of the 8+ year old computers we currently keep around as backups.   Some time ago I protected the Excel 2010 file from the path File Protect workbook Encrypt with password and gave it a password. Now that I removed that password via below method: Open the workbook and use Save As In the lower right of the file window will be "Tools" Choose "General Options" Clear the password. Save over your old file. the file is openable without wanting a password. But the problem is when I open it and close it immediately, even without moving the active cell, the message "Do you want to save the changes you made to 'test.lsx'?" appears. While there hasn't occurred any changes to that file so why I face this message any time I want to close the file? Hasn't the file been corrupted?

• Unix printing a banner page on every print job

  I have a Data General server on unix that is printing a banner page on every print. I originally thought that the banner page was comming from the printer. As this is an HP printer, I used telnet to get to the jetadmin and then proceded to disable the banner page, but this did not solve the issue. I then went into the sysadm program to see if the TCPIP printing was set to print a banner page on print jobs, but I did not see any options to print a banner page.   Hi, recently I've purchased a VPS package which runs Ubuntu 9.04. I'm going to be using it as a general purpose server with a web server, git server, etc. Now, the package is fairly cheap, but in exchange in there's little to no auxiliary functionality, including an absence of nameservers. So, given that I have a domain name and full root access to the VPS, is it possible to configure a nameserver on the VPS for the VPS? • How to partition a 1 TB drive for performance on a windows development machine?

  I saw a similar question for linux, but nothing for windows. I'm getting a new 1TB drive for my dev box @ work. The OS will be Windows 7 Pro with 8GB of RAM and just the single 1TB drive. Backups are not a concern, and I won't be storing large multimedia files. I want the fastest possible performance for general windows usage and for compilation. I will defrag nightly with a smart defragger liker perfectdisk. Should I just go with a single partition, or is there some way I can lay things out for the best performance?
