  How do I check if a LUN has been presented to my server? What are the Linux commands for that? Do the LUNs show up in a fdisk -l command like a normal /dev/sda gets listed? What are other commands associated with general SAN related checks in Linux? What is WWN and how does that have any relevance? If we have LUNs, what is the use of multipathing? Bit lengthy but I am not able to get a grasp on the topic. Any help would be appreciated.

  I'm new to VPS in particularly and to servers in general. But it turns out that I need to raise and maintain a VPS server. I've decided to register it at https://nodedeploy.com/ but I have lot's of questions, conducted with it. Does that site provide VPS hosting or it is just a web-site hosting? Will the payments for the VPS be done automatically, or I'll have to do them manually? How do I select a VPS OS that will be installed? How do I get the root password? Will it be available after payment? Is ssh access supported there? How can I cancel my account if something goes wrong with my project? What VPS-hosting service would you recommend for using? Maybe, the questions are really full and newbie, but It's really important for me to know that points. I'll be very grateful for any answers.

• What ports do I allow over my internal firewall interface?

  I have a Cisco ASA that I have VPN tunnels to connect my internal Windows network. I ran into some trouble logging into my domain so I unblocked all the ports on that internal interface. On a previous question posted here, the general consensus was that I should be blocking ports on my inside interface but my question is: what ports should I unblock? I've tried unblocking ports 88, 139, 135, 389, and 445 and Windows logins still give me problems. Is there some MS documentation somewhere that tells me what I need to unblock to allow Windows logins and other things?

• On OS X, how do I print (a web-page) directly into my Google Docs account?

  Is it possible to, from the OS X 10.6 print dialog, print the web-page directly into my Google Documents account? I can save as PDF and upload it, but, well, I want to cut out the middleman (ie, me; I make too many mistakes...). I tend to use Chrome to browse the web in case that's relevant. Are there Google Docs upload-helpers in general? I tried gdocuploaded (an Adobe AIR App) but it refused to so much as launch.

• Unable to mount Amazon Public Dataset using ec2-create-volume

  I am trying to use a Public Dataset with the snapshot id of snap-­e1608d88. I am looking at these instructions, but they do not seem to help. The first suggestion there says I should click on Volumes and create a new volume, set it's size and availability zone, as well as specifying the snapshot id. The problem is, snapshot id is a dropdown, not a text field, and there are over 100 options in the dropdown. Next I installed the ec2 command line tools and tried to run the ec2-create-volume command. For my first attempt I tried ec2-create-volume --snapshot snap-­e1608d88 --availability-zone us-east-1 but that gave output indicating I need to provide a certificate with the --cert switch. Which certficate exactly? I tried my SSH cert at ~/.ssh/id_rsa. No dice. I got the following Java error: "org.codehaus.xfire.fault.XFireFault: General security error;"

• Traffic shaping L2TP/IPsec VPN (via accounts not connection)

  I need to be able to control the amount of bandwidth a specific user account can use on a VPN connection. One account I want to be able to use the VPN with no restrictions and another account I want to limit to a reasonable amount of bandwidth (say 10GB or so a month). I'm aware that you can traffic shape individual connections but that does not quite solve the problem as the limited account can just disconnect and reconnect to get a new connection. I need to be able to limit bandwidth on a login basis for a given period of time (monthly limit). I'm really not that familiar with traffic shaping in general so any advice would be appreciated. • Could SQL Server 2008 replication be used with NLB to allow unlimited scaling of reporting servers?

  We are currently using transactional replication in SQL Server 2008 to keep a secondary reporting server synchronized with a primary database server. This has been working weel and keeps some of the load off the primary server. Would it be possible to scale this solution to multiple reporting servers? We're expecting an increased load of read-only queries and it would be nice to be able to add reporting servers as needed. The general idea was the following: Each reporting server would use a "pull" subscription to get the data from the primary database publication. These reporting databases could be a couple of minutes behind the primary server without it being an issue. The reporting servers would be NLB'd together. All read-only queries would be directed to the NLB which should spread the load across the servers.

• Does a hard drive "working hard", i.e. when defragmenting or otherwise continuously active, significantly affect a laptop's temperature?

  Trying to diagnose and fix an overheating Acer 5735 laptop, running speedfan and doing general workload to try and cause the overheat conditions. I notice that windows xp is badly fragmented according to defraggler, at 58% fragmentation. So I defrag whilst watching the speedfan window, which was at the start reporting high warning style symbols for all of the sensors. After the defrag, I rebooted and ran a few programs, and even defraggler again and the sensors in speedfan all reported green i.e. not high. Wondering if there is a correlation between windows fragmentation causing the hard drive to work harder and produce more heat inside the laptop? dont want to just assume that the problems are resolved, so either speedfan is not accurate enough or fragmentation can lead to additional hard drive heat? All comments or suggestions welcome.

  Ctrl-c doesn't always work to kill the current process (for instance, if that process is busy in certain network operations). In that case, you just see "^C" by your cursor, and can't do much else. What's the easiest way to force that process to die now without losing my terminal? Summary of answers below: Usually, you can Ctrl-z to put the process to sleep, and then do "kill -9 process-pid", where you find the process's pid with 'ps' and other tools. On Bash (and possibly other shells) you can do "kill -9 %1" (or '%N' in general) which is easier. If Ctrl-z doesn't work, you'll have to open another terminal and kill from there.

• Ubuntu 9.10 Dowload Speed Very Slow

  I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 desktop and I'm new to the Linux world, so bear with me. I'm on a corporate network of 3 T1s shared across 50-60 users. I typically get about 300 KB/sec for downloads, but for whatever reason, the Linux box will start out in that range, then drop to less than 1KB/Sec sometimes. Doesn't seen to matter where I'm downloading from. Right now I'm trying to get Eclipse for PHP and it's running at 3-6KB/sec. Getting the updates for the system will also drop to very slow rates. Our IT person has set up the machine to get the same 10.0.0.x address when it starts, and moved this IP to bypass our Proxy/Firewall going out, so that shouldn't be the issue. Can anyone recommend something I can try to better diagnose the problem. Again, I'm new to the Linux world and the hardware/OS setup side in general (coming form more of a coding background). • Less daunting front end for SQL Server

  We currently have a few users who have been using Access very succesfully to throw around large amounts of data. We've now got to the point where the data is just too large to be held in Access, as well as wanting to hold it in a single place where multiple users can access it. We have therefore moved the data over to SQL Server. I want to provide a general tool that they can use to view the data on the server and do some simple things like run queries and filters and export the data for offline manipulation. I don't want the support headaches that might come with rolling out SQL Management Studio, and neither do I want to have to create an Access database with links for each current database or ones that are created in the future. Can anyone recommend a simple tool that will connect to a server, list all the databases and allow a user to drill into a table and look at the data. Many thanks.

Since file systems are usually based on physical disks they have the tendency to use the whole area available1 in order to increase the speed2 or reliability3. I'm searching a filesystem that does the exact opposite : try to touch the minimum blocks need by an aggressive block reuse. I would happily trade some performance for space usage. • Outlook 2010 : "An error occurred when setting schedule permissions"

  Computer: Windows 7 x64 Enterprise. Office 2010 with Outlook 2010. Exchange account and a couple of IMAP accounts connected to the Outlook profile. Error: When attempting to share the calendar with anyone (selected from the address book) by click on "Calendar Permissions" seen here You can add or remove people without issue, except that no matter what, even if nothing is done, just opening the sharing window and closing it, you get an error message that says "An error occurred when setting schedule permissions" Verified that the issue doesnt actually effect the sharing, or the general setting of permissions. The error however is disconcerting to my user, and I would like to alleviate the problem if possible. Thanks!

  My client is RDP 6.1 (On Windows XP SP3) and Server is Windows Server 2003. I have installed an SSL certificate on server for RDP. In the RDP settings (General tab), the Encryption method is set to SSL/TLS 1.0 and Encryption level is set to "Client Compatible". I have following questions In this case is it guaranteed that all communication is encrypted even when I remote login to the server? I mean pwd is encrypted Does RDP always use some kind of encryption even if there is no SSL certificate installed on the server? In this case I do not see security lock in the connection bar. When I set encryption level to "High" then I see security lock. I do believe that communication is both cases will be encrypted. Is it true? Please reply to my questions Thanks in advance Kumar

• Keyboard shortcut / navigation references

  I use the mouse much too freely, and my wrists are not thanking me for it. I have been meaning to try and use the keyboard more as my sole means of navigating Windows, but I am having trouble sticking with it because when I need to do something and I cannot find the right shortcut, I grab the mouse and forget to let go of it again. Personally, the main software that I need keyboard reference sheets for would be: Firefox Thunderbird Visual Studio Windows itself But I would encourage more general inclusion of shortcut references in the answers in case anyone else tries to make the same transition I am attempting ;) What I am looking for is reference material that is as comprehensive as possible so that over time I can hopefully learn to do everything with the keyboard and spare my wrists. Bonus points for references that can be printed in a reasonable size so I can keep them next to my machine in hardcopy. I know there is an answer for Windows already: Is there a definitive reference for Windows shortcuts keys?, but I am leaving it in my question in case anyone has a better printable alternative.

• Copy only remaining rows after filter to new Excel Workbook

  I have an Excel file with an external data connection set up. It pulls data in directly from a database, and gives us about 450 rows. The header row allows us to filter the data in the sheet, and we use this as a general purpose tool... I will use the filters to narrow down what I'm looking at based on criteria that change depending on the circumstance. Often, after filtering the data, I want to send just the filtered records to another person. I'd like to copy/paste just the remaining rows into a new Workbook to send via e-mail. Unfortunately, this doesn't work. When I paste the data, it still pastes all the data. The filtered rows are still in the workbook... they're just hidden. I want them gone from the new file completely. How can I do this?

• What could be causing MsiInstaller to continuously reconfigure applications(EventID 1035)?

  I have a brand-new machine that we just installed Windows Server 2008 Enterprise on about two months ago. In the event log, I am seeing thousands of EventID 1035 logged. This is MsiInstaller reconfiguring about a dozen products over and over, looping about every half-hour. Has anyone seen this? As a beginning, I did a general web search, and most solutions revolved around Dell System Center or Google toolbar being installed as the culprit. We have neither of those products installed. • Is allowing remote Sql Server Management Studio safe?

  I administer a website that runs on IIS on one box, and SQL Server 2008 Workgroup on another box. typically I remote into the DB box and run SSMS to work on the db, but I would like to be able to access the db directly with SSMS on my local box. I've seen the other questions about allowing remote access to the database, but my question is, is this safe? I'm concerned that I'm opening a hole in the firewall and potential for hack attempts. Is this just a bad idea in general?

Common use is phone list of the employees phone numbers. Document repository. Just basically a web version of a file share for documents. • Can't execute java files on command prompts when they work perfectly in Eclipse IDE, what to do?

  I run the following code in Eclipse IDE: public class HelloWorld { public static void main(String[] args) { System.out.println("Hello World!" ) ; } } And it renders the expected output. When getting into the command prompt (DOS) already in the directory, I type this javac HelloWorld.java And then this java HelloWorld And the output reads Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: HelloWorld <wrong name:learning/HelloWorld> With a whole lot more errors, learning being the name of my general package. What's wrong? I have installed Eclipse x86 SDK 4.2.0 together bit with the latest JRE and JDK both in 64 bit as well.

• Windows Server R2 Task Scheduler - Open Programs On Startup

  I want Fiddler and some other programs to run on startup, so it's there and running every time I bring up an instance of my test server on EC2. There's a few questions about running scripts on Startup with Task Scheduler, but this needs to work slightly differently. I have set this up to run on startup but when I RDP into the server I can see Fiddler is running in Task Manager (so I can't manually run a second instance of the program), but it's not viewable on the task bar? So I can't actually see the interface? • Private Git repo using Smart HTTP with LDAP authentification

  I've been crawling the interwebz and getting my hands dirty for the last few days, but I can't seem to make it all work together. I managed to get a HTTP repo working with Ubuntu 10.04 over Smart HTTP (pull and push over HTTP) for a single repo. This means that I do the initial setup over SSH to the server (git init --bare) and after that the clients can pull and push to it (git clone http://servername/allgitrepos/repo.git). Unfortunately it's impossible to add a new repo without SSHing to the server and adding it manually) i.e. git push http://servername/allgitrepos/repo2.git (allgitrepos is available for everyone to read-write and execute) would fail talking about git update-server-info (which seems to be a general error message). So far the repository is anonymous, so I would like to authenticate using LDAP and also use the LDAP creds to make the git commit. So, how can I push new repos to the server and how can I use the LDAP creds to make the git commit. Thanks

• Does /boot safe on top of a lvm LV (logical volume)?

  Title already asked the question. More specifically, I read in some documents that logical volumes are nice in general but not for /boot in a linux system. They say that bootloaders don't understand LVM volumes, so create a separate partition for /boot out of lvm. I recently installed Ubuntu server (9.10) for my home server, but by default /boot is created in the LVM. Everything is fine now, but I am not sure it is safe to use /boot in LVM. Second question is do I really need a physical partition (volume)(pv) for /boot or is it equally fine if I put it into a logical volume (lv) on top of a single shared volume group.
