However, these applications are typically expensive or unreliable.  Plus, if you have a laptop or lack a secondary computer to put the hard drive into – how on earth do you wipe it quickly and easily while still conforming to a 7 pass rule (this means that every possible bit on the hard drive is set to 0 and then to 1 seven times in a row)?  Yes, one pass should be enough – as turning every bit from a 1 to a zero will wipe the data from existence.  But, we’re dealing with tinfoil hat wearing types here people.  DOD standards dictate at least 3 passes, and typically 7 is the preferred amount.  I’m not going to argue about data recovery.  I have been told to use 7 passes, and so I will.  So say we all! Quite some time ago I used to make a BartPE XP-based boot cd for the original purpose of securely wiping data.  I loved BartPE and integrated so many plugins into my builds that I could do pretty much anything directly from CD.  Reset passwords, uninstall security updates, wipe drives, chkdsk, remove spyware, install Windows, etc.  However, with the newer multi-core systems and new chipsets coming out from vendors, I found that BartPE was rather difficult to keep up to date.  I have since switched to WinPE 3.0 (Windows Preinstallation Environment). http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc748933(WS.10).aspx  It is fairly simple to create your own CD, and I have made a few helpful scripts to easily integrate drivers and rebuild the ISO file for you.  I’ll cover making your own boot CD utilizing WinPE 3.0 in a later post – I can talk about WinPE forever and need to collect my thoughts!!  My wife loves talking about WinPE almost as much as talking about Doctor Who.  Wait, did I say loves?  Hmmmm, I may have meant loathes. The topic at hand?  Right. Wiping a drive! I must have drunk too much coffee this morning.  I like to use a simple batch script that calls a combination of diskpart.exe from Microsoft® and Sdelete.exe created by our friend Mark Russinovich. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897443.aspx All of the following files are located within the same directory on my WinPE boot CD. Here are the contents of wipe_me.bat, script.txt and sdelete.reg. Wipe_me.bat:   @echo off echo. echo     I will completely wipe the local hard drives using echo     7 individual wipes. The data will NOT echo     be recoverable.  I will begin after you pause echo. echo Preparing to partition and format disk. Diskpart.exe /s "script.txt" REM I was annoyed by not having a completely automated script – and Sdelete wants you to accept the license agreement. So, I added a registry file to skip doing that. regedit /S sdelete.reg rem sdelete options selected are: -p (passes) -c (zero free space) -s (recurse through subdirectories, if any) -z (clean free space) [drive letter] sdelete.exe -p 7 -c -s -z c: echo. echo Pass seven complete. echo. echo Wiping complete. Pause exit script.txt: list disk select disk 0 clean create partition primary select partition 1 active format FS=NTFS LABEL="New Volume" QUICK assign letter=c exit *Notes: This script assumes one local hard drive – change the script as you see fit for your environment.  The clean command will overwrite the master boot record and any hidden sector information – so be careful!   sdelete.reg: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Sysinternals\SDelete] "EulaAccepted"=dword:00000001   With a combination of WinPE, sdelete.exe and your friendly neighborhood text editor you can begin wiping drives as quickly and easily as possible!  I hope this helps, I get asked this a lot in my line of work. The web page I'm trying to save is bit long and has many images (http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2012/10/hurricane_sandy_the_superstorm.html) I tried Google Chrome Screen Capture Extention and few other Chrome Screen Capture Plugins but all gave empty image as output. How to overcome this? Is there any other known Plugin (non Chrome is OK) to save large web page as an Image?

  • HFS+ hard drive being mounted as read only

    This is a recurring problem and occurs a few times a week. I have an external hard drive which is hfs+. Every couple of weeks, for no obviuous reason, when I mount it by pluggin it in to my Ubuntu 11.10, it is read only and I can't copy any files into it. I gksudo nautlius and change the ownership and it magically works in some time. But returns to the read only state soon in a few hours-days without any rhyme or reason. Right now my fstab doesn't have any entry for my hard drive. What gives? What in the world is going on with Linux/HFS+? This is frustrating. I can't reformat my hard drive because I have almost a terrabyte of data in it and no receptacle to hold it while I reformat it.

    It's my first time using Ubuntu and I have run into some problems. I have a 16GB USB Flash drive and 16GB SDHC Card. I would prefer to use the SD card but either will do just fine if it helps with the solution. I Have a 13" Macbook Pro with no hard drive deeming the machine useless without an OS. I thought I could substitute the hard drive for a 16GB SD card with an Ubuntu ISO on it. I would like to plug in my SD card into my Macbook Pro, boot the Ubuntu ISO and do simple things such as use the browser for internet. The Problem: Whenever I boot my Macbook pro with the SD card that has the Ubuntu ISO, it loads at the purple logo screen and does not function. How can I resolve this issue?

  • Uninstall ubuntu from external hard drive + remove bootloader from internal hd

    I have created a bootable usb stick with linuxlive and Ubuntu.I then tried to install ubuntu on my external harddrive. However I guess I wrongly picked the drive where the boot section is installed, it now is installed on my internal (C:) drive. When I open the bios bootsequence it says Ubuntu 2 times? As if the boot is installed twice? I'd like to uninstall Ubuntu from my external drive but most important: I don't want Grub to be start up on my PC. I tried booting in Windows 8 recovery mode and used the following commands: bootrec /fixmbr bootrec /fixboot However the ubuntu choices wont disappear? I then tried to add bootrec /scanos and bootrec /rebuildbcd to the commands but somehow this wont work either. Anyone got some ideas? Thank you in advance! Best regards, Bart

    I am having issues installing 12.10 on a laptop from bootable USB Drive 4GB FAT32. Also I changed order on BIOS to boot from USB. But only I see is the black screen with SYSLINUX 4.06 EDD 4.06-pre7 Copyright (C) 1994-2012 H. Peter Anvin et al _ I tried to install 12.10 into my older laptop using the same bootable USB drive just to be sure, and it's all works fine! I have also trying different USB drives, but results were the same. So it looks like there is nothing wrong with my bootable USB drives. Something is wrong with my laptop, but I can't figure out what exactly, because it's very new and Windows7 boots and runs just great. I Googled but found nothing useful. My laptop is really a small one: Acer AOD270 Protcessor: Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU N26OO 1.60 GHz RAM: 1 GB Windows 7 Starter 32 bit It has no CD drive Any help would be really appreciated please.

  • Using GParted to rescue data and format hard drive to NTFS

    I'm having problems booting to Windows XP due to bad sectors on the hard drive. I've tried fixboot and fixmbr from the recovery console. That only made matters worse. Now I want to use GParted to attempt data rescue and format the hard drive to NTFS. Unfortunately, I get an error (Picture 2) when trying to recover my files, and the option to format the hard drive is grayed out. The only thing I can do is create a new partition. When I click "view" I get the "Unable to open the default file manager" error

I have a docking station for the drive and it is connected to my linux machine. The drive appears in disk utility. Unfortunately, this is where I have no idea where to proceed.   • Not mounting/finding 1TB NTFS drive

    I am having trouble with Ubuntu recognizing/finding/mounting one of my hard drives. I dual boot Ubuntu and Windows 7. I had Ubuntu 10.04 and all drives showed up under "Places" I could click on any of my Windows/NTFS drives and they would mount as they should. I have since updated to Ubuntu 10.10. One of my drives no longer shows up in "Places" or in Nautilus. I can open gparted and it is listed there, but if I try to click the mount button, I get an error. I am currently at work and can not post any screenshots or errors, but will happily do so later. I was just hoping that someone might be able to give me something to try when I get home. 250gig SATA hard drive (Windows7/NTFS) - recognized/mountable 200gig PATA hard drive (Ubuntu 10.10) - recognized (obviously) 1TB SATA hard drive (NTFS) - not recognized/won't mount Thanks!

    I installed Ubuntu on my laptop which when I got it I had Fedora 13 installed on it as the OS. Now I want to install Fedora 18 in a dual boot with Ubuntu. Problem is when I installed Ubuntu, I didn't partition for dual boot and I gave the entire hard drive to Ubuntu and no longer have the space to dual boot. How can I lower the partition on Ubuntu to make space on the hard drive for Fedora? I want to split the hard drive 50/50 between the two. Thanks in advance.

    I am completely new to Linux, due to some problems in my Windows I decided to give Linux a try. I am quite liking it accept for some minor issues. The biggest of them is that I cannot find my DVD drive in Ubuntu. After I insert the disk, the drive's green light flickers and then nothing. I don't get anything on my unity bar or desktop. There is no folder inside my /dev folder which indicates a dvd drive. There is a cdrom folder in my root folder but nothing is there. If you guys know what's wrong, I'd appreciate the help. Am a complete newbie so don't expect me to know anything about Ubuntu, although I have spent lots of hours in last 2 days googling my issue so I have basic information...

  • How to backup a NAS drive to a USB drive?

    How would you backup 600+ GB of data on a NAS (Network-Attached Storage) drive to a USB external drive? The NAS drive does not contain mission critical data nonetheless I wish to make weekly copies of it just in case. The NAS drive is almost exclusively used as an archive dump and is rarely updated. However the backup strategy used must have a simple restore procedure so I can confidently say the data now on the NAS drive is exactly how it was at the time of backup. I did try xcopy but seemed like it would take many-many hours and eventually crashed with insufficient memory. http://www.ctunion.com/node/114 suggests I would need to use xxcopy instead due to folder/file name lengths. My concern with xcopy/xxcopy is the length of time it takes. Hoping something else is faster. NAS drive is DLink DNS-313. 1TB drive installed. Connected to router via Ethernet cable. USB drive is Seagate 1TB. Can be connected to Windows Vista (preferred) or Windows 7 PCs. Both PCs are usually connected Wirelessly however ethernet cable can be used during backup to speed up the process.

    How would you backup 600+ GB of data on a NAS (Network-Attached Storage) drive to a USB external drive? The NAS drive does not contain mission critical data nonetheless I wish to make weekly copies of it just in case. The NAS drive is almost exclusively used as an archive dump and is rarely updated. However the backup strategy used must have a simple restore procedure so I can confidently say the data now on the NAS drive is exactly how it was at the time of backup. I did try xcopy but seemed like it would take many-many hours and eventually crashed with insufficient memory. http://www.ctunion.com/node/114 suggests I would need to use xxcopy instead due to folder/file name lengths.
