• glsl demo suggestions ?

  In a lot of places I interviewed recently, I have been asked many a times if I have worked with shaders. Even though, I have read and understand the pipeline, the answer to that question has been no. Recently, one of the places asked me if I can send them a sample of 'something' that is "visually polished". So, I decided to take the plunge and wrote some simple shader in GLSL(with opengl).I now have a basic setup where I can use vbos with glsl shaders. I have a very short window left to send something to them and I was wondering if someone with experience, could suggest an idea that is interesting enough to grab someone's attention. Thanks

• The /usr/bin/x11 folder

  Why does the /usr/bin/x11 folder hold another x11 folder and when you open that === x11 you get another x11 and then another and another??? I did it about 6 times and got frustrated so I have no idea how deep this goes but What is the purpose (or is it a glich?)? Is this eating disk space more than it should? (I was going to delete one or more but thought I better ask first before I end up !fucked ) and finally Is it just me and I am going crazy maybe the pills are wearing off or maybe they are kicking in.. I am not sure but an answer would help. I can see no reason why this should be happening at all.

  Initial situation Often for Visual Studio projects the typical content of a .gitignore file contains this line bin or [B|b]in It is used to avoid that Git tries to track compile outputs as repository relevant data. Problem But keep in mind: this will also suppress bin folders of additional stuff like frameworks and toolsets. For instance Microsoft.SDKs contains a folder named Bin with a lot of programs Simian contains a folder named bin with the program themselves If you store such artifacts also in the repository - according to the principle of a “self containing project” – you could lost the content in the bin folder! Solution Till yet I don’t have a good idea. So I verify for each new added toolset or framework whether it has or has not such a bin folder. If it has, then I must add this bin folder manually to the repository so that Git track it.

  Recently, I had to create a program to send messages between two winforms executable. I used a tool with simple built-in functionalities to prevent having to figure out all the ins and outs of this vast quantity of protocols that exist. But now, I'm ready to learn more about the internals difference between each of theses protocols. I googled a couple of them but it would be greatly appreciate to have a good reference book that gives me a clean idea of how each protocol works and what are the pros and cons in a couple of context. Here is a list of nice protocols that I found: Shared memory TCP List item Named Pipe File Mapping Mailslots MSMQ (Microsoft Queue Solution) WCF I know that all of these protocols are not specific to a language, it would be nice if example could be in .net. • What's the difference between stateful and stateless?

  The books and documentation on the MVC just heap on using the Stateful and Stateless terms. To be honest, i am just unable to grab the idea of it, what the books are talking about. They don't give an example to understand any of the either state, rather than just telling that HTTP is stateless and with ASP.NET MVC microsoft is going along with it. Am I missing some fundamental knowledge, as i can't understand what is stateful and why is stateful and same goes for stateless. A simple and short example that talks about a control like button or textbox can be simplify the understanding i suppose.

• XNA Skinned Model - Keyframe.Bone out of range exception

  I'm getting an IndexOutOfRangeException on this line of AnimationPlayer.cs: boneTransforms[keyframe.Bone] = keyframe.Transform; I don't get what it's really referring to. The error happens when keyframe.Bone is 14, but I have no idea what that's supposed to mean. The 14th bone of my model? What would that even be? I read this thread, but nothing there seemed to work. I don't have many bones, stray edges/verts, unassigned verts, unparented/non-root bones, or bones with dots in the name. What else can I be missing? Thank you for any help!

• Cursor freezes for 5 secs every now and then

  I've installed Ubuntu 11.04 (64bit) on my new Thinkpad Edge 11 laptop from Lenovo with the following specs: Processor type AMD Athlon II Neo Processor Speed 1.8 GHz Memory Type DDR3 SDRAM RAM 2048 MB Hard Drive Type HDD Harddisk 250 GB Grafic processor ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6310 Ubuntu has found all my hardware and it works perfectly. I have one irritating problem though: From time to time (sometimes every minute, other times every hour)the cursor freezes for about 5 sec. This happens independently from the number of processes running on the laptop. It's only the cursor that freezes - I can still tab between windows and use the keyboard. I've installed GPointingDeviceSettings, activating the trackpoint, which btw works perfectly. Also I have installed the ATI Catalyst proprietary display driver. Anyone has an idea of whats wrong? But when I try something like $cclive <url> 2>&1 | zenity --progress But when I execute the command line but it not seems to work. Any idea of how I can do that ? • Right mix of planning and programing on a new project

  I am about to start a new project (a game, but thats unimportant). The basic idea is in my head but not all the details. I don't want to start programming without planning, but I am seriously fighting my urge to just do it. I want some planning before to prevent refactoring the whole app just because a new feature I could think of requires it. On the other hand, I don't want to plan multiple months (spare time) and start that because I have some fear that I will lose my motivation in this time. What I am looking for is a way of combining both without one dominating the other. Should I realize the project in the way of scrum? Should I creating user stories and then realize them? Should I work feature driven? (I have some experience in scrum and the classic "specification to code" way.)

• Do ASP.Net Web Forms actually produce ADA compliant HTML? Does the ASP/AJAX toolkit undermine the goal of ADA compliance?

  I'm trying to convince my employer to let us use the Microsoft ASP/AJAX toolkit since it simplifies the implementation of many controls. However they have rejected the idea on the grounds that it produces "AJAX code" which is not ADA compliant. However the same employer requires webpages to be written in ASP.NET Web Forms which, as far as I can tell from the source, is very very far from ADA compliance. I am new to both web programming and ADA compliance. My questions are: Do ASP.Net Web Forms actually produce ADA compliant HTML? Will the ASP/AJAX toolkit undermine the goal of ADA compliance?

I have received a SOAP developer's guide to the specific type of modem that helps out with the specific values that I need to pass into Iridium's WSDL but I cannot figure out how to do this from a webpage I have created using HTML/CSS, and PHP? I have been told by others that I need to know the portal. I have no idea what that means. I am a beginner programmer who has learned programming for this project.   Hi, I would like to create a share link to my website using javascript: script src="[url-to-my-script]" Basically the main idea behind this is to render HTML block with an image and link to the website. By using JavaScript approach I can control the look and feel of that link + potentially I could change the link html in the future without touching partner websites. The only potential problem I see with this approach is SEO. I'm not sure if google will be able to index that link to my website, since it's generated by javascript.

• Estimated budget for RockBand 3 character creator feature [closed]

  I want to get an idea of the budget required to make something akin to the Rock Band 3 character creator. We won't have the same level of detail for creating the base character, i.e. no face feature customization. We essentially want some very basic body sizing and want a bunch of clothing and accessories that the characters can try on. The clothing and accessories need to adapt and fit to the body types/shapes. The character should also support movement...and the clothes should move with the body. I've asked a similar question here regarding the development effort but not necessarily a budget. Do you think it's a $1M job? Most of the effort will go into creating the character models and the clothing models. The rest of the effort will go towards the user interface to navigate the customization features.

• The danger of changing the domain of your portfolio

  So I have a online portfolio that is available at mervin-ux-portfolio.com but I am planning to change hosts since the current host I am hosting it with is hitting me with a very high yearly renewal rate. When I was inquiring about domain transfers ,,they told me that since I had not initiated the domain transfer within 14 days of the expiry of the domain ,they cannot do it immediately and it would take about two weeks to to release the domain name. Since I dont like the idea of my site being down for like 2 weeks ,I was wondering if I should start afresh with a new domain on a new host and what were the potential dangers of that ( I have the entire site backup,so creating a replica of the site on the new host wont be hard) I also wont be losing any business or work since I work full time currently but I was just wondering about the challenges in terms of getting my domain name back to the top of search results and basically getting it out there assuming I go the new domain name approach. I know this is strictly not an UX question but I was hoping people could give some suggestions on what I should do

• Error running phusion passenger in standalone mode

  I'm trying to run standalone phusion passenger so that I can run different ruby rvm configurations on the same host. I already have ruby and passenger running fine on this host. I am following the instructions here. When I run standalone passenger the first time, it appears to successfully install nginx. • Besides macros, are there any other metaprogramming techniques?

  I'm making a programming language, and, having spent some time in Lisp/Scheme, I feel that my language should be malleable. Should I use macros, or is there something else I might/should use? Is malleable syntax even a good idea? Is it perhaps too powerful a concept? EDIT: In doing some research, I found fexprs. I don't really understand what these are. Help with that in an answer too please. EDIT2: Is it possible to have a language with macros/something-of-a-similar-nature without having s-expressions?

• Script / App to unRAR files, and only delete the archives which were sucessfully expanded.

  I have a cron job which runs a script to unrar all files in a certain directory (/rared for argument's sake) and place the expanded files in /unrared. I would like to change this script so that it deletes the original rar archives from /rared only if they successfully extracted. This does not mean that unrar has reported that they have been fully extracted, because I have had data corruption during decompression before. Ideally (pie-in-the-sky, just to give you an idea of what I'm shooting for,) the unrar program would include this functionality, comparing an expected md5sum value with the actual md5sum value and only deleting the archive if they match. I don't mind scripting this entire process if I have to, but there must be a better way than unraring twice and comparing md5sums.

  For my game, I need EaseFunction in LoopEntityModifier. In my game, I am rotating ball over certain object. For giving effect I want to use EaseFunction. I want to rotate ball around an object take around 4 to 5 round that was already rotating but I want add some effect so that it looks good. For this I have to use EaseFunction which suits my needs. But if I put EaseFunction in rotation modifier then each round rotation modifier apply an effect of EaseFunction that I want only one time occur either starting or ending time. So if I can able to provide EaseFunction in LoopEntityModifier then it will good for me or something similar also work for me. At present my code is something similar like this. new LoopEntityModifier(new RotationModifier(...)); I hope someone has some idea on this.

• 2D management game [on hold]

  Very newbie question but I have a game idea in mind. It will be 2d and data centric, like football manager. However I am struggling to find a platform that would suit. I am an experienced line of business developer so am happy to write code, but I would like a platform that does some of the leg work for me so was avoiding OpenGL. I would also like to be able deploy to iOS, android, windows and OS X. What are the options? To be more clear, the game is not a normal platform or shooter type game, so game maker is likely to be way too basic and unity seems a little over the top (though I am not sure if the GUI options would fit?). The majority of the game is more like business screens just displaying data and having buttons to click. Are there options for this type of game (May help to look at football manager)?

• How to reduce errors in dynamic language such as python, and improve my code quality

  I post the origin question in stackoverflow, some people suggest me to post here I've always have trouble with dynamic language like Python. Several problems: Typo error, I can use pylint to reduce some of these errors. But there's still some errors that pylint can not figure out. Object type error, I often forgot what type of the parameter is, int? str? some object? Also, forgot the type of some object in my code. Unit test might help me sometimes, but I'm not always have enough time to do UT. When I need a script to do a small job, the line of code are 100 - 200 lines, not big, but I don't have time to do the unit test, because I need to use the script as soon as possible. So, many errors appear. So, any idea on how to reduce the number of these problems?

• CW/CCW Rotation of a Vector

  Considering that I have a vector A, and after an arbitrary rotation I get vector B. I want to use this rotation operation in others vectors as well, but I'm having problems in doing that. My idea do that is to calculate the perpendicular vector C of the plane AB (by calculating AxB). This vector C is the axis that I'll need to rotate. To discover the angle I used the dot product between A and B, the acos of the dot product will return the lowest angle between A and B, the angle ang. The rotation I need to do is then: -rotate *ang*º around the C axis. The problem is that I dont know if this rotation is a CW or CCW rotation, since the cos of the dot product does not give me information of the sign of the angle. There's a tip discover that in 2D ( A.x * B.y - A.y * B.x) that you can use to discover if the vector A is at left/right of vector B. But I dont know how to do this in 3D space. Can anyone help me?
