• What are cons of usage only non-member functions and POD?

  I'm creating my own game engine. I've read these articles and this question about DOD and there was written to not use member functions and classes. I also heard some criticism to this idea. I can write it using member functions or non-member functions it would be similar. So what are benefits/cons of that approach or when project grows, does any of these approaches give clearer and better manageable code? With POD & non-member functions I don't have to make struct members public I can still use object id outside of engine like OpenGL does with all it's stuff, so It's not about encapsulation. POD - plain old data DOD - data oriented design

• .bash_history and .cache

  I have a user who's home directory is a Mercurial repository. Mercurial notified me that there were 2 new unversioned files in my repository. .bash_history and .cache/motd.legal-displayed. I assume bash_history is the history of bash commands for my user. I have no idea what the other is. I don't want these files to be versioned by Mercurial, are they safe to just delete, or will they come back, or mess something up? Can they be moved to somewhere else? Or do I have to add them to my .hgignore file?

• Cannot login via Unity login screen after upgrade to 12.04

  Logging in via the shell accessed through Ctrl+Alt-F1 and logging in as guest via the graphical user interface work 0O When I try to log into my standard user account via the graphical interface, the screen flashes to black for a couple of seconds and bumps me back to a pristine login screen. Entering a wrong password for my user account yields the standard error message - my user account and credential verification seem to be OK. I suppose that my individual graphics configuration causes problems ... I'm not sure how to reset that. I've tried stopping the UI via sudo service lightdm stop executed sudo nvidia-xconfig and restarted the UI sudo service lightdm start to no avail. My workstation has a Nvidia GeForce 560-448 graphics card. I've tried getting this fixed with the latest Nvidia 64-bit drivers (cURL'ed from the official website), that is 295.49 and the latest beta driver 302.07. Anybody have an idea how to get this fixed? Your help is appreciated :)

• Is YQL still used?

  A few years ago, following the explosion of custom web APIs from various services around the world, Yahoo! launched the YQL service, which allows to query data from a variety of different providers with a unified Yahoo Query Language. Having worked with the APIs of Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Google Maps, YouTube and more, I very much enjoy the idea. However, I do not see it mentioned often, and of course this is one of those efforts that makes sense when enough people follow it and expose their API through this layer. Are there some statitics of usage? Or some declarations from Yahoo about the destiny of YQL? I would also be interested in hearing your experience if you have tried it directly.

• Methods of ordering function definitions in code

  When I work on some programming project (usually command line application in Python with many switches), I'm usually creating about 30 and more functions. Most of the functions are in one file (except some helpers that I utilize in more projects). Some of the functions are called on particular switch (like -p or --print) but many functions do some helper computations, print operations or database operations because I don't want to main functions be too large. When I have an idea for a new functionality I often put new functions randomly to the file. Should I think more about it and place it to some particular place? Are there some methods for this?

• Adding unit tests to a legacy, plain C project

  The title says it all. My company is reusing a legacy firmware project for a microcontroller device, written completely in plain C. There are parts which are obviously wrong and need changing, and coming from a C#/TDD background I don't like the idea of randomly refactoring stuff with no tests to assure us that functionality remains unchanged. Also, I've seen that hard to find bugs were introduced in many occasions through slightest changes (which is something which I believe would be fixed if regression testing was used). A lot of care needs to be taken to avoid these mistakes: it's hard to track a bunch of globals around the code. To summarize: How do you add unit tests to existing tightly coupled code before refactoring? What tools do you recommend? (less important, but still nice to know) I am not directly involved in writing this code (my responsibility is an app which will interact with the device in various ways), but it would be bad if good programming principles were left behind if there was a chance they could be used.

• Just being hired as a senior developer, never even been a junior developer, what should I expect?

  I've been a freelancer and a coder by night for a while, and recently, I've been hired after several levels of interviews in a nice NY company, even though I've some lacks in specific fields. Is this common for companies to hire seniors with less experience? Will they wait some weeks to respect a certain learning curve? I don't know anything about working in a company, so that's why I worry. After one week, I'm still checking and exploring sources, but after one week of work, it seems that some coworkers are considering that I'm slow. I'm good in maths, physics, algorithms, but still I need to learn about all the templates used in this company. Anyone here already received a less-experienced senior member in his team? Is this acceptable? I'm planing on having a meeting with my boss to stop worrying about that. Sounds like a good idea?

• Authenticating users for a website

  I'm working on a website and I want to validate that an individual is an employee at one of a large number of companies (probably using their company's email address, which I don't know before hand). The idea being some users are the general public and others are from these companies. And I need some way to authenticate that the users claiming to be employees are being honest while still having a friendly enough UI. I did an informal survey of people I know and the domains and emails will match in a majority of cases but they might not always match exactly so you might have a company with a website foo.com and an email [email protected] (although foobar.com did redirect back to foo.com). And while I can easily check that I'm not sure what other variations might be out there (maybe fooLA.com and email [email protected], etc.)

• Jump into Android or learn Java basics first?

  I am quite proficient in C and know some C++, but never touched Java. Recently I got an idea for an app which I think has potential, and I want to develop it. I am planning to go Android first, cause it doesn't require a mac/iPhone. So my question is: can I go straight to learning Android development, picking up the Java syntax as I go along and need it (after all I don't think it's much different from C/C++), or should I take a couple of weeks to learn the basics of Java first and then start with Android development?

• Choice of Input / music / graphics libraries for an indie game - what factors should I consider?

  I was wondering which tools (grapics-sound-input libraries, game engine libraries) that the following indie games used: Braid Superbrothers: S&S Super Meat Boy Limbo Fez (I know this one is XNA) Also, what is in common use in production games? My guess for game development in C++ is: -DirectX is most common for  Windows games -SDL or SDL+OpenGL is most common for  Linux games -OpenGL + Apple APIs are most common for OSX development What do most indie game projects use? If I wanted to casually build my own game for fun in C++ with the idea of possibly releasing it to Steam or something someday, is there anything I should be concerned about if I make it with DirectX for music/sound/input and build my own game engine? • Can't activate "mirror display"

  I have Ubuntu 12.04 on a Dell latitude E6410, I have a problem when using the VGA output I always have dual monitor and can't switch on the "mirror display" toggle under systems setting/displays. It's rather annoying when having to do presentation with a video projector. the option "mirror display" is in light grey and I can"t tick the box. • Is there animation software available for Ubuntu?

  Is there commercial-grade computer animation software available for Ubuntu, similar to the professional software sold for the Windows operating system? This question goes out to those of you who may be using such software professionally. My daughter recently graduated from the Art Institute of Seattle, and needs to put together an animation portfolio in order to interest employers in the field. As you know, such software is usually provided by the employer and the costs are high - several thousand dollars. I suggested that she investigate Ubuntu as a possible way to acquire the tools she needs. But, since I have no idea what might be available, either as open source or proprietary animation software, I am reaching out to the Ubuntu community for help in the hope someone who is using such software can help her. • Which specific practices could be called "software craftsmanship" rather than "software engineering"?

  Although not a new idea there seems to have been a big increase in the interest in software craftsmanship over the last couple of years (notably the often recommended book Clean Code's full title is Clean Code: A Handbook of Agile Software Craftsmanship). Personally I see software craftsmanship as good software engineering with an added interest in ensuring that the end result is a joy to work with (both as an end user and as someone maintaining that software) - and also that its focus is more at the coding level of things than the higher level process things. To draw an analogy - there were lots of buildings constructed in the 50s and 60s in a very modern style which took very little account of the people who would be living in them or how those buildings would age over time. Many of those buildings rapidly developed into slums or have been demolished long before their expected lifespans. I'm sure most developers with a few years under their belts will have experienced similar codebases. What are the specific things that a software craftsman might do that a software engineer (possibly a bad one) might not?

• Ubuntu 12.04 boot freezes

  I installed win7 on one of my machines. It works without any problem. Now I can not install Ubuntu 12.04 (11.10, 11.04) because the installation process stops in a very early stage: I can see that ISOLinux was loaded, then I can see some very simple icons, then I can see text messages of the kernel. The last message I can see: [6.177983] sr 5:0:0:0: attached scsi general ss1 type 5 At that point the system stops. I tried different versions (11.04) , I disabled, and then disconnected the hdd, but the same problem occured independently from my actions. I can boot a gparted live cd, but that system can not see my hdd. On the other hand, I can boot the installation cd of the latest stable Debian distribution without any problem, but I would prefer to use Ubuntu, because I use that distribution on all of our machines.s Configuration: Asus P8H61-MLE motheboard, Gigabyte GTS 450, Intel i5, 4gb ram, wd 1T sata hdd Any idea? • remastersys created Live DVD hangs in "Choose a picture"

  I used remastersys to create a Live DVD. Then, I used the Live DVD for the installation on another computer. The installation hung at the "Choose a picture" session. Both the "Back" and "Continue" buttons were disabled. It seemed like the installation was hung. I had to power-cycle the computer and reinstall from the Live DVD again. After the power-cycle, the installation from the Live DVD went successfully. Any idea why the installation hung at the "Choose a picture" session, and how to fix it without power-cycle the computer? • google webmaster showing 6 pages submitted 0 indexed, yet i can see them all there when i search in google?

  I have a small 'brochure' type site with 6 pages, i can see them all the pages showing up in google when i search for my site. But in webmaster tools under the sitemaps section it says 6 submitted, (the blue bar of the graph), but the indexed pages - the red bar is showing 0 indexed pages, even though they seem to be indexed ? any idea why this is ? I dont really think its that important as the pages are still indexed, but it just seems odd. =================================================== UPDATE 9/3/12 having just looked in google webmaster its showing that there are 11 pages indexed, under the health index status tab.. but under the optimization sitemap tab it shows 6 urls submitted but only 1 indexed ? please see images bellow index status: Sitemap status:

• Creating my own kill cam

  I plan on creating my own kill cam system for a sandbox tool set. After thinking about the mechanics of the kill cam itself, however, I'm quite lost. I'm trying to recreate the ones commonly seen in call of duty games that show, from the view of the killer, the actual killing scene. My Thoughts: -I can't just keep in memory when people kill others because I wouldn't know when to start the 'recording process'. There is on way for me to accurately determine when somebody is 'about' to kill someone. -My only real idea so far is to have a complete duplicate of everything loaded off to the side copying all the movement from the original world but with a 10 second delay. That way, all the kill cams would be 10 seconds long and the persons camera would just be moved to the second world of their killer. My Questions: Is there already an accepted way to do this? Does anybody have any good ideas for something like this? Thanks if you can!

  I'd like to create a web wizard or a wizard on/within a website. I know there are several java frameworks for wizards but there is none for the web in particular. If I search for a framework, I always get wizards to create a website, applet, servlet and what not. But never how to create such a wizard itself. So the question(s) is: What framework should I use to create a web wizard? And what frameworks are there? The wizard will be the visualisation for a BPEL Process deployment on a apache ode. I thought a webapp would be an easy way because the apache is running anyway. I'm not bound to that, perhaps someone has a better idea.

• Lenovo Thinkpad R500 having problems resuming

  Yesterday I installed Ubuntu 11.04 from scratch on my Thinkpad R500, leaving the default power management settings. Yesterday I closed the lid, and this morning when I opened it the laptop resumed correctly. Today during lunch the laptop went to sleep without me closing the lid, and there was no way to wake it up by typing ESC or moving the mouse or TrackPoint. No disk activity at all. When I briefly pushed the POWER button, the laptop rebooted completely, losing my opened applications. Is it a known problem with Natty/Lenovo Thinkpad R500/ATI? Any idea what could fix the problem?

• Ubuntu 10.10 USB drive not showing

  USB is detecting but not showing the drives or mount details. Nothing there inside my /media folder and /mnt folder. I already enabled automatic mount and give privilege to user also. • How can I run samba?

  I have server running Ubuntu 10.10. Never used samba before, as I never had windows machines, but now I need it. So I did: apt-get install samba smbfs smbclient. Packages are installed, but I have no idea how to configure it. All howtos I found on the net relate to /etc/samba/something.conf, where I don't even have /etc/samba directory. The only config I found is /etc/default/samba, which contains (aside from comments) only: RUN_MODE="daemons" All I want is to be able to have access to some directories on the Ubuntu machine from Windows, nothing else.

• How can you become a real programming polyglot?

  I work as a Java programmer, but C and C++ were always my favourite languages during studies. Unfortunatelly I don't have an opportunity to work with them as often as I would like to. As a result I sometimes get realized that I don't remember something quite important (today example: inherited protected members cannot be accessed in derived class constructors). The other example could be Python and Haskell which I enjoy using but don't use everyday. I got an idea to write my own wiki with easy to forget things (e.g. bash tricks & tips) but I find no sense in writing there everything I can forget about coolest programming languages. I know that the best way would be having a side projects (I want to start working on some C/C++ open source project after graduation), but currently I have to write my graduation thesis and work so I merely don't have time to do this. How do you stay sharp in languages that you don't use everyday?

• How should I organise classes for a space simulator?

  I have pretty much taught myself everything I know about programming, so while I know how to teach myself (books, internet and reading API's), I'm finding that there hasn't been a whole lot in the way of good programming. I am finishing up learning the basics of XNA and I want to create a space simulator to test my knowledge. This isn't a full scale simulator, but just something that covers everything I learned. It's also going to be modular so I can build on it, after I get the basics down. One of the early features I want to implement is AI. And I want to take this into account as I'm designing my classes so I can minimize rewriting code. So my question: How should I design ship classes so that both the player and AI can use them? The only idea I have so far is: Create a ship class that contains stats, models, textures, collision data etc. The player and AI would then have the data for position, rotation, health, etc and would base their status off of the ship stats.

• How do I improve my ability to manipulate code quickly, not wpm?

  I have seen several questions on here about touch typing and words per minute but not about improving ones ability to manipulate text using keyboard shortcuts, bindings etc. I have tried putting a cheat sheet of keyboard shortcuts next to my monitor but I can never incorporate them in my 'flow'. I have also tried the 'just use vi and don't touch the mouse' method but that only helps me with navigating code and not editing. I would prefer to use some application (or game) to learn text manipulation. But it looks like nothing like that exists (app idea?). I'm open to other suggestions too.
