• Installed SQL Server 2008 and now TFS is broken.

  Hi, My W2K3 server was running TFS 2008 SP1, SQL Server 2005 Development edition. I installed SQL Server 2008 Standard. I installed it while leaving SQL Server 2005 alone. Upgrading was not possible due to the differences in editions of the SQL Servers. Now TFS is broken. On a client computer, if I go Team - Connect to Team Foundation Server, I get this error: Team Foundation services are not available from server myserver. Technical information (for administrator): TF30059: Fatal error while initializing web service. So I head on over to my event viewer on the server. Under Application, I see one warning and two errors. • iPhone - Outlook 2010 sync'd items

  I'm not sure if this is a problem with Outlook 2010, or the fact that I don't have an Exchange box, or the fact that I have two MAPI mailboxes (both using Outlook Live Connector), or something else... so let me just describe the situation. iTunes says that I'm sync'ing happily, all the Calendar, Contact items, Notes... and if I have changed several things I get the "you're changing more than 5% of items" warning, persuading me that the sync'ing is working. I just can't find those items on my PC. They're not sync'ing with either of my Live accounts (Calendar or Contacts), and I can't find any track of anything. iTunes says I have Calendar folders called "" and "Calendar", but doesn't show any Contact groups at all. So how do I find out where they're going to... or change where they're going to... or anything?

• Can't delete some directories as Admin

  I am unable to delete the following directory in Windows 7 C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\iTunes The error message that is displayed when I try is: "You need permission to perform this action. You require permission from the computer's administrator to make changes to this folder." I am an Administrator and have UAC set to "Never Notify". iTunes is not running either (it's been uninstalled). I have tried running cmd.exe using "Run as administrator" from the right click context menu, then executing rmdir "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs" but it just returns "Access is denied." Any ideas why I can't delete this dir? Thanks!

• Using a redirect of any form to remove a query string with Apache

  Because of the silly way iTunes works the only way to update the URL for a feed is by setting up a permanent redirect from the old feed to the new. This seems easy, but I've hit a snag. The old URL ended in /?feed=rss2, the new URL is just a file, so it ends in podcast.xml. When I redirected from the old URL to the new, iTunes picked up the new URL BUT, WITH the query string, so now the URL ends in podcast.xml?feed=rss2. This is allowing listers to download the show - which is good, but causing some other problems. Is there any possible way to set up a permanent redirect that will redired podcast.xml?feed=rss2 to just podcast.xml? Mod_Rewrite seems to just pass through query strings, so I'm at a loss! Bart.

For the most part this arrangement works very well; however, I occasionally run into an issue where I'll resize an app on the external, causing it to be too large to fit on the built-in screen when I disconnect. Most apps don't have a problem decreasing their height automatically or resizing to fit when I click the green orb, but some (like iTunes) don't want to cooperate.   I have recently bought a Netgear WNDR3800 router to use it in my home network. But just the same day I installed it, I noticed a strange behaviour of Finder and iTunes. Let me explain it further. There is a Synology DS111 NAS attached to that router and two Macs with Mac OS X Lion. One of them is connected by a cable and the second one wirelessly. Before I changed my router to the new one I mentioned above, Finder always used to display my NAS on its sidebar. So I could just click its network name to access shared folders existing on it. But after I installed WNDR3800, I can no longer access the NAS that way. It is no longer displayed. I always have to mount it manually by typing its IP address using the Finder's 'connect to server' option. The same NAS supports TimeMachine backups and has an inbuilt DLNA server. And the same situation here. I can't perform a backup because my NAS is no longer accessible in TimeMachine preferences. iTunes does not display it as well (as a multimedia server) even though it used to before I installed that router. What's important, everything works fine for a couple of minutes after I restart the router or the NAS. Or even when I change the NAS's IP address it becomes accessible again in Finder, TimeMachine and iTunes, but only for some time. Both the Mac computers I mentioned behave the same way. And all those issues have been taking place sice I installed that new router. Before I did that, everything had worked fine. My old router was Netgear WGR614v10. Would you be so kind to tell me what you think could possibly be the reason of that behaviour? What settings of the router should I look closer at? I'm not a network specialist, but is it possible that some network packets are blocked for some reason? I will be grateful for any clues you give me. Thank you.

• How to prevent these executables from starting up?

  After removing the following executables from starting up, in the near future they reappear again: DDMService.exe: Re-enabled when visiting a DivX video online. DivXUpdate.exe: Re-enabled when visiting a DivX video online. GoogleUpdate.exe: Re-enabled task, I think by Google Chrome? I see no auto-update option. iPodService.exe: Re-enables after starting iTunes. iTunesHelper.exe: Re-enables after starting iTunes, useless on SSDs. Reader_sl.exe: Re-enables when updating Adobe Reader, useless on SSDs. It bores me that these processes keep popping back up, while my software functions well without them. I'm smart enough to update the software weekly through FileHippo so I don't need automatic updates. What can I do to never see these processes again? Even after reinstallation of those applications... A general solution is also welcome! :-)

• QuickTimeInstaller causing me buckets of issues

  Today I saw this message: After it installed and I rebooted, I was getting the Blue Screen of Death every few clicks. So...to resolve, I restored to a Restore Point when all was working, 2 days ago. Then, QuickTime reappeared and tried to reinstall itself. Is this iTunes related? or might it be related to Windows Live Messenger? Any suggestions on how to stop this auto installation? Update: Rolling back to a previous Restore Point temporarily fixed the issue but the patch was automatically applied a second time. Then, I made the horrible mistake of uninstalling iTunes and this caused my previous old restore point to be wiped away because of a limited amount of space that I alloted to the Windows Restore functionality. I fear that I will be faced with many issues ahead... Please help

• How can I continue audio playback even after switching user?

  I just tested it with iTunes; after switching the user account (only after logging into another account, to be precise) the audio playback from the account "A" stops. However iTunes continues playing in the background; which I realized after switching back to account "A". Very frustrating because it kind-of is a deal-breaker for me; the other person should be able to have some personalized settings; while it is still my computer, and the main account has all the music obviously. The ideal solution would be audio output continuing running while user still has the ability to manually pause it... EDIT: I tested a bit more: "Desktop" apps like VLC don't output sound but continue running; the stock Music.app in Metro pauses the music and continues playing when switching back.

• Tip on Reusing Classes in Different .NET Project Types

  All of us have class libraries that we developed for use in our projects. When you create a .NET Class Library project with many classes, you can use that DLL in ASP.NET, Windows Forms and WPF applications. However, for Silverlight and Windows Phone, these .NET Class Libraries cannot be used. The reason is Silverlight and Windows Phone both use a scaled down version of .NET and thus do not have access to the full .NET framework class library. However, there are many classes and functionality that will work in the full .NET and in the scaled down versions that Silverlight and Windows Phone use.Let’s take an example of a class that you might want to use in all of the above mentioned projects. The code listing shown below might be something that you have in a Windows Form or an ASP.NET application. public class StringCommon{  public static bool IsAllLowerCase(string value)  {    return new Regex(@"^([^A-Z])+$").IsMatch(value);  }   public static bool IsAllUpperCase(string value)  {    return new Regex(@"^([^a-z])+$").IsMatch(value);  }} The StringCommon class is very simple with just two methods, but you know that the System.Text.RegularExpressions namespace is available in Silverlight and Windows Phone. Thus, you know that you may reuse this class in your Silverlight and Windows Phone projects. Here is the problem: if you create a Silverlight Class Library project and you right-click on that project in Solution Explorer and choose Add | Add Existing Item… from the menu, the class file StringCommon.cs will be copied from the original location and placed into the Silverlight Class Library project. You now have two files with the same code. If you want to change the code you will now need to change it in two places! This is a maintenance nightmare that you have just created. If you then add this to a Windows Phone Class Library project, you now have three places you need to modify the code! Add As LinkInstead of creating three separate copies of the same class file, you want to leave the original class file in its original location and just create a link to that file from the Silverlight and Windows Phone class libraries. Visual Studio will allow you to do this, but you need to do one additional step in the Add Existing Item dialog (see Figure 1). You will still right mouse click on the project and choose Add | Add Existing Item… from the menu. You will still highlight the file you want to add to your project, but DO NOT click on the Add button. Instead click on the drop down portion of the Add button and choose the “Add As Link” menu item. This will now create a link to the file on disk and will not copy the file into your new project. Figure 1: Add as Link will create a link, not copy the file over. When this linked file is added to your project, there will be a different icon next to that file in the Solution Explorer window. This icon signifies that this is a link to a file in another folder on your hard drive.   Figure 2: The Linked file will have a different icon to show it is a link. Of course, if you have code that will not work in Silverlight or Windows Phone -- because the code has dependencies on features of .NET that are not supported on those platforms – you  can always wrap conditional compilation code around the offending code so it will be removed when compiled in those class libraries. SummaryIn this short blog entry you learned how to reuse one of your class libraries from ASP.NET, Windows Forms or WPF applications in your Silverlight or Windows Phone class libraries. You can do this without creating a maintenance nightmare by using the “Add a Link” feature of the Add Existing Item dialog.
