• How do you manage perl modules on a Debian system?

  I'd like to know if you have a method for managing perl modules on your Debian system, with respect to the following: Installing new modules Listing of manually installed modules Checking dependencies, and uninstalling modules I have looked at this perlmonks article for background reading: What is the best way to install CPAN modules on Debian? I have previously installed perl modules using the CPAN module. I have also used dh-make-perl in some cases, when following instructions to build other packages that had perl dependencies. I'd like to institute a coherent policy on my machine so I can better manage how and where the modules are installed, and reduce the chance of breaking perl on my system. I would strongly like a system where I can detect and uninstall modules that are no longer being used.

• SQL Server transaction log backups,

  Hi there, I have a question regarding the transaction log backups in sql server 2008. I am currently taking full backups once a week (Sunday) and transaction log backups daily. I put full backup in folder1 on Sunday and then on Monday I also put the 1st transaction log backup in the same folder. On tuesday, before I take the 2nd transaction log backup I move the first transaction log backup from folder1 an put it into folder2 and then I take the 2nd transaction log backup and put it in the folder1. Same thing on Wed, Thurs and so on. Basicaly in folder1 I always have the latest full backup and the latest transaction log backup while the other transaction log backups are in folder2. My questions is, when sql server is about to take, lets say 4th (Thursday) transaction log backup, does it look for the previous transac log backups (1st, 2nd, and 3rd) so that this new backup will only include the transactions from the last backup or it has some other way of knowing whether there are other transac log backups. Basically, I am asking this because all my transaction log backups seem to be about the same size and I thought that their size will depend on the amount of transactions since the last transaction log backup. Can anyone please explain if my assumptions are right? Thanks...

• Converting mp3 to ogg, suggestive?

  I'm thinking about converting my mp3 based music library to ogg, due to ogg being a free and open standard format (I guess there are other reasons too). As far as I know there's a chance of losing some sound quality when converting mp3 to ogg and vice versa (?). Would you suggest converting mp3 to ogg, or is it such a bad idea that I'd have to rip all CDs to ogg instead of converting? (if this would turn up I'd rip to flac anyway I guess). How would I be able to convert mp3 to ogg the easiest way, copying ID3-Tags too? (on a *nix-based environment) Best regards!

• Prevent Focus-Stealing from any PopUp Window

  Hi there, i have a really annoying behavior on my Windows XP System. Any PopUp Windows (e.g. asking me for my network signin) automatically steal the focus and i end up typing half of my last line of code into the username-field of the message box. Since i have no chance to prevent the message boxes themselve, i really would like to prevent the focus change! I searched the web and here too, but the only valid answers use TweakUI and some registry entries. None of them work. I guess, its because they prevent focus stealing from another application and not from within the active application itself. Anyone out there who knows a solution to this? Thanks anyway ;) Flo

• ADO 2.8, VMWare and SQL Server - sudden bulk dropped connections

  We have an overworked server currently running a single SQL Server 2000 instance on physical hardware, and about 40 different apps interact with it on a daily basis. Last year, the RAID controller failed and we had no spare, so IT Support hurriedly migrated it overnight to a copy running on a VMWare Server. While it was on that server everything ran much quicker due to it being a big improvement in spec. However, the biggest app using it had occasional serious errors which never occurred on physical hardware. Specifically, several times a week it would disconnect batches of users - anywhere from just ten to hundreds at once, and all at the same time. It didn't affect any particular users or PCs or offices - all were affected equally. The only common thing was the app, which is a VB6 app using ADO 2.8 to connect. The other apps connecting to that virtualised instance of SQL Server seemingly had no problems, although they were (and are) responsible for only a tiny fraction of the work involving this server. The upshot is that after about two weeks of loving the speed and hating the random mass disconnections (which we were never able to find a cause for), we sadly took the decision to return to physical hardware and the disconnections vanished. Now we've reached the point where the old server just can't handle all that's being asked of it, and we're intending to migrate everything to 2 or more other servers. The snag is that there's a good chance they'll have to be virtual ones again. Given what happened last time, I'm trying to find out what possible reasons there could be for these mass disconnections. We were running VMWare ESX, but the network is Novell-based. Also, the server had a linked server setup to connect to an Informix server using a known-to-be-buggy ODBC driver, and this is used throughout the day. Any ideas on the cause(s)?

• Is proprietary vendor software required to use a wireless printer?

  On Windows Vista, other than the driver, one can use a regular printer w/o any extra software, either plugged in via USB or over the network. I don't have to install extra software from the printer vendor to use the basic printer functionality. Is the same true for wireless printers? I need to install the HP 6000 wireless printer, and I hate installing vendor software other than the required drivers. So I'm wondering whether I need to install HP software on every PC that wants to use this printer? I haven't had a chance to read the manual but I'm hoping I don't have to. Can folks that have experience with wireless printers comment on whether vendor software, other than the printer driver, is required to use a wireless printer?

• Tracking changes to firewall configs?

  Myself and one other indivdual will be taking over some of the daily firewall management duties soon and I'm looking for a way to track changes on our firewall configurations for auditing purposes and need some ideas on a good way to track changes the changes that are made. I don't have a lot of specific criteria but here are some of the basic things I would like to be able to do: Access to previous revisions of firewall configs Access to changes made and by whom When specific changes were made I'm wondering if some sort of revision control software would work here as a way to track the the changes? Or if some other approach would work better for managing the change control in this situation. I'm open to any and all suggestions at this point. EDIT: We are using a Checkpoint pair, one passive one active configuration. I will update again with specific model numbers when I get a chance.

• Installing Java on a Virtual Private Server

  I have recently managed to get my employer to pay for a vps. I teach and asked the vps provider to enable Perl, Python, Ruby, Tomcat and Java. They've done the first four (really quickly) but have got back to me asking which parts of Java I need. I think the Java Virtual Machine is a given but what other S/W do I need to get installed? I think by getting the vps I now have the chance to teach Enterprise Java and want to get into Java Message Server and Enterprise patterns. Can I get Glassfish installed or is that a silly question? • Abnormally high amount of Transmit discards reported by Solarwinds for multiple switches

  I have several 3750X Cisco switches that, according to our Solarwinds NPM, are producing billions of transmit discards per day. I'm not sure why it's reporting these discards. Many of the ports on the 3750X's have 2960's connected to them and are hardcoded as trunk ports. • 8007064c(2011) and 80280007(2009) persistant after all known repairs

  I'm on Windows 7 Home x64, and have ran into a major issue with Live Messenger(which I use daily). I have full offline installers for both 2011 and the last Wave 3 2009(14.0.8117.0416) Suites. Both give the following errors: Live Essentials 2011 Offline installer(official): An unknown error occured. Error:0x8007064c Source WLXSuite WL 2009 offline installer(official): You already have a more recent version of Windows Live. Error: OnCatalogResult:0x80280007 Next steps: If you want to install this older version, first uninstall any later versions that are on your computer. Get help with this error The 2011 installer also says it is updating messenger, I don't select anything else. Then last 2009 installer says their is a newer version that needs uninstalled even after the following procedures. MS Help pages provided all basically lead to using uninstall from control panel. Which I've uninstalled all Live components including watcom safety scanner and portable SQL from. I've followed online instructions for manually deleting folders from Program Files(x86), Appdata, and some others under \User\All Users and the one for the one account on the machine. I've used CCcleaner 3.01, ASC 3.7.3 and Beta 4 with deep scan along with deleting folders, and checked their uninstallers for Live components too, and none were there. wlmuninstaller.exe tool reports nothing, but after a failed install it finds something, but failes to clean it under all user admin privilege. The same errors still occur after all of that. Google searching I see people on forums suggesting reinstalling the OS cause MS doesn't even know how to fix this, but I'm hoping someone here can help. NOTE: I don't have System Restore or any other state freeze utilities going, and I don't have any real time AV going(I sometime scan with defender, anti rootkits, and online scanners). • Which app has a notification sound with 3 descending notes?

  Brand new Windows 7 box loaded with the usual dev tools -- VS2008, Firefox, Chatzilla, Thunderbird, emacs, Pidgin, Putty, iTunes, SharpReader. Every couple of minutes, I get an audio notification consisting of three rising notes, maybe a middle-C-G-F on a piano (I don't have a piano handy, and don't have time to use GarageBand to try to figure it out). Nothing in the notification bar is flashing when this happens. The sound isn't in any of the Windows Sound control panel applets. And it's not in C:\Windows\Media, so it's most likely coming from a non-Microsoft app. Any chance it's Pidgin when the status one of my contact's changes (which happens plenty frequently)? Oh, look at this --- Tools/Mute Sounds. Let's try that and see what happens... Is this familiar to anyone?

• Need advice on a monitoring, reminder and warning application.

  I am a developer that also has to monitor several things on different servers. Such as: 1) Did all of the MS SQL databases backup last night? 2) Did all of the MySQL databases backup last night? 3) Were the database dumps actually copied to the right folder? 4) How much free space is left on each server's hard drives? 5) How big are folders "abc", "def", "etc" getting? 6) Send emails/alerts when thresholds are reached Etc. Just basically something to help me NOT forget such important things. I thought about writing something myself but didn't want to waste the effort if something is already out there. I would also prefer one application instead of many if I could. Thanks. EDIT Forgot to mention the operating system. These run on Windows Server 2003 and/or 2008. In fact, what would be cool is a program that supports multiple servers from one machine. Something that can log into those servers.

  I have a machine running a java app talking to a mysql instance running on the same instance. the app uses jdbc4 drivers from mysql. I keep getting com.mysql.jdbc.exceptions.jdbc4.CommunicationsException at random times. Here is the whole message. Could not open JDBC Connection for transaction; nested exception is com.mysql.jdbc.exceptions.jdbc4.CommunicationsException: The last packet successfully received from the server was25899 milliseconds ago.The last packet sent successfully to the server was 25899 milliseconds ago, which is longer than the server configured value of 'wait_timeout'. You should consider either expiring and/or testing connection validity before use in your application, increasing the server configured values for client timeouts, or using the Connector/J connection property 'autoReconnect=true' to avoid this problem. For mysql, the value of global 'wait_timeout' and 'interactive_timeout' is set to 3600 seconds and 'connect_timeout' is set to 60 secs. the wait timeout value is much higher than the 26 secs(25899 msecs). mentioned in the exception trace. • ThinkPad T400 backlight doesn't always turn on when booting from battery

  I have a Lenovo ThinkPad T400, which I've owned for about a year. A while back, I noticed a problem in which the LED backlight would not always turn on when booting from battery. Usually, if I hold the power button down until the BIOS screen shows up, the backlight turns, but sometimes even that doesn't work. If I just press the power button and let it go right away, the backlight usually doesn't turn on. This happens before the OS (I dual-boot Linux and Windows) gets a chance to boot - the BIOS screen itself is displayed without the backlight if it fails to turn on, so the problem isn't at the OS level. Any ideas? Thanks!

• Photoshop CS6 Corrupted File recovery

  Last night I was working on a client application mock-up in photoshop, but was goin to take a break from my work so I saved the .PSD file on my internal HDD and put my computer into stand-by mode once the file had finished saving. Unfortunately my computer crashed while it was entering stand-by and shut itself down (photoshop was still open). I did not boot it again to make sure all my files were ok because they had already been saved, but today once I opened up the file again it was extremely corrupted and also completely un-editable (screenshot bellow). so what im asking is there any way to recover my work, or at least some of it? i have put in a good few days work on this project and would hate to have to restart it. the size of the file is 3070 KB, even though it reads as 712 KB in photoshop. i dont know if these file sizes are larger or either smaller than the original non-corrupted file's size, but considering all the layers in the file i suspect it was larger before it corrupted. im using windows XP professional 32bit SP3. both my OS and said .PSD file are located on the same internal HDD (74.4 GB). i do have an external HDD (1.5 TB) but i primarily only use it for movies music and tv shows. i dont know if it was plugged in t the time of me editing the document last, though, if it means anything. i have tried many image and PSd recovery softwares but none have returned any results that may help recover my work. edit: i tried using a photo reccovery software (odboso Photorecovery) that actually seems to recover the corrupted file in question judging by the size of the file, but i cannot recover it because of the licence fee. knowing that the file is still likely on my HDD, what location might it be located?

• How to enlarge a .PDF document to better show it in a Kindle 6"?

  I have a kindle 6". The problem is that I often read pdf files that are technical, therefore, it doesn't get converted very well to kindle's native format (for example, code blocks get messed, and things like that). When I view the pdf page, it's very small to read easily, so I have to rotate the screen to a horizontal position in order to see it better, but my page get divided. But some documents would be easy to read in vertical position if I had the chance to enlarge the font size a little bit in a external pdf editor, therefore enabling the reading in the vertical orientation. Has anybody had the same situation? Is there a solution for that?

  I doubt that anyone even remembers Site Server 3 - most of those that had any contact with it will have spent the last decade trying to forget. But, on the off-chance that someone out there does remember it, perhaps you also remember what can be done to un-blacklist a user who has been blacklisted as a result of supplying incorrect login details 3 times? I have a user that's been blacklisted that I really really need to recover, and yet I can find no way to do this. (I'm not even able to figure out where the blacklist is stored - I'd be quite prepared to nuke it if that's what it takes).

• RAID5 on SmartArray P410i online resize

  I have P410i+256M Cache without battery backup. My RAID5 was build over 3*136GB disks, now all disks were replaced to a 3*300GB array. How can I extend it to use the whole space? HPacucli doesn't allows that, I think this might be because no battery is present. I have a redundant power supply. All data is mirrored over DRBD to a secondary server, so I can try to resize with a chance of loss of data in case of power failure, but I prefer to have an online resize.

  I need to improve my linux hosted vmware workstation for using multiple virtual machines at the same time. I feel very stupid I lost a great blog post link which I found last month (and I'm not able to find it again..) so I try to ask here if anyone can help me: This is my host (laptop): 16GB DDR3 Ram HDD Hybrid 750GB 7200 (8GB SSD Cache) Mint 15 x64 Kernel 3.9.7 swappiness set to 10 The above are the important things about the host. So, My need is the ability to run 2 or 3 VMs at the same time. The lack of performance is about the disk, The last time from that blog post I lost, I setup /tmp to be mounted ad a memory partition and in my previous installation that was good, now I'm not able to find a good solution to tweak the things. I think with 16GB o RAM there will be no problems to run multiple VMs, but whe they start to swap or use the /tmp things going bad (guest cursor going too fast after a freeze, guest freeze and so on) Anyone can help me to fit a good host tweak and configuration to get better performance? Here you can select whether to apply changes to all image sizes or make the thumbnail different. This is exactly what I'd like to do, except for the fact that I don't want Wordpress to scale it down to 150x150 pixels (or another predefined resolution). I'd just like to display a cropped (and therefore smaller) version of the picture which is then linked to the (uncropped) original. I also tried to set the thumbnails' width and height to 0 in the preferences. Then, however, I don't even get the chance to assign a cropped version as thumbnail in the editor. Could you tell me how to achieve that? Or isn't it possible at all?

• Understanding the Linux boot process, subsystem initialization, & udev rules?

  I'm creating UDEV rules for automounting external drives on a headless server, much in the same way as Gnome-VFS does automounting during a user session. I'm concerned with the rule's behavior at boot-time. There's a good chance one of these drives will be connected during a boot, and I'd prefer any connected drives get mounted in the right place. The drives might be either USB or Firewire, and they are mounted from a shell script fired off by UDEV on detecting an "add". Here are my questions: When UDEV runs the mount for these devices at boot, will the system be ready to mount it? Or will the script get triggered too early? If it's too early, what's a good way for a script to tell that the system isn't ready yet (so sleep a while before checking again)? The UDEV rule matches ACTION=="add". Does this event even fire at system boot?

• Any "Magic Tricks" For Getting Data Back After Windows 7 Install

  My old man installed Windows 7 without making a proper backup, and now realizes he left behind some important data. He did a true "clean install", so there is no Windows.old folder in the root directory. However, I believe the format performed on the hard drive was only a quick format, so I am hoping there is some chance at data recovery. I took his hard drive out, and have spent a majority of the weekend researching data recovery options. I paid $70 for the GetDataBack software, but have had little success with it. I can see all of the files I want to restore, however they appear corrupt when I try to open them. With that all being said, does anyone know of a viable way to recover some of this data, or is it a lost cause all together?

• "Error: Unknown error" when trying to start virtual machine from VMware server

  Problem We are running VMware Server 2.0.0 build-116503 on a Ubuntu 10.04 LTS server. There is a virtual machine installed, running Lotus Domino on Windows Server 2003. Ever since a sudden power failure last week, the virtual machine won't properly start up. When I run the command: vmrun -T server -h https://127.0.0.1:8333/sdk -u root -p jk2x2208 start "[standard] lotus/test.vmx" … after 30 seconds it displays: Error: Unknown error That's about everything I get. I know the command is right, since that's what we've used all the time. This has happened last Saturday after a scheduled backup shutdown, and somehow I was able to start it again. This week, it happened again, and I can't get it back up. Occasionally, I also get: Error: Cannot connect to the virtual machine When I get this, and I run the start command, it seemingly works. Why is this so random? Which configuration could have been messed up? What I've tried / other info I already shut down VMware itself with /etc/init.d/vmware stop. This works. I tried to start VMware again with /etc/init.d/vmware start. It complains that it's "not configured", which is why I had to rm /etc/vmware/not_configured, and then try to start again. There have been no software updates on the machine, and no configuration changes

• Trouble cloning a Macbook Pro hard drive

  I am trying to upgrade the 250GB hard drive in my MacBook Pro (early 2008 model) to a 750GB drive. I have connected the new drive via an external USB enclosure. The drive is recognized fine, I can format it, etc. However, every time I try to clone the drive, I am getting Input/Output errors. Before the clone operation, I have verified both the internal and the external drive using Disk Utility, and they both check out fine. After the clone operation, the external drive shows multiple "Invalid node structure" errors: I have tried two approaches for cloning the drive: Using Disk Utility, by starting from the OSX install DVD Using Carbon Copy Cloner The outcome is the same in both cases. The Carbon Copy Cloner logs show a handful of the following types of errors: rsync: mkstemp "<... an external filename ...>" failed: Input/output error (5) rsync: stat "<... an external filename ...>" failed: Input/output error (5) The actual files affected seem to be different across different runs of the application. Before the last run, I used Disk Utility to (once more) reformat the external drive and explicitly overwrite it with zeros, but this made no difference. I also tried running a surface scan in Tech Tool Pro overnight. It got about 2/3 of the way through before I had to disconnect the drive (had to take my MacBook Pro to work), but so far it didn't report any bad blocks. Assuming it scans the drive in the same order in which blocks would be allocated during actual use, it seems like if bad blocks were to blame for the clone failures, they should have been found already (given that the source drive is only 250GB). As a last attempt, I may try SuperDuper as well, although my understanding is that it uses the same underlying rsync approach as Carbon Copy Cloner, so it's unlikely to perform any better. Are there any other things I should try before I send the drive in for a replacement? Could these problems be caused by my internal drive, even though it works fine and checks out fine in Disk Utility?
