• ASP.Net Response Filter Causing SharePoint 2010 "Unexpected Error"

  Hello everyone, I'm debugging an HttpModule with an ASP.NET response filter. This dynamically rewrites portions of rendered SharePoint WCM pages. The publishing pages render fine in SP2007 on both Server 2003 and Server 2008. However the equivalent pages fail to render in SP2010 B2 on Server 2008 R2. The generic "An unexpected error has occurred message" page is displayed. This error only happens when the response filter is applied to an .aspx page. Other page types, such as .css, render fine on this platform. This error also happens when the response filter does not modify the page at all (pure pass-through). This KB article seems very closely related: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2014472. However, this same error occurs with caching disabled. I see no related entries in any of the following: ULS for SP, Event Log, Failed Request Tracing (IIS7). Running under the debugger suggests that the custom code is not raising any exceptions. Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.

• Poor execution plans when using a filter and CONTAINSTABLE in a query

  We have an interesting problem that I was hoping someone could help to shed some light on. At a high level the problem is as below: The following query executes quickly (1 second): SELECT SA.* FROM cg.SEARCHSERVER_ACTYS AS SA JOIN CONTAINSTABLE(CG.SEARCHSERVER_ACTYS, NOTE, 'reports') AS T1 ON T1.[Key]=SA.UNIQUE_ID but if we add a filter to the query, then it takes approximately 2 minutes to return: SELECT SA.* FROM cg.SEARCHSERVER_ACTYS AS SA JOIN CONTAINSTABLE(CG.SEARCHSERVER_ACTYS, NOTE, 'reports') AS T1 ON T1.[Key]=SA.UNIQUE_ID WHERE SA.CHG_DATE'19 Feb 2010' Looking at the execution plan for the two queries, I can see that in the second case there are two places where there are huge differences between the actual and estimated number of rows, these being: 1) For the FulltextMatch table valued function where the estimate is approx 22,000 rows and the actual is 29 million rows (which are then filtered down to 1670 rows before the join) and 2) For the index seek on the full text index, where the estimate is 1 row and the actual is 13,000 rows As a result of the estimates, the optimiser is choosing to use a nested loops join (since it assumes a small number of rows) hence the plan is inefficient. We can work around the problem by either (a) parameterising the query and adding an OPTION (OPTIMIZE FOR UNKNOWN) to the query or (b) by forcing a HASH JOIN to be used. In both of these cases the query returns in sub 1 second and the estimates appear reasonable. My question really is 'why are the estimates being used in the poorly performing case so wildly inaccurate and what can be done to improve them'? Statistics are up to date on the indexes on the indexed view being used here. Any help greatly appreciated.

• How can I automatically release resources RAII-style in Perl?

  Say I have a resource (e.g. a filehandle or network socket) which has to be freed: open my $fh, "<", "filename" or die "Couldn't open filename: $!"; process($fh); close $fh or die "Couldn't close filename: $!"; Suppose that process might die. Then the code block exits early, and $fh doesn't get closed. I could explicitly check for errors: open my $fh, "<", "filename" or die "Couldn't open filename: $!"; eval {process($fh)}; my $saved_error = $@; close $fh or die "Couldn't close filename: $!"; die $saved_error if $saved_error; but this kind of code is notoriously difficult to get right, and only gets more complicated when you add more resources. In C++ I would use RAII to create an object which owns the resource, and whose destructor would free it. That way, I don't have to remember to free the resource, and resource cleanup happens correctly as soon as the RAII object goes out of scope - even if an exception is thrown. Unfortunately in Perl a DESTROY method is unsuitable for this purpose as there are no guarantees for when it will be called. Is there a Perlish way to ensure resources are automatically freed like this even in the presence of exceptions? Or is explicit error checking the only option?

• GUI for generating XML

  Hello. Does anybody know of GUIs for generating XMLs? This means the user will not be presented with an IDE with support for XML for him to type XML codes. This would be helpful for non-technical people using the system. I know this sounds easy, given many libraries that can help in generating XMLs. The issue here is that the schema is really that flexible rather than being straightforward like representing books in a library with their properties. Imagine HTML, where we can create font tags inside a body, a table, a div, or nested even within itself. The solution is a WYSIWYG application that allows user to generate html codes (XML). However, that is good for XML applied in webpages since they involve visual aspect and design. My application of XML would focus on representing some conceptual and computational definitions, much like sql-like syntax, but more than that. I'm actually after the approach or previous works done or tried, although having a library/working framework for that would be better. Btw, I'm using Java for this project. Currently, I'm just thinking of presenting element tags where user will be able to drag and drop them and nest them with each other. And perhaps, assist them through a forms in inputing values for XML attributes. I'm still hoping if there are better ideas from the community. Thank you.

• Using authsmtp from a Grails server

  This is quite a specific question, and I have had no luck on the grails nabble forum, so I thought I would post here. I am using the grails mail plug-in, but I think my question is a general one about using authsmtp as an email gateway from my server. I am having trouble sending mail from my app using authsmtp. I have installed and configured the mail plugin and was originally using my ISP's SMTP server to send mails. However when I deployed to AWS EC2 this failed because my elastic IP was blocked by the SMTP host. So I bought myself an authsmtp account and set up my server email address as an accepted one at authsmtp. I then changed my configuration in SecurityConfig.groovy to point to the authsmtp server that I had been designated... mailHost = "mail.authsmtp.com" mailUsername = "myusername" mailPassword = "mypassword" mailProtocol = "smtp" mailFrom = "[email protected]" mailPort = 2525 ...and I'm just trying to get this to work locally before I deploy back up to AWS. Sending mail fails and in my log I have this exception: 2010-02-13 10:59:44,218 [http-8080-1] ERROR service.EmailerService - Failed to send emails: Failed messages: com.sun.mail.smtp.SMTPSendFailedException: 513 5.0.0 Your email system must authenticate before sending mail. org.springframework.mail.MailSendException; nested exception details (1) are: Failed message 1: com.sun.mail.smtp.SMTPSendFailedException: 513 5.0.0 Your email system must authenticate before sending mail. at com.sun.mail.smtp.SMTPTransport.issueSendCommand(SMTPTransport.java:1388) at com.sun.mail.smtp.SMTPTransport.mailFrom(SMTPTransport.java:959) at com.sun.mail.smtp.SMTPTransport.sendMessage(SMTPTransport.java:583) I'm a bit lost since the username and password I provide in the configuration are definitely correct. A terse and not very helpful conversation with authsmtp support suggests that I need to MD5 and/or base64 encode my credentials before sending, so my question is in three parts... 1) any idea what's going on with the failure and why that message is appearing? 2) how would I encode the credentials to pass to authsmtp and how would I configure that for the mail plugin 3) has anyone successfully connected and sent mail through authsmtp from the mail plugin and specifically from AWS EC2?

• Cannot upload media via Wordpress uploader

  This has to do with media uploading in Wordpress. Every time WP creates a folder for new uploads (it organizes uploads by year and month: yyyy/mm), it creates it with the "apache:apache' user and group, with full access to all (777 or drwxrwxrwx). However, after that, WP cannot create a folder within that folder (e.g.: mkdir 2011 succeeds, but mkdir 2011/01 fails). Also, uploads cannot be moved into these newly created folders even though the permissions are 777 (rwxrwxrwx). Once a month, I have to chown the newly created folders to be the same as user:group as the rest of the files. Once I do that, uploading works fine (which doesn't make sense to me The really frustrating part is that this problem doesn't exist in other WP installs on other domains on the same server. * I wasn't sure if this should be here or on serverfault. Edit: The containing directory /.../httpdocs/blog/wp-content/uploads has the correct ownership drwxrwxrwx 5 myuser psaserv 4096 Jun 3 18:38 uploads This is a Plesk/CentOS environment hosted by Media Temple (dv). On domain A, where the WP problem is, it cannot create the nested directory mkdir("$d/$d"). However, on domain B, both directories are successfully created. I am running each script at /var/www/vhosts/domainA/httpdocs/tmp/t.php and /var/www/vhosts/domainB/httpdocs/tmp/t.php respectively I checked the permissions on tmp, httpdocs, and domain[AB] and they are the same for each path. The only thing that differs is the user.

• UnsupportedEncodingException thrown when using Resin and Grails

  I've encountered a strange problem in a Grails webapp running under Grails: java.io.UnsupportedEncodingException is thrown quite frequently due to various unknown encoding strings (such as "ISO8859_10", "ISO-8859-10"), and the strange thing is that this is done entirely within the Resin and Grails code. That is - no custom code is involved when the exception is thrown. I'm not sure if it is Grails or the servlet container's code that should handle the exception. But I'd assume that the exception should be handled somewhere and not bubble up all the way to stderr. • Regexp that matches user-agents of end-user browsers but NOT crawlers with >90 % accuracy

  I'm trying to construct a regexp that will evaluate to true for User-Agent:s of "browsers navigated by humans", but false for bots. Needless to say the matching will not be exact, but if it gets things right in say 90 % of cases that is more than good enough. My approach so far is to target the User-Agent string of the the five major desktop browsers (MSIE, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera). Specifically I want the regexp NOT to match if the user-agent is a bot (Googlebot, msnbot, etc.). Currently I'm using the following regexp which appears to achieve the desired precision: ^(Mozilla.*(Gecko|KHTML|MSIE|Presto|Trident)|Opera).*$ I've observed small number of false negatives which are mostly mobile browsers. The exceptions all match: (BlackBerry|HTC|LG|MOT|Nokia|NOKIAN|PLAYSTATION|PSP|SAMSUNG|SonyEricsson) My question is: Given the desired accuracy level, how would you improve the regexp? Can you think of any major false positives or false negatives to the given regexp? Please note that the question is specifically about regexp-based User-Agent matching. There are a bunch of other approaches to solving this problem, but those are out of the scope of this question.

• Exception Handling in ASP.NET MVC and Ajax - [HandleException] filter

  All, I'm learning MVC and using it for a business app (MVC 1.0). I'm really struggling to get my head around exception handling. I've spent a lot of time on the web but not found anything along the lines of what I'm after. We currently use a filter attribute that implements IExceptionFilter. We decorate a base controller class with this so all server side exceptions are nicely routed to an exception page that displays the error and performs logging. I've started to use AJAX calls that return JSON data but when the server side implementation throws an error, the filter is fired but the page does not redirect to the Error page - it just stays on the page that called the AJAX method. Is there any way to force the redirect on the server (e.g. a ASP.NET Server.Transfer or redirect?) I've read that I must return a JSON object (wrapping the .NET Exception) and then redirect on the client, but then I can't guarantee the client will redirect... but then (although I'm probably doing something wrong) the server attempts to redirect but then gets an unauthorised exception (the base controller is secured but the Exception controller is not as it does not inherit from this) Has anybody please got a simple example (.NET and jQuery code). When I scroll the page (lots of text gets injected into the page -- it is a full-text search app) the lightgray background is painted right across the text, as shown in the attached image. Is there a way to cause the browser to recalculate page-depth after injecting content? Or is this problem related to this line: titleDiv.innerHTML += content; Is it better to add titleDiv's content a node at a time? I've recently seen respected people using innerHTML in this way, although postings from from several years ago discourage use of innerHTML. 1:

• Maven Mojo & SCM Plugin: Check for a valid working directory

  Hi there. I'm using maven-scm-plugin from within a Mojo and am trying to figure out how to determine if a directory D is a valid working directory of an SCM URL U (i.e. a checkout of U to D already happened). The context is that I want to do a checkout of U if D is a working set or do an update if it isn't. The plan is to check out U to D if D does not exist, update D if D is a valid working directory of U, display an error if D exists and is not a valid working directory of U. What I tried is to call ScmManager.status(), ScmManager.list() and ScmManager.changelog() and try to guess something from their results. But that didn't work. The results from status and changelog always return something positive (isSuccess() = true, getChangedFiles() = valid List, no exceptions to catch), whereas list throws an exception in any case. ScmRepository and ScmFileSet don't seem to provide suitable methods as well. An option would be to always do an update if D exists but then I cannot tell if it is a working directory of U or any SCM working directory at all. The ideal solution would be independent of the actual SCM system and a specific ScmVersion. Thanks for your help! Patrick

• PHP autoloader: ignoring non-existing include

  I have a problem with my autoloader: public function loadClass($className) { $file = str_replace(array('_', '\\'), '/', $className) . '.php'; include_once $file; } As you can see, it's quite simple. I just deduce the filename of the class and try to include it. I have a problem though; I get an exception when trying to load a non-existing class (because I have an error handler which throws exceptions). This is inconvenient, because it's also fired when you use class_exists() on a non-existing class. You don't want an exception there, just a "false" returned. I fixed this earlier by putting an @ before the include (supressing all errors). The big drawback with this, though, is that any parser/compiler errors (that are fatal) in this include won't show up (not even in the logs), resulting in a hard to find bug. What would be the best way to solve both problems at once? The easiest way would be to include something like this in the autoloader (pseudocode): foreach (path in the include_path) { if (is_readable(the path + the class name)) readable = true; } if (!readable) return; But I worry about the performance there. • Is there an MVVM-friendly way to swap views without value converters firing unnecessarily?

  I thought what I was doing was right out of the Josh Smith MVVM handbook, but I seem to be having a lot of problems with value converters firing when no data in the view-model has changed. So, I have a ContentControl defined in XAML like this: <ContentControl Grid.Row="0" Content="{Binding CurrentViewModel}" /> The Window containing this ContentControl references a resource dictionary that looks something like this: <ResourceDictionary ...> <DataTemplate DataType="{x:Type lib_vm:SetupPanelViewModel}"> <lib_v:SetupPanel /> </DataTemplate> <DataTemplate DataType="{x:Type lib_vm:InstructionsPanelViewModel}"> <lib_v:InstructionsPanel /> </DataTemplate> </ResourceDictionary> So, basically, the two data templates specify which view to show with which view-model. This switches the views as expected whenever the CurrentViewModel property on my window's view-model changes, but it also seems to cause value converters on the views to fire even when no data has changed. It's a particular problem with IMultiValueConverter classes, because the values in the value array get set to DependencyProperty.UnsetValue, which causes exceptions unless I specifically check for that. But I'm getting other weird side effects too. This has me wondering if I shouldn't just do everything manually, like this: Instantiate each view. Set the DataContext of each view to the appropriate view-model. Give the ContentControl a name and make it public. Handle the PropertyChanged event for the window. In the event handler, manually set the Content property of the ContentControl to the appropriate view, based the CurrentViewModel (using if statements). This seems to work, but it also seems very inelegant. I'm hoping there's a better way. Could you please advise me the best way to handle view switching so that value converters don't fire unnecessarily?

• Why is this SocketException not caught by a generic catch routine?

  Our company provides a network component (DLL) for a GUI application. It uses a Timer that checks for disconnections. If it wants to reconnect, it calls: internal void timClock_TimerCallback(object state) { lock (someLock) { // ... try { DoConnect(); } catch (Exception e) { // Log e.Message omitted // Raise event with e as parameter ErrorEvent(this, new ErrorEventArgs(e)); DoDisconnect(); } // ... } } So the problem is, inside of the DoConnect() routine a SocketException is thrown (and not caught). I would assume, that the catch (Exception e) should catch ALL exceptions but somehow the SocketException was not caught and shows up to the GUI application. protected void DoConnect() { // client = new TcpClient(); client.NoDelay = true; // In the following call the SocketException is thrown client.Connect(endPoint.Address.ToString(), endPoint.Port); // ... (login stuff) } The doc confirmed that SocketException extends Exception. The stacktrace that showed up is: TcpClient.Connect() -> DoConnect() -> timClock_TimerCallback So the exception is not thrown outside the try/catch block. Any ideas why it doesn't work?

• Django 'ImproperlyConfigured' error after deployment on google app engine

  Hello, I'm currently trying to get my first django project running on Google App Engine. I followed the instructions given here http://www.allbuttonspressed.com/projects/djangoappengine as best I could. Unfortunately I have run into some issues. Locally everything runs fine, no problems. I then tried to deploy my project to the cloud. This is where I'm totally stuck. I always receive 500 Server Errors coupled with google.appengine.runtime.DeadlineExceededError's. Every now and then I get the following error message in my logs, which I think is the root of the problem : <class 'django.core.exceptions.ImproperlyConfigured'>: ImportError projectyalanda.pricecompare: No module named projectyalanda.pricecompare Obviously something is wrong in the way I reference my django app. Why this is only an issue in the cloud is a mystery to me. The interesting part in the settings.py file is setup as following: INSTALLED_APPS = ( 'djangotoolbox', # 'django.contrib.auth', 'django.contrib.contenttypes', 'django.contrib.sessions', 'projectyalanda.pricecompare', ) I absolutely can't figure out why django/appengine wouldn't be able to find the module, especially since everything works perfectly locally. So where else can I look? The local folder structure is of course also correct as automatically done by django, so maybe something is messed up during deployment? How would I be able to find out? • Saving multiple objects in a single call in rails

  I have a method in rails that is doing something like this: a = Foo.new("bar") a.save b = Foo.new("baz") b.save ... x = Foo.new("123", :parent_id => a.id) x.save ... z = Foo.new("zxy", :parent_id => b.id) z.save The problem is this takes longer and longer the more entities I add. I suspect this is because it has to hit the database for every record. Since they are nested, I know I can't save the children before the parents are saved, but I would like to save all of the parents at once, and then all of the children. It would be nice to do something like: a = Foo.new("bar") b = Foo.new("baz") ... saveall(a,b,...) x = Foo.new("123", :parent_id => a.id) ... z = Foo.new("zxy", :parent_id => b.id) saveall(x,...,z) That would do it all in only two database hits. Is there an easy way to do this in rails, or am I stuck doing it one at a time?

  I am trying work out with MERGE statment to Insert / Update Dimension Table of Type SCD2 My source is a Table var to Merge with Dimension table. My MERGE statement is throwing an error as: The target table 'DM.DATA_ERROR.ERROR_DIMENSION' of the INSERT statement cannot be on either side of a (primary key, foreign key) relationship when the FROM clause contains a nested INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, or MERGE statement. Found reference constraint 'FK_ERROR_DIMENSION_to_AUDIT_CreatedBy'.   I have a problem with IE causing two errors: 1. Object doesn't support this property or method 2. Call was rejected by callee. My Intention: To call window.opener.myObject method that is going to retrieve some data using ajax and pass in callback function that live as nested function in popup window that initiated call that is going to handle response data and modify popup window html accordingly. Here is a scenario: I pull up popup window that handles some specific operation. This popup window calling window.opener.myObject method that using ajax call. I'm passing in popup window function that is going to handle response and it works with ff and safari but not with ie. • Configuring zend to use gmail smtp: Windows Apache dev-environment: "Could not open socket" error - repeatedly - going mad

  My dev environment is Win XP SP2 / Apache 2.something PHP 5.something_or_other My prod env is Linux Ubuntu / Apache 2.something_else PHP 5.something_or_other_else The code is all Zend Framework Version: 1.11.1 I can telnet to: smtp.gmail.com 465 from the PC. I have Mercury configured on my PC to use gmail as it's smtp host and it works just fine. (MercuryC SMTP Client). Mercury is set to use port 465 and SSL on smtp.gmail.com -- No problem. Zend mail works just fine on my production environment using the production mail server to send out mail. It's the same basic application.ini but with different values in the mail variables. On my local PC dev setup, my application.ini contains: (same values as I use in Mercury) mail.templatePath = APPLICATION_PATH "/emails" mail.sender.name = "myAccount" mail.sender.email = "[email protected]" mail.host = smtp.gmail.com mail.smtp.auth = "login" mail.smtp.username = "[email protected]" mail.smtp.password = "myPassWord" mail.smtp.ssl = "ssl" mail.smtp.port = 465 I have been doing trial and error for hours trying to get a single email out with no success. In every case, regardless of server or port settings it throws an error and reports: Could not open socket. Both Apache and Mercury Core are exceptions in my Windows Firewall config. Mercury seems to be having no problem. I have searched stackoverflow before posting this and have been googling for hours -- with no success. I am slowly losing my mind I would be very much obliged for any tip as to what might be wrong. • Loading Facebook fb:profile-pic via AJAX in Facebook Connect site

  After a page loads, I'm making an AJAX request to pull down an HTML chunk that contains tags representing a Facebook user profile picture. I append the result to a point in the DOM but the logos don't load, instead all I see is the default silhouette.   I have a space in which I would like certain elements (represented here by A, B, D, and G) to each be in its own "corner" of the design. The corners ought to line up as if each of the four elements was repelling the other; a rectangle. This is to be contained within an unresizable panel. I will have several similar panels and want to keep the location of the elements as identical as possible. (I needed something a little more complex than a wx.Wizard, but with the same general idea.) B represents a numeric progress meter (e.g. "1 of 7") in a small font. C represents a large block of text. D, E, F, and G are buttons. The G button is separated from others for functionality. I have attempted nested wx.BoxSizers (horizontal boxes inside of one vertical box) without luck. My first problem with wx.BoxSizer is that the .SetMinSize on my last row has not been honored. The second problem is that I have no idea how to make the G button "take up space" without growing comically large, or how I can jam it up against the right edge and bottom edge. I have tried to use a wx.GridBagSizer, but ran into entirely different issues. After plowing through the various online tutorials and wxPython in Action, I'm a little frustrated. The relevant forums appear to see activity once every two weeks. "Playing around with it" has gotten me nowhere; I feel as if I am trying to smooth out a hump in ill-laid carpet.

• Count rows against to SQL server (2005) table?

  I have a simple question with two options to get count of rows in a SQL server (2005). I am using VS 2005. There are two options to get the count: SELECT id FROM Table1 WHERE dt >= startDt AND dt < endDt;; I get a list of ids from above call in cache and then I get count by List.Count. Another option is SELECT COUNT(*) FROM Table1 WHERE dt >= startDt AND dt < endDt; The above call will get the count directly. The issue is that I had several cases of exceptions with the second method: timeout. What I found is that the table1 is too big with millions of data. When I used the first option, it seems OK. I am confused by the fact that Count() takes more time than getting all the rows(is that true?). Not sure if the aggregation call with Count() would cause SQL server to create temporary table or cache on server side and it would result in slow performance when table is too big? I am not sure what is the best way to get the count?

• How to get rid of Internet Explorer 7 reloading on fragment change

  I have an anchor <a href="#!admin">General</a> somewhere in my page. Clicking this in any browser but IE7 (haven't tried IE6) causes no page reload, as expected. However, under IE7 it reloads the page as soon as it's clicked. The strangest thing is that I have the exact same anchor elsewhere in the page and it causes no reload. The only difference I can see between these is a slight difference in style, and the fact that the faulty anchor is deeply nested in divs, where the other is closer to the top. My questions: Is this a known bug with IE7? If so, is there any work around? If not, any clue as to what might be going wrong? Edit: If you want to see this yourself, go to http://filouguestbook.appspot.com/#!main sign-in with a google account and click on the Settings link the the top bar. Switch between the General and Accounts pages, the app will reload. From the Accounts page, click on Settings in the top bar, this will switch tab but not reload!
