• Ideas for web development practical jokes?

  I am a web developer for a Django-based site for a student organization, and I have the opportunity to make the website temporarily absurd for a day of general campus-wide debauchery and chaos (long story, doesn't matter.) What are your best ideas for web development practical jokes (that you could never use in the real world)? For example, one idea we had was to use a client-side script to convert each character to its upside down equivalent in Unicode, si?? ??i? ?ui????os. I'm not necessarily looking for Django-specific solutions. I imagine most of these things would happen on the front-end. I am also quite aware that usability will suffer considerably--the point is to be fun for a day, and there will always be a link to the normal version of the site. Also, everything must be relatively cosmetic and easily reversible--I'm happy to swap out static CSS/JS/HTML/templates/images, and even temporarily add a django view, but no messing with the data level!

Boredom is a very important issue a software tester has to deal with. With regard to this I have the following questions: How can one overcome this in their day to day activities of their job as a software tester? • ASP.NET MVC - Custom validation message for value types

  When I use UpdateModel or TryUpdateModel, the MVC framework is smart enough to know if you are trying to pass in a null into a value type (e.g. the user forgets to fill out the required Birth Day field) . Unfortunately, I don't know how to override the default message, "A value is required." in the summary into something more meaningful ("Please enter in your Birth Day"). There has to be a way of doing this (without writing too much work-around code), but I can't find it. Any help? EDIT Also, I guess this would also be an issue for invalid conversions, e.g. BirthDay = "Hello".

I was recently working with a DateTime object, and wrote something like this: DateTime dt = DateTime.Now; dt.AddDays(1); return dt; // still today's date! WTF? The intellisense documentation for AddDays says it adds a day to the date, which it doesn't - it actually returns a date with a day added to it, so you have to write it like: DateTime dt = DateTime.Now; dt = dt.AddDays(1); return dt; // tomorrow's date This one has bitten me a number of times before, so I thought it would be useful to catalog the worst C# gotchas.

• Ubuntu Newbie Needs Assistance!!

  New Ubuntu User Needs Help!- version 9.10 does not communicate with laptop Hello folks, Several days ago, I installed Ubuntu 9.10 onto my Acer Aspire 3100 laptop, running it alongside Widows Vista as a dual-bootable system. Creation of the Ubuntu boot CD went fine, and the installation onto my hard drive was flawless. Ubuntu opens and behaves as I would expect, except for one little problem. For reasons unknown to me, Ubuntu is not communicating with my laptop's networking hardware, and I have no internet connectivity, even when sitting directly under the wireless router at the local library (literally), which puts out a wickedly-fast signal that my Windows Vista OS auto-detects and immediately connects to. Up in the right side of the Ubuntu desktop, I click on the network icon and it does not show a wireless connection at all, even though I am only a few feet from the router. At home, where I use a dialup modem, I also see no means of getting online. My modem is an HDAUDIO Soft Data Fax Modem with Smart CP,manufactured by CXT (Conexant Systems Inc., file version 4.0.13.0, and the driver version is 7.58.0.0). I desparately wish to convert to Ubuntu. I used Mac for ten years, and then Windows for ten years. Now, after 20 years, I want to live out my days as an open-source Ubuntu fanatic. I am ready to give the old status quo the boot! I am an advanced computer user, but I am not a programmer. I seek a solution that is user-friendly for normal people, something equivalent to a driver that I can easily install or activate that will allow Ubuntu to see my hardware and get me connected. Can anyone help me over this hopefully-little glitch so that I can move on in total Ubuntu bliss? My processor is a Mobile AMD Sempron Processor 3500+ at 1.80 GHz, 1.50 GB RAM, and a 32-bit Operating System. I am running Windows Vista Home Basic, Service Pack 2. My current email is [email protected] if you have a workable solution that does not require programmer status to implement. Surely this must be a simple fix that I simply am overlooking, but being the new guy on the block, I have yet to be enlightened. Thanks for your help in coming up to speed!! • jQuery-Facebox - Popup is not working after repaint from AJAX

  Hi I am having a set of Links in my page and I have attached the facebox jQuery functionality so that whenever a link is pressed, it will get a nice popup <a href="coach_selector_popup?day=<%= day %>&hour=<%= hour %>" rel="facebox"> Below is the script that I use for 'facebox'ing. <script type="text/javascript"> jQuery(document).ready(function($) { jQuery('a[rel*=facebox]').facebox() }) </script> The above is working fine. But when I render it again on response to some AJAX call, the functionality is getting lost, meaning when I click on the link I am redirected to a page instead of a facebox popup. I know that I need to do something when I repaint, can someone point me to the right direction?

• Is there an AUTOMATED way to pin items to the taskbar in a windows 2008 TS environment?

  We have a Windows 2008 (R2) Terminal Server environment and would like to find a way to automate the addition (Pinning) of programs to the Windows taskbar for our users. My first thought was to do this from a Group Policy, but haven't been able to find a setting for this. I've heard you can 'probably' do it via a script, but haven't seen any examples yet (I'm not a programmer, but have worked with batch scripts before). Please advice. Thanks!

• Monotouch UIScrollView/UIPageView with UITableView as panel

  Hi I'm building an app which is a guide to festivals. In the app I show lineups. You can see the Ui I have built for this on the video here: http://wmcstar.com/download.html The problem I have is that the scrollview/UIPageView - which does the left/right scrolling through the days, sometimes conflicts (i think) with the up/down scrolling of the days lineup UITableView and crashes. It doesn't crash if I disable scrolling - so the only way to switch between days is by selecting the day and programatically scrolling to the day rather than by using touch gestures. Has anyone else seen this behaviour? w://

• Constructing an object and calling a method without assignment in VB.Net

  I'm not entirely sure what to call what C# does, so I haven't had any luck searching for the VB.Net equivalent syntax (if it exists, which I suspect it probably doesn't). In c#, you can do this: public void DoSomething() { new MyHelper().DoIt(); // works just fine } But as far as I can tell, in VB.Net, you must assign the helper object to a local variable or you just get a syntax error: Public Sub DoSomething() New MyHelper().DoIt() ' won't compile End Sub Just one of those curiosity things I run into from day to day working on mixed language projects - often there is a VB.Net equivalent which uses less than obvious syntax. Anyone?

• Change Windows 7 start menu height depending on monitor size?

  I know I can change the height of the Windows 7 Start Menu so that includes more or fewer recently used apps, etc. But I have a netbook with a tiny screen that I plug into a decent sized LCD most of the time at home. Is there a way to get Win7 to use a taller Start menu with more items when I'm using the LCD and a shorter Start menu with fewer items when using the netbook's built in screen? (I'm a programmer so capable of technical solutions if there's no ready-made solution.)

• How do you find time for improving your programming skills?

  I'm a Java/J2ee programmer working in India. I'm very passionate about programming and I constantly strive to hone my programming skills by reading blogs, solving Project euler questions, learning new technologies, developing small apps etc;. But I find it very difficult to manage my time. Working for 12 hrs a day in office leaves me stressed out and spend my weekends with my family. So i hardly have like 5-6 hrs per week to actually work on something of my interest which will help me improve. How do you manage time so that you find time to improve your current standing? EDIT: 12 hours includes 1hour of travel & 1 hr of break(lunch/coffee). Effectively I work for 10 hours per day in office which is mandated by my organization. -Snehal

• Javascript string to Date conversion - simple?

  Hi all, Yesterday I managed to solve this, then lost a day's work due to the death of a HD. Now I cannot remember what I did to fix it, but I know it can be done. Input: string date in the format 'm/d/yy', eg '12/25/10', or '4/1/10' (1st April) Output - Date object I'm working with date.js and date.format.js so have Date.fromString() and Date.format() avaiable. But trying multiple combinations is not giving me what I need. IF the date were 'mm/dd/yy' then it's simple. But I'm using jquery.datepicker.js which outputs in 'm/d/yy' and I don't want to change this much I know this conversion can be done. After a 22 hour day... I need help. Thanks. Mark...

  Hi, I have an application that creates an SQLite database and saves information to it over the course of a day. At the end of the day i want to export this database to a web server. • How to effectively measure developer's work hours?

  I have a few software developers working for my projects and I would like to provide them a way to register time they spent on real development. There is good will to register development hours, no force, but we try to avoid techniques like excel sheets register because this is so uncomfortable. I can track svn commits, but this is unreliable. Developers also helps supporting different projects during the day, so assuming they work on one project by whole day is not true. I've seen utilities that popups a message every hour to confirm the project you're working on but this is annoying. Some kind of active-window-title-anaylzer might help (you can get solution name from there in the case of Visual Studio) but I have no experience with such idea. If you have any experience with programmers/designers work hours registration, please share with me. Thanks

  Hi folks, I seem to have a date formatting problem every day! I am querying a table and am getting a date back in the format dd/mm/yyyy (as a string btw). Brilliant! thats what I want. But, now I want to convert that string to a date so i can do dim dayNumber as integer = day.DayOfWeek But when I convert it to a date it changes it to #m/dd/yyyy#. AHHHH! how can I change this?   SourceGear Vault's client app has the ability to background search for changes. This is very useful because at any time I can take a quick peek and see what changes my team members have checked in and that I need to get latest on. This is also helpful for previewing any merges that might be necessary. And on a day to day basis, it helps me get a sense of what parts of the codebase are seeing the most churn. Is there a way to get this same functionality with Team Foundation Server, either with native features or a plugin? I know there is a Compare feature, but it takes way too long to be useful. Unless it could periodically refresh itself like Vault does, but I haven't found a way to do that. Anything new with Visual Studio 2010?

  I'm coding a date class and am having trouble with the post-fix increment (the prefix increment seems fine). Here is the sample code: public class date { int year, month, day; public date(int d, int m, int y) { day = d; month = m; year = y; } static public date operator ++(date d) { return d.Next(d); } } The method "Next(date d)" takes a date and returns tomorrows date (I left it out for brevity). I'm to young in C# to understand why the prefix is fine but postfix increment does nothing. But remember in C++ we would have to have two methods instead of just one - for prefix and postfix increments. Also no errors or warnings on compile.
