• How do I backup my customer's data?

  If you run a SaaS app, or work on one, I would love to hear from you. Where the safety and security of your customer's data is paramount, how do you secure it and back it up? I would love to know your main host (e.g. Heroku, Engine Yard, Rackspace, MediaTemple, etc.) and who you use for your backup. Be as detailed as possible - e.g. a quick overview of your service and the data you store (images for instance), what happens with the images when the user uploads them (e.g. they go to your Linode VPS, and posted to the site for them to see - then they are automatically sent to AWS or wherever, then once a week they are backed up to tape by the managed hosting provider, and you also back them up to your house/office). If you could also give some idea as to what the unit cost (per GB/per user/per month) of storage is - on average, I would really appreciate that. Getting ready to launch my app, and I would love to get some more perspective on the nitty gritty details involved. Thanks!

• What are the requirements to test a website using jquery.get() ? [migrated]

  I am working on a simple website. It has to search quite a few text files in different sub-folders. The rest of the page uses jquery, so I would like to use it for this also. The function I am looking at is .get() for downloading the files. So my main question is, can I test this on my local computer (Ubuntu Linux) or do I have to have it uploaded to a server? Also, if there's a better way to go about this, that would be nice to know. However, I'm more worried about getting it working.   I have a problem that I want you to help me, I am currently making a website, I am building that website on HTML5 and CSS3 technology, every feature I'd like to use I check it first in "CAN I USE", the technology I use most is box-shadow, and I already made some great things with it but, I have a doubt about the percentage of browser that don't support that technology, the percentage of browser that do not support box-shadow is around 17.12%, and if you see the conclusions (show options = other options = show conclusions) they say that that feature isn't ready yet because they are "Waiting for Opera Mini 5.0-6.0 to expire", I personally think that the best that we can do in order to make people update their browsers is not support older browser, but ... am I right thinking like this? will I have bad consecuences if I don't support older browsers? is worth to work twice just to support older browsers? should I still working with box-shadow?

  What is a reasonable goal in terms of traffic for my Flex 3 site: www.brainpinata.com Since I began a couple of months ago, I've gotten roughly 5500 ad views and 280 ad clicks. And the ad revenue is a whopping $4.80. (I don't use Google Adsense). I advertise my site using Google Adwords to try to build traffic. My budget is $10/day. What should I do? a) Push the marketing. Add a blog. Try to get backlinks, contact blogs, start a Facebook page, tweet, etc. b) Google is only indexing the static content in the SWF. The questions/answers are pulled from a mySQL database. So, Google doesn't index 99% of the content. Should I re-do the site in HTML/Javascript and hard-code the questions for each puzzle? (This would be a challenge as I don't know javascript worth squat.) Or should I hard-code the questions in XML and put them in the Flex app? If I put the questions in an XML file it's roughly 500 KB. Other ideas? c) Should I switch ad networks? (I currently get about 100 visitors a day). My ad network pays so little that if I were to make even $500/month, I would need 550,000 ad views/month, which seems impossible. If I go ahead and switch ad networks, I need to find one that allows iFrames as I've got a Flex website. Which ad networks permit their ads to be shown in iFrames? d) Should I cut and run? I put a lot of work into this project and it would really stink to get nothing out of it. I'm looking for some good advice. Looking forward to your suggestions. Thank you. -Laxmidi

• Site failing randomly - could it be Cloudflare or something weird in the JS?

  I've been working on a simple site that uses javascript to fade through some fullscreen background images as well as some other simple animations. I've tested the site on Chrome, Safari, FF and Opera on OSX, IE8+ on Win7 and Chrome & FF on Ubuntu and everything looks as I'd expect it to. However, I've had reports of the site failing to load (stops at the stage where the background fades up) on Safari and Chrome on OSX and Win. I can't replicate this on any setup so I'm finding it impossible to troubleshoot. Google's instant preview shows the site fine as does most of the options at browsershots.org so I'm really scratching my head. I'm running the site's traffic through Cloudflare and I'm wondering whether anyone can see (or knows from other sites) why Cloudflare might be mangling the JS or causing a problem somehow (I don't get any errors in the JS error console). Of course, if you can replicate the problem on your machine and can suggest an area to look at that would be amazing but I'm hoping that, like me, you don't see any problem with the site!   Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? I am trying to find somewhere to host a website which uses OrientDB as its database. My budget doesn't stretch to a dedicated server where I can configure everything as I need it. Rather, I am hoping to find somewhere, ideally UK based, that will allow me to install/install for me OrientDB on their server, that is of the normal shared server variety. • How to use different php.ini files for different VirtualHosts?

  I have my site and it's staging subdomain running on the same CentOS machine running apache. The subdomain is created using a VirtualHost, and I use it to find any bugs before I push to production. I want the php.ini file for the staging VirtualHost to be a development one, and the production site will use a production php.ini. How can I configure apache to use different php.ini files? I don't want to use php_value/php_flag for everything, I'd rather just use the php.ini file I already have available. I've tried creating an .htaccess file that looks like this, SetEnv PHPRC /path/to/php.ini/directory This has no effect, as phpinfo() tells me it's still using /etc/php.ini. I've also tried setting PHPIniDir for both virtual hosts (www and staging) and it complains about seeing the directive twice.

• Using another domain with Google App Engine

  I'm trying to change my google app engine domain (domain.appspot.com) to the domain I bought from 1&1.com (mydomain.com). I went into the google app engine settings and added the domain. After making a Google Apps account, I was asked to verify my domain. The directions say that 1&1 doesn't allow me to create TXT records, so I can't use that method for verification. Their alternative is to upload an HTML file to my server, but I didn't buy hosting with my domain, I just bought the domain. My files are on domain.appspot.com. How can I make mydomain.com point to domain.appspot.com? I've added the ns1.googleghs.com as my nameservers in my 1&1 DNS settings, but I still can't verify my domain with Google Apps.

• Meta Description or Title For Post Contents

  I have a site that has posts without titles. You can think of them as being a lot like Twitter tweets. Should I put the post contents in the meta title tag or the description tag? If I put the post contents in one of the tags what should I put in the other? My challenge is that we have very short amounts of content with no titles. I want to avoid having too many duplicate titles or descriptions. We have things like user name, full name, date, etc.

• Anti aliasing problem

  I am auditioning fonts on google web fonts and one that I was discounting was Ubuntu because it looked a bit jagged ( screenshot below taken straight from google); however afterward I read an article where it was mentioned as a good choice, and there was a screenshot where it looked really good ( to me anyway ). I am using windows 7 and have tried looking at it in chrome and firefox. I notice the same thing with some other fonts but this one is a good example because it looks perfect in the screenshot but not so good when I look at it on their site. I know this essentially is a question about setting my computer, but I thought that this would be the best place to pose the question: Is there something wrong with the settings on my machine seeing as it's obviously not showing the font the same on my computer as it did when the article writer downloaded it and used it in an image. • Best scripting language for project [on hold]

  This is a subjective question, but I don't know where else to ask it. I'd appreciate it if someone could direct me to an appropriate scripting language for my project. I'm a little new at this so I'd appreciate any help. The project is a website that will display a list of photo subject groups (such as "nature" "people" "sports" etc) on the home page. The photos will all be in subdirectories of the main photo directory (photos) and each subject group will represent a subdirectory in photos. For example in directory photos there might be 3 subdirectories, "nature" "people" "sports" and in each of those subdirectories there will be the actual photos. The idea is that when the website owner wants to update/add/delete a subject group all he has to do is add, delete or update a subdirectory of the photos directory. This means, I think, that I need a scripting language that can read the directories and files in the website and then send a web page with the information in it. What is the simplest and easiest scripting language to do this in? Any ideas? Thanks

  Use Case: Photos are organised in a folder structure by date (by software lightroom/picasa) Want to run a local webserver to host a web gallery from (already know how to run lamp etc) I want to be able to attach metadata to the photos (probably through a database not residing in the photos folder) such that they can be tagged/categoried/albumed without affecting the original photos I want to be able to assign permissions to different albums to set users I want the software to watch the photo source folder for changes so that new photos are indexed ready for applying metadata and albums. I'd like the software to handle the rendering of numerous file types (photo formats) as well as video formatts I am language agnostic so php/python heck even c#, just want software that forfills the requirements. • How to fix Google 404 not found Crawl Errors?

  I was checking on Google webmater tool for my blog site to see if there's any indication on why my blog traffic decreased to half in one day and i saw 43 Not Found crawl errors and 5 in Sitemap Not Found errors. The 5 Not Found errors in Sitemap were the links to categories. I guess I renamed categories that's why google can't find the links. As for the 43 other Not Found errors, I see blog post titles that contains (' .) EX: McDonald's, O.N.E. They weren't found by google crawler. Blog post with /CachedYou at the end and blog posts with /www.example.com attached at the end, they weren't found by Google crawlers either. My question is how do I correct those Not Found Errors? • Why was my site rejected for Google Adsense?

  I have a 3 year old blog and its got around 16 articles/tutorials about some programming problems and solutions. It's getting pretty much a lot of view lately so I decided to apply for a google adsense account. When I first applied via blogger, google replied with the following statement: Page Type: In order to participate in Google AdSense, publishers' websites and application information must satisfy the following guidelines: - Your website must be your own top-level domain (www.example.com and not www.example.com/mysite). - You must provide accurate personal information with your application that matches the information on your domain registration. - Your website must contain substantial, original content... So, as I understood it, I decide to buy a domain and point my blogger blog to that new naked domain. and here is the newly bought domain where all the contents of my old blog resides. http://icodeya.com/ I reapplied, hoping that this time, I will make the cut. But then I got this reply Further detail: Unable to review your site: While reviewing http://www.icodeya.com/, we found that your site was down or unavailable. We suggest you check whether there was a typo in the URL submitted. When your site is operational, you can resubmit your application with the correct site by following the directions below. I'm a bit disappointed. Maybe I did something wrong with DNS configuration or something. But you can clearly see that my site is fully functional. I heard that google sends robots to crawl on to the site etc. It's just sad because I invested on a domain name, and now I can't even find ways to earn from it. Any tips?

  For some time now, Microsoft has made available free, stripped-down, time-limited Virtual PC images for testing web apps in older versions of IE. The most recent version is here: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=11575 But the XP VPC image has now expired (14th Aug 2011), meaning one can no longer test IE 6 using this method. Have Microsoft made updated XP VPC images available? If not, have they commented on the situation? Do they provide any alternative method to test web apps in IE 6? Update As noted by @PleaseStand, as of 16th Aug 2011, Microsoft has made updated images available that expire on 17th November 2011.

  What is the "best" setup for robots.txt? I'm using the following permalink structure in Wordpress: /%category%/%postname%/. My robots.txt currently looks like this (copied from somewhere a long time ago): User-agent: * Disallow: /cgi-bin Disallow: /wp-admin Disallow: /wp-includes Disallow: /wp-content/plugins Disallow: /wp-content/cache Disallow: /wp-content/themes Disallow: /trackback Disallow: /comments Disallow: /category/*/* Disallow: */trackback Disallow: */comments I want my comments to be indext. So I can remove this, right? Do I want to disallow indexing categories because of my permalinkstructure? An article can have several tags and be in multiple categories. This may cause duplicates in google. How should I work around this? Would you change anything else here?

Does Submit to Index only submit new URL's so that previously indexed URL's still point to the older cached version until Google crawls specifically for new content on its own? Does Submit to Index have anything to do with Content Keywords or crawling new content being a previously indexed page or never been indexed page?

• How to SEO Optimize Javascript Image Loader?

  I am building an image-centric catalog website. It catalogs collectible gaming cards numbering 100,000+ pages. Competitor sites recieve millions of hits each month, so with the possibility of excessive traffic, I need to moderate image bandwidth while also optimizing for image SEO. I'm looking for some tips on doing so. Each page on the site features one card with appropriate tags and descriptions. There are however four images for each card - one on matte cardstock, one on foil cardstock, one digital, and one digital foil. In a world with unlimited bandwidth and no-wait page loads, I'd simply embed all four images on the main product page with titles, alt tags, and captions to rank them according to their version keyword. In reality a javascript gallery image loader seems appropriate. Here is a simplified example of my current code. Would this affect SEO in any way? Should I be doing anything differently? Note that I don't want to create a page for each image as I'd have to duplicate the card tags and descriptions on each one, diluting PR for the main page. • SEO blog Indexing: wordpress.com subdomain vs a registered domain?

  I've used WordPress for a few of my client's sites, mostly small businesses and eCommerce sites. I have found through Google Analytics as well as the All in One Webmaster plugin that when it comes to social media, using WordPress is a surefire way of getting your site indexed by Google and occasionally Bing and Yahoo. Since I am a heavy WP user, I'd like to contribute by registering a dot WordPress domain for my portfolio. When using a WP installation concurrently with a WP domain, e.g. myportfolio.wordpress.com, will the site be more or less likely to be indexed rather a generic myportfolio.com domain? I've seen mixed opinions where people seem to favor a WP domain for URL output where others say that it's a moot point, and that Google will not favor a WP domain over a dot com domain as long as your meta tags are updated and content is keyword optimized. I tend to disagree and believe a WP domain would more likely be indexed and output more URLs over an individual, laconic domain like myportfolio.com. Am I wrong?
