• Running MySQL as SYSTEM Service in Windows XP

  I have this strange problem where I create a database in MySQL and I need to restart mysqld but I can't seem to do it with info the MySQL docs. Then, I kill it from the Task Manager and I can't restart it. When I look at the process, it is run by the SYSTEM, rather than me. When I run mysqld it starts the process by me, not the SYSTEM. Am I shutting it down incorrectly? IS there a way to start this daemon as the SYSTEM?

• NTP configuration not recognized?

  I'm trying to configure NTP on my machine but it seems that the parameters I set are not being read by the system. Below is my /etc/ntp.conf file. (I applied the most basic configuration to eliminate other issues) server 10.45.68.47 server 127.0.0.1 After I set the above configuration, I restart the ntpd process by doing the following: service ntpd restart And then I get the following output: Shutting down ntpd: [ OK ] ntpd: Synchronizing with time server: [FAILED] Starting ntpd: [ OK ] Moreover, I can see the following in /var/etc/messages: Apr 2 10:54:07 hsystem1a ntpd[21067]: ntpd exiting on signal 15 Apr 2 10:54:07 hsystem1a ntpdate[21537]: can't find host ntpServer1 Apr 2 10:54:07 hsystem1a ntpdate[21537]: can't find host ntpServer2 Apr 2 10:54:07 hsystem1a ntpdate[21537]: no servers can be used, exiting So it seems that the ntpServer1 and the ntpServer2 are being read from somewhere instead of the IPs I configured in /etc/ntp.conf. • 32 bit programs can't access Internet in Windows 7 64 bit

  I recently got a new ASUS laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium pre-installed. It worked OK for a while but a couple of days ago, suddenly I couldn't access the Internet any more. After narrowing down the problem, I've reached the conclusion that what's happened is that 32 bit programs are suddenly not able to use the Internet, but 64 bit applications work just fine. Examples of programs that DON'T work any more: Google chrome Firefox Internet Explorer 8 World of Warcraft Examples of programs that DO work: Internet Explorer 8 (64 bit) ping (command line) nslookup (command line) ftp (command line) I'm pretty sure that those command line apps are 64 bit native. A re-install of Windows using the recovery partition on the laptop did fix the problem temporarily, but now it's back again. And I seem to be stuck between a rock and a hard place getting someone to take the responsibility for this; the vendor says to talk to ASUS, ASUS says it's a software issue, and Microsoft doesn't give support on OEM licenses... Does anyone know how to solve this issue?

• In Ubuntu I make changes to php.ini but nothing happens

  Hi, Apache with php works well, but none of the changes I make in php.ini have effect, I've even delete all the contents of the file, then restart Apache, and run phpinfo() and surprisingly everything continues working well. The file I'm editing is the one that appears in the phpinfo() like "Loaded Configuration File". (/etc/php5/apache2/php.ini) P.S. I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 and PHP 5.2 Thanks in advance. More Details: I'm restarting with sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart, I've also tried sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 stop, and then start, at restarting I get: Restarting web server apache2 apache2: Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.1.1 for ServerName ... waiting apache2: Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.1.1 for ServerName [ OK ] "which php" did not produce any results. • Replace gvimext.dll in Windows 8

  How can I get the "Edit with ... using tabs" functionality in gVim on Windows 8 (64-bit)? I'd like to swap out gVim's stock gvimext.dll for one that adds an "Edit with ... using tabs" option to Explorer's right-click context menu. On Windows 7 (64-bit) I used to be able to download the DLL and swap it in by following these instructions. However, I can't get it to work in Windows 8. The stock installation's context menu (sans "... using tabs") works fine (without a restart) ...but after replacing the DLL the gVim context menu options disappear and the gvimext.dll no longer seems to even load. (Windows 8 was restarted) if I again replace gvimext.dll with a backup of the stock DLL, the context menu options remain missing and the DLL still seems to fail to load (Windows 8 was restarted, again) If I re-install gVim, the context menu items return (even without a restart) What is the difference here between Windows 7 (where swapping DLL's works) and Windows 8 (where swapping DLL's fails)?

• Managing PHP processes on Windows 7 (with WAMP)

  Is there a way to manage (especially list and kill) long-running PHP processes on a Windows 7 system set up with WAMP? Every once in a while, I'll accidentally throw an infinite loop into a PHP process and want to kill it. Right now, all I can think to do is to restart all my WAMP services but sometimes the PHP processes manage to survive right through the restart, i.e., I still see them outputting to logs even after WAMP's restarted. And if the process isn't logging, then I have no way at all to know when/if it's been killed. Not to mention, this will wipe out everything I'm doing with WAMP, not just a single process. I don't seem to see anything relevant in the Windows Task Manager, but maybe I'm missing something.

• How to know what dll or services taskhost.exe is hosting?

  I have recently discover a new process in the task manager : taskhost.exe (maybe it was there before but i did not notice it) As the name implies, it seems to be used for running dll in background (like rundll32.exe). Is there a way to know which dll / services this process is hosting ? i would like to know for which purpose it is used and if there is some malware or not. I know it is possible to see which services svchost.exe process is hosting using process explorer utility. I have checked taskhost.exe threads and their stacks using process explorer, here is what i get : So it seems it is used for sound (winmm + playsndsrv). But there is also other things for which very few information is provided (ex : thread 1456, taskhost.exe as start address and nothing relevant can be found in stack (same for 1464, 2272 and so). So maybe it is not the right way to do.

• Unable to delete files in Temporary Internet Files folder

  I'm on Win7. I have a large number of of large .bin files, totaling 183GB, in my Temporary Internet Files folder. They all seem to come from video sharing sites like youtube. The files are invisible in Explorer even after allowing viewing of hidden files. The only way I can see them is by issuing "dir /fs" on the command line. Now when I try to delete them from the command line nothing happens. Trying to delete the whole folder from Explorer results in access denied because another process is using a file in the folder (IE is not running while I'm doing this). Trying to clear the folder using IE is also unsuccessful. How do I delete these files? How did they end up being there without being deleted by IE?

• How do I set Windows 7 as default OS but retain Windows 8 Boot screen?

  I am dual-booting between Windows 7 and Windows 8 on a test workstation, and typically reboot 3-4 times per day. If I set Windows 8 as the default OS, I get the Windows 8 graphical boot screen, which is easy to 'see' during the boot process, but if I set Windows 7 as the default OS, I only get the Windows 7 text-mode boot screen. While I mostly want Windows 7 (at the moment), on the occasions I restart to get to Windows 8, I often 'miss' seeing the text-only boot and have to restart twice. Is it possible to (and if so, how do I) configure this such that Windows 7 is the default OS, but still having the Windows 8 boot screen appear? Edit: Just so you guys know, I've tried setting Windows 7 as the default both from the Windows 8 Boot screen itself, and from within Windows 8 -- neither of these have the desired effect.

  I use Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit. At first I installed pgAdmin through Software Center. But it seemed old. So, I decided to uninstal it. Then I downloaded graphic installer for PostgresQL. sudo ./postgresql-9.2.1-1-linux-x64.run I was warned that a previous version of pgAdmin is found, it will be upgraded but I'll have to restart the server. Well, installation process worked. Then I turned out in terminal again. I restarted the server /etc/init.d$ sudo ./postgresql-9.2 restart /opt/PostgreSQL/9.2/pgAdmin3/bin$ ./pgadmin3 The answer is: The program 'pgadmin3' is currently not installed. So, I can't find my pgAdmin to launch it. Could you suggest me anything?

• Is it possible to COMPLETELY replace the start menu?

  I plan to make a replacement for the Windows 7 start menu, and I would like to know if that's even possible. I understand that the start menu is part of explorer.exe but I do not intend to replace explorer.exe. Is it possible to launch the replacement start menu by clicking the native start orb? Is it also possible to launch the replacement by pressing the Windows key or ctrl+esc ? Is the Windows key a macro for ctrl+esc ? or is it two different hotkeys that do the same thing? May I know if there is any software that do any one of these things?

• Stopping/Starting windows services

  I have four windows services which start up automatically when the machine starts. There after, I want to restart those services every 8 hours in a particular order. For eg. Stop s1,s2,s3,s4 and than restart them in some other order like s4,s3,s2,s1. The condition is that I should wait for each service to stop completely before I stop another one. I would want to write a .BAT or some script. Is it possible to define a CRON for 8 hours, this is not there in Advanced tasks ? Can I do it using windows scheduler ? • CentOS 6 init script doesn't work properly

  I'm setting up my ruby production server based on CentOS 6. I need a process called god (which is a process monitoring tool) to start at boot. I'm using an init script that I found here. Just as stated in the guide I ran: chkconfig --add god and then chkconfig --level 345 god on After this if I run "service god start|restart" everything works. It loads the available configurations and brings up the related processes (if they are not running). Problem is it doesn't work at boot. If I reboot the system, then I do "ps -aux | grep god". At this point "god" is running but apparently it didn't load the configuration files. If i run again service god restart, it loads everything without problems. What am I doing wrong?

  I configured network bonding on two machine with centos 5.5. Bonding works well, but the problem is default gateway: it is not configured! I follow this tutorial. I added GATEWAY in both (and either) /etc/sysconfig/network and /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-bond0. But, when I restart network (or server) there is no default gateway (route command). This is ip route ls output after network restart: 10.0.0.0/16 dev bond0 proto kernel scope link src 10.0.0.88 Where is my mistake?

• Created a new zone in DNS manager - can't get site bindings to work in iis 7

  Firstly I would like to say that I am a noob when it comes to DNS, I am a web developer and I am trying to setup an intranet site for a charity. I have windows server 2008 and I installed both iis 7 and dns manager. In IIS I have this binding that works - Type: http:// IP Address: 192.168.1.9 Port: 80 Host name: My host name is empty and when I try to navigate to this website on the network, the http code is 200 and the page renders. Now if I try Host name of test.organization.intranet Internet explorer says "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" and the server response is aborted. In DNS manager I created a new forward lookup zone of organization.intranet I did this through the configure a dns server wizard and I created a host (A) with the same IP as the one being used in IIS. The full Host name is test.organization.intranet but it doesn't work. Maybe I am missing something obvious because it's not an area of IT that I know very well, but I am stuck for why I can't get it to work.

• The application Finder can't be opened. -10810

  Hi Guys, I am getting an error as shown in the screenshot. This started happening after I updated my Mac OS X from 10.6.5 to 10.6.6. Problem is that Finder stops working 5 mins after the restart and all the other aplications including Xcode 3.2.5, iPhone simulator, safari,etc stops working. • Unable to delete a directory from NTFS drive: "Access is denied"

  I'm running Windows XP Pro x64 SP2. I have a directory on an NTFS drive that was created by a Maven build. A subsequent build attempted to delete this directory and failed. I now get the error "Access is denied" whenever I try to do anything with that directory: change to it, delete it, rename it. This happens both in Windows Explorer and from a command prompt. The properties dialog in Windows Explorer doesn't even contain the Security tab. I created the directory, so I don't think this is truly a permissions issue. I've occasionally had this error happen in the past is well. I believe the error is misleading, but the question is: what is the real problem and how do I fix it?

• How do I force Windows to play sound through the speakers only when a USB headset isn't connected?

  I'm using a speaker set connected through the green audio jack and a headset which I connect through USB. My problem is that every time I connect/disconnect my headset, I have to go through a lot of settings/restart some programs to make the sound go through the speakers again. What I want is to have audio play through the headset when it's connected, but if I disconnect the headset, I want the audio to automatically play through the speakers. For example, if I connect/disconnect the headset while listening to music, I have to restart the application to make the music play through the correct speaker/headset, and it shouldn't be that inconvenient. (I found this somewhat relevant topic, but the problem is that it doesn't really give an answer. (Also, it is 2 years old.))
