• how to install daemontools (supervise) on centos 5?

  I'd like to use supervise to monitor httpd, mysqld and hudson processes on Centos 5. When any of these processes go down I'd like to use a tool to automatically restart them. I've read and heard about supervise, but couldn't find a way to install it on centos. Can anyone help me with that? Any other tools are also good, as long as they can be easily installed on centos 5 and allow me to automatically restart httpd, mysqld, hudson. Thanks for your help!

• Likeliness of obtaining same IP address after restarting a router

  My actual objective is to simulate logged IPs of web-site users who are all assumed to use dynamically assigned IPs. There will be two kinds of users: good users who only change IP when the ISP assignes a new one bad users who will restart their router to obtain a new IP So what I would like to understand is what assignment mechanics are usually at work here deciding from what pool of IPs one is chosen and whether the probability is uniformly distributed. I know there is no definite and global answer as this process can be adjusted be the ISP but maybe there is something like a technological frame and common process that allows some plausible assumptions. UPDATE: A bad user will restart the router as often as possible if necessary. So here the central question is how many IP changes on average are necessary to end up with a previously used IP.

  I'm using Process Explorer to monitor my windows server while it reconstructs some data. It's primarily a CPU intensive process, but I want to make sure it's not swapping. How can I tell if it is using Process Explorer? My initial guess is in the System Information window, it's Paging File Write Delta. Yes? No? I'm an idiot? *Screenshot is not of the server... just an example.

• Upon clicking on a file, excel opens but not the file itself

  Platform: Windows XP SP2, Excel 2007 Problem description: Upon clicking on a file in Windows Explorer (file is either .xls or .xlsx) Excel 2007 opens, but does not open the file itself. I need either to click on a file again in Windows Explorer or open it manually with File/Open ... from Excel. Does anyone know what could cause this rather strange behaviour ? The old versions of Excel worked "normally" ... i.e. upon clicking on a file, an Excel would open along with the file. Please, help !

• Changing keyboard layout for login screen on Mac OS X

  I have a Mac Mini with Mac OS X Lion. Basically I am a developer and practiced coding with DVORAK keyboards. So I changed my keyboard layout to DVORAK and I'm working with it. I'm using the admin user on my Mac Mini. When I restart my computer, during login, the layout is changed to QWERTY and it's hard to type the password. It happens only for the admin user though. If I create the another user and set the layout as DVORAK and restart, that user has the DVORAK keyboard for login. Note: I have a QWERTY keyboard, I'm only changing the layout in the keyboard preferences. So, to summarize, how can I get the DVORAK keyboard layout for the admin login as well?

• Unable to edit/delete/move /etc/my.cnf - Permission denied

  I am trying to edit /etc/my.cnf as root user via ssh and I get following error while trying to save it I ma making changes to my.cnf as I want to tweak some values in my.cnf to meet Magento requirement like changing key_buffer_size= to higher value (128M). I assigned the value 128M to key_buffer_size= and tried to save it and then got an error. "Error writing /etc/my.cnf: Permission denied" I cant even restart MySQL successfully. [root@flourish ~]# service mysqld restart Stopping mysqld: [ OK ] MySQL Daemon failed to start. Starting mysqld: [FAILED] I can even delete or replace it with the fresh one. I tried uninstalling MySQL and re-installing but nothing worked. Permission -rw-r--r-- and Owner/Group root/root I hope there is some answer to this problem.

• Windows Server 2008 R2 Upgrade via Remote Desktop

  Is it possible to do an in-place upgrade of Windows Server 2008 R2 to Windows Server 2012 using only Remote Desktop? My plan is to extract WS 2012 installation iso file to C:\WS2012 and run the setup. After restart Remote Desktop connection will be lost, but will it be restored later? Is setup going to automatically install everything, restart, run WS 2012 and start listening for RDP connections? Server is rented and I would like to save the KVM fee. I read here that it's possible to upgrade WS 2008 to WS 2008 R2 like that. Thanks!

• How to find spyware dll launched using svchost.exe

  This weekend I found my PC was possibly infected by some virus or spyware. There is one "svchost.exe -k netsvcs" in my task manager, and it is running under my user name, rather than SYSTEM accounts. There is already another same process with same command line options under SYSTEM account. This user account svchost.exe consistently consumes 50% CPU (1 of 2 cores of my CPU). In Process Explorer, I can see it is started by explorer.exe, instead of services.exe. However, I failed to find its real service dll place in registry or disk. Does anyone know how to find this malicious program?

• PS/2 mouse and USB keyboard combination with Windows 7 isn't possible?

  I have a PS/2 keyboard, and a PS/2 mouse - I'm using an Ubuntu/Win7 (x86) combo. Yesterday I replaced the keyboard with a new USB one. Until a restart everything was fine, but after it, the cursor couldn't be moved. I opened the device manager, and it displayed Code 10 - This device will not start. If I place my PS/2 keyboard back, restart, then the mouse will work fine. I tried the USB keyboard, PS/2 mouse combo in Ubuntu, and it works there - so it is a Windows-only problem. I downloaded the mouse's driver (it's a Netscroll 200 Laser) - nothing changed. Please help me! Thanks!

• USB connection issue

  Currently Im facing an issue when Im trying to connect any usb flash drive to my pc. ok, below is what happens to me: 1) I can connect usb keyboard and mouse without any issue. 2) however when i connect usb flash drive, there are 2 situations that are occuring randomly a) there is no usb drive mount in my computer, when device manager is checked, it shows error code 10, but is shown in disk management. b) my computer will have usb drive mounted, but when I click on it, it is empty. on right click the properties, the disk space show 0. (there are files within the usb) what i have done is: 1) run CCleaner to repair the registry, restart and try, but still not working. 2) uninstall the drive in device manager, restart and try, but still not working. 3) tried the port that connects mouse and keyboard, but does not work. anyone who experienced these problems before please guide me. any suggestions or solutions would be greatly appreciated.   Domain controller failed to restore using windows backup tools One Issue: One 08 R2 domain controller with fully daily backup(only one controller in this company) is out of services due to hardware issue. The below two methods i tried to recover to the new purchasing server,but it is fail. 1)First Method: Using the windows 2008 R2 CD to boot and carry out recover from backup. Everything is OK, but after reboot it will come out blue screen and restart again. 2)Second Method: a)Install the OS in this new server b) Reboot the server to DSRM. c)Using the Windows Backup Tools to restore the system states only After reboot, it will come out the blue screen error and restart again. I know this is may be the different hardware issue, but how to resolve? Or can we only restore the AD services not whole system status? Any suggestion?

• Tomcat / Railo stop responding with no error output

  This is going to sound very vague and I'm sure it will be voted down for not giving enough information however I don't really have any to give as you will see. We have an AWS instance running Amazon Linux, Apache, Tomcat and Railo and from time to time the Tomcat/Railo simply stops responding to requests and there are no errors output in the catalina.out file or any of the other log files in the Tomcat logs directory. When I issue the command to restart Tomcat/Railo the restart scripts sits there for a while then says that Tomcat has not responded so it has killed it off and then it starts up again and everything is fine until it happens again, anything from a couple of minutes to a couple of days later. I have done my best to check other logs on the server but have found no messages at all to indicate why Tomcat/Railo has given up and stopped responding. Can anyone suggest any reason why it might be doing this and / or any other log file(s) that we could check to see what is happening. Thanks. Andrew.

• PC Speaker sounds when machine locks up.

  What would cause my PC speaker to sound a low frequency continuous tone as my system locks up? Generally what will happen is I'll notice the application I'm using will stop responding but explorer will be partially responsive, then after a few more actions explorer stops responding, and the last click will cause the pc speaker to emit a low constant tone as the machine locks up completely. The only resolve at that point is to restart. Its not a thermal issue, I'm reading the cpu, and hdd temps with software and hardware monitors. AV and malware scans come up clean. I've swapped out my ram, reseated all my components. Used sfc with no results. chkdisk locks up at 3% and defragmenting does the same, but I can read the drive without trouble (I know this as I've done av/malware scans and I also backed everything up since this started happening) I'm mostly just interested to learn, if anyone knows, why the pc speaker would sound during the lock up. windows xp sp2

• Why does the task pictogram flashes instead of opening the program?

  Sometimes, when I select a click a program on the Windows 7 taskbar it won't appear (it doesn't gain focus and remains behind other open windows), and the icon will flash and turn orange. This happens reasonably frequently, and I've had it happen on two separate Windows installs on different machines. It just happened now and the only programs I have with active windows are Chrome, WMP and Explorer (2). It happened when I clicked Explorer. Once this has happened to one window, it affects all windows, and the only way I can switch between programs is by finding the window manually or using Windows+Tab. The only way I've come across to get the computer to snap out of this annoying behaviour is to restart the machine. Is there a way of stopping it?   We have an SBS2008 installation, which has a backup task. It creates a backup twice a day onto external storage. This worked for a long time. But the backup can't be performed now. The last valid backup was before some Exchange updates, SBS Update Rollup 8 and SharePoint updates were installed. The only error in Event Logs is for VSS (the Volume Shadow Service), which I only have in German. Things I've done: restart the server chkdsk /r /f for all volumes restart the VSS service googling manual backup Nothing's helped. How can I set up the backup again?

  Ever since we updated from SP1 RU4 to SP2 RU4 we have noticed that our BES devices will simply stop receiving email. This has occurred at least 5 times in the past few weeks. Today, while speaking with RIM support (a T3 contract), they said that they have reports of sporadic connectivity issues from some BES users. This has been occurring with Exchange 2010 SP2 RU4, and have no public information to give us. We were able to temporarily get things running by doing any or all of the following Restart the BES server Recreate the MAPI profile (deleted the keys in the registry) Restart the CAS servers Wait it out (2 hours) What other options should I take to resolve this issue?

• Getting BootMgr not found errors repeatedly on Win7 x64

  So here is the basic configuration of the box: Primary RAID 1 (Mirror, Bootable): 2x 300GB WD SATA drives AMD Phenom Quad Core x64 @2.2 ASUS M3N78 Pro Board 4GB RAM Win 7 Ultimate Additionally, this box is a Host OS for several CentOS Boxes via VirtualBox. The box runs like a champ but, for whatever reason, everytime I restart the machine I get a BootMgr not found error when the box tries to boot. I pop in my Win DVD, select 'Repair Windows' then 'Fix Start Up Problems' and everything works fine...once. When I restart the box again I have to go back through this process. Any ideas on what is going on?

• CD-R suddenly unreadable?

  I have a CD-R which has worked fine for a good while. All of a sudden, Windows can no longer read its data. It's not scratched, it's clean and Windows can detect the disk and usage of space on it. But whenever I attempt to access the data stored: Explorer crashes Or after 5-10 mins of trying to read it, it opens up and just shows a desktop.ini file in Explorer. This happens on multiple machines. Any ideas? Is there a way to recover the data? For example - some sector by sector recovery software if any exist for CD's?

  I have two servers which is Ubuntu 12.04 and Ubuntu 14.04. When I use Ubuntu 14.04 in my new server and enabled the php-fpm log file found under /etc/php5/fpm/php-fpm.conf that reads as follows: error_log = /var/log/php5-fpm.log I noticed that most of the log that I found in Ubuntu 12.04 is not written in 14.04. For example, if I restart php5-fpm in my Ubuntu 12.04, a restart log is being written, however, this does not happen in 14.04. Another log which I missed in 14.04 are the following: [23-Aug-2014 16:23:03] NOTICE: [pool web42] child 118098 exited with code 0 after 12983.480191 seconds from start [23-Aug-2014 16:23:03] NOTICE: [pool web42] child 147653 started [23-Aug-2014 17:27:31] WARNING: [pool web8] child 76743, script '/var/www/mysite.com/web/wp-comments-post.php' (request: "POST /wp-comments-post.php") executing too slow (12.923022 sec), logging I really wanted to have this kind of log so I will know the length of time a slow script has executed. Does anyone know if there are other settings in Ubuntu 14.04 that I need to change in addition to /etc/php5/fpm/php-fpm.conf?

  Hi, In early January 2011, we completely switched to Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7. On our domain controller set up a DFS is that the users as "Z: drive" is displayed. The DFS was it in the same way during our time with Windows Server 2003 R2 and Windows XP. At the time it has always worked without problems. Since Windows 7, we have sometimes the case that when a user accesses to the Z drive, the Explorer will return to the workplace without a user can do. After two to three trials of the Explorer remains in the network drive and the users work. This phenomenon occurs irregularly and you can not restrict exactly why. In the event log at the time no obvious entries are logged. Does anyone know the problem or has had similar experiences? I am grateful for any help. Greetings, sY!v3Rs

• Windows 7 strange boot issue

  Recently I installed an SSD drive, its now my primary boot drive (OCZ Vertex Turbo 60GB). I'm running Win 7 (64bit). Now I am not sure exactly where the fault lies, but when I do a restart from within Windows, the computer will boot and enter into the loading windows portion, however won't progress beyond there. My solution is to manually hit the reset switch, and then when it boots it enters into a windows menu that offers a start up repair or start windows normally. I select start windows normally, and then it boots fine. I am not entirely sure why I can't just restart the computer from windows normally though. The SSD drive works perfectly, and not even sure if it is the cause to this problem. Any ideas on this?

Once I need to restart the service all those machines are connecting at the same time. So I changed sysctl net.ipv4.tcp_syncookies to 0 because the endpoints to not handle tcp syn cookies correctly. Finally I restarted my network to get the changes in production Next time I had to restart the service, the following message was logged TCP: Possible SYN flooding on port 59380. *Dropping request*. Check SNMP counters. How can I prevent the system for doing such actions? All necessary counter measures are done by iptables...

• web sites leaking memory? IIS 7.5 Windows server 2008 R2

  I have several web sites on my windows 2008 server that have been working flawlessly for over a year. Just a few days ago I ran into an issue where my server stopped serving up pages on some of these sites for no apparent reason. I dug into it a little more today and I see that some of my sites (they're all asp.net mvc 3.0 sites), are consuming over 460MB of memory. Like I said, this just started the other day after a very long period of time of no issues at all. I have two questions: 1) is there a way to throttle how much memory is consumed by the w3wp process before I can force it to restart (restart the app pool for a particular site) so that it doesn't keep hogging all of the memory? 2) any ideas what could have caused this to start happening?
