  • htaccess and htpasswd trouble

    This is the first time that I have ever tried working with .htpasswd and .htaccess files, so please point out my childish works. I have my apache document root set to /www/ on my debian server. Inside it, there's a folder named Logs/ which I want to restrict access using a htpasswd. I created my htpasswd file using the shell's htpasswd command. And this is the result: > user:<encoded password here> > hjp:<encoded password here> > hjpotter92:<encoded password here> I put this file named .htaccess inside /www/. The Logs/ has following htaccess file in it: > AuthName "Restricted Area" > AuthType Basic > AuthUserFile /www/.htpasswd > AuthGroupFile /dev/null > require valid-user This was again created using an online tool(I forgot its name/link, and can't search the browser-history now). The problem, as it might've already struck you is that I am experiencing no change on my Logs folder access. The folder is still accessible to everyone. I am running apache as root user(if that matters/helps). Please help/guide me. I've tried reading some htaccess guides and have followed some of older SO questions, but still haven't figured out a way to restrict access to Logs folder with a password.

    Today I am bashing around with nasm again… some useful things I found… Set the current working directory of gvim to the current file path I have found setting the current working directory of gvim to the file location is very useful, especially if you are wanting to use commands in gvim to run your compiled code. It can be done by typing in the following in the command mode in gvim… cd %:p:h Once you have set it, you can use the ! to run commands you would normally run in the dos shell.. e.g. !dir Compiling code to make an executable There are three thing you need to specify to compile a basic file in name, they are… The output file format The output file name The source file name An example of this would be the following (where you have a file called temp.asm which is the source file) nasm –f bin temp.asm –o temp.com Output file format The –f specifies the output file format (in this case a binary file). To get a list of the available output file formats you can type nasm –hf (for my installation bin is the default, in which case I can omit it) Output file name This is just the name you want the compiled file to be called. For windows machines I specify .com as my default format.

    I am a programmer from China. And I like to use English words to name my files and folders Whether it is for work or life. For example, suck as Movie, Work, QtProjects, Music and so on.And I keep the habit of initial the first letter for file name or folder name in Windows. But now I work on Ubuntu, and I found that all file name and folder name are lowercase in addition to the default folder such as Music, Movie and so on. And then I realize that in Linux world, most peoloe like to use all lowercase to name their files and folders for two reasons (1. Linux is Case sensitive. 2. It is fast for shell command.). And after work, when I switch from Linux to Windows, I confuse to use all lowercase or the first letter uppercase style to name my files in Windows. I'm caught in a dilemma. I think that all lowercase is more efficiency but the first letter uppercase is more readable. I thought for a long time and want to come up with a good answer to blance the two style name conversion. But I failed. I want to ask you that how you balance the uppercase or lowercase habbit in Windows, Mac, Linux between work and personal life style? Thank you very much! (My current solution is that when I am in Linux, I use all lowercase for files and folders, but when I am in Windows and Mac OS X, I couldn't find a good reason to convince me to use all lowercase ( I think in Windows and Mac OS X, the first letter uppercase style for me is more readable and beautiful).

  • Ubuntu 12.04 takes too long to boot

    I've recently encountered the following error message: mount: mounting /dev/disk/by-uuid/3f7f5cd9d-6ea3-4da7-b5ec-**** on /root failed: Invalid argument mount: mounting /sys on /root/sys failed: No such file or directory mount: mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: No such file or directory mount: mounting /sys on /root/sys failed: No such file or directory mount: mounting /proc on /root/proc failed: No such file or directory Target file system doesn't have /sbin/init. No init found. Try passing init= bootarg. Busybox v1.18.5 (Ubuntu 1:1.18.5-1ubuntu4) built-in shell (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands. (initramfs) _ I run sudo fsck /dev/sda2 which is the Ubuntu ext4 root partition via LiveCD. It checked and fixed the file system. The next time I boot, Ubuntu started to load with the Ubuntu logo and the dots underneath for several hours (with the mouse pointer active on the screen), I even let the computer on overnight but still it did not successfully boot or got to the login screen in the morning. I booted again with the LiveCD and checked the NTFS partitions with ntfsfix and again the NTFS partitions was checked and fixed successfully. I also edited my fstab and commented out the lines that auto-mounts the NTFS partitions. The next time I boot, it took almost 20 minutes for Ubuntu to get to the login screen, after typing the password it took an additional 10 minutes for Ubuntu to get to the desktop. On the desktop, it take several minutes to open any program, displaying the Dash alone takes 5 minutes! Is there a fix for this without having to reinstall Ubuntu? I don't see or get any errors, Ubuntu is just taking too long to boot and to run programs. Please help!

    The e-ink display, network connectivity, and low-power consumption of Kindle ebook readers make them a perfect candidate for an infrequently refreshed high-visibility display–like a weather display. Read on to see how to hack a Kindle to serve up the local weather. Tinker and hardware hacker Matt Petroff hacked his Kindle to accept input from a web server and then, graciously and in the spirit of geeky projects everywhere, shared his source code. He explains the heart of the project: The server side of the system uses shell and Python scripts to convert weather forecast data into an image for the Kindle. The scripts first download and parse forecast data from NOAA via the National Digital Forecast Database XML/SOAP Service. After parsing the data, the data then needs to be converted into an image. This is accomplished by preprocessing a specially crafted SVG file to insert temperatures, forecast symbols, and days of the week. This SVG is then rendered as a PNG using rsvg-convert and converted to a grayscale, no transparency color space as required by the Kindle using pngcrush. Finally, it is copied to a public location on the web server. The Kindle is set to refresh twice a day (you could easily tweak the scripts for a more frequent refresh) and displays the forecast as seen in the photo above–with crisp and easy to read text and icons.   • NFS users getting a laggy GUI expierence

    I am setting up a system (ubuntu 12.04) that uses ldap, pam, and autofs to load users and their home folders from a remote server. One of the options for login is sitting down at the machine and starting a GUI session. Programs such as chormium (browser) that preform many read/write operations in the ~/.cache and ~/.config files are slowing down the GUI experience as well as putting strain of the NFS server that is causing other users to have problems. Ubuntu had the handy-dandy XDG_CONFIG_HOME and XDG_CACHE_HOME variables that can be set to change the default location of .cache and .config from the home folder to somewhere else. There are several places to set them, but most of them are not optimal. /etc/environment pros: will work across all shells cons: cannot use variables like $USER so that you can't make users have different new locations for .cache and .config. Every users' new location would be the same directory. /etc/bash.bashrc pros: $USER works, so you can place them in different folders cons: only gets run for bash compatible shells ~/.pam_environment pros: works regardless of shell cons: cannot use system variables (like $USER), has it's own syntax, and has to be created for every user

    I have mostly worked on hardware testing in my professional career and would like to get onto the software development side. I thought working on a practically usable project will help motivate me and help acquire some skills. I have decided to build a test plan management tool for the QA team I work in (We use excel sheets!). The test plan management tool should be browser based and should support this: There would be many test plans, each test plan having test sets, test sets having test cases and test cases having instructions, attachments and Pass/fail status marking and bug info in case of failure. It should also have an export to excel option. I have a visual picture of the tool I am looking to build but I don't have enough experience to figure our where to start. My current programming skills are limited to C and shell programming and I want to pick up python. What tools (programming language, database and anything else?) would you recommend for me to get this done? Also what are the key concepts in the recommended programming language that I should focus on to build a browser based tool like this?

  • Web dev/programmer with 4.5 yrs experience. Better for career: self-study or master's degree? [closed]

    I'm a 28 year-old web developer/programmer with 4.5 years of experience, and I'm looking to jump-start my career. I'm trying to decide between self-study and a 1-year master's program in CS at a top school. I'm currently making 65K in a high cost-of-living area that is NOT a hot spot for technology firms. I code almost exclusively in Ruby/Rails, PHP/CodeIgniter, SQL, and JavaScript. I've slowly gained proficiency with Git. Roughly half the time I am architecting/coding, and half the time I am pounding out HTML/CSS for static brochureware sites. I'd like to make more more money while doing more challenging/interesting work, but I don't know where to start. I have an excellent academic record (math major with many CS credits, 3.9+ GPA), GRE scores, and recommendations, so I am confident that I could be admitted to a great CS master's program. On the other hand, there is the tuition and opportunity cost to consider. I feel like there are a number of practical languages/tools/skills worth knowing that I could teach myself - shell scripting, .NET, Python, Node.js, MongoDB, natural language processing techniques, etc. That said, it's one thing to read about a subject and another thing to have experience with it, which structured coursework provides. So, on to the concrete questions: What programming skills/knowledge should I develop to increase my earning potential and make me competitive for more interesting jobs? Will a master's degree in CS from a top school help me develop the above skills/knowledge, and if so, is it preferable to self-study (possibly for other reasons, e.g., the degree's value as a credential)?

  • Learning curve for web development

    At the moment our team has a huge challenge, we're being asked to deliver a new GUI for an embedded controller. The deadline is very tight and is set on April 2013. Our team is very diverse, some people are on the level of functional programming (mostly C), others (including myself) have mastered object oriented programming (C++, C#). We built a prototype for Android, although it has its quirks, it is mostly just OO. For the future there is a wish to support multiple platforms (Windows, Android, iOS). In my opinion a HTML5 app with a native app shell is the way to go. When gathering more information on the frameworks to use etc., it became obvious to me a paradigm shift is needed. None of us have a web background so we need to learn from the ground up. The shift from functional to OO took us about 6 months to become productive (and some of the early subsystems were rewritten because they were a total mess). Can we expect the learning curve to be similar? Can this be pulled off with a web app? (My feeling says it will already be hard to pull off as a native app which is at the edge of our comfort zone).

  • Unable to log in due to freeze, occasional error message

    I'm new to Ubuntu. And I have some problems now. I downloaded Ubuntu 11.10 and burned it onto a CD. Then I load it in my conputer, it's easy. But when I finished those and restarted the computer, the problem comes: After I choose to log in the Ubuntu system,the screen stays in pink, and it can't jump into (about 30 min), and then I have no choices but to press Ctrl+Alt+Del to reboot. Another time I choose Ubuntu to log in, it shows on the screen that "BusyBox v1.18.4 ...... built-in shell ...... initramfs". However the Live CD works very well. What’s more, there is a Windows 7 partition on the hard drive. (Windows 7 is also okay.) But I leave more than 20GB on the hard drive to Ubuntu. When I installed Ubuntu, I only made two partitions (swap and /). I don’t know where the problems happened and how to deal with them. And I hope someone can help me out with the troubles.

  • How can I disable the purple bootloader splash at boot?

    This question has been answered before, but neither of the methods in the accepted answer worked for me on 11.10. First I tried editing in /etc/default/grub, and then running sudo update-grub. But after that I still got a blank, plain, purple screen while the kernel is loading. The screen has no boot options, and it obscures those dmesg that I want to see going in the terminal. Next I tried removing the plymouth-theme-*, but that just broke my gnome-shell theme looks, and the purple screen still remains.   • Google Chrome with strange behavior

    I'm former Chromium-browser user, but after not upgrading the PPA for 2 months, I switched to Google Chrome browser yesterday. Everything is okay, except some strange behavior on some pages and crashing after loading "chrome://" configuration pages. The best known website with strange behavior is youtube, there is a picture what I see: When I open user menu in top right corner, it crashes that way and even after closing the menu, some parts of menu stay display. You may say it's Youtube problem, no, I have this problem at least on three other websites, here it is on Imgur: The problem isn't for the whole side, sometimes it happens from the middle of the screen. The interesting part is that it happens everytime in the same distance from the right border. When I check the DOM elements with the Developer tool, the overlay which shows element's position is rendered how it should be. What is more, if there is anchor after the crashed area, it works after clicking on it. Selecting text in crashed page is impossible.   • How do I list all the relation variables and debug them interactively?

    I'm writing a charm that requires a mysql database, I found from looking at other charms that this (below) is how I get the info about the database: user=`relation-get user` password=`relation-get password` mysqlhost=`relation-get private-address` But I just found that from reading the wordpress charm example, is there a way to show all the relation variables that I can use? Also, while debugging my db-relation-changed script, I wanted to ssh into my host and interactively run those commands, for example relation-get user, but it didn't work. I resorted to having to restart everything and use juju log to print them out. This wasted a lot of time. Is there a way to print out these relations, either from my dev box or from the instance running my charm?     When upgrading from Ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10 the distribution upgrade program freezes after it notifies me of a change in /etc/apparmor.d/usr.bin.mysqld and asks me to keep the old file or accept the new changes (I accepted them). The terminal says: Configuration file `/etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.mysqld' ==> Modified (by you or by a script) since installation. ==> Package distributor has shipped an updated version. What would you like to do about it ? Your options are: Y or I : install the package maintainer's version N or O : keep your currently-installed version D : show the differences between the versions Z : start a shell to examine the situation The default action is to keep your current version. *** usr.sbin.mysqld (Y/I/N/O/D/Z) [default=N] ? y Installing new version of config file /etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.mysqld ... The program hasn't done anything after this for about 2 hours now and I have no idea what I should do at this point. Can I quit the program and restart it? Or is there another action I should take?     How can I get the 3D transitions working on Impress? I got a presentation coming soon, and as a requirement of the course the professor want us to use transitions on our "Power Point" chapter, obviously I have been using LibreOffice in every exercise but the native transitions are kind of lame, so when I install the newer version of Ubuntu, always install the extra package to the transitions - I had installed the 3D package: libreoffice-ogltrans 1:3.4.3-3ubuntu2 In previous versions of Ubuntu and worked perfectly, but for some reason is not working in this release. I got LibreOffice 3.4.3, Ubuntu Oneiric Ocelot (11.10) and my hardware is not relevant because I had it working before on previous releases. I know is not critical, but for my class is a pretty important deal, and can be a perfect opportunity to show the class that the cool stuff are not only in Windows.   • VMware Player 5.0 or VMware Workstation 9.0 after upgrade to Ubuntu 12.10

    The upgrade process Upgrading Ubuntu 12.04 to latest version 12.10 - aka Quantal Quetzal - is straight forward and you only need to follow the offical upgrade instructions. Short version on the console looks like this: sudo do-release-upgrade This will update the repository entries, and start the upgrade process. After some minutes or hours of download and installation, you have to reboot your system once to get the new kernel loaded. As time of writing, I'm on '3.5.0-17-generic'. And as with any modification of the kernel version, you have to compile the necessary kernel modules to get VMware Player or Workstation up and running. Usually, this happens the first time you try start your VMware software and that's it. Well, again not so this time. Getting the kernel patch Luckily, the community over VMware is very active and you can get a new kernel patch in the online forums here. Get the download and put in a folder have write permissions. Then you extract the archive on the console like so: tar -xjvf vmware9_kernel35_patch.tar.bz2 Then you change into the newly created folder: cd vmware9_kernel3.5_patch/ And you execute the available shell script as root (superuser) like so: sudo ./patch-modules_3.5.0.sh This will stop any running instances of VMware software, patches the source files and runs the compile process for your active environment. This might take some time depending on your machine, and once completed you can start VMware Player or Workstation as previously. In case that you are going to apply the patch again, the script will simply quit with the following output: /usr/lib/vmware/modules/source/.patched found. You have already patched your sources. Exiting You might remove the .patched file in case that you upgraded/changed your kernel and you need to apply the patch again.   • Ubuntu 12.10 and nVidia drivers don't like each other?

    I decided to upgrade both my computers from Precise to Quantal. What a mistake that was. My laptop has a nVidia GT 330M card, while the desktop has an nVidia 9600 GT. In both cases everything goes great as long as I use the Nouveau driver (ugh!). Can't really play games (Amnesia... and hoping for Steam Beta participation...), even though it's OK for work. Now, ever since 9.04 or so, I just installed nvidia-current and all just worked. Since 12.10, after installing nVidia drivers, Unity won't start at all (hangs with only the wallpaper displayed, no cursor or widgets), Gnome Shell is permanently in fallback mode. Now, I have tried on both computers, with multiple clean installs on Ubuntu (two separate downloads, just in case), one from Ubuntu Gnome Remix. And additionally, Fedora 17, which seems to suffer from the same issue. Tried all nVidia driver suggestions available in Software Sources, and even compiled the drivers myself. I tried several versions of the driver to exclude an issue with the newest one. In my frustration, I have switched to Windows (which, ironically, "just works" with my hardware), but still hold a twin OS configuration on the desktop and would like to use Ubuntu again. So, can anyone point me to where the issue might lie?

    I am looking for some advice on the next step to take in development of my programming skills. I was directed here when asking this question on Stack Overflow. What I know already Have a solid grasp of xhtml, xml, php, javascript, MySQL, actionscript. Have a working knowledge of vb, and have a slight grasp of java from tinkering with a minecraft server. Some brief exposure to the Unreal Engine in college. Some skills with sql server, ms sql, office integration, etc. Also some knowledge of Asterix and PBX/VOIP. Been coding off and on since the age of 8 but I have no computer science education aside from what I have taught myself or learned from work/freelance. I work in OSX mostly, but can use/troubleshoot windows and ubuntu fluently also. Decent with both UNIX and DOS CLI. What I'm considering I'm looking to learn a scripting language to build web apps, help streamline my home server that I am building and run shell scripts. Being able to help code games later is a big plus. My Question Between java, ruby, perl, and python, which would be the best investment of my time considering what I already know and what direction I would like to take my skillset? What are good resources for your suggested direction? Thanks in advance.
