• what can I do with an old but working PC [closed]

  I have an old Dell optiplex GX240 on Pentium 4 1.8Ghz and 256MB Ram (or was it 512MB). It's still in working condition but it's getting slow for me and i wanted to optimize it. I just want that old box to be usable even for simple desktop use (email, surfing, chat). I also have to note that my parents prefer use it over a laptop for some reason. Treat it as a "box-type netbook". unlike the other threads that they all prefer sending away or use as file server, firewall and that, i am looking for suggestions on how to keep it usable as the main PC. any suggestions? OS perhaps?

• Is an eee-pc with an Atom N550 dual core OK for Rails 3 development?

  I'm buying an Asus eee-pc 1015PEM and hope to do test-driven Rails 3 development on it. Is the CPU fast enough or too painfully slow for this? I plan on installing Ubuntu. I currently develop on a 11 inch Macbook Air 2010 model. It works fine as a Rails development machine. But for some reason I'm drawn to developing on a cheap little netbook. I don't use any IDE's, and my development workflow is mostly switching between Vim, Gnu Screen, and bash.

• Speed up file access on home network

  I have 2 PCs (Windows 7 Ultimate) and a Mac running Windows 7 using vmware fusion on my home network tied together using WRN1000 NETGEAR Router On one of the PC's I have a set of file (MYOB .myo). These use a data source to access the data in the files. Operations (reading,writing) to the .myo on the PC which hosts the files is fine but the other 2 it is painfully slow/unreliable and I am wondering what I can do to speed this up. Some ideas I have are 1. Turn off the Windows firewall on all the windows installations on the home network 2. Buy another router. Specifically a router which I can connect a USB flash drive on the back where I can put the .myo files and all the PC can access the files from the USB flash drive on the router (does this speed things up?) Any advice greatly appreciated on how I can speed up this access to data

• Best memory-efficient web browser for Ubuntu?

  I've installed Ubuntu 10.10 on an old laptop with only 756 MB of RAM, Pentium M 1.6 processor. I'm using Google Chrome 11.0 (dev channel) for web browsing, and it appears to be using up most of my memory and processor time. Does anyone know of a better browser than Chrome on Ubuntu, for an older computer like mine? I'm new to Ubuntu, so there may also be tweaks I can make to my existing system to have it perform better. But right now it's pretty slow when I've got ~5-10 tabs open. Related question: memory-efficient web-browser

  Does anyone know how to delete Time Machine in Mac OS X 10.6.4? Before answering: sudo rm -rf /whateverthetimemachineis does not work Disabling the ACL permissions first with sudo fsaclctl -p /whatever -d does not work, sudo: fsaclctl: command not found Use the delete all backup feature in Time Machine... this is slow as hell, would take days. Need a command line solution. No I don't want to reformat the drive, I have other content on it, and no don't say I should have separated on two partition or two drives, I did it this say since partitions cannot be dynamically changed, and two drives is annoying since, whats the point of having a big drive?... plus has no relation to the issue at hand. Already googlied for hours and read everything on Super User, nothing working. and all solutions are the first 4. Any clues?

• Create swipe controlled simple flipbook style animation in ObjC

  Hi I am a beginner in Obj C development, though quite experienced (over 10 years) with other ECMAscript based languages and OOP development. I want to build a simple flipbook style animation, controlled through swiping motion. I'm sure extremely simple for any advanced ObjC coders. Can anyone with extensive ObjC-CocoaTouch experience give me some higher level recommendations? ie, 1 -general application design, should I start with a simple view based application, or navigation based or? 2 -should I use 3rd party animation frameworks such as Cocos2D, or stick with built in classes and methods? 3 -if using built in methods, classes, what is the recommended way of achieving a animation, that will be controlled via swipe and touch gestures? 4 -I want to eventually have multiple 'flipbooks' that I can 'instantly' swap with one another, ie to give the net effect of an object changing color, etc, but not sure how to approach this from a memory management point of view, related to #1 above Except for point 3 above, I'm not expecting any actual code examples. Just general guidelines to follow and perhaps, what are some next steps I should take in my goal as an ObjC code samurai.

• is there a way to prespecify to overwrite files with same name?

  Connections to network drives are ridiculously slow (e.g. 15kb/sec on really good days) and when I'm copying files I leave my desk. My problem is when there is a file with the same name to be overwritten, is there a way to specify in advanced to overwrite files? I know it has the option "do same for next x conflicts" but that doesn't popup until (in some cases) a long time after the files start copying. See my dilemma? Example: copying 500 files, estimated time 2 hours, I leave, after 10 minutes message comes up about file with same name and asks if it should overwrite (in this time copying stalls), I come back 30 minutes latter to find only the files in the 10 minutes copied. Out of curiosity how could the network speed be so bad? I asked the boss and he said because it gets routed around a lot and is just bad :(

• PC with 2 RAMs of different frequencies (1GB 533MHz + 2GB 667MHz) showing only 2GB RAM

  I have 6 years old PC with 1.25GB (1GB + 256MB) of DDR2 533MHz RAM. As computer has become very slow and memory usage reaching its limits most of the times, i decided to upgrade RAM. But unfortunately, im not finding retailers selling DDR2 533Mhz RAM near my area. Since I was not sure mixing up RAMs of different frequencies, i searched in web. Most results said they can be mixed but computer would run at lower frequency of the 2 RAMs. So I bought 2GB DDR2 667Mhz RAM expecting my pc to have 3GB RAM running at 533 MHz. But computer properties page shows only 2GB RAM. BIOS settings too show the slot with 2GB 667MHz as ACTIVE and other slot with 1GB 533MHz as "NOT INSTALLED". When I removed 2GB RAM, they computer shows only 1GB RAM. So for some reason, 1GB RAM is not getting detected/used. What is the problem here? thanks in advance.

  It's no secret that large files offered up for download often are coupled with their MD5 or SHA-1 hash so that after you download you can verify the file's integrity. Are these still the best algorithms to use for this? Obviously these are very popular hashes that potential downloaders would have easy access to. Ignoring that factor, what hashes have the best properties for being used for this? For example, bcrypt would be horrible for this. It's designed to be slow. That would suck to use on your 7.4 GB dual layer OS ISO you just downloaded when a 12 letter password might take up to a second with the right parameters.

• Linux: Alternative to rsync? (ie, scp with resume)

  I've been using rsync to automatically send files from one box to another, which is great compared to scp, since it supports resuming. However, when resuming a very large file (10gb) rsync has to read both files and compare them, which is very slow. I don't need fancy error handling, just "scp with resume", so here's my question: Is there an alternative to rsync/scp, that supports resuming without having to read both source and destination files? • Tool to bulk speed up/convert an audio file

  I want to listen to certain podcasts on my phone but I have two common problems: The audio is in some weird format (some don't play on my phone). The audio is slow. I want to use something like sox or avconv to bulk convert the files. Since this is just voice and going on a cell phone, small low-quality files would be best for me. I had some good success using avconv: avconv -i weird.wma normal.ogg Unforunately, this command creates an enormous ogg file and I can't get it play faster. Ideally, this particular file would play at 170% of the original speed.

  I have an Ubuntu linux Linode server that I am trying to install OpenVPN on. I'm following the tutorials (which, it turns out, are quite incomplete). auto br0 iface br0 inet static address 192.168.0.10 network 192.168.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.0.255 gateway 192.168.0.1 bridge_ports eth0 bridge_fd 9 bridge_hello 2 bridge_maxage 12 bridge_stp off When I add this chunk in my /etc/network/interfaces, and I restart networking, my eth0 interface does not have an IP and I cannot get on the network (I need to use a buggy, slow, and annoying AJAX term to do damage repair). Why does adding this screw everything up? Any tips on how to set up this bridged adapter?? Thanks in advance!

  Hi to all. I'm just wondering, is there any two-panels-interface (like Total Commander, File Manager, etc) bookmark manager, extension, etc for Google Chrome? Using of the default bookmark manager is not so suitable because of two reasons: 1) I've gathered a very large collection of bookmarks (please, don't ask why) 2) bookmarks hierarchy tree always expands its branches when the bookmark manager is open (this makes the moving of bookmarks through the bookmark tree much and much harder). • Staggering java linux process startup to prevent OOM

  I am running a number of java processes on a single Linux machine. From a memory and computing standpoint, everything is fine when things are static. However, periodically we use a configuration management package up upgrade the jar or war files, and restart the java process. The problem is, that is restarts them all relatively quickly, and so we get 10 or so java VMs restarting all at the same time (we use daemontools for the service stops/starts), which wreaks havoc on the machine, in terms of OOMs or just really slow. This is because it's spawning the JVM 10x at the same time. Other than trying to stagger the startups, is there a smarter way of handling this? Maybe a sysctl tuning performance parameters, or a JVM parameter?

• Best practice for scaling a single application source to multiple nodes

  I have an application which needs to scale horizontally to cover web and service nodes (at the moment they're all on one) but interact with the same set of databases and source files (both application code and custom assets). Database is no problem, it's handled already with replication in MongoDB. Also, the configuration of the servers are the same (100% linux). This question is literally about sharing a filesystem between machines so that its content is always correct, regardless of the node accessing it. My two thoughts have so far been NFS and SAN - SAN being prohibitively expensive and NFS seeing some performance issues on the second node with regards to glob()ing in PHP. Does anyone have recommended strategies or other techniques that don't involved sharding data across nodes or any potential gotchas in NFS that may cause slow disk seek times? To give you an idea of the scale, the main node initialises it's application modules in ~ 0.01 seconds. The secondary is taking ~2.2 seconds. They're VM's inside a local virtual network in ESXi and ping time between them is ~0.3ms

  I have a drive with failed sectors ect... I can't image it with Acronis as it hangs. I can't with Knoppiz it hangs. CHKDSK hangs. I want to use DDRescure but I don't have any Linux boxes running at the moment. I could do is in a VM but that seems like it would be slow and problematic? • Samba PDC plus universal folder

  I know how to configure samba on my ubuntu box to become a PDC however I need some select files to be accessible to multiple users. These files are beyond their personal files. I.E. users A-C need to be able to access a schedule saved as a spreadsheet. But user D does not and users B-D need to be able to access confidential employee info but user A does not. • Active Directory Profile Slows down machine

  I have a strange issue with an Active Directory profile. When the user logs onto a machine with his profile, the whole machine becomes incredibly slow and unresponsive, with programs hanging and taking an age to load everything. If I log into the same machine with any other profile nothing happens. I took a look at his original profile, any start up programs, login scripts, etc and could not see what could be causing this. The machine is not running out of memory or CPU. Nothing strange is appearing in the event log and I can see nothing running under his profile which may cause this. So I created the user a new profile to test this on and exactly the same thing happens on the first login. The only thing which would of been carried across is the security groups the user is assigned to, yet I have other users with the same groups who do not experience these issues so I am now at a complete loss on where to go next!

• Chipset GPU causes a massive slowdown

  My AMD Radeon HD 7700 recently broke (fan stopped working and GPU overheated), and now I'm running on internal chipset graphics, and it causes a massive slowdown of the whole PC. I've changed the graphics memory from 32MB (minimum) to 256MB (highest), and it hasn't made any difference whatsoever. I'm using Windows Aero, and disabling it should have made a small difference, but it didn't; the whole PC is still slow. I know that it's not the computer build, because I built it myself, and it was a lot faster when it had the AMD Radeon HD 7700 in it, which is the reason why I believe it's the internal chipset graphics that are causing the problem. Is this behavior normal? I don't have the cash right now to go out and buy a new dedicated GPU. I'm using an ASRock N68C-GS FX motherboard with an AMD FX 4100 (overclocked to 4.3GHZ), with 4GB RAM. The overclock was an attempt to resolve this issue, and it isn't related to this issue that the integrated graphics is causing a slowdown.

  Hi, i have recently been given the task of trying to work out why the login time (not machine boot time) for some of our users seems slow. The vast majority of clients (95%) are running on XP sp3, Windows 2003 domain controlers. Most users have the same model of machine.   We have a server running our web app (PHP / MySQL) which is SLOW. My predecessor says that: "We use to do database maintenance, which use to clear the buffer, cached and unwanted variables." • Uploading with browser makes all other browser tabs and devices disconnect

  Whenever I upload a video to YouTube all other browser tabs behave like there is no connection at all. It even affects my phone and other computers on the network therefor I think it has to do with my router. When the upload is done everything works normally again. I never observed this behavior with any other upload. My router is a Fritz!Box 7390 and my uploading PC is connected through a 1000mb/s switch (wired) to the router. Uploading through another browser does not change anything.   I'm diagnosing some issue with Oracle virtual box where virtual machine sometimes perform terribly slow (much slower then notebook with worse configuration): Notebook i7 (2 cores with HT = 4 logical CPUs), 4GB RAM, 5400 rpm disk, Win 7 64bit Virtual machine (Oracle Virtual Box) Host: i7 (4 cores with HT = 8 logical CPUs, 12 GB RAM, system runs from SSD, virtual machine from 7200 rpm disk, Win 7 64bit) Virtual machine: 4 cores assigned, 8 GB RAM assigned, Win 2008 R2 Enterprise (64 bit) Virtual machine uses bridge to separate network interface (machine has two) VPN for network communication No other virtual machine runs on the host Host has installed ESET Smart Security All SW is updated with last version. My question is if anti-virus on the host machine can somehow affect performance of the virtual machine and if so how can I turn it off without turning the anti-virus itself?

  Recently I expanded LAN in my office from 3 to 10 computers. Structure star topology, one ADSL Modem connected to One Switch which is again connected to 10 computers. Also we have Wifi device Netgear which is connected from switch. ADSL Modem acts as the DHCP Server, all the system will have default gateway IP (ADSL Modem's IP) Network latency is now become very high, All the chat severs disconnect often like google talk, skype etc, also internet become very very slow. when all the computer turned on. We have 4 Mbps Download and 100 Kbps upload Net speed. Its look like ADSL Modem cannot able to handle all the connections. I tried to setup a system as default gateway which will connect to modem, not sure how to do this. Please advice on this.
