• gtk2/mate apps are choppy on debian testing [migrated]

  I have recently upgraded to a core-i7 system and now all the apps from mate (GTK2 based) are very slow. Basically when I switch to a workspace that has a couple mate-terminals open, they are redrawn as if these were sent over the network. GTK3 apps and firefox work properly and are refreshed instantly. I'm running Debian testing. I have tried to reinstall xorg and related packages and everything seems to work fine except for this. Here is my xorg.log. Any hints?

• Improving Windows Authentication performance on IIS

  We're struggling with performance issues with a ASP.NET MVC site that is using Windows Authentication. Response time is very slow on the first request to the site when the user is being authenticated. Further, every time the Authorization header is sent from the browser the response time increases with many seconds. The same issue occurs for both executed files and static content like CSS and JS. Access to the application is restricted to users within a certain role and we are now planning to allow access to static files for all authenticated users to see if that helps. The authentication method in use is NTLM. How should we go forward in pinpointing why authentication decreases performance drastically?

• MS Access ADP front end and SQL Server back end for field data collection?

  I am an anthropologist. I am going to the field and will use a netbook to collect survey data. The survey forms will need to allow me to enter data into multiple tables, search tables, allow subforms, and be fast enough to not slow down my interview. I have considered storing the data in a SQL Server Express 2008 R2 server (there will be a lot of data) while using a Microsoft Access data project as a front end. To cut down the number of steps required to collect and store data, I'm considering using the netbook for both data storage and collection (after reading this article about SQL Server on a netbook). My questions are: (1) Is there a simpler solution that is also gratis (gratis because I already have a MS Access license from my workplace, and SQL Server Express is, obviously, free)? (2) Does my idea to store and collect data using the netbook make sense? Thank you.

• Odd Apple AirPort Express behaviour

  I've been using a rather old AirPort Express for home Wi-Fi for a number of years. (It's old enough that it only supports WPA, not WPA2 -- perhaps this is an indication that I should upgrade!) In the last week I've been experiencing very slow internet over the Wi-Fi. Suspecting that someone outside my home was leeching from me (despite a reasonable password and MAC address filtering turned on) I decided to change some settings: I changed the SSID, turned off broadcast of the SSID and changed the password. After these changes, I managed to connect using the new password on my iPad. But on the other devices I tried (iPhone, PS3) I was not able to connect. In fact, I only succeeded in connecting when I entered my OLD password! Is this a known issue with ancient AirPort Express units? Is my unit cracked and unrecoverable?

• How is it possible for SSD's drives to have such a good latency?

  First time i read some information about SSD's, i was surprised to learn they internally use NAND flash chips. This kind of memory is generally slow (low bandwidth) and have high latency while SSD's are just the opposite. But here is how it works : SSD drives increase their bandwidth by using several NAND flash chips in parallel. In other words, they do some data striping (aka RAID0) across several chips (done by the controller). What i don't understand is how SSD's drives have such a low latency, whereas they are using NAND chips? (or at least lot better than what a typical single NAND chip would do) EDIT: I think under-estimate NAND chip capabilities. USB drives, while powered by NAND's are mostly limited by USB protocol (which have a pretty high latency) and the USB controller. That explain their poor performance in some cases.

• How to allow simple file sharing on Windows Server 2008R2 through VPN

  We are a small, distributed company with a Windows Server 2008R2 installation. I would like to set up a way for our employees to connect securely to this server via VPN and then be able to map a network drive. I have gotten this to work somewhat by installing the Network Policy and Access Services Role on the server and using the default settings. I have also created a network share on the server. The problem is that our connectivity is sporadic (sometimes the service stops listening on the port or simply refuses to authorize correct credentials) and slow. I can always connect through VPN, but mapping is problematic. I would be grateful for the answer on how to accomplish this as well as some guidance on whether I am on the right track. • Windows 7 + NVidia == 640x480 on external projectors

  Hello, I'm having a major problem and I really need your help! I have a MacBook Air which has the NVidia 9400M. The problem is, when I connect it to an external projector Windows 7 (and Vista) only allow me to connect at 640x480. I need it to use the laptop to present at conferences, as such I need it to work on a number of different projectors - at the moment I need to use OSX and VMWare but it's painfully slow and really doesn't work. At the moment, I'm considering buying a new laptop :( Is there any way to override the screen resolutions provided? I've saw some information around EDID? Thanks Ben

• How computers display raw, low-level text and graphics

  My ever-growing interest in computers is making me ask deeper questions, that we don't seem to have to ask anymore. Our computers, at boot, as far as I understand it, are in text mode, in which a character can be displayed using the software interrupt 0x10 when AH=0x0e. We've all seen the famous booting font that always looks the same, regardless of what computer is booting. So, how on earth do computers output graphics at the lowest level, say, below the OS? And also, surely graphics aren't outputted a pixel at a time using software interrupts, as that sounds very slow? Is there a standard that defines basic outputting of vertices, polygons, fonts, etc. (below OpenGL for example, which OpenGL might use)? What makes me ask is why OS' can often be fine without official drivers installed; how do they do that? Apologies if my assumptions are incorrect. I would be very grateful for elaboration on these topics!

• Windows screen resolution change: lengthen timeout

  Occasionally I need to change the screen resolution of the console of a Windows virtual machine using XenCenter. When you attempt this change, Windows will revert if you don't accept the changed resolution within 15 seconds of clicking 'apply.' (Normally, this is a good thing.) The problem is that if I have a slow connection between XenCenter and the Xen hypervisor, the virtual console display may not refresh quickly enough to allow me to respond within 15 seconds. As a result, I can't change the resolution, even though the new resolution is valid. Is there a way to increase the timeout before reverting to the original display resolution?

  Zune is able to accept pretty much every media format under the sun, or at least can once someone's installed something like the KLite Codec Pack. However, it does do conversion on your behalf to a more supported format when you try to sync the contents over the Windows Phone. I'd like to not have to wait for the really slow process of doing the conversion... how do I know which media format to download? (For example, there are 5 media formats available for each of the MIX sessions....)

• Different versions of 2.5" drives? Unscreawing Intel 320 for slimmer drive to fit newer thinkpads?

  My x60s laptops come with about 1-2mm heigher 2.5" HDD than newer x220 models. This is totally stupid when one would like to reuse the old drive in the newer laptops. I bought newer 2.5" 320 Intel SSDs and they seem to have such 1-2mm gap to unscrew but I am unsure whether it is meant for opening. Could someone instruct what to do here? Look the manufacturer has started changing the old good 2.5" drives into slightly different versions, now it means slow compability issues to fix or totally new 2.5" drives. Ideas how to proceed? Unscrewing newer 320 drives or are some other versions of 2.5" drives meant for x220? Does there exist some sort of racks to get drives working between different comps? Perhaps booting from laplink is currently the easiest solution to get things working when changing harddrives between comps? • Experience with MooseFS?

  Anyone have any experience using MooseFS? I want an easy distributed storage platform to store static data archive of about 10 TB and serve it to 20-40 nodes. Also I want to be able to add storage as the archive grows without having to rebuild the filesystem. I don't care if it's a bit slow. I just want it to be simple and stable. Basically from what I can see for OS X it's between MooseFS and Gluster. Any other suggestions?

  Hi All, I have a friend that hosts his website on IIS and Windows Server 2003 R2 32-bit. He has .WMV files and .MPG and others and some of these are 30 mb in size! He wonders why users complain the site is slow! So my question is how can we reduce the size of these movies? What software? What settings for bit-rate, etc? Is there free software? I can use either a Mac or a PC. Thoughts are appreciated.

• Changing languages rapidly causes Linux to crash.

  So I'm running Xmonad on my college computer (which runs Kubuntu) and whenever I leave my desk, instead of using x-screensaver which is incredibly buggy and slow, I just change to another workstation, open a terminal and change language to a language which uses symbols instead of letters, and then change back using an aliased command. For example, my .profile has the lines alias qwer="setxkbmap jp" alias *******="setxkbmap ie" where ******* is my password, using japanese characters. Changing languages seems to be much faster than running x-screensaver. The problem: rapidly changing languages seems to crash Linux; it just won't accept input (and it's not because the language hasn't changed back, nothing is output to the console). I can't use Ctrl+Alt+F1..F7, I can't "raise the elephants", anything, it just won't work. I'm just wondering, is this a known issue, and if so, is there something I can do about it?

  I think anyone who's used Oracle SQL Developer will agree that it's painfully slow on the load. My research has lead me to a solution that seems to have helped a little, and that's telling OSQLD not to check for updates on startup. However, it still takes several minutes to open. What could OSQLD possibly be doing during load time? Is there any way get it to open right away?   I have got a laptop which is configured to have the user profile in a network drive. This is causing me a lot of headaches since the connectivity to my company is very slow. I want to relocate the profile of my user into a local directory. How do I do that? Those are the settings at the moment: C:\>set HOME HOMEDRIVE=P: HOMEPATH=\ HOMESHARE=\\SOMESERVER\_myuser$ The drive P is a network drive mapped to HOMESHARE. I can't find where windows is setting those environment variables, not even in the registry. The laptop is running Windows XP.

• Application runs with different speed for two different user logins on windows server

  We have a application in Windows Server that download data from SQL server and store in our local machine. Now the problem I have is my Windows Server has two logins and in one login the app runs real slow, like gets 1 row in a minute, and from another login it fetches 20 rows in a minute. We have this problem only for a last couple of days. What could have caused this? More details: SQL server:S QL server2008 Os: Windows server 2008 Access method: Remote connection. Application: Custom .Net application to get data Both accounts are limited rights accounts. Any tools to track this? I am not sure what should I start with.

  Does anyone know of a Firefox plugin that would enable tab-completion (or some other key sequence like Alt-L) of items in drop-down lists in web forms? e.g. ou<TAB>in<TAB>s<TAB> for 'OurCompany - Internal Support' Vimperator's hints mode makes it very ergonomic to focus the drop-down list with a key sequence like f13 but the keyboard interface to the drop-down list still sucks. I very frequently have to pick items from a very long list with very long common prefixes among the entries (e.g. 30-40 starting with OurCompany -), which renders both the built-in keyboard interface and the mouse pretty slow and unergonomic. I basically want readline support for filling webforms!

• Applications starts very slowly from a network path

  Hi We have a windows 2008 server which hosts the network share \\srvcompany\lib. This share contains several applications needed for the daily business. Every client/user (all win xp) has shortcuts on the desktop to these apps. We have the problem that at several (but not all) clients the apps starts very slowly. If I copy the application's programm files to a local folder then they'll start fastly. When I watch the memory usage in the task manager on such a "slow" machine while an applications starts I notice that the memory usage grows much slowier than when I start the app from a "fast" machine. But when I copy files with Windows Explorer from this share, the speed is nearly the same. I've also checked the network driver, both tested clients have the same network card with the same driver version. Has anyone an idea where or what I should check next to solve this problem?   Whenever you use an Metro app and you want to import some files there is a little file browser. Like this: A lot of folders possible; however there is a folder that is very important: The personal Dropbox. How can I add this folder as a "favorite" in this view? Always browsing through the whole filesystem is slow in the Metro Interface. I realize I could make symlinks for all the typical Dropbox folders but that's simply annoying and there has to be another way (just like it's possible to "hack" the "Send To..." options for the context menu.

• preloading RSS contents in thunderbird, before actually reading them

  i have thunderbird 3.x, and i'm subscribed to several RSS feeds. How can I tell thunderbird to load/download any new RSS items in the background? The usual behavior with RSS feeds is that it download the headrs, or few introductory lines from the contents, but only when i'm clicking a feed item it starts loading "for real". I really want to receive the feeds and not to wait for them to load, the same way i receive emails in any email client - all messages are fully downloaded at once. there could be several reasons, BTW. - e.g. if i have short connection time, i'd rather connect, sync everything at once, and read it later. - or if i have a slow wifi connection, it's annoying to wait for each and every message, but the computer is idle while reading.. thanks

  I'm looking to deploy several virtual machines for users. They need access to both Windows and Linux. They also need to use the computers graphics card (for Photoshop, modeling, etc) under Windows. My question is, will an Ubuntu host/Windows guest or a Windows host/Ubuntu guest be faster? I'm somewhat worried about Windows getting a cluttered registry and slow, but on the otherhand, a Windows host would have direct access to hardware (Unless I'm just unaware of how to grant hardware access to a guest). Does the choice of software (VMware or VirtualBox) effect the choice?

• Why does Exim puts emails on hold if there are frozen messages in the queue?

  I've a CentOS with CPanel server working as a SMTP server, which currently uses 20 different hostnames and IP addresses to deliver email for an email newsletter service. However, it's extremely slow in sending emails. It's sending like 10 emails per minute, which I check by running the "exim -bpc" command. What could be affecting this? One thing I'm supposing, is that there are frozen messages in the queue, which are slowing down the sending until they're sent out, and are putting new messages on hold. What are the most common reasons a message can get frozen? Also, would it be more efficient to use 20 different small VPSs to send out email rather than use one large VPS with the 20 different hostnames and IPs in it?

• Possible causes for Domain server being unavailable?

  One of our servers was compromised after a user with administrative privileges accidentally loaded a virus from a USB drive on a desktop connected to the domain. The two most obvious symptoms of this were: The server is no longer responding to login attempts The root directory of the drive containing user data has been filled with randomly named empty folders. (Initially it was around a million folders, I've been slowly deleting them.) I've run several virus scans from different vendors and am fairly confident the virus has been removed but the damage is done. I'm hoping the two symptoms are related and that once the directories are gone the server will start responding again. The drive is very slow to respond. I'm deleting about 20k folders at a time. Anymore than that and windows explorer becomes unresponsive. In the event that I finish cleaning up the HD and things don't return to normal what other things can I check?
