• A peculiar issue with nm-applet

  There is a somewhat strange error that I've noticed with my gnome sessions. It's not a problem that causes a lot of trouble, but at times it becomes annoying. Anyway, here it is: when I fire up gnome-session-fallback (which is the main one I use), the network applet doesn't run with root permission. Here is what it looks like http://i.imgur.com/8kc7Vrd.jpg . On the other hand, here is what the regular gnome session looks like http://i.imgur.com/wfkkE3E.jpg . From the regular session I can easy edit and add networks, but from fallback session I cannot add/edit anything, or turn off/on the wireless or networking. Any ideas?

  Hi friends I am not able to connect my broadband connection with ubuntu and it doesnt work. The connection works fine when I use Windows7 but when i use ubuntu I am not able to access the internet. I followed various steps mentioned in various sites and still could not find a solution. I have installed ubuntu 8.04 in my system. The interface eth0 is not at all detected and when i use the menu system-administrator-network I am not getting an option for wired connection. Just the WIreless connection and Point to Point connection tabs are available.. It's really urgent.. I'll be very happy if u guys can propose to me a working solution to deal with this problem.. • Installing programs from a download

  Hello, my name is Anthony and I'm new to Ubuntu and any other Linux OS for that matter. My question concerns downloading a program, and then installing it. The program is called Remotedroid, it lets you use your phone as a wireless keyboard and mouse. I'm use to windows automatically starting setup upon download and cant figure out how to initiate the install in Ubuntu. The programs website says its compatible with Linux OS and the readme file says to just click the extension remotedroidserver.jar to use, but it wont work and none of the files do anything. I've unzipped all the files and my Java is all up to date as far as i know, I think. I'm just not getting how to run a setup in Ubuntu. I looked around this site for the answer but came up with nothing so if someone could maybe offer some insight I would be grateful. Thank you.

• How do I access an external hard drive plugged into my router?

  I am running Ubuntu 11.10 and I own a Netgear N600 Wireless Dual Band Router with a USB port built into it. Naturally, the router came with instructions on how to mount and view this drive with both Windows and Mac, but nothing about Linux. I have an WD Elements 1 TB external HDD that I would like to plug into the router and share across my home network. However, when I plug it in, absolutely nothing happens on my desktop. I checked on two different machines and nothing seems to indicate that the drive has been mounted (or is even seen at all) on either machine. I am fully aware that it may not be possible to do this with a Linux system, but I was hoping someone might have a suggestion. Thanks!

• Windows Service Printing Behaviour

  Alright, I was tasked to develop a Windows Service that listens to a directory for files that are dropped in it, read them, delete them and print out a report. I installed the service on my work laptop (Win 7 x86) and a test machine (XP x86) under a User account at first. It would do everything as it should except the print the report. No errors, nothing. Then I made it run under Local System and it produced a "No printers found" exception. Converting the app to a Console Application and running on these machines gave the desired result. OK, so now I was assuming that there are security "stuff" involved. Then I installed the service on a Server 2008 x64 machine (under Local System) and it just worked. Can anybody explain to me why this is happening? Why does the service allow printing from Server OS but not from a Desktop OS or am I missing something very obvious?

• Cannot access my own web page

  I am developing, learning and experimenting with php,html,javascript,flash and so on. Having web hosting and all of the cpanel, phpmyadmin and other utilities. One day, while updating information, connection between my computer and website just went down. I found out that it is only from this computer, where I cannot access anything. I don't know what is the reason I cannot access website, however this is what I have checked so far: Everything else opens normally, having problem only with my page. Cannot access FTP,cpanel or any kind of information related to the domain and hosting ipconfigs detects IP, but shows request timed out (so its not browser related) Turned off Firewall,AV, Rebooted computer Cleared caches,temp,cookies,histry with CCleaner Checked connectivity with both (wired,wireless) networks ISP has dynamic IP that has been changed about 3 times since issue Checked host file I am out of ideas and understanding what could cause this kind of issue, however couple minutes ago, found out that everything works with proxy server (when adding IP and port to the browsers) Can someone point out what should I check or try to get rid of this problem?

• 12.04 freezes on install

  I'm new to ubuntu and can't for the life of me understand how to get around this issue. I'm having a problem where when I insert the boot disk that i burned for 12.04, it loads and gives me the language option and select an installation type, i select either try ubuntu / install ubuntu and it begins to load. Then after about 5 mintues of the purple screen with the dots under the UBUNTU it freezes the whole computer, and the only way to get out is to turn off the laptop with the power button. I have read previous threads saying people had similar "freezing" issues including ones that mention my model of laptop, HP Pavillion DV1000. But it appears their problems are post installation and relate to their wireless cards. I have tried changing the boot options (F6) and I am totally stuck. Can anyone shed any light on to this issue? • fresh install, update and x-windows no longer working after login 12.10

  I Just recently installed desktop 12.10 on laptop, all was working fine logged in and it stated it wanted to update as it found updates. naturally I let it update and it asked me to reboot to use the new updates did that, now it boots fine i get login prompt. login as per normal then all i get is background with nothing else, if i turn off the wireless i get the disconnection notification pop up but i have nothing else on screen any wrror messages gets displayed as well but their is nothing. their was one program that failed that no longer prompts which gives options of reloading or just closing and continuing either way it just look like it hangs I can ctrl alt del to log out and it does that fine but still wont load no mater how many times i try saw a topic about a ati driver playing up which he typed the following in a ty which i can get to all of them as well. export DISPLAY=:0;gnome-shell --replace the answer i got back was the program gnome-shell is not installed you can install it by typing sudo apt-get install gnome-shell i also tried sudo pkill X which did nothing any help would be appreciated Thanks

• Issues with HP Mini 110-1125NR

  Just finished installing Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin on my HP Mini 110-1125NR and im having small, but rather irritating issues. I installed it over the Windows 7 (starter) which came with the netbook. Firstly, it will only boot from the USB flashdisk. If i try to boot from the hardrive, it goes to a black screen. Second, built-in wireless wont activate. system says its enabled and on, but the light indicator is still orange (as if its off), and i cant get a signal from my home wi-fi I havent found any solved threads for inspiration, and mos of them are pretty old (1 year +) so i thought of giving a try to see if any of you guys System is: HP Mini 110-1100 1gb memory Intel Atom CPU N270 @ 1.60GHz x 2 Os - Precise Pangolin - Ubuntu 12.04 160gb Hard disk If any of you are aware of the solutions of my issues it'd be awesome Thanks in advance for any help!

• How to Remove Soft Blocks Permanently in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS?

  I am using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on an Asus Eee PC 1000HA. Since I upgraded to 12.04, I have had problems connecting to wifi. When I fly, I need to disable wifi. When I try to reconnect, the "enable networking" option is no longer available. If I type in the terminal "rfkill list", the following shows up: 0: eeepc-wlan: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: yes Hard blocked: no If I type "rfkill unblock all", "enable networking" will become available and I am able to connect to wifi. How can I permanently remove this annoying Soft Block? I don't want to be typing up two lines of code. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  I've got a CUPS job control file. I need to get the actual dimensions of the print that was made. This is the way I've figure out to do it: Get the paper name using the media attribute. (e.g. Letter) Get the printer uri from the printer-uri attribute. (e.g. ipp://localhost/printers/MyPrinter) Get the printer name by passing the printer uri to the IPP_GET_PRINTER_ATTRIBUTES operation and getting the printer-name attribute. (e.g. MyPrinter) Get the path to the PPD passing the printer name to the the cupsGetPPD method. Open the PPD passing the path to the PPD to the ppdOpenFile method. Get the paper size by passing the PPD and paper name to the ppdPageSize method. This will work, but it seems a bit roundabout. Is there a more efficient way of getting what I need?

Have an architect who wants his clients to enable his clients to upload (ftp - but don't know if http could be a better alternative?) files (plans etc.) to him, through the website I'm designing for him. I have seen similar things available on printers websites... I have seen uploadify, but it requires flash (I can only code HTML, CSS and a tiny bit of PHP), and don't think it is a secure option. I have also seen net2ftp, but don't really understand how it works. Any direction would be sincerely appreciated.

• Getting Started with 12.04 LTS Problems

  Okay previously I used ubuntu 10.04 in Desktops and Loved it! I bought a newer Toshiba Satellite with an i7 CPU, 8GB Ram, 1TB HD, first thing I tried to do was install Ubuntu 9 on it then I found out it was no longer Supported. (I gave my 10.04 disk away) So I tried installing Windows 7 and experienced SO MANY problems, I am going back to try 12.04. Starting all over again. After installing 12.04 Wireless was Detected yet said it was Disabled by a Hardware Switch. Went read through the Message Boards found Solution which was Sudo rf Kill All. Okay all excited I would finally get my Ubuntu to finally work I rushed back to my laptop from the internet cafe, and went looking for the TERMINAL input on my Ubuntu 12.04, and I cannot find the Terminal. If I can't find the TERMINAL how Can I enter any Sudo Stuff? So I guess the first question is Where is the Terminal Located in 12.04? Thank you.

• suspend error on 14.04 LTS

  I've looked around and seems like various problems around suspend are wide spreaded for 14.04 release, nevertheless I haven't seen exactly my problem reported, nor my laptop model mentioned. So, the problem. When I press sleep button system seems to be going into suspend, i.e. screen goes black, it stops responding on the keyboard and wireless LEDs turn off, however the power LED doesn't go into suspend state and CPU fan also keeps spinning. But unlike the other problem described here https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1315435 when I close the lid and reopen it - system wakes up and goes back to normal locked screen state, so reboot is not needed. System details: This is a clean freshly installed Ubuntu 14.04, 32bit Laptop Dell D630 kernel 3.13.0-34-generic

  I am making one application where user will print invoices which I am displaying using Crystal Report. The user showed me his current application made using ForPro. In that application, under Printer Options form, one can see all the printers currently installed and the user could select default printer. When the invoice is made, the user presses the print button, then there is one dialog asking for no. of copies. When it's entered, the invoice gets printed directly, without any Print Dialog Box. If the user wants to change the printer again he/she will change it in the Printer Option form. I want to know if similar thing is possible in Crystal Report and need guidance on how to approach for it.

• Using "route add" to tell my computer to use a direct ethernet connexion instead of wifi ?

  2 PCs are involved. Both are connected to the internet via Wifi on the same router. I can ping to/from each other and share folders flawlessly, but I'd like to be able to set a direct Ethernet link between them to speed up file transfers AND keep the Wifi connections (no gateway). So I plugged my RJ45 cable, and set up the connection. It works, but the PCs are only using this connection if one of them if disconnected from the Wifi. PC1 local address is 192.168.0.7 on its ethernet interface, and 192.168.1.21 on the wifi one. PC2 local address is 192.168.0.6 on its ethernet interface, and 192.168.1.22 on the wifi one. My question is : I'd like to using the route add command to tell PC1 to use the Ethernet interface when it needs to connect with PC2, by specifying "IF 2" at the end of the route add command. How can I do this ? I then bumped on to a PostScript interpreter called GhostScript (http://www.ghostscript.com/) and then the solution starts to get clearer and clearer.I managed to achieve a solution (maybe not be the simplest but efficient enough to achieve the least-maintenance-least-components goal) in 3-simple steps:Install GhostScript (http://www.ghostscript.com/download/) - this is an open-source PostScript and PDF interpreter. Printing directly using GhostScript only produces grayscale prints using the laserjet generic driver unless you save as BMP image and then interpret the colours using the imageInstall GSView (http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/gsview/)- this is a GhostScript add-on to make it easier to directly print to a Windows printer. GSPrint automates the above  PDF -> BMP -> Printer Driver.Run the GSPrint command from SQL Server agent or Windows Service:"C:\Program Files\Ghostgum\gsview\gsprint.exe" -color -landscape -all -printer "printername" "C:\temp\print.pdf"Command line options are here: http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/gsview/gsprint.htmAnother lesson learned is, since you are calling the script from the Service Account, it will not necessarily have the Printer mapped in its Windows profile (if it even has one). The workaround to this is by adding a local printer as you normally would and then map this printer to the network printer. Note that you may need to install the Printer Driver locally in the server.So, that's it! There are many ways to achieve a solution. The key thing is how you provide the smartest solution!

The AutoVue Document Print Service products help address a trivial, yet very common challenge: printing and batch printing documents. The AutoVue Document Print Service is a Web-Services based interface, which allows developers to complement their print server solutions by leveraging AutoVue's printing capabilities within broader enterprise applications like Asset Lifecycle Management, Product Lifecycle Management, Enterprise Content Management solutions, etc. This means that you can leverage the AutoVue Document Print Service products as part of your printing solution to automate the printing of virtually any document type required in any business process. Clients that consume AutoVue's Document Print Service can be written in any language (for example Java or .NET) as long as they understand Web Services Description Language (WSDL) and communicate using Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP). The print solution consists of three main components, as described in the diagram below: a print server (not included in the AutoVue Document Print Service offering) that will interact with your application to identify the files that need to be printed, the printer to send each file, as well as the print options needed for each file (paper size, page orientation, etc), and collate the print job requests. The print server will also take care of calling the AutoVue Document Print Service to perform the actual printing. The AutoVue Document Print Services send files to a printer for printing. If the documents you need to print from your application are not stored in a content management system, the Print Server will need to ensure that files are made available to the AutoVue Document Print Service. The Print Server could for example fetch the files out of your application or an extension to the application could be developed to fetch the files and make them available to the AutoVue DPS.
