• Ajaxcontroltoolkit VS. jQuery

  hi folks, I asked a question a few days ago about how to customise the calendar extender of the ajaxcontroltoolkit library and got a response saying I should ditch the control kit for jQuery. I have to say I've heard jQuery being mentioned quite a bit and more importantly I've seen it as a requirement for an increasing number of web development job vacancies. I do like the ajaxcontroltoolkit with its simplicity and integration with Visual Studio. Does anyone have an opinion on the two of these? I'd love to hear from developers with experience with both these ajax solutions. -- Jonesy

• Unit testing a SQL code generator

  The team I'm on is currently writing code in TSQL to generate TSQL code that will be saved as scripts and later run. We're having a little difficulty in separating our unit tests between testing the code generator parts and testing the actual code that they generate. I've read through another similar question, but I was hoping to get some specific examples of what kind of unit test cases we might have. As an example, let's say that I have a bit of code that simply generates a DROP statement for a view, given the view schema and name. Do I just test that the generated code matches some expected outcome using string comparisons and then in a later integration or system test make sure that the drop actually drops the view if it exists, does nothing if the view doesn't exist, or raises an error if the view is one that we are marking as not allowing a drop? • PayPal testing without using Sandbox

  I am developing a website in PHP that accepts PayPal payments. It uses the IPN from PayPal and has a custom payment template etc etc. It all works great through the Sandbox server but when it comes to showing my client, I don't want to have to tell them to login to/create a Sandbox account, create a buyer account and make a payment - he hasn't got time for that and probably won't be able to do it. Therefore, my question is - is there any simple way that I can show my client the PayPal integration in "test mode" without him using the sandbox? I realise that I can set the transaction value to 0.01 and just test on the live PayPal server but that isn't an ideal solution. Cheers! Edit: Just to better explain what I mean, this is what my client sees when he first goes to checkout; As you can see, he has to login to his Sandbox account before then purchasing the item using the buyer email that he sets up. It's just confusing and totally non user-friendly.

• Payment Gateway Question

  Hi, My question is not exactly about coding, and I'm not sure if I can ask it here. Nevertheless, it's somewhat related to the payment integration process. I'm going to establish a service, and deliver it through a website. When you accept payments through PayPal, they display your actual name to every client, and I'm not that comfortable with such lack of privacy. Is there any way around that? Perhaps an alternative payment gateway that doesn't display your personal info to everyone? Any suggestions welcome! Thanks

• Why is this JLabel continuously repainting?

  I've got an item that appears to continuously repaint when it exists, causing the CPU to spike whenever it is in any of my windows. It directly inherits from a JLabel, and unlike the other JLabels on the screen, it has a red background and a border. I have NO idea why it would be different enough to continuously repaint. • Running junit tests in parallel ?

  I'm using junit 4.4 and maven and I have a large number of long-running integration tests. When it comes to parallellizing test suites there are a few solutions that allow me to run each test method in a single test-class in parallel. But all of these require that I change the tests in one way or another. I really think it would be a much cleaner solution to run X different test classes in X threads in parallel. I have hundreds of tests so I don't really care about threading individual test-classes. Is there any way to do this ?

Upon setting the Express Checkout, one gets to a page with a token, like this page: https://api-3t.sandbox.paypal.com/nvp The token looks more or less like that ACK=Failure&L_ERRORCODE0=81002&L_SHORTMESSAGE0=Unspecified%20Method&L_LONGMESSAGE0=Method%20Specified%20is%20not%20Supported&L_SEVERITYCODE0=Error My Question is: how do I fetch this toke by means of PHP? I do not want to be redirected to that page beforehand. How do I just fetch the contents of a remote file after passing certain post parameters? Thanks in advance!

  I have the following test in my Rails Application: it "should validate xml" do builder = Builder::XmlMarkup.new builder.server(:name => "myServer", :ip => "192.168.1.1").should == "<server name=\"myServer\" ip=\"192.168.1.1\"/>" end The problem is that this test passes sometimes, because the order of the xml tag attributes is unpredictable. Is there a way to force this order? Is there any other easy way to build xml? This example is simplified, I have a big XML. My problem is that I want to do an integration test, which compares a WebService call with a fixed XML file. Otherwise, I would have to parse the xml and verify element by element in the XML.

• Can you Export/Import Flex (4) Data Services?

  Flex newb here. I'm working in flashbuilder 4 (flex4?), and am being asked to create the client-side data services integration 'layer' in a flex app. There is another team working on the actual UI/Presentation. Both parts must be deployed in a single swf. If I use the data/services wizard to build out my service connections (and generate the ActionScript), is it possible to export these 'connections' so that they can easily be imported into another project? Or must they be defined through the wizard all over again? The other team wants to be able to see the connections appear in the new project's Data/Services inspector (IDE Tab). Thanks!

• Eclipse Java EE - Galileo - Unable to view plugins

  I am new to Eclipse so I am having a hard time troubleshooting this problem. I have a new installation of Eclipse Java EE - Galileo on Windows, and I am unable to see any changes made in the IDE after installing plugins. I have verified that the plugins are installed via installation details, but see no changes made. For example, after installing the maven integration plugin m2eclipse I go to File-New-Project ... and I have no option for maven. After installing the QuickRex plugin I have no view for it etc. I have tried re-installing the plugins, re-installing Eclipse, and starting Eclipse with the -clean option, but nothing has resolved the issue. Any ideas? Thanks!

• Performance problem Loading Dataset inside a virtual.

  Host Configuration: HP EliteBook 8530w 4G Ram Win7 Ultimate 64Bit RC SQL Server 2005 64bit Developer Edition Virtual: Windows Virtual PC 1G Ram allocated Integration Services installed Windows XP 64bit Up to date service packs and .Net framework through 3.5 SP1 Sharing the Gigabit network adapter of the Host I have a simple .Net console application which loads a dataset of approximately 37K rows. Running the application on the host executes in approximately 4 seconds. Running inside the virtual takes 729 seconds. The size of the application grows to about 65Mb when the dataset is finished loading, no calculated columns or event handlers are attached. [edit] I changed the virtual to use a loopback adapter to communicate with the host and performance is now on par with running on hardware. Any ideas as to why it would going over the network adapter be almost 200x longer? TraceRt shows that the connection is only one hop. Thanks, Shane Holder

• Experience with SVN vs. Team Foundation Server?

  A few months back my team switched our source control over to Subversion from Visual SourceSafe, and we haven't been happier. Recently I've been looking at Team Foundation Server, and at least on the surface, it seems very impressive. There is some great integration with Visual Studio, and lots of great tools for DBA's, testers, project managers, etc. The most obvious difference between these two products is price. It's hard to beat Subversion (free). Team Foundation Server is quite expensive, so the extra features would really have to kick Subversion in the pants. My question is: does anyone have practical experience with both? How do they compare, and is Team Foundation Server actually worth all the money?

• Transform only one axis to log10 scale with ggplot2

  I have the following problem: I would like to visualize a discrete and a continuous variable on a boxplot in which the latter has a few extreme high values. This makes the boxplot meaningless (the points and even the "body" of the chart is too small), that is why I would like to show this on a log10 scale. I am aware that I could leave out the extreme values from the visualization, but I am not intended to. Let's see a simple example with diamonds data: m <- ggplot(diamonds, aes(y = price, x = color)) The problem is not serious here, but I hope you could imagine why I would like to see the values at a log10 scale. Let's try it: m + geom_boxplot() + coord_trans(y = "log10") As you can see the y axis is log10 scaled and looks fine but there is a problem with the x axis, which makes the plot very strange. The problem do not occur with scale_log, but this is not an option for me, as I cannot use a custom formatter this way. E.g.: m + geom_boxplot() + scale_y_log10() My question: does anyone know a solution to plot the boxplot with log10 scale on y axis which labels could be freely formatted with a formatter function like in this thread? Editing the question to help answerers based on answers and comments: What I am really after: one log10 transformed axis (y) with not scientific labels. I would like to label it like dollar (formatter=dollar) or any custom format.   I have several custom controls (some kind of frames for content and layout management, like wrap panel), and would like to write unit tests for them. It's hard to find any good examples except Silverlight control toolkit, which has some helper classes to do unit tests and it's quite complicated. For MVVM classes it's easy to write tests because they don't use SL dependency system and infrastructure. Questions: how to unit test DepedenyProperty, what do I need to test how to test attached property do I test bindings with theme or UserControl, like simple textblock content binding, or command/event binding in MVVM with UserControl what else do I test in my custom controls, beside my business logic any good tutorial to achieve tests like those in control toolkit How do I start? Is SL controls toolkit only option for learning? For testing framework i'm using one from control toolkit, and for continuus integration on TFS build server I planned to use Statlight (from codeplex). Any advice on that?

• How to find an embedded platform?

  I am new to the locating hardware side of embedded programming and so after being completely overwhelmed with all the choices out there (pc104, custom boards, a zillion option for each board, volume discounts, devel kits, ahhh!!) I am asking here for some direction. Basically, I must find a new motherboard and (most likely) re-implement the program logic. Rewriting this in C/C++/Java/C#/Pascal/BASIC is not a problem for me. so my real problem is finding the hardware. This motherboard will have several other devices attached to it. Here is a summary of what I need to do: Required: 2 RS232 serial ports (one used all the time for primary UI, the second one not continuous) 1 modem (9600+ baud ok) [Modem will be in simultaneous use with only one of the serial port devices, so interrupt sharing with one serial port is OK, but not both] Minimum permanent/long term storage: Whatever O/S requires + 1 MB (executable) + 512 KB (Data files) RAM: Minimal, whatever the O/S requires plus maybe 1MB for executable. Nice to have: USB port(s) Ethernet network port Wireless network Implementation languages (any O/S I will adapt to): First choice Java/C# (Mono ok) Second choice is C/Pascal Third is BASIC Ok, given all this, I am having a lot of trouble finding hardware that will support this that is low in cost. Every manufacturer site I visit has a lot of options, and it's difficult to see if their offering will even satisfy my must-have requirements (for example they sometimes list 3 "serial ports", but it appears that only one of the three is RS232, for example, and don't mention what the other two are). The #1 constraint is cost, #2 is size. Can anyone help me with this? This little task has left me thinking I should have gone for EE and not CS :-). EDIT: A bit of background: This is a system currently in production, but the original programmer passed away, and the current hardware manufacturer cannot find hardware to run the (currently) DOS system, so I need to reimplement this in a modern platform. I can only change the programming and the motherboard hardware.

• Synchronizing in SQL Replication works when manually syncing, but not automatically

  I'm using SQL Server 2005 to create a replication copy of the main databases, so that the reports can point to the replication copy instead of locking out our main databases. I have set up the 3 databases as publications and then 3 subscribers moving the transactions over to the subscribers, instantaneously I hope! What seems to be happening is that when using the "Insert Tracer" function, replication take publisher to distributor < 2 seconds, but to replicate to the subscribers can take over 7 minutes (and these are local databases on a SAN). This could be for 2 reasons: The SQL statements used to query the database are obtaining locks which are stopping the transactions updating the subscribers. The subscribers are just too busy for the replication to apply the changes. What seems to trouble me more, is that although the Replication Monitor / Insert Tracer are showing these statistics, if you use the "View Subscription Details" and then click Start, it will sync within seconds. My goal would be to have the data syncing (ideally) continuously, or every minute, perhaps I should reduce the batch size of the transactions? What am I doing wrong? [Note that the -Continuous flag is set!]

• Which Maven Glassfish plugin to use?

  I've been trying to integrate deploying java .war's in Glassfish V3 through Maven. While I have found a few plugins, none of them look to be very active: Maven Glassfish Plugin Eskato's Wordpress Blog on Maven And I got the most information out of Eskato's Blog, it was written March 2008, so I don't know what the state of Glassfish Maven integration is, nor can I find a suitable plugin to work with. With the Maven Glassfish Plugin I have had some success, but it still doesn't work entirely well for all goals it says it supports, which makes some of the commands ineffective. Has anyone else been able to integrate Glassfish V3 and Maven successfully? If so, what resources did you use to get it done?

• Is it possible to have asynchronous processing

  Hi, I have a requirement where I need to send continuous updates to my clients. Client is browser in this case. We have some data which updates every sec, so once client connects to our server, we maintain a persistent connection and keep pushing data to the client. I am looking for suggestions of this implementation at the server end. Basically what I need is this: 1. client connects to server. I maintain the socket and metadata about the socket. metadata contains what updates need to be send to this client 2. server process now waits for new client connections 3. One other process will have the list of all the sockets opened and will go through each of them and send the updates if required. Can we do something like this in Apache module: 1. Apache process gets the new connection. It maintains the state for the connection. It keeps the state in some global memory and returns back to root process to signify that it is done so that it can accept the new connection 2. the Apache process though has returned the status to root process but it is also executing in parallel where it going through its global store and sending updates to the client, if any. So can a Apache process do these things: 1. Have more than one connection associated with it 2. Asynchronously waiting for new connection and at the same time processing the previous connections? • Java function changing input

  I would like to go from one number to another. For example if I started at 6 and my goal was 10 I want a function that on every pass would bring me from 6 towards 10 or if I had the number 14 and my goal was 9 it would count down from 14 towards 9.So far I have (this is written in Processing a Java Api but there is essentially no difference from regualr Java, draw is just a continuous loop) int x=100; void draw(){ x=towards(x,10); println(x); } int towards(int current ,int target){ if(current!=target){ if (current <target){ current=current+1; } else { current=current-1; } } return current; } this gives me the results I would like but I would like to have everything in side of the towards() function. When I replace X with a variable it of course resets it self to the static variable. To sum it up how can I pass a variable to a function and have that variable thats been passed change on every subsequent pass. I have looked into recursion as a solution but that of just brings me to a final solution. I can pass the count to an array but wouldn't like to do that either.
