• What's the lastest version of Openstack that I can deploy with Juju? Where can find this information?

  I've been trying to deploy openstack. I thought Havana was the latest, but deployed nova cloud controller, and the log said 2013-10-24 19:13:25 INFO juju juju-log.go:66 nova-cloud-controller/0: FATAL ERROR: Invalid Cloud Archive release specified: precise-updates/havana. Is there somewhere to see what the latest Juju deployable (with the standard repositories) version is? Or am I just using the wrong format when I specify openstack-origin: cloud:precise-updates/havana in the config?

• WCF Routing Service Filter Generator

  Recently I've been working with the WCF routing service and in our case we were simply routing based on the SOAP Action. This is a pretty good approach for a standard redirection of the message when all messages matching a SOAP Action will go to the same endpoint. Using the SOAP Action also lets you be specific about which methods you expose via the router. One of the things which was a pain was the number of routing rules I needed to create because we were routing for a lot of different methods. I could have explored the option of using a regular expression to match the message to its routing but I wanted to be very specific about what's routed and not risk exposing methods I shouldn't via the router. I decided to put together a little spreadsheet so that I can generate part of the configuration I would need to put in the configuration file rather than have to type this by hand. To show how this works download the spreadsheet from the following url: https://s3.amazonaws.com/CSCBlogSamples/WCF+Routing+Generator.xlsx In the spreadsheet you will see that the squares in green are the ones which you need to amend. In the below picture you can see that you specify a prefix and suffix for the filter name. The core namespace from the web service your generating routing rules for and the WCF endpoint name which you want to route to. In column A you will see the green cells where you add the list of method names which you want to include routing rules for. The spreadsheet will workout what the full SOAP Action would be then the name you will use for that filter in your WCF Routing filters. In column D the spreadsheet will have generated the XML snippet which you can add to the routing filters section in your configuration file. In column E the spreadsheet will have created the XML snippet which you can add to the routing table to send messages matching each filter to the appropriate WCF client endpoint to forward the message to the required destination. Hopefully you can see that with this spreadsheet it would be very easy to produce accurate XML for the WCF Routing configuration if you had a large number of routing rules. If you had additional methods in other services you can simply copy the worksheet and add multiple copies to the Excel workbook. One worksheet per service would work well.

• Why would a process monitoring script use exit 1; on finding no problems?

  General question: On a Linux (Centos) server, if a process monitoring script run by cron is set to close with exit 1; rather than exit 0; on finding that everything is okay and that no action is needed, is that a mistake? Or are there legitimate reasons for calling exit 1; instead of exit 0; on the "Everything's fine, no action needed" condition? exit 0; on finding no problems seems to me to be more appropriate. But maybe there's something I'm not aware of. For example, maybe there's something specific to Cron? Or maybe there's a convention in process monitoring scripts that 'failure' means 'this script failed to need to fix a problem' (rather than what I would expect which is that exit 1; would mean 'the process being monitored has failed'?) My specific case: I'm looking at a process monitoring script written by my web hosting company. By process monitoring script, I mean a script executed by Cron on a regular basis that checks if an important system process is running, and if it isn't running, takes actions such as mailing an administrator or restarting the process. Here's the (generalised) structure of their script, for a service running on port 8080 (in this case, Apache Tomcat): SERVICE=$(/usr/sbin/lsof -i tcp:8080 | wc -l); if [ $SERVICE != 0 ]; then exit 1; else #take action fi Seems simple enough even for someone with limited knowledge like me, except the exit 1; part seems odd. As I understand it, exit 0; closes a program and signifies to the parent that executed the program that everything is fine, exit n; where n0 and n<127 signifies that there has been some kind of error or problem. Here, their script seems to go against that rule - it calls exit 1; in the condition where everything is fine, and doesn't exit after taking remedial action in the problem condition. To me, this looks like a mistake - but my experience in this area is limited. Are there cases where calling exit 1; in the "Everything's fine, no action needed" condition is more appropriate than calling exit 0;? Or is it a mistake? Wider context is pretty simple. It's a Centos VPS, running Plesk. The script is being called by Cron via Plesk's "Scheduled tasks" Cron manager. There's no custom layer between Cron and this script that would respond in an unusual way to the exit call. It's a fairly average, almost out-of-the box Plesk-managed Centos VPS (in so far as there is such a thing). The process being monitored by this script is Apache Tomcat.

I just reformated and installed 12.04 on this old Windows XP machine, and I don't know where to get the firmware for this. • DirectX works for 64-bit but not 32-bit

  I'm trying to play a game (Civilization 5) which was previously working but no longer. I believe I've narrowed it down to a DirectX issue because I get an error running dxdiag.exe in 32 bit mode. My goal (at least I believe) is to get Direct3D Acceleration "Enabled" in dxdiag (as it is in 64 bit dxdiag). A very similar issue is here: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-gaming/direct3d-acceleration-is-not-available-in-windows/4c345e6e-dc68-e011-8dfc-68b599b31bf5?page=1 The proposed answer, which looks very promising, doesn't seem to work for me. Like other users in that thread, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Direct3D\Drivers does not have a SoftwareOnly key to change. I even tried manually adding it as a string and dword, to no avail. I have a NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M, and before you ask, yes I've tried updating (also uninstalling, reinstalling) my drivers. I've also tried doing the same with DirectX (and Civilization 5 for that matter). Been debugging for some 4+ hours now after a full day of work and I've run out of ideas. I'm hoping somebody knows the solution here! :) Here's what I see when I open dxdiag: DxDiag has detected that there mgiht have been a problem accessing Direct3D the last time this program was used. • Yet Another ASP.NET MVC CRUD Tutorial

  I know that I have not posted much on MVC, mostly because I don’t use it on my daily life, but since I find it so interesting, and since it is gaining such popularity, I will be talking about it much more. This time, it’s about the most basic of scenarios: CRUD. Although there are several ASP.NET MVC tutorials out there that cover ordinary CRUD operations, I couldn’t find any that would explain how we can have also AJAX, optimistic concurrency control and validation, using Entity Framework Code First, so I set out to write one! I won’t go into explaining what is MVC, Code First or optimistic concurrency control, or AJAX, I assume you are all familiar with these concepts by now. Let’s consider an hypothetical use case, products. For simplicity, we only want to be able to either view a single product or edit this product. Let’s see what we have: A class Product, that maps to a product record on the database; A product has a required (RequiredAttribute) Name property which can contain up to 50 characters (StringLengthAttribute); The product’s Price must be a decimal value between 1 and 100 (RangeAttribute); It contains a set of order details, for each time that it has been ordered, which we will not talk about (Details); The record’s primary key (mapped to property ProductId) comes from a SQL Server IDENTITY column generated by the database (KeyAttribute, DatabaseGeneratedAttribute); The table uses a SQL Server ROWVERSION (previously known as TIMESTAMP) column for optimistic concurrency control mapped to property RowVersion (TimestampAttribute). The other thing is the included JavaScript files: jQuery, jQuery UI and unobtrusive validations. Also, I am not using the Content extension method for translating relative URLs, because that way I would lose JavaScript intellisense for jQuery functions. OK, so, at this moment, I want to add support for AJAX and optimistic concurrency control. It returns a JSON object, which is what you would normally use for AJAX requests, containing three properties: Success: a boolean flag; RowVersion: the current version of the ROWVERSION column as a Base-64 string; ProductId: the inserted product id, as coming from the database. If the product is new, it will be inserted into the database, and its primary key will be returned into the ProductId property. Success will be set to true; If a DbUpdateConcurrencyException occurs, it means that the value in the RowVersion property does not match the current ROWVERSION column value on the database, so the record must have been modified between the time that the page was loaded and the time we attempted to save the product. In this case, the controller just gets the new value from the database and returns it in the JSON object; Success will be false. Otherwise, it will be updated, and Success, ProductId and RowVersion will all have their values set accordingly. So let’s see how we can react to these situations on the client side. Specifically, we want to deal with these situations: The user is not logged in when the update/create request is made, perhaps the cookie expired; The optimistic concurrency check failed; All went well. It then saves the current values of the ProductId and RowVersion properties to their respective hidden fields. They will be sent on each successive post and will be used in determining if the request is for adding a new product or to updating an existing one.   I have a Asus EEE PC 1005P which I installed a Command-line system on using the Alternate Installer CD of Ubuntu Lucid Lynx. Altough I think this is a general linux and grub2 question. I do not have (or want) the X Window System installed. I want to change my console screen resolution (not inside X) to 1024x600. • Does a 3ware "ECC-ERROR" matter on a JBOD when I have ZFS?

  I have a FreeBSD 8.x machine running ZFS and with a 3ware 9690SA controller. ZFS does not currently detect any errors. zpool status says No known data errors My question: Is this ECC-ERROR something that I need to be concerned about? According to the 3ware CLI 9.5.2 Manual, an ECC-ERROR means that the 3ware controller caught a read-error for one or more sectors on this drive. This sometimes occurs when a RAID array is recovering from a failed disk. I believe that ECC-ERRORS can also be detected when the 3ware Controller verifies each disk. None of the drives have failed and thus there was no drive rebuild, so I assume that 3ware discovered a bad sector when it ran it's weekly auto-verify scan of the disks. Is this a safe assumption? According to our logs, ZFS has not detected any bad sectors on this drive. ZFS can work around read errors -- if ZFS detects a bad sector on the drive, it will simply mark that sector as bad and never use it again. From the ZFS perspective one bad sector isn't a big deal, although it might indicate that the drive is starting to go bad.

• No internet access when using static IP

  I have just upgraded to Windows 8.1, and after the upgrade process is finished, I can't connect to internet. I tried running the "Troubleshoot problems": It concluded that DHCP needs to be activated: I let it activate DHCP, and I got internet connection back. The problem is I want to set this PC to a certain IP address (the IP address that it has been using all this time). I am also using Hyper-V, which I suspect has something to do with this problem. After I regained internet connection, I tried running one of my Hyper-V VM. From inside the VM I can connect to internet. That VM has static IP address. I also noticed that in "Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections", I usually have a network connection called vEthernet (Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller Virtual Switch). I didn't find it there after upgrade. How do I set my PC to a static IP while retaining internet access in Windows 8.1? EDIT I have managed to recreate vEthernet (Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller Virtual Switch) by unchecking Allow management operating system to share this network adapter in Hyper-V's Virtual Switch Manager and then checking it again. But when I changed the adapter to use static IP, it still can't connect to internet. • Managing multiple IMAP accounts in Thunderbird

  I've been using Thunderbird for years without issues with 20+ pop3 accounts. I'm moving over to imap which will enable me to keep copies of the emails locally and on the server whilst keeping everthing synchronised. However I'm looking for the best way to manage multiple imap accounts on Thunderbird. Currently I have a filter that copies all the emails into a central inbox and into seperate local folders. The reason for this is I go through my inbox daily and delete all emails that don't require any action. I move any emails that require action to my "action" imap account folder. This way I can syncronise all the emails that require action across multiple computers (and mobile devices). This technique is my implemantion of the GTD or Getting things Done philosophy. I also copy over each email into seperate local folders. The reason I do this is just in case any emails on the imap accounts get deleted, or something drastic happens on the server which means I lose all the emails. My business partner has access to some of these emails and still uses pop3 (with "leave copy on server" checked), but I know sometimes Thunderbird can still delete emails off the server sometimes. The problem with the above is that thunderbird gives me the dreaded error dialogue saying that the emails cannot be filtered due to another process. I find the folder list in Thunderbird hard to manage. Here is a screenshot of part of my folder list- as you can see it's a bit of a complicated list and not easy to manage: What would be the best way of me managing multiple imap accounts whilst allowing me to have copies put in a central folder and emails in local folders? It would be useful if people think this is necessary, as perhaps there is a betterway? How do people manage multiple imap accounts in a way that allows them to keep on top of actionable emails? I'd be interested in how others manage this. I've never used the Thunderbird-based client "Postbox", does this handle multiple imaps better?

• RAID administration in Debian Lenny

  I've got an old box that I don't want to scrap yet because it's got a nice working 5-disk RAID assembly. I want to create 2 arrays: RAID 1 with 2 disks and RAID 5 with the other 3 disks. The RAID card is Intel SRCU31L. I can create the RAID 1 volume in the console that you access with Ctrl+C at startup. But it only allows for creation of one volume so I can't do anything with the 3 remaining disks. I installed Debian Lenny on the RAID 1 volume and it worked out nicely. What utilites could I now use to create/manage the RAID volumes in Debian Linux? I installed the raidutils package but get an error when trying to fetch a list: #raidutil -L controller or #raidutil -L physical # raidutil -L controller osdOpenEngine : 11/08/110-18:16:08 Fatal error, no active controller device files found. Engine connect failed: Open What could I try to get this thing working? Can you suggest any other tools? • Computer hangs at boot screen with new RAID card

  I am trying to build a new server around a Biostar TH61 motherboard and an Adaptec 6405E RAID controller card. The machine booted fine from USB before the RAID card and drives were installed. After installing, on the first boot the card was detected, but then started to spit out the following message every 10 seconds: Error: Controller Kernel Stopped Running << Press any key to continue ... Following the troubleshooting guide I unplugged everything, reseated the card, and reattached all the drives. This time the machine is sitting on the boot screen without any error messages and flashing a cursor, but after 15 minutes of this, nothing seems to be happening. Given that there are no error messages I'm hesitant to reboot again. Is it normal for a RAID card to sit without a status message when it firsts boots, maybe to initialise the drives or something? The current screen output looks a bit like this: Controller #00 found at PCI Slot:01, Bus:01, Dev:00, Func:00 Controller Model: Adaptec 6405E Firmware Version: 5.2-0[18512] Memory Size: 128MB Serial number: 111111111111111 SAS WWN: 50000D1104AE9180 _ Update: So after waiting 30 minutes I've rebooted back to the Kernal Stopped Running error. • hp proliant dl360 disk diagnostic issue

  We recently got two used drives (15000) and installed on our HP proliant dl360 G5 server. Created RAID1 and used HP SmartStart CD to perform diagnostics. Interestingly, the Diagnostic tab immidiately fails on Logical drive testing saying the Disk1 should be replaced, while the Test tab successfully runs all the complete tests on both disks and does not find any issue. At the meantime, when booting to esxi 5, vSphere periodically shows the Disk1 as Unknown and Logical drive in recovery process. This happens every 5-10 minutes. Here is the log from HP SmartScan diagnostic: 1 - Device, Test: Logical Drive 1, Storage Controller in Slot 0 1 - Description: The controller has reported a critical error in the drive error log. 1 - Recommended Repair: This drive should be replaced. 1 - Failed Count: 44 1 - Error code: F157 There is also another error log record (see below): 2 - Device, Test: test_components/libstorage.so ID 2 - Description: An unexpected exception occurred while performing an operation. • SATA Driver for Acer Aspire One D257

  i have a Acer Aspire One D257. In this netbook the hard disk is defect so i bought a new one. Now i want to reinstall Windows 7. Im using an external DVD Drive plugged into USB. The Windows 7 DVD is staring, Win7 setup is starting and when it comes to Hard Drive options it says that no drive was detected and i should try search for drivers. It shows me this window: Screenshot from web Now i cant find the right drivers for this netbook to continue with the installation. The laptop has the newest BIOS - 1.15, it is reset to factory default settings except that i enabled the Boot Menu prompt with F12. From the Acer Support Website i've downloaded the SATA AHCI Driver and the Chipset Driver. I unpacked both to a USB flashdrive in seperate folders. When i select the SATA AHCI Driver it does not find any drivers. When i uncheck the checkbox "Hide drivers that are not compatible with hardware on this computer" it shows one driver: Acer HWID (path_to\1.inf). When i continue with this driver i got an error message that says something like: No new devices found. Check if the driver files are on the installation disk. When i show him the Chipset Driver it sees a lot more driver. When i uncheck the checkbox "Hide drivers that are not compatible with hardware on this computer" it show some drivers: Intel N10 Family DMI Bridge Intel N10/ICH7 Family PCI Express Root Port Intel N10/ICH7 SMBUS Controller Intel N10/ICH7 Family USB Universal Host Controller Intel N10/ICH7 Family USB2 Enhanced Host Controller Intel N10/ICH7 Family Interface LPC Controller When i uncheck this checkbox i get a lot more drivers, and some SATA Drivers but the also do not work. I get the same error message as before. Can someone help me find a driver that should work or am i doing anything else wrong?

• Time sync fails on Hyper-V VM, but succeeds when I log in as a domain user

  We have a Windows Server 2003 SP2 VM running on Hyper-V (Server 2008 R2 host). The VM has Hyper-V time synchronization enabled. I noticed that the time on the VM was fast by around 25 minutes. I saw the following in the event log: The time provider NtpClient is configured to acquire time from one or more time sources, however none of the sources are currently accessible. No attempt to contact a source will be made for 15 minutes. NtpClient has no source of accurate time. The time provider NtpClient cannot reach or is currently receiving invalid time data from ourdc.ourdomain.local (ntp.d|192.168.2.18:123-192.168.2.2:123). Time Provider NtpClient: No valid response has been received from domain controller ourdc.ourdomain.local after 8 attempts to contact it. This domain controller will be discarded as a time source and NtpClient will attempt to discover a new domain controller from which to synchronize. I had been logged in as a local user. (We have an old app that runs on this VM - it requires a user to be logged in at all times, and we use a non-domain user account for this.) When I logged in as a domain user, the clock almost immediately corrected itself. Running "w32tm /monitor" and "net time" as the domain user showed no errors, and indicated that our domain controller was the time source. Does anyone know what might cause this, and why logging in under a domain account fixes the problem? I'm wondering if the time will start to drift again. Thanks for your help, Richard
