• Can I make the Courier email server use a non-default salt for passwords?

  I'm setting up email server for the first time and confused with strange thing. I have several user accounts which stored in previous server. Passwords for this accounts are in plain text. But I want to create crypts for them. MySQL (where my users will be stored) have function encrypt(passwd, salt). If no salt given used random value. I discovered that Courier uses one certain salt and crypted all passwords with it. So the task done. But I'd like to know if there's a way to define my own salt for my pop3 server?

  I just made a silly mistake on my Ubuntu Server box: I added myself to a group using usermod -G, after which I discovered the -a option... The result is that I am now out of the admin group, and lost my sudo rights. I can sort that out, but I want to know what other groups I may been removed from? My user was the first one so what I'm looking for is a list of groups that the first user gets added to at installation time.

  From the official Microsoft docs: Detecting the Idle State The Task Scheduler service will verify that the computer is in an idle state every 15 minutes. The computer is considered idle if all the processors and all the disks were idle for more than 90% of the past 15 minutes and if there is no keyboard or mouse input during this period of time. Besides, any presentation type application that sets the ES_DISPLAY_REQUIRED flag will make Task Scheduler to not consider the system as being idle. In Windows 7, Task Scheduler considers a processor as idle even when low priority threads (thread priority < normal) execute. Is there any way to change the time to less than 15 minutes minutes? Am I assuming this hard-coded and impossible? My Google-fu has eluded me so far and I found nothing, but wanted to check here before giving up.

• How can I connect to a CIFS/SMB share on a non-default port?

  I'm trying to get a contractor connected to a CIFS share (port 445). He's not a big shop (so no go on using VPN). His ISP blocks outgoing connections on port 445. I've been doing some rsync to ftp madness as a workaround to have the share available to him, but it's getting out of control -- we're syncing nearly 40GB a day to an external ftp site and it's going to be much easier just to have him connect and only grab the stuff he needs. So... I can have the CIFS share open to the internet (filtered to allow access to his IP only) on port 446. How the heck can he connect to that? I looked through "net use" and didn't see anything about using another port.

  My question is very basic in nature. Is the mount point for external media (like USB) always /media? Because in a Debian system, if I plug in any USB device that goes to the /media folder. So is it the case with all the other Linux flavors like Fedora, Ubuntu, etc. If a USB device is automatically mounted will it always go to the /media directory?

  So the same code works on my ubuntu server but when I upload it to my dedicated hosting server running CentOS it seems to add an extra prefix of .:/usr/share/pear:/usr/share/php: I tried setting includepath to different things but it just doesn't work. the file is in a directory called language in the same folder as the file that is including it and I'm using : include dirname(FILE).DIRECTORY_SEPARATOR."language".DIRECTORY_SEPARATOR."storage.inc"; and include dirname(__FILE__)."/language/language.php"; and include "language/language.php"; and alot of other combinations but I can't get it to find the file.   I have been using Bugzilla fine on the older 32-bit Windows Home Server and I have now started a migration to the newer Windows Home Server 2011 with a new machine and a fresh Bugzilla install of 3.6.3. All goes well until I try to check out the email action and I get 'Could not perform this operation because the defaulty mail client in not properly installed. Is this a security /firewall issue? I dont know enough about servers to know what to look for, so any help will be gratefully appreciated. Thanks.

• Why do Windows 7 & 8 have different default behaviour when trying to modify contents of protected folder

  Here's the situation: I have a Windows 7 PC and a Windows 8 PC and I'm logged in as the same domain user on both machines. My domain user is in the local Administrator group on both. When I run cmd.exe on each machine and then attempt to do this (also on both machines) mkdir "c:\Program Files\cheese" the Windows 8 PC gives an "Access Denied" error, while it works fine on the Windows 7 PC. I understand that C:\Program Files is a protected folder and I'm not interested in a debate on the morals of writing to such a folder directly. But I am interested in understanding what exactly has changed in Windows 8 to cause this. I don't seem to be able to find anything that acknowledges or explains this change in behaviour in Windows 8.

  I did something weird and now my text size is like 3pt on every system window, but when I go in and change my window fonts to larger to something that looks normal, it makes my clock, bash, and other fonts absolutely gigantic. Is there any way I can just roll back my system and it's settings? It wouldn't be much bother as I installed the OS yesterday. I'd hate to have to reinstall entirely though, but I guess it's an option.

How can I change this behavior, and force git to create patches with ANSI or UTF-8 without BOM character encoding? It causes a problem because UCS-2 Little Endian encoded patches can not be applied, I have to manually convert it to ANSI.
