• SubSonic-based app that connects to multiple databases

  Hello there, I currently developed an app that connects to SQL Server 2005 database, so my DAL objects where generated using information from that DB. It will also be possible to connect to an Oracle and MySQL db, all with the same table structures (aside from the normal differences in fields, such as varbinary(max) in SQL Server and BLOB in Oracle, and so on). For this purpose, I already defined multiple connection strings and multiple SubSonic providers for the different DB's the app will run on. My question is, if I generated my objects using a SQL Server database, should the generated objects work transparently with the other DB's or do I need to generate a different DAL for each database engine I use? Should I be aware of any possible bugs I may encounter while performing these operations? Thanks in advance for any advice on this issue.

  In Rails 3, how do you change the default primary key type to, say, BIGINT UNSIGNED NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT PRIMARY KEY In my case I'm only interested in MySQL. For Rails 2, you can see the answer to "How do I use long IDs in Rails?"1 In Rails 3, however, this will throw an error. I'm not sure if that's because the class is no long used, or if the code needs to go in the same place. You can see in active_record/connection_adapters/mysql_adapter.rb that the NATIVE_DATABASE_TYPES constant is still defined. What's the correct way to achieve the same effect in Rails 3?

• Seeking Functional Programming Lexicon

  Hi, Knowing the argot of a field helps me a lot, especially since it allows me to converse intelligently with those who know a lot more than I, so I would like to find a good lexicon of Functional Programming terms. E.g., I repeatedly encounter these: Functor, Arrow, Category, Kleisli, Monad, Monoid, a veritable zoo of Morphisms, etc. I also notice many of these appear with prefixes such as "covariant", "co-", "endo-" etc. Of these, I can say I actually understand Monoid and Covariant and sort of get Monad, but the rest are still gibberish to me. (Note that I don't mean this list as exhaustive and I'm not looking to have these defined or described for me here, I'm looking for learning resources.) Can someone point me towards an FP lexicon? It need not be on-line, as long as it's possible to find it (and it's not a rare volume for which I'd have to pay many tens of dollars).

• Are ORM's counterproductive to OO design?

  In OOD, design of an object is said to be characterized by its identity and behavior. Having used OR/M's in the past, the primary purpose, in my opinion, revolves around the ability to store/retrieve data. That is to say, OR/M objects are not design by behavior, but rather data (i.e. database tables). Case and point: Many OR/M tools come with a point-to-a-database-table-and-click-object-generator. If objects are no longer characterized by behavior this will, in my opinion, muddy the identity and responsibility of the objects. Subsequently, if objects are not defined by a responsibility this could lend a hand to having tightly coupled classes and overall poor design. Furthermore, I would think that in an application setting, you would be heading towards scalability issues. So, my question is, do you think that ORM's are counterproductive to OO design? Perhaps the underlying question would be whether or not they are counterproductive to application development.

However, if I put www.domain2.com, everything works fine. I don't see any difference between two VirtualHost config block, so I wonder what does make the difference.   I have defined alias that looks like this: Alias /pictures/sm/ /var/www/my_site/data/_active_thumbnails/ Later in the VirtualHost section have: DocumentRoot /var/www/my_site/sites/www.my_site.com/htdocs RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteRule ^/thumbnails/(.*)\.(jpg|JPG) /images/stg-list-img.png [PT,L] What I'm trying to do is to display /images/stg-list-img.png placeholder image only if the original image does not exist on the drive. Right now it's replacing all the images from /thumbnails/. It looks like the RewriteCond is not aware about the Alias. Is there the way to overcome it? Thanks

  I am looking for a free static checker for C99 code (including GCC extensions) with the ability to explicitly say "these preprocessor macros are always defined." I need that last part because I am compiling embedded code for a single target processor. The compiler (Microchip's C32, GCC based) sets a macro based on the selected processor, which is then used in the PIC32 header files to select a processor-specific header file to include. cppcheck therefore fails because it detects the 30 different #ifdefs used to select one of the many possible PIC32 processors, tries to analyse all possible combinations of these plus all other #defines, and fails. • URL Routing with WebForms, what to do with additional querystrings like page number, filter, etc?

  I am switching from Intelligencia's UrlRewriter to the new web forms routing in ASP.NET 4.0. I have it working great for basic pages, however, in my e-commerce site, when browsing category pages, I previously used querystrings that were built into my pager control to control paging. An old url (with UrlRewriting) would be: http://www.mysite.com/Category/Arts-and-Crafts_17 I have a MapPageRoute defined in global.asax as: routes.MapPageRoute("category-browse", "Category/{name}_{id}", ~/CategoryPage.aspx"); This works great. Now, somebody clicks to go to page 2. Previously I would have just tacked on ?page=2 as the querystring. Now, How do I handle this using web forms routing? I know I can do something like: http://www.mysite.com/Category/Arts-and-Crafts_17/page/2 But in addition to page, I can have filters, age ranges, gender, etc. Should I just keep defining routes that handle these variables, or should I continue using querystrings and can I define a route that allows me to use my querstrings like before?

  Hello, I have recently been introduced to EasyMock and have been asked to develop some unit tests for a FileMonitor class using it. The FileMonitor class is based on a timed event that wakes up and checks for file modification(s) in a defined list of files and directories. I get how to do this using the actual file system, write a test that writes to a file and let the FileMonitor do its thing. So, how do I do this using EasyMock?   I AM GETTING THE FOLLOWING ERROR IN A VERY SIMPLE CLASS LIBRARY: Error 1 Unable to copy file "obj\Debug\SMIT.SysAdmin.BusinessLayer.Resources.resources" to "obj\Debug\SMIT.SysAdmin.BusinessLayer.SMIT.SysAdmin.BusinessLayer.Resources.resources". Could not find file 'obj\Debug\SMIT.SysAdmin.BusinessLayer.Resources.resources'. SMIT.SysAdmin.BusinessLayer Going to the Project Properties-Resource tab, I see that I defined do resources. Still, I tried to delete the resource file and recreate by going to the resource tab. When I recompile, I still get the same error. Any suggestions of things to try?

Apache APR, for example, use the well known version numbering scheme <major>.<minor>.<patch> example: 4.5.11 Maven suggests a similar but more detailed schema: <major>.<minor>.<patch>-<qualifier>-<build number> example: 4.5.11-RC1-3732 Where is the Maven versioning scheme defined? Are there conventions for qualifier and build number? Probably it is a bad idea to use maven but not to follow the Maven version scheme ... What other version numbering schemes do you know?   I'm in the process of styling an asp.net menu and I'm trying to understand the meaning of the StaticSelectedStyle-CssClass and StaticHoverStyle-CssClass parameters. My understanding is that the styles defined with these parameters are applied as CSS classes to the relevant elements, whenever needed. So I created my menu as follows: <asp:Menu ID="NavigationMenu" DataSourceID="NavigationSiteMapDataSource" StaticMenuStyle-CssClass="StaticMenuStyle" StaticMenuItemStyle-CssClass="StaticMenuItemStyle" StaticSelectedStyle-CssClass="StaticSelectedStyle" StaticHoverStyle-CssClass="StaticHoverStyle" Orientation="Horizontal" MaximumDynamicDisplayLevels="0" runat="server"> </asp:Menu> It works for StaticMenuStyle-CssClass and StaticMenuStyle-CssClass (the classes are applied to the relevant elements), but StaticSelectedStyle-CssClass and StaticHoverStyle-CssClass are not applied, regardless of the selected or hover status of an element. • How to highlight clicks in app widget?

  Hi everyone, I have an app widget which runs neatly. However, I am unable to highlight a click on a linked item. I've seen it in the standard app widgets like 'Music' and 'Power Control', for instance. Moreover, I've also been studying the Music app widget's source at album_appwidget.xml. The only thing I could think of is the LinearLayout defined at lines 23-35 which states android:clickable="true" Unfortunately, this does not work for me. So does anyone have a hint on how to highlight a click on an app widget? I've tried the LinearLayout, TextView and Button. None of them displayed a border as a highlight. Thanks in advance, Steff

• Creating WCF DataContracts dynamically from code

  Given the fact that I have a fully dynamic object model, that is, I have no concrete classes defined anywhere in code, but I still want to be able to create WCF DataContracts for them so I can use them in operations. How can I achieve this? My concrete class "Entity" implements ICustomTypeDescriptor which is used to present the various properties to the outside world, but my expeimentation with WCF suggests that WCF does not care about ICustomTypeDescriptor. Is this correct or have I missed something? Is this possible? It cannot be so that the only way to create a DataContract is to actually have a concrete harcoded class, can it?

  I know I'm able to this in PHP, but I can't remember the name or the way to do it, so I'll just explain what it is, and when someone tells me how it's called I'll update this question. I have some error messages defined as constants on javascript, however, some of those messages need to contain dynamic part as in the following example. "The username must be between 4 and 20 characters" In php, If I'm not mistaken there was some option for storing that string in a way that when called it would replace the variables with the data provided on the call. I want to do that on javascript, something like: config['string',vars] And have javascript insert those vars inside the string so it's customized. Wow, this must be the worst question I've made! I'm sorry for the lack of information, I'm kinda braindead on Sundays.

• C++ Mutexes and STL Lists Across Subclasses

  I am currently writing a multi-threaded C++ server using Poco and am now at the point where I need to be keeping information on which users are connected, how many connections each of them have, and given it is a proxy server, where each of those connections are proxying through to. For this purpose I have created a ServerStats class which holds an STL list of ServerUser objects. The ServerStats class includes functions which can add and remove objects from the list as well as find a user in the list an return a pointer to them so I can access member functions within any given ServerUser object in the list. The ServerUser class contains an STL list of ServerConnection objects and much like the ServerStats class it contains functions to add, remove and find elements within this list. Now all of the above is working but I am now trying to make it threadsafe. I have defined a Poco::FastMutex within the ServerStats class and can lock/unlock this in the appropriate places so that STL containers are not modified at the same time as being searched for example. • PLT Scheme Extracting field ids from structures

  I want to see if I can map PLT Scheme structure fields to columns in a DB. I've figured out how to extract accessor functions from structures in PLT scheme using the fourth return value of: (struct-type-info) However the returned procedure indexes into the struct using an integer. Is there some way that I can find out what the field names were at point of definition? Looking at the documentation it seems like this information is "forgotten" after the structure is defined and exists only via the generated-accessor functions: (<id>-<field-id> s). So I can think of two possible solutions: Search the namespace symbols for ones that start with my struct name (yuk); Define a custom define-struct macro that captures the ordered sequence of field-names inside some hash that is keyed by struct name (eek).

• Is it possible to load ListPreference items from an adapter?

  I'm setting out to create a settings activity for my app. I've defined a PreferenceActivity with a nice layout including a ListPreference object for the user to select a bluetooth device. I'm having trouble dynamically populating the list. I would like to populate ListPreference with values from an array adapter (which I'll create and populate with relevant bluetooth device names). If this were a spinner View, I could just call setAdapter(). However with the ListPreference object I can't figure out how to attach an adapter (findviewByID won't cast from View To ListPreference, so I can't even get a handle to the object). I would like to attach an adapter and then populate the adapter with values, which in turn would populate the ListPreference with values.

• Using info.plist for storing target-specific values for a multi-target app

  I have a multi-target iPhone app which currently includes a header file with constant definitions that are conditionally included at build time depending on which target is being built. However, I was wondering if it might be better to instead include this information in the info.plist for the build, as this generally holds target-specific meta, so logically seems more appropriate. Therefore, my questions are: Is it acceptable to include custom (non-Apple defined) keys in the info.plist file? Is this a suitable place to include meta for the app which changes between targets?

• Decimal numbers works in iPhone simulator but NOT on iPhone device

  Hi everybody, I noticed a weird behaviour of iPhone OS when using decimal values. The simulator parse them from strings in a correct way but when I test the app on my iPhone it lose the decimal part.   I need to escape \n so on output I really get newline or tab $ perl -p -e 's/e/a/ge' now I want each e to be substituted with \n $ perl -p -e 's/e/\n/ge' but even \n gives me an error. this was a simplified example. In real script(makefile) I have substitute := perl -p -e 's/@([^@]+)@/defined $$ENV{$$1} ? $$ENV{$$1} : $$1/ge' and in target I have such a nice command $(substitute) $< > $@ and if the input file for perl contains \n at output I will see it literally... I want to have real newline.

  I am trying to add the path /_vti_bin/Lists.asmx to my ASP.NET MVC 2 web application. I am registering the route as follows: routes.IgnoreRoute("{resource}.asmx/{*pathInfo}"); routes.Add(new Route("_vti_bin/Lists.asmx", new ListsHandler())); where ListHandler is defined as: public sealed class ListsHandler : IRouteHandler { #region IRouteHandler Members public IHttpHandler GetHttpHandler(RequestContext requestContext) { throw new NotImplementedException(); } #endregion } But when I start the MVC application and try to navigate to http://localhost:8888/_vti_bin/Lists.asmx, I get an HTTP 404 error, rather than an exception raised. Is this even possible in MVC? Do I need to add an Lists.asmx ASPX web service file to my project in a particular place (I cannot create the _vti_bin folder in the Visual Studio project)?
