• Android Layout + Programming

  I'm trying to create a "scrollable" layout in Android. Even using developers.android.com, though, I feel a little bit lost at the moment. I'm somewhat new to Java, but not so much that I feel I should be having these issues--being new to Android is the bigger problem right now. The layout I'm trying to create should scroll in a sort of a "grid". I THINK what I'm looking for is the Gallery view, but I'm really lost as to how to implement it at the moment. I want it to "snap" to center the frame, like in the actual Gallery application. Essentially, if I had a photo gallery of 9 pictures, the idea is to scroll between them up/down AND side to side, in a 3x3 manner. Doesn't need to dynamically adjust, or anything like that, I just want a grid I can scroll through. I'm also not asking for anyone to give me explicit code for it--I'm trying to learn, more than anything. But pointing me in the right direction for helpful layout programming resources would be greatly appreciated, and confirming if it's a Gallery view I'm looking for would also be really helpful. • Why is Request not available for my PDF request?

  We're trying to create a .NET aspx page that will have a PDF within it. Doing this by hardcoding it is easy. <object height="1250px" width="100%" type="application/pdf" data="our.pdf"> <param value="our.pdf" name="src" /> <param value="transparent" name="wmode" /> </object> (don't worry too much about the transparent thing...we're doing that for other reasons...but I include it here "just in case".) The problem is when we want to generate the PDF dynamically. Our code to populate the literal on the front end looks like this: ltrPDF.Text = String.Format("<object height=\"1250px\" width=\"100%\" type=\"application/pdf\" data=\"ourPdfGenerator.aspx?var0={0}&var1={1}&var2={2}\">", var0, var1, var2); ltrPDF.Text += String.Format("<param value=\"ourPdfGenerator.aspx?var0={0}&var1={1}&var2={2}\">", var0, var1, var2); ltrPDF.Text += "<param value=\"transparent\" name=\"wmode\"/>"; ltrPDF.Text += "</object>"; Kind of ugly, but it seems like it should work. But it doesn't. When I debug, and put a breakpoint on the first line of ourPdfGenerator.aspx.cs Page_Load method, I reach the breakpoint without any difficulty. However, the first thing we do is try to use Request.QueryString: string var0 = Request.QueryString["var0"]; which immediately throws an HttpException: "Request is not available in this context." I'm not clear on: Why isn't it available? What can I do about it?

• Why NOT use POST method here?

  I have a classifieds website. In the main page (index) I have several form fields which the user may or may not fill in, in order to specify a detailed search of classifieds. Ex: Category: Cars Price from: 3000 Price to: 10000 Color: Red Area: California The forms' action is set to a php page: <form action='query_sql.php' method='post'> In query_sql.php I fetch the variables like this: category=$_POST['category']; etc etc... Then query MySql: $query="SELECT........WHERE category='$category' etc etc.... $results = mysql_query($query); Then I simply display the results of the query to the user by creating a table which is filled in dynamically depending on the results set. However, according to an answer by Col. Shrapnel in my previous Q I shouldn't use POST here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3004754/how-to-hide-url-from-users-when-submitting-this-form The reason I use post is simply to hide the "one-page-word-document" long URL in the browsers adress bar. I am very confused, is it okay to use POST or not? It is working fine both when I use GET or POST now... And it is already on a production server... Btw, in the linked question, I wasn't referring to make URL invisible (or hide it) I just wanted it too look better (which I have accomplished with mod_rewrite). • how to merge ecommerce transaction data between two databases

  We currently run an ecommerce solution for a leisure and travel company. Everytime we have a release, we must bring the ecommerce site down as we update database schema and the data access code. We are using a custom built ORM where each data entity is responsible for their own CRUD operations. This is accomplished by dynamically generating the SQL based on attributes in the data entity. For example, the data entity for an address would be... [tableName="address"] public class address : dataEntity { [column="address1"] public string address1; [column="city"] public string city; } So, if we add a new column to the database, we must update the schema of the database and also update the data entity. As you can expect, the business people are not too happy about this outage as it puts a crimp in their cash-flow. The operations people are not happy as they have to deal with a high-pressure time when database and applications are upgraded. The programmers are upset as they are constantly getting in trouble for the legacy system that they inherited. Do any of you smart people out there have some suggestions?

• Dynamic WCF base addresses in SharePoint

  I'm attempting to host a WCF service in SharePoint. I have configured the service to be compatible with ASP.NET to allow me access to HttpContext and session information [AspNetCompatibilityRequirements(RequirementsMode = AspNetCompatibilityRequirementsMode.Required)] public class MISDataService : IMISDataService { ... } And my configuration looks like this <system.serviceModel> <serviceHostingEnvironment aspNetCompatibilityEnabled="true" /> <services> <service name="MISDataService"> <endpoint address="" binding="webHttpBinding" contract="MISDataViews.IMISDataService" /> </service> </services> </system.serviceModel> Whilst this gives me access to the current HTTP context, the serivce is always hosted under the root domain, i.e. http://www.mydomain.com/_layouts/MISDataService.svc. In SharePoint the URL being accessed gives you specific context information about the current site via the SPContext class. So with the service hosted in a virtual directory, I would like it to be available on mulitple addresses e.g. http://www.mydomain.com/_layouts/MISDataService.svc http://www.mydomain.com/sites/site1/_layouts/MISDataService.svc http://www.mydomain.com/sites/site2/_layouts/MISDataService.svc so that the service can figure out what data to return based upon the current context. Is it possible to configure the endpoint address dynamically? Or is the only alternative to host the service in one location and then pass the "context" to it some how?

  Hello all. I am using PHP + jQuery + Fancybox in my project. I have multiple tabs that get created dynamically. I have got a star icon on every tab header and on clicking them I want to open a fancybox. My tabs are basically ul-li with following dynamic code. $("#tabs").append("<li class='current'><a class='tab' id='tab_" + tabCnt + "<a href='#loginBox_div' class='login_link'> <img src='star.png' style='cursor:pointer'/> </a>" + "<a href='javascript:void(0);' class='remove'>x</a></li>"); in my index file : $(document).ready(function() { $("a.login_link").fancybox({ 'titlePosition' : 'inside', 'transitionIn' : 'none', 'transitionOut' : 'none' }); }); The problem is that when I click on star icon of first tab, the loginBox_div (fancybox) opens properly. But when my second tab is created and when I click on its star icon, the fancybox is not opening although the class is applied in second and successive tabs. No javascript errors too. Please show me the way. Thank you.

• How to properly implement the Strategy pattern in a web MVC framework?

  In my Django app, I have a model (lets call it Foo) with a field called "type". I'd like to use Foo.type to indicate what type the specific instance of Foo is (possible choices are "Number", "Date", "Single Line of Text", "Multiple Lines of Text", and a few others). There are two things I'd like the "type" field to end up affecting; the way a value is converted from its normal type to text (for example, in "Date", it may be str(the_date.isoformat())), and the way a value is converted from text to the specified type (in "Date", it may be datetime.date.fromtimestamp(the_text)). To me, this seems like the Strategy pattern (I may be completely wrong, and feel free to correct me if I am). My question is, what's the proper way to code this in a web MVC framework? In a client-side app, I'd create a Type class with abstract methods "serialize()" and "unserialize()", override those methods in subclasses of Type (such as NumberType and DateType), and dynamically set the "type" field of a newly-instantiated Foo to the appropriate Type subclass at runtime. In a web framework, it's not quite as straightforward for me. Right now, the way that makes the most sense is to define Foo.type as a Small Integer field and define a limited set of choices (0 = "Number", 1 = "Date", 2 = "Single Line of Text", etc.) in the code. Then, when a Foo object is instantiated, use a Factory method to look at the value of the instance's "type" field and plug in the correct Type subclass (as described in the paragraph above). Foo would also have serialize() and unserialize() methods, which would delegate directly to the plugged-in Type subclass. How does this design sound? I've never run into this issue before, so I'd really like to know if other people have, and how they've solved it.

• Working with libpath with java reflection.

  I'm dynamically loading a class and calling a method on it. This class does JNI. When I call the class, java attempts to load the library. This causes an error because the library is not on the libpath. I'm calling from instead a jar so I can't easily change the libpath (especially since the library is not in the same directory or a sub directory of the jar). I do know the path of the library, but how can I load it before I load the class. • What's a good way to provide additional decoration/metadata for Python function parameters?

  We're considering using Python (IronPython, but I don't think that's relevant) to provide a sort of 'macro' support for another application, which controls a piece of equipment. We'd like to write fairly simple functions in Python, which take a few arguments - these would be things like times and temperatures and positions. Different functions would take different arguments, and the main application would contain user interface (something like a property grid) which allows the users to provide values for the Python function arguments. So, for example function1 might take a time and a temperature, and function2 might take a position and a couple of times. We'd like to be able to dynamically build the user interface from the Python code. Things which are easy to do are to find a list of functions in a module, and (using inspect.getargspec) to get a list of arguments to each function. However, just a list of argument names is not really enough - ideally we'd like to be able to include some more information about each argument - for instance, it's 'type' (high-level type - time, temperature, etc, not language-level type), and perhaps a 'friendly name' or description. So, the question is, what are good 'pythonic' ways of adding this sort of information to a function. The two possibilities I have thought of are: Use a strict naming convention for arguments, and then infer stuff about them from their names (fetched using getargspec) Invent our own docstring meta-language (could be little more than CSV) and use the docstring for our metadata. Because Python seems pretty popular for building scripting into large apps, I imagine this is a solved problem with some common conventions, but I haven't been able to find them.

  I'm using MVC and AJax.BeginForm to do some ajax updating of my page. The above code will obviously not work as the imageCrop.. parameters in the Ajax form are being filled when the page is rendered (therefore being all 0). My question is: what is the correct way to approach this situation?

  I have organized a menu. Its HTML is as follows: <ul class="topmenu"> <li><a href="sample.html">Text 1</a></li> <li><a href="sample.html">Text 2</a></li> <li><a href="sample.html">Text 3</a></li> <li><a href="sample.html">Text 4</a></li> <ul> This is a horizontal menu, so I have floated the list items to left to appear them in a horizontal line. I could have used display:inline to appear them in a single line, but since IE does not support it and I don't know any other way to do so, I used float:left;. It's css is: .topmenu { list-style:none; margin:0; padding:0; } .topmenu li { float:left; } This brings the menu in a perfect horizontal line, but the entire list is floated to the left. I want to bring the .topmenu to appear in the center of the document and keep the listitem inside it floated towards the left. I found that this is achievable by defining width property of the .topmenu, but I dont want to fix its width as the list-items are dynamically generated and thus could increase and decrease. Any one know of any solution?

  In C, I know I can dynamically allocate a two-dimensional array on the heap using the following code: int** someNumbers = malloc(arrayRows*sizeof(int*)); for (i = 0; i < arrayRows; i++) { someNumbers[i] = malloc(arrayColumns*sizeof(int)); } Clearly, this actually creates a one-dimensional array of pointers to a bunch of separate one-dimensional arrays of integers, and "The System" can figure you what I mean when I ask for: someNumbers[4][2]; But when I statically declare a 2D array, as in the following line...: int someNumbers[ARRAY_ROWS][ARRAY_COLUMNS]; ...does a similar structure get created on the stack, or is it of another form completely? (i.e. is it a 1D array of pointers? If not, what is it, and how do references to it get figured out?) Also, when I said, "The System," what is actually responsible for figuring that out? The kernel? Or does the C compiler sort it out while compiling?

What in the world do you want to use this for? – deceze @deceze: very true, However, How else would you store the contents of these CSV files. They must be stored in mysql for indexing. The only solid fact about them is that they all have a mobile column with a standard format. The CSV can have an arbitrary amount of columns with an arbitrary amount of rows. They can (with no exaggeration) range from a single row, 35 column csv to an 80k row single column CSV. I am open to other ideas. – Hailwood There are many solutions for this, from attribute-value schemas to JSON storage and NoSQL storage. Open a new question about it. • Customizing the Stars Image for Ajaxful_Rating RoR plugin

  I'm trying to come up with my own star image that's slightly smaller and different style than the one provided in the gem/plugin, but Ajaxful_rating doesn't have an easy way to do this. Here's what I've figured out so far: The stars.png in the public folder is three 25x25 pixel tiles stacked vertically, ordered empty star, normal star, and hover star. I'm assuming as long as you keep the above constraints, you should be fine without modifying any other files. But what if you want to change the image size of the stars to larger or smaller? I've found where you can change the height in the stylesheets/ajaxful_rating.css .ajaxful-rating{ position: relative; /*width: 125px; this is setted dynamically */ height: 25px; overflow: hidden; list-style: none; margin: 0; padding: 0; background-position: left top; } .ajaxful-rating li{ display: inline; } .ajaxful-rating a, .ajaxful-rating span, .ajaxful-rating .show-value{ position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; text-indent: -1000em; height: 25px; line-height: 25px; outline: none; overflow: hidden; border: none; } You just need to change every place that says "25px" above to whatever height your new star image is. This works fine but doesn't display the horizontal part correctly. Anyone know where I would look to set the horizontal part as well? (I'm assuming it's in an .rb file somewhere based upon how many stars you specified in your ajaxful_rating setup)

Easy enough to do manually, but it is likely to get disconnected from the Widget model classes. I would prefer not to output Javascript directly in my view, though I have considered using content_for(:js) and have a yield :js in my template footer. Any better ideas?

  I had good luck with cached offline apps until I tried including data from JSONP endpoints. The app works fine--meaning both alerts show--the first time I run it, but subsequent runs, even with the attempt at cache-busting in line 10, seem to be attempting to load the script from cache no matter what the query string is. I see the alert showing the script source, but the callback never fires. If I remove the manifest link from line 2 and reset my browser--being Safari and the iPhone Simulator--to clear cache, it works every time. I've also tried alerting the number of SCRIPT tags in the page, and it's definitely seeing both the existing and dynamically-created tag in all cases.

• Multiple grids in one area

  I'm currently creating a WPF application, using C# and XAML in Visual Studios 2010. I have a master grid. In that master grid I have a group bar which you can select different items. Depending on what you select, the middle of the master grid can be totally different. What I was wondering is, what's the best way to program the middle part? Right now, I have it set up in such a way that everything in the middle is dynamically programed in C#, and everything on the outside is programmed in XAML. In C# I programmed: for each group bar item, there is a grid that goes with it (so that different content can be displayed on it). Each grid is a child of the master grid. Each grid is visible or hidden when necessary. Is this the best way to approach this? The best example of this is in Outlook 2007, where you have your group bar on the right hand side. When you select different items on the group bar (mail, calendar, tasks) the right of the group bar completely changes.

• Dynamic evaluation of a table column within an insert before trigger

  HI All, I have 3 tables, main, types and linked. main has an id column and 32 type columns. types has id, type linked has id, main_id, type_id I want to create an insert before trigger on the main table. It needs to compare its 32 type columns to the values in the types table if the main table column has an 'X' for its value and insert the main_id and types_id into the linked table. i have done a lot of searching, and it looks like a prepared statement would be the way to go, but i wanted to ask the experts. The issue, is i dont want to write 32 IF statements, and even if i did, i need to query the types table to get the ID for that type, seems like a huge waist of resources. Ideally i want to do this inside of my trigger: BEGIN DECLARE @types results_set -- (not sure if this is a valid type); -- (iam sure my loop syntax is all wrong here)... SET @types = (select * from types) for i=0;i<types.records;i++ { IF NEW.[i.type] = 'X' THEN insert into linked (main_id,type_id) values (new.ID, i.id); END IF; } END; Anyway, This is what i was hoping to do, maybe there is a way to dynamically set the field name inside of a results loop, but i cant find a good example of this.   So we have some server with some address port and ip. we are developing that server so we can implement on it what ever we need for help. What are standard/best practices for data transfer speed management between C++ windows client app and server (C++)? My main point is in how to get how much data can be uploaded/downloaded from/to client via his low speed network to my relatively super fast server. (I need it for set up of his live stream Audio/Video bit rate) My try on explaining number 3. We do not care how fast is our server. It is always faster than needed. We care about client tyring to stream out to our server his media. he streams encoded (via ffmpeg) live video data to our server. But he has say ADSL with 500kb/s of outgoing traffic. Also he uses some ICQ or what so ever so he has less than 500 kb/s per second. And he wants to stream live video! So we need to set up our ffmpeg to encode video with respect to the bit rate user can provide. We develop server side and client side. We need a way of finding out how much user can upload per second currently (so value can change dynamically over time)

• Trying to make a plugin system in C++

  I'm making a task-based program that needs to have plugins. Tasks need to have properties which can be easily edited, I think this can be done with Qt's Meta-Object Compiler reflection capabilities (I could be wrong, but I should be able to stick this in a QtPropertyBrowser?) For instance, "FileTasks.dll" could have tasks for deleting files, making files, etc. The only problem with Qt's plugin setup is I want to store X amount of Tasks in one .dll module. As far as I can tell, you can only load one interface per plugin (I could be wrong?). If so, the only possible way to do accomplish what I want is to create a FactoryInterface with string based keys which return the objects (as in Qt's Plug-And-Paint example), which is a terrible boilerplate that I would like to avoid. Anyone know a cleaner C++ plugin architecture than Qt's to do what I want? Also, am I safely assuming Qt's reflection capabilities will do what I want (i.e. able to edit an unknown dynamically loaded tasks' properties with the QtPropertyBrowser before dispatching)?

• Advise guidance on how to form this jQuery script for show/hide fade element

  Hey guys.. I basically have several links on the left side of the screen and on the right is a preview window. Below the preview window is another box for the affiliate link code. So what I am trying to do is create an affiliate page where you choose the banner size on the left by clicking on the link and on the right you see it dynamically change to the banner size and the code changes accordingly as well. So far I have the following code and it works but it seems very very cumbersome and bloated.
