• "Missing Operating System" after installing Ubuntu 12.04 from a CD on a Macbook Pro

  I followed this guide to install Ubuntu 12.04 on my Macbook Pro 8,2 (late 2011): https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MactelSupportTeam/AppleIntelInstallation I used a CD. I synced the partition table on rEFIt, and it went fine. I do have an icon to boot on Linux, but when I launch it, after a few seconds I have "Missing Operating System" displayed, and that's all... How can I fix that? The only thing I see is, in the guide, it is mentioned this: On the last dialog of the installer, be sure to click the “Advanced” button and choose to install the boot loader (grub) to your root Ubuntu partition, for example /dev/sda3. This will be the only partition with the EXT4 file system. In Ubuntu 12.04 installation process, there is not such an option, but there is a dropdown menu to select where the grub bootloader should be installed. It was /dev/sda by default, but I selected my root Ubuntu partition (in my case, /dev/sda5). I got a warning message (but actually, it was the same warning message even when I selected /dev/sda), and I continued the installation... Thanks in advance for your help!

• The battery indicator in Unity panel not showing up

  I installed Ubuntu 12.04 with Wubi. Well after being completely dazzled with the amount of free content in the Software Centre, I decided to go deeper and start messing with settings. Well after changing the screen brightness the highest level I noticed that there wasn't an indicator for how much battery was left in my laptop. I looked up online on got 2 suggestions on how to fix: Right click on the Unity panel and add an indicator Set it to show in the power settings menu. Well I did both when I right click at the top menu nothing comes up and setting it to show does nothing either. Then I tried installing something in the Software Centre. I got something but when I activated it it said I had 0% power left even though I was charging and at %100 according the Light in the front of my laptop. So now I'm thinking that it doesn't even recognise my computer as a laptop which is weird because in the display settings it says my screen size is set to laptop. How can I install it? I don't know what version it is other then Ubuntu 12.04 and no matter what the icon does not appear with the

• Fastest way to parse big json android

  I've a doubt that doesn't let me sleep! :D I'm currently working with big json files, with many levels. I parse these object using the 'default' android way, so I read the response with a ByteArrayOutputStream, get a string and create a JSONObject from the string. All fine here. • Is there an idiot's guide to software licensing somewhere?

  Basically, my knowledge on the issue is zilch other than the fact that open-source and closed-source exists. I'm a web developer (not a designer in the slightest), so I look online for things like icons. I've always been a big fan of these icons, which have a Creative Commons Attribution 2.5 License. As far as I can see, this license says 'do whatever you want with them as long as you have a link back to me somewhere'. Is that assumption correct? Just today I found a new icon set, with a much more confusing license (found here), and to be quite honest I have no idea if I'm allowed to use them or not. At the moment I want to just use them for toy stuff that might never see the light of day, but then my source code is stored on Github, is it legal to store the icons there where they're publicly accessible? If I put them on my personal website that might have ads on it to make me five cents every now and then, is that legal? If I use them on a site that offers a free service to users, is that legal? If that site then starts making money (via things like paid subscriptions) or gets bought out by someone (highly unlikely but one day possible) is that legal? Is there some noob guide out there that explains all this stuff, because I would hate to start using this sort of stuff now only to have to change it all later. Even if I buy the icons, there's still licensing issues that I don't understand! :( And this sort of stuff keeps popping up more and more often...

• Plugged in, not charging&ndash;Windows 7

  Just a quick post on something I ran into lately with my Dell Precision M4500 laptop (monster laptop!).  I noticed the little icon in the system tray for the power options was stating that it was “plugged in, not charging”.  I don’t know why it was stating this, but I quickly found a fix for it on the net. I found the fix in this forum on CNET.  Here’s the fix: In order to correct problems with the battery's power management software, follow the steps below. 1. Click Start and type device in the search field, then select Device Manager . 2. Expand the Batteries category. 3. Under the Batteries category, right-click the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery listing, and select Uninstall . WARNING: Do not remove the Microsoft AC Adapter driver or any other ACPI compliant driver. 4. On the Device Manager taskbar, click Scan for hardware changes . Alternately, select Action > Scan for hardware changes . Windows will scan your computer for hardware that doesn't have drivers installed, and will install the drivers needed to manage your battery's power. The notebook should now indicate that the battery is charging.   And it did work.

• Strange resolution on Ubuntu 11.10

  I only just installed Ubuntu 11.10, so excuse me if this question is silly ;-) I have a Fujitsu Esprimo Mobile V655, nvidia 8200 graphics, and recently installed Ubuntu 11.10 using wubi. I had to modify booting commands to include nomodeset; otherwise Ubuntu would not boot. Now I did set my screen resolution to 1280 x 720, which is the correct resolution for this screen. Still, the display seems imperfect. The font sizes seem unnatural(too large / stretched) and text is quite blurry (especially in Firefox). Could it have something to do withe the nvidia graphics driver and/or the nomodeset parameter? How can I fix this? Update: I used jockey-gtk to update nvidia to the current version. This improved the resolution dramatically (no blurriness, fonts are good). It also means that I no loger need to include nomodesetin the boot commands. However, other problems were brought up by this. It seems that certain files cannot be accessed - icon (images) are missing, some task bars are completely unstyled (grey, block-form, win97 style). I also get this error message(roughly translated from German, so may be slightly different from actual) every time I reboot: Could not apply the stored configuration for the monitor: none of the chosen modi is compatible with the available modi. I have tried nvidia-xconfig, unity --reset , no improvements. Can anyone help, please?

• Acer Aspire One 725 - missing graphic card driver for Radeon HD 6290?

  Recently I bought an Acer Aspire One 725 Netbook and installed Ubuntu 12.10 on it. I bought it, because it can run HD movies and has Full HD on external VGA port. However, movies from youtube have a really slow framerate. If you open three tabs in Opera (for example g-mail, youtube and askubuntu) it gets really laggy. My suspicion is that the driver for graphic card is missing. When I check the System->Details->Graphics the driver is unknown. After running lspci | grep VGA I get this output: 00:01.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Device 980a From what I see, I have a AMD C70 processor integrated with (or something similar) AMD Radeon HD 6290. Has anyone had the same problem? Do you know which drivers need to be installed for the graphics to work properly? On official Acer page there are only drivers for Win7 and Win8... • Can't change folder background

  I tried to change via dragging from the Backgrounds and Emblems window, but the icon just goes back to that window rather than changing the folder background.However, I can change the task bar by this drag-n-drop. Probably it is something about changing ownership permission? if so how to change that? • How do I restore default menu/top panel text color in Gnome Classic?

  The default text/icon color in my top panel has changed from white to a very dark grey, making my menus virtually unreadable against the black of the Ambiance theme. This includes even the login screen menu. I used Gnome Tweak to change the theme to Adwaita, but while some text has gone light grey (e.g. Date/Time), the login menu text remains dark grey, as do most icons (e.g. dropbox, wireless, battery indicator...) in the top panel after I log in. I tried deleting the top panel altogether but the option of deleting under Super + Alt + Right Click is blocked off. I tried running a panel from the terminal, but it came up in strange colors too, plus icons had moved around and some parts of the panel were opaque and other parts transparent. Deleting the panel wouldn't solve the basic problem anyway, as my login menu would still be very dark grey and unreadable against the default (black) Ambiance background. I would like to keep Ambiance but I want to reset the color to default (white) again. Can anyone help me?

• Webmatrix The Site has Stopped Fix

  I just got started with AzureWebSites by creating a website by choosing the Wordpress template. Next I tried to install WebMatrix so that I could run the website locally. Every time I tried to run my website from WebMatrix I hit the message “The following site has stopped ‘xxx’” Step 00 – Analysis It took a bit of time to figure out that WebMatrix makes use of IISExpress. But it was easy to figure out that IISExpress was not showing up in the system tray when I started WebMatrix. This was a good indication that IISExpress is having some trouble starting up. So, I opened CMD prompt and tried to run IISExpress.exe this resulted in the below error message So, I ran IISExpress.exe /trace:Error this gave more detailed reason for failure Step 1 – Fixing “The following site has stopped ‘xxx’” Further analysis revealed that the IIS Express config file had been corrupted. So, I navigated to C:\Users\<UserName>\Documents\IISExpress\config and deleted the files applicationhost.config, aspnet.config and redirection.config (please take a backup of these files before deleting them). Come back to CMD and run IISExpress /trace:Error IIS Express successfully started and parked itself in the system tray icon. I opened up WebMatrix and clicked Run, this time the default site successfully loaded up in the browser without any failures. Step 2 – Download WordPress Azure WebSite using WebMatrix Because the config files ‘applicationhost.config’, ‘aspnet.config’ and ‘redirection.config’ were deleted I lost the settings of my Azure based WordPress site that I had downloaded to run from WebMatrix. This was simple to sort out… Open up WebMatrix and go to the Remote tab, click on Download Export the PublishSettings file from Azure Management Portal and upload it on the pop up you get when you had clicked Download in the previous step Now you should have your Azure WordPress website all set up & running from WebMatrix. • alsa - sound issues on ubuntu 12.04

  i am having an sony E series laptop.i have an HDMI port .at this stage ,i have tested my sound card , which provides audio out on my laptop i.e i could hear songs .my laptop has two sound cards amd 5450 and an intel-hda(alsamixer shows that as s/pdif) . i decided to connect HDMI output to my new HD-TV.but, i could get only visuals on my TV,NO AUDIO OUTPUT ( HDMI cable works fine with win 7).my laptop has two sound cards.but i couldn't switch output to other card.( i don't know ,how to do that) i decided to update alsa. complied the following code in terminal. sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-audio-dev/alsa-daily sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install alsa-hda-dkms then,strangely no login sound, and no audio output on my laptop at all .then, started complied code from step1 sound troubleshooting procedure from offical ubuntu site.then, my speaker icon taskbar disappeared .obivously $aplay -l ,provided output as no soundcards detected . so , i implemented step 4 from that guide, it provides a output of all hardware devices in my laptop. *-multimedia UNCLAIMED description: Audio device product: Cedar HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 5400/6300 Series] vendor: Hynix Semiconductor (Hyundai Electronics) physical id: 0.1 bus info: pci@0000:01:00.1 version: 00 width: 64 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: pm pciexpress msi bus_master cap_list configuration: latency=0 resources: memory:f0040000-f0043fff *-multimedia UNCLAIMED description: Audio device product: 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset High Definition Audio vendor: Intel Corporation physical id: 1b bus info: pci@0000:00:1b.0 version: 05 width: 64 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: pm msi pciexpress bus_master cap_list configuration: latency=0 resources: memory:f5e00000-f5e03fff that command displayed output name of the two cards . but , still i have no positive output on $aplay -l. so therfore, i think alsa couldn't detect my sound cards . is there solution to this problem? it could be better,if alsa would channel output from multiple sound cards ? how should install and configure alsa such that detects HDMI cable as soon i connect to my HD tv? is it possible to alsa and pluseaudio 2.0 to co-exist, if so how?

• Printer Canon MP540 succesfully added finally but doesn't print? (Attached Debug log)

  i tried to setup my printer in Ubuntu 10.10. I had to use special guide to install because Canon used libcupsys2 in its packages and ubuntu expects libscupsys i followed this guide in reference to this advice. The first problem was this one (the ubuntu "add printer dialog asked for root credentials". The suggested workarout in Launchpad to create a root password worked. Now i added the printer. It's available for printing. Then i got an error message "cups insecure filter" which prevented me from printing. That could be solved by setting the need root rights in the /usr/lib/cups/filter/ directory. The error message disappeared after restarting cups service. Now it should work but it doesn't. The main problem is now, the printer seems to be proper setup but when i try to print a document, the printer icon appears for short time in gnomepanel. There's a printing job in Queue which got completed, but the printer doesn't print. I attached the Debuglog provided by printer error control, had to upload to another site, since it was to big in the question body here. Perhaps someone can identify the problem with it? Note: i know that it once worked fine with an older release of Ubuntu, but not sure which version this was.

• Dual boot Win/7 and Ubuntu 12.04

  So I've always wanted Ubuntu along with windows 7 and finally I went to try and make my computer that last night. (( I'll just skip the long story. )) I loaded Ubuntu from CD, Version 12.04 and it loaded fine and then I clicked the install icon. It asked me witch option I would like to proceed with, and I answered Ubuntu, in Windows 7. So it did everything rather quickly, and restarted itself; upon restarting itself it ejected the CD, and I thought everything was good to go. It brought me to the Option to either load Ubuntu or Windows, I was thinking to myself wow that was alot easier than I thought; Windows 7 Loads fine after it checked the HDD but when I go to load Ubuntu it brings me to the loading screen and then stays there for a long period time, finally moves on as if it was going to load into the regular dashboard, but loads into a dos looking thing. (( I'm sorry if I sound retarded explaining everything I'm not great with computers )) And at the very time it says something like installation failed. It also says it could not find a file or something like that. If you need me to go back and get the full message and put it up here I will. But if I put the CD in it loads fine. Thanks in advance for everyone that helps me solve this problem.

• Another hibernation question

  I installed Ubuntu on my Windows 7 Sager laptop using Wubi. Hibernate (i.e. suspend to disc) is not an option from the power icon, only suspend, shutdown, etc. Hibernate is also not an option from my battery/lid close options. I understand that hibernation is disabled by default in Ubuntu 12.04. I tried running pm-hibernate but I get the following message: Looking for splash system... none s2disk: Snapshotting system and then the computer just hangs with a black screen. According to the documentation here if this fails then I can't enable hibernate but it offers no help in making pm-hibernate succeed. Could swap be my problem? It looks like I have very small swap: user@ubuntu:~$ cat /proc/swaps Filename Type Size Used Priority /host/ubuntu/disks/swap.disk file 262140 0 -1 The advice on SwapFaq is only for the author's set up (e.g. I don't have an Ubuntu install disk since I used Wubi) and he says that 'INFO: This will not work for 12.04, resume from hibernate work differently in 12.04.' Any advice? I really need to get hibernate working to use my laptop as a, er, laptop. Thanks

• Problems after installing a plethora of updates

  yesterday I decided to install 32-bit Ubuntu on my 64-bit desktop, first of all, is that a problem? After installing, i had around 270 updates to install, according to the update manager. I was having trouble launching a game with WINE, so I thought updating might help. After updating, I restarted my computer, and after a long while it showed me my desktop and the icon's on it, but I didn't get anything else. I didn't have the "taskbar" (not sure what it's called, sue me) on the left side, nor the bar at the top. I also received an error message saying some program had stopped working. I decided to restart my computer again, and that was when it told me that i have to re-configure my drivers, or run in "Low Graphics" mode for one session, amongst other options. Well, I decided to try to revert to the "basic video drivers", which was an option it gave. Restarting the computer gave me the same problem as in the second paragraph. After a few more restarts and a night of restless sleep, here I am trying to start my computer again, only to receive a black screen, and my monitor "going to sleep". I'm sort of stumped here, being new to Ubuntu (desktop, at least) and I really hope this gets fixed without me having to install Ubuntu on yet another partition (I have three other partitions for various things already) tl;dr: Black screen on boot after installing updates.

  Possible Duplicate: How to revert to GNOME Classic? I don't like unity so I tried Ubuntu Gnome Remix 12.10. But I feel disappointed too. - No right click on desktop. (I know there is a way to enable it). - No icon on desktop. - I want to have "applications", "palces", "systems" on top panel as before. It just takes much more steps to arrive where I want to go in default gnome 3 settings. - It seems to me that for some applications, when it is maximalized, there is no close buttons or "restore to previous size" button. In fact, it has no title bar in this case, so I can't drag the title bar to restore its previous size and move the window. So I got 3 questions here: (for those who like the way gnome work before) What difference between gnome2 and gnome3 that you prefer the way it works in gnome2? How do you change it to work in the gnome2 way? I don't like the appearance in gnome3. For those who have tried to make your gnome3 looks good, could you share how you customize your gnome3 appearance? (this is for chatting only, not a real question) Why all the main OS (Windows, Mac, Some Linux) want to integrate Desktop and Tablet with focus on Tablet? (Which means that when it is installed on a desktop, it still has tablet appearance, which makes things strange.) Do they think the personal desktop PC will become less and less?

  I'm having serious problems installing the Broadcom drivers for Ubuntu. It worked perfectly on my previous version, but now, it is impossible. I'm a user with no advance knowledge in Linux, so I would need clear explanations on make, compile, etc. Edit: For the command: "lspci | grep Network", I get the following message: 06:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN (rev 01) For the command: iwconfig, i get the following: lo no wireless extensions. eth0 no wireless extensions. When i follow the following steps (from the above link), there are a NO error message at all: open the 'Synaptic Package Manager' and search for bcm uninstall the bcm-kernel-source package make sure that the firmware-b43-installer and the b43-fwcutter packages are installed type into terminal: cat /etc/modprobe.d/* | egrep '8180|acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|rt6|rt7|witch|wl' (you may want to copy this) and see if the term blacklist bcm43xx is there if it is, type cd /etc/modprobe.d/ and then sudo gedit blacklist.conf put a # in front of the line: blacklist bcm43xx then save the file (I was getting error messages in the terminal about not being able to save, but it actually did save properly). reboot 'End of procedure' Before (not ubuntu 11.04), if i wanted to connect wireles, i just went to the icon at the upper side of the screen, click, showed ALL the wireless network available, and done. • Is there any way to facilitate switching windows in Ubuntu?

  I'm just a student who received my laptop from my uncle, who's a coder, so I'm still getting used to working with ubuntu. I recently upgraded ubuntu from an earlier version, and everything seems to be pretty great. The only thing is that when I open a program, or file, or whatever, it takes up the whole screen. I can only close it by going to the far top left of my screen, or by ctrl+W. Anyways, I find it really hard to switch between programs. For example I really like to have my windows that are open to be accessible by clicking on their icon at the bottom of the screen... Great when writing or researching. Anyways, I really just want to find an easier way to switch windows. Also, I used to love the way I could cube-rotate my screen, and just drag files from one desktop to another, with compiz. Now, its sort of like flipping a coin when I switch windows, is there any way to get my desktop cube back? And yes, I have enabled all the old settings I used to use with compiz. Sorry if what I'm asking is very basic, I know how to use a computer, I'm just not really familiar with the interface! Any help is greatly appreciated.

• How to properly uninstall/reinstall Ubuntu One on Windows XP?

  I had previously installed an Ubuntu One client as a test on a Windows XP machine. Now I wanted to change the account for the client to a production one but had problems changing the email address so decided to do a reinstall. Ran uninstall. Downloaded ubuntuone-3.0.2-windows-installer.exe. It downloads, goes through the unpacking/install – strangely some of the messages say updating as if it was replacing something that was already there. I do not get the setup/signin screen. There is no ubuntu% processes running. The Program files/ubuntuone directory exists with data and dist folders. The U icon is on the desktop – pointing at ubuntuone/dist/ubuntuone-control-panel-qt.exe but this does not run. Ran uninstall again, deleted Program files/ubuntuone directory, removed any ubuntu entries for registry, rebooted. Downloaded install again - exactly the same as above. How can I uninstall Ubuntu One to get a clean reinstall? Or force the install to continue after downloading/unpacking?
