• Can a variable bu used 2nd time after releasing it?

  Hello, I try to understand the memory management in ObjectiveC and still some things are a misery for me. I've got an instance variable: NSMutableArray *postResultsArray; when a button is clicked in the UI I create new array: self.postResultsArray = [NSMutableArray array]; then I add some objects to the array and when the whole operation is done I would like to release the array: [self.postResultsArray release]; (I assume that all the objects stoed in the array will be released along with the array). The problem appears when I click the button again and in the code I want to create the array again with: self.postResultsArray = [NSMutableArray array]; I get: [CFArray release]: message sent to deallocated instance 0x3d9e390 Can't I initialize the same instance variable for the second time? or maybe I should not release it? and if so, why? • Telling someone to "let the world judge their development practices" without being condicending?

  There's a person in management on my team, that: Doesn't ask questions on Stack Overflow. Doesn't read development blogs. Doesn't use development best practices. This person is about to make some major decisions about the technology stack that will be used throughout the company. (I asked him what the technology stack was they were planning to use was, and it included many things that are not even development tools). How can I tell them to "Let the world's experience" judge their development practices, before they set them in stone; without being condescending or upsetting them?

• How to deal with 'bad' decision forced on you regarding basic software for your product

  Here is my situation, our product used to support several of the major databases. Now management has decided to move all products to MaxDB (aka SapDB previously), and even if we keep supporting some of the previous dbs, all new installations are on MaxDB. I am sure MaxDB is a great db and can support huge SAP installations. But from the point of view of a software developper, its a nightmare. Every time you need to do something not trivial (write an stored procedure, some fancy trigger...) and you google for some info, you get like 0.1% of the hits you would with things like MySql, PostgreSql or MSSql. Mailing lists are nearly non existant. SAP does support it commercially but it is not clear wether we'll buy support. And the decision cannot be rolled back. The product works with MaxDB, but with lots of inefficiency on development and a lot of frustration, is there something one could do?

• NSAutoreleasePool carrying across methods?

  I'm building an iPhone application where I detach some threads to do long-running work in the background so as not to hang the UI. I understand that threads need NSAutoreleasePool instances for memory management. What I'm not sure about is if the threaded method calls another method - does that method also need an NSAutoreleasePool? Example code: - (void)primaryMethod { [self performSelectorInBackground:@selector(threadedMethod) withObject:nil]; } - (void)threadedMethod { NSAutoreleasePool *aPool = [[NSAutoreleasePool alloc] init]; // Some code here [self anotherMethod]; // Maybe more code here [aPool drain]; } - (void)anotherMethod { // More code here } The reason I ask is I'm receiving errors that objects are being autoreleased with no pool in place, and are "just leaking." I've seen other questions where people didn't have autorelease pools in place at all, and I understand why an autorelease pool is needed. I'm specifically interested in finding out whether an autorelease pool created in (in this example) threadedMethod applies to objects created in anotherMethod.

• How can I save the schema of a SQL Database to a file?

  I'm writing a software application in C#.Net that connects to a SQL Server database. My C# project is under SVN version control, but I'd like to include my database schema in the SVN repository as well. An answer to a previous question of mine suggested storing the scripts to generate the database in version control. Is there a way to automatically generate these scripts from an existing database? I'm very new to SQL Server, but I noticed in management studio that the SQL commands to create a table can be generated automatically by right clicking on the table and clicking "Script Table As". Is there an equivalent command that would work with the entire database?

• C# programmer - necessary to learn C or C++?

  Hey, I have been programming now for a couple of years. But never any low level language. I started off with some java and some VB. Then I went over to VB.NET and now for a while I have been writing C#. As you see, I have never written any low level language where I had to deal with memory management. Is this something I should do, like a route of passage that every programmer should go through? I am a bit keen on trying to perhaps writing in assembler directly. This would suit me personally good as I have 2 parents that have been writing assembler for ages. Is it necessary for a professional programmer these days to know how to manually manage memory?

• Month to Date in SQL Server 2008

  Hopefully this will be an easy one to answer. I am working on a table that requires MTD data. One of our SQL guys told me to use MONTH (@monthtodate)= 11 Where @monthtodate is set to GetDate() in the parameter list in SQL Server Management Studio. So in "theory", he says, it should select the month (11) and then get today and return all the requested data in between those two dates. But I'm thinking this isn't correct. In looking at my data I'm starting to think that It's just returning data for the whole month of November instead of just MTD. I guess, technically, anything that has 0 won't be calculated. However that just means it's poorly written code correct? In your opinions, would this be the better way to return MTD data: production_date <= @today and Production_Date >= DATEADD(mm, DATEDIFF(mm, 0, @today), 0) Thanks in advance everyone!

  Where I work, my role has been evolving from a pure development role to team leadership. I find that this suits me, and I'm generally enjoying it. One aspect of the job that continually vexes me, though, is time management. My day used to be pure coding. Now, I still have a largely full plate of coding duties, but I'm expected to mentor other developers, work on requirements, make design decisions for other developers, evaluate bug reports from users, assign them to developers, and so on. I find that my day has become on interruption after another and the prolonged periods of sustained concentration needed to get any actual quality coding done are becoming rarer and rarer. Today, I finally grabbed my laptop and escaped to a coffee shop so I could get some actual work done. How do the team leads here manage their day -- or manage their workplace -- so they don't let their administrative tasks overwhelm them?

  Hi all, Im new to Redmine. I installed redmine(with mysql) on Ubuntu 10.04. The following were the installation steps i did: $ sudo apt-get install redmine redmine-mysql subversion $ ln -s /usr/share/redmine/public /var/www/redmine In /etc/apache2/mods-available/passenger.conf, added a PassengerDefaultUser www-data directive. Configured the /var/www/redmine location in /etc/apache2/sites-available/default: RailsBaseURI /redmine PassengerResolveSymlinksInDocumentRoot on $ sudo a2enmod passenger I then restarted the apache2 server. Thats it. Now i typed http://localhost/redmine/ in my browser and accessed my redmine instance. So from here on, how do i create different users with with different privileges, create different projects, also update the issues and other project management related stuff..... I know this sounds silly, but i couldnt find anythin to proceed....

  I’ve just started developing for iPhone and am trying to get my head around memory management. I made a small program that shows a map and an annotation on the map. For the annotation I made a simple class that implements the MKAnnotation protocol. To create and add the annotation I wrote this: [self.myMapView addAnnotation:[[MyAnnotation alloc] init]]; It worked fine until I tried to release the object. Nothing to release. This is what I would have done in C#, I guess it doesn’t work without garbage collection? So is this the only way to do it? • Reallocating memory via "new" in C++

  Quick question regarding memory management in C++ If I do the following operation: pointer = new char [strlen(someinput_input)+1]; And then perform it again, with perhaps a different result being returned from strlen(someinput_input). Does this result in memory being left allocated from the previous "new" statement? IE, is each new statement receiving another block of HEAP memory from the OS, or is it simply reallocating? Assuming I do a final delete pointer[]; will that deallocate any and all memory that I ever allocated via new to that pointer? Thanks

• How do I release an object allocated in a different AutoReleasePool ?

  Hi, I have a problem with the memory management in Objective-C. Say I have a method that allocates an object and stores the reference to this object as a member of the class. If I run through the same function a second time, I need to release this first object before creating a new one to replace it. Supposing that the first line of the function is: NSAutoreleasePool *pool = [[NSAutoreleasePool alloc] init]; This means that a different auto-release pool will be in place. The code to allocate the object is as follows: if (m_object != nil) [m_object release]; m_object = [[MyClass alloc] init]; [m_object retain]; The problem is that the program crashes when running the last line of the method: [pool release]; What am I doing wrong ?   Hey guys, i want to create a small document management system. there are several users who store their files. each file which is uploaded contains an info which user uploaded it and the document content itself. In a view there are displayed all files of ONE specific user, ordered by date. What would be better: 1) giving the documents a name or metadata(XML) which contain the date and user (and iterate through them to get the metadata) or 2) giving the files a random/unique name and store metadata in a DB? something like this: date | user | filename What would you say and why? The used programming language is java and the DB is MySQL.

• One account, multiple users, multiple shopping cart in a web application

  I received a somewhat unusual request (imo) for a transactional web site. I have to implement the possibility of having multiple shopping cart for the same user. Those really are shopping carts, not order templates. I.E: A store with several departments ordering under the same account, but with a different person placing orders for a specific department only. Having more than one user per account is not an option since it would involve 'too much' management from the stores owner and the admins. Anyone had to deal with this before? The option so far is to have names for shopping cart, and a dropdown list or something alike after login to choose the cart with some kind of 'busy flag' to lock the cart if it's in use in another session.

The "CMTGetTelemetryMsg(int)" method returns a pointer. Do I have to "delete telm;" at the end of each iteration?

• Under Windows CE, how can I check which RAM based DLLs are loaded in virtual memory space?

  I have a problem with loading a DLL under Windows Mobile 5.0. I'm pretty confident that this is caused by running out of the application virtual memory (the 32 MB slot of the process, as explained in Windows CE .NET Advanced Memory Management). I'm looking for a way to actually make sure that this is the issue and investigate whether my efforts bring expected results. Do you know of a way to check the contents of the virtual memory application slot? Any applications that can help me with this task?

[data release]; } return img; } However, when I use this, the image data is NEVER freed. There is definitely a memory bug with this, although I didn't break any memory management rule I am aware of. My guess is that because this is a class method which gets called from instance methods, There is no active autorelease pool in place or it's one that only gets drained when I quit the app. Could that be right?

• Android Static Variable Scope and Lifetime

  I have an application that has a Service uses a ArrayList to store in the background for a very long time, the variable is initialized when the service started. The service is in the background and there will be frequent access to the variable (that's why i don't want to use file management or settings since it will be very expensive for a file I/O for the sake of battery life). The variable will likely to be ~1MB-2MB over its life tie. Is it safe to say that it will never be nulled by GC or the system or is there any way to prevent it? Thanks.

Is there a way using sql 2008 Management Studio to look at the queries that hit the server? I'm trying to debug a program and I get messages like "Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'AND'".   Most of my blog entries are not about Oracle products, and most of the latest entries are about topics such as IT strategy and enterprise architecture. However, given my background at Gartner, and at Hyperion, I still keep a close eye on what's happening in BI and EPM. One important reason is that I believe there is significant competitive value for organizations getting BI and EPM right. Davenport and Harris wrote a great book called "Competing on Analytics", in which they explain this in a very engaging and convincing way. At Oracle we have defined the concept of "management excellence" that outlines what organizations have to do to keep or create a competitive edge. It's not only in the business processes, but also in the management processes. Recently, Gartner published its 2009 market shares report for BI, Analytics, and Performance Management. Gartner identifies the same three segments that Oracle does: (1) CPM Suites (Oracle refers not to Corporate Performance Management, but Enterprise Performance Management), (2) BI Platform, and (3) Analytic Applications & Performance Management. According to Gartner, Oracle's share is increasing with revenue growing by more than 5%. Oracle currently holds the #2 market share position in the overall BI Software space based on total BI software revenue. In fact, integration actually is the innovation. BI and EPM have been silo technology platforms and application suites way too long. Management and measuring performance should be very closely linked to strategy execution, which is the domain of other business application areas such as CRM, ERP, and Supply Chain. BI and EPM are not about "making better decisions" anymore, but are part of a tangible action framework. Furthermore, organizations are getting more serious about ecosystem thinking. They do not evaluate single tools anymore for different application areas, but buy into a complete ecosystem of hardware, software and services. The best ecosystem is the one that offers the most options, in environments where the uncertainty is high and investments are hard to reverse. The key to successfully managing such an environment is middleware, and BI and EPM become increasingly middleware intensive. In fact, given the horizontal nature of BI and EPM, sitting on top of all business functions and applications, you could call them "upperware". Many are active in the BI and EPM space. Big players can offer a lot, but there are always many areas that are covered by specialty vendors. Oracle openly embraces those technologies within the ecosystem as well. • Dell Management Packs in System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2?

  Hey all, I recently set up SCOM in a small business network environment. The root management server is a Dell Poweredge 2950, and I'd like to use SCOM to monitor it using Dell's management packs. I've imported the management packs into the SCOM deployment and followed Dell's installation instructions, but it doesn't seem to be fully working yet. Currently, the Diagram views in the Dell tree (Monitoring tab) seem to show me the server's place in the network topology, so it seems that at least part of it is working. However, none of the reports under "Performance and Power Monitoring Views" provide any information. When clicking on one of them (Power Consumption (Watts), for instance), the display area is blank and there is a tooltip visible that reads "No performance counter is selected. To select a counter, place a check mark in the Show column in legend below." However, in the legend, there's nothing there for me to check. I've installed OpenManage 6.2 on the server as per the Dell documentation, but I don't know what else I could have done that I missed. Does this sound like a familiar problem to anyone?
