• How To Restore Firefox Options To Default Without Uninstalling

  Firefox plugins are awesome and they are the pillars for the huge success of Firefox browser. Plugins vary from simple ones like changing color scheme of the browser to powerful ones likes changing the behavior of the browser itself. Recently I installed one of the powerful Firefox plugins and played around to tweak the behavior of the browser. At the end of my half an hour play, Firefox has completely become useless and stopped rending web pages properly. To continue using Firefox I had to restore it to default settings. But I don’t like to uninstall and then install it again as it’s a time consuming process and also I’ll loose all the plugins I’m using. How did I restore the default settings in a single click? Default Settings Restore Through Safe Mode Options It’s very easy to restore default settings of Firefox with the safe mode options. All we need to do is 1.  Close all the Firefox browser windows that are open 2. Launch Firefox in safe mode 3. Choose the option Reset all user preferences to Firefox defaults 4. Click on Make Changes and Restart button. Note: When Firefox restore the default settings, it erases all the stored passwords, browser history and other settings you have done. That’s all. • Twitter gem - undefined method `stringify_keys’

  Have you been getting the following errors when running the Twitter gem lately ? /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/httparty-0.4.3/lib/httparty/response.rb:15:in `send': undefined method `stringify_keys' for # (NoMethodError) from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/httparty-0.4.3/lib/httparty/response.rb:15:in `method_missing’ from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/mash-0.0.3/lib/mash.rb:131:in `deep_update’ from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/mash-0.0.3/lib/mash.rb:50:in `initialize’ from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/twitter-0.6.13/lib/twitter/search.rb:101:in `new’ from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/twitter-0.6.13/lib/twitter/search.rb:101:in `fetch’ from test.rb:26 It’s because Twitter has been sending back plain text errors that are treated as a string instead of json and can’t be properly ‘Mashed’ by the Twitter gem. Also check http://github.com/jnunemaker/twitter/issues#issue/6. Without diving into the bowels of the Twitter gem or HTTParty, you could ‘begin…rescue’ this error and try again in 5 minutes. I fixed it by overriding the offending code to return nil and checking for a nil response as follows: module Twitter class Search def fetch(force=false) if @fetch.nil? || force query = @query.dup query[:q] = query[:q].join(' ') query[:format] = 'json' #This line is the hack and whole reason we're monkey-patching at all. response = self.class.get('http://search.twitter.com/search', :query => query, :format => :json) #Our patch: response should be a Hash. • Sputnik – Google’s Java script conformance tester now as website

  Sputnik the JavaScript 3 conformance test suite launched by Google last year is now available as Google Labs (Sputnik Test)product. You can browse it like any other  website and run over 5000 java script function tests to check your browser compatibility This product allows you do the following options Run :  You can run the complete test suite on your browser to check the compliance to  ECMA-262 standards.You can also browse trough  the failed test case. Compare : You can compare java script conformance of the various leading browsers in the market. Now web developers can be more cautious while designing websites to make them compatible with multiple browsers. Google is committed to review and release multiple version periodically with updated test cases. According to the latest sputnik test  result released by Google, Opera 10.5 leads the race with only 78 failures. Microsoft IE 8 performed the worst (463 failures) . • SQL SERVER – Index Created on View not Used Often – Limitation of the View 12

  I have previously written on the subject SQL SERVER – The Limitations of the Views – Eleven and more…. This was indeed a very popular series and I had received lots of feedback on that topic. Today we are going to discuss something very interesting as well. During my recent performance tuning seminar in Hyderabad, I presented on the subject of Views. During the seminar, one of the attendees asked a question: We create a table and create a View on the top of it. On the same view, if we create Index, when querying View, will that index be used? The answer is NOT Always! (There is only one specific condition when it will be used. We will write about that later in the next post). Let us see the test case for the same. Thanks to Spirit application that makes jailbreaking of an iPad as simple as a kids play. In this post we will guide you the steps required for giving freedom to your iPad on your Windows PC or Mac. 1. Backup Your iPad SHSH – Backup SHSH of your iPad. This is required for restoring your iPad if something goes wrong while jailbreaking. Here is a nice article on how to perform the backup on Windows as well as on Mac OSX. 2. Install iTunes – Most likely that you have the latest version of iTunes. If not, install it from here 3. Activate Your iPad – If you iPad is already then you are all set to start the jail breaking. If not activate your iPad. 4.  Download Jailbreaking tool Spirit – The Spirit tool that can jailbreak the latest version of iPads and iPhones is available for Mac OSX and Windows XP/Vista/7. You can download it from Spirit website 5. Connect your iPad to your computer 6. Launch Spirit Jailbreak and click on Jailbreak button. Wait till you see “Jailbreak Complete!” message on your screen. 7. Voila! Your iPad is jailbroken and Cydia should be there in the list of applications. • That’s a wrap! Almost, there’s still one last chance to attend a SQL in the City event in 2012

  The communities team are back from the SQL in the City multi-city US Tour and we are delighted to have met so many happy SQL Server professionals and Red Gate customers. We set out to run a series of back-to-back events in order to meet, talk to and delight as many SQL Server and Red Gate enthusiasts as possible in 5 different cities in 11 days. We did it! The attendees had a good time too and 99% of them would attend another SQL in the City event in 2013 – so it seems we left an impression. • SQL SERVER – Difference Between DATETIME and DATETIME2 – WITH GETDATE

  Earlier I wrote blog post SQL SERVER – Difference Between GETDATE and SYSDATETIME which inspired me to write SQL SERVER – Difference Between DATETIME and DATETIME2. Now earlier two blog post inspired me to write this blog post (and 4 emails and 3 reads from readers). I previously populated DATETIME and DATETIME2 field with SYSDATETIME, which gave me very different behavior as SYSDATETIME was rounded up/down for the DATETIME datatype. I just ran the same experiment but instead of populating SYSDATETIME in this script I will be using GETDATE function. DECLARE @Intveral INT SET @Intveral = 10000 CREATE TABLE #TimeTable (FirstDate DATETIME, LastDate DATETIME2) WHILE (@Intveral > 0) BEGIN INSERT #TimeTable (FirstDate, LastDate) VALUES (GETDATE(), GETDATE()) SET @Intveral = @Intveral - 1 END GO SELECT COUNT(DISTINCT FirstDate) D_FirstDate, COUNT(DISTINCT LastDate) D_LastDate FROM #TimeTable GO SELECT DISTINCT a.FirstDate, b.LastDate FROM #TimeTable a INNER JOIN #TimeTable b ON a.FirstDate = b.LastDate GO SELECT * FROM #TimeTable GO DROP TABLE #TimeTable GO Let us run above script and observe the results. You will find that the values of GETDATE which is populated in both the columns FirstDate and LastDate are very much same. This is because GETDATE is of datatype DATETIME and the precision of the GETDATE is smaller than DATETIME2 there is no rounding happening. In other word, this experiment is pointless. I have included this as I got 4 emails and 3 twitter questions on this subject. If your datatype of variable is smaller than column datatype there is no manipulation of data, if data type of variable is larger than column datatype the data is rounded. People have to wait for another 3 weeks to get the actual device as the launch date is 3rd of April in the US. • Thread Synchronization and Synchronization Primitives

  When considering synchronization in an application, the decision truly depends on what the application and its worker threads are going to do. I would use synchronization if two or more threads could possibly manipulate the same instance of an object at the same time. An example of this in C# can be demonstrated through the use of storing data in a static object. A static object is initialized once per application and the data within the object can be accessed by all threads. I would use the synchronization primitives to prevent any data from being manipulated by multiple threads simultaneously. This would reduce any data corruption from occurring within the object. On the other hand if all the threads used non static objects and were independent of the other tasks there would be no need to use synchronization. Synchronization Primitives in C#: Basic Blocking Locking Signaling Non-Blocking Synchronization Constructs The Basic Blocking methods include Sleep, Join, and Task.Wait.  These methods force threads to wait until other threads have completed. In addition, these methods can also force a thread to wait a set amount of time before continuing to work.   The Locking primitive prevents a thread from entering a critical section of code while another thread is in the same critical section.  If another thread attempts to enter a locked code, it will wait, until the code block is released. The Signaling primitive allows a thread to temporarily pause work until receiving a notification from another thread that it is ok to continue working. The Signaling primitive removes the need for polling.The Non-Blocking Synchronization Constructs protect access to a common field by calling upon processor primitives.

• Microphone on a Dell Vostro 3360

  After upgrading my vostro 3360 on Ubuntu 12.04, I saw that drivers were not available for this version (notably for network). So I decided to install 11.10 but the mic still doesn't work (notably on Skype, Gtalk etc.) I join the model of the audio device and the drivers which were installed before I upgraded to ubuntu 12.04 (I succeeded only in installing the network one) Can you help me to find the solution to this problem with my microphone? Je suis donc revenu sur Oneiric mais sans les drivers installés par Dell en usine. néanmoins, j'ai pris soin de noter leurs références (sans toutefois savoir si le micro fonctionne avec ces pilotes, mais cela me semble possible). Pourriez-vous me dire s'il est possible d'installer ces pilotes ? Ou alors si vous avez une solution concernant ce problème de micro ?
