• What other protocols must not be fire-walled for FTP to work?

  my Netgear router randomly reset itself the other day loosing all of my config settings: DSL details, Firewall rules, the lot! So I set about restoring all of the details manually, but when it came to configuring the firewall I wanted improve the security by explicitly setting 'deny' rules for everything that I figured is 'non-essential', and (although not necessary) whilst I was at it I set explicit 'allow' for the 'essential' protocols. I'll admit now I didn't really know what I was doing and everything was just 'my best guess', but I enabled only DNS, HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, SFTP, TFTP with everything else blocked. This did not work for me as I could not access 99% of web sites (although strangely Google worked!), so I played around a bit more and found that (oddly) if I disabled just the explicit 'allow' rules then everything worked fine, for browsing anyway. Today I came to work on some web-sites via FTP and just could not get a consistent connection, it kept dropping out after a few files or being blocked by the server or simply not connecting. It would authenticate okay but then stop when retrieving the initial directory listing! e.g.: Status: Delaying connection for 1 second due to previously failed connection attempt... Status: Resolving address of ftp.domain.co.uk Status: Resolving address of ftp.domain.co.uk Status: Connecting to 123.123.123.123:21... Status: Connecting to 123.123.123.123:21... I've checked and re-checked the FTP settings (they worked before anyway), I have Googled the I.T. out of the various protocols that I have blocked in the fire-wall but none seem essential to FTP (other than FTP/SFTP etc. which I have passively enabled). I'm (clearly) no server engineer, or protocols / fire-wall expert so I was hoping that some one could maybe shed some light on why my FTP is failing. I've been wondering if I ought to be allowing BGP, BOOTP and/or IDENT (or any others)? What other protocols are required for FTP? Thanks in advance!

• Is the recent Java bug something to worry about?

The fact that I cn visit a web site and it runs calc.exe on my local box is just plain scary... Why is there no bigger response to this??

• What is the RSA SecurID packet format?

  I am testing a client application that authenticates using RSA SecurID hardware tokens. The authentication is failing and I am not finding any useful information in the log files. I am using Authentication Manager 8.0 and the Java SDK. I have a traffic capture which I would like to analyze with Wireshark to and from port 5500 on the authentication agent. But I can't find the packet format searching the internet or on the the RSA SecurCare knowledge base. Can anybody direct me to the packet format? • Remotely from Chrome or IE page loads ~60seconds, from Firefox or IE on local machine - instantly.

  The problem: If i access SharePoint from Windows 7 with IE8 or Chrome5 - I must wait for like a minute to get a response. If i use other Windows 7 with IE8, just the same - just wait a MINUTE. If i use Firefox3.6 on W7 machine - page opens up instantly. Now switch to IE rendering engine in Firefox, you will have to wait just as with IE. Now i tried IE8 on XP SP3 - page opens up instantly. I tried IE8 on Windows Server 2003 SP2 (machine on which SharePoint is hosted) - page opens up instantly. • what does "crap" mean in samba logs

  Hi All, I have been googling and googling and can't find a conclusive answer. In log files for samba, I see things like the following: "[11560]: pam auth crap domain:" & "NTLM CRAP authentication for user" I'm hoping this stands for something like "Challenge Response Auth Protocol" or something, but when I show the logs to people that aren't technical, I usually get questions or looks. • I can't get the Samsung PC Studio to work on Vista or Windows 7

  Has anyone got a solution to this problem have asked Samsung but no reply yet! The software installs OK and the drivers, it sees the Tocco Lite when connected but will not actually connect! error message can't change mode or can't connect as "no response from the device because it is in the initializing stage. • Expose Windows LDAP address book on the internet

  I need to expose Active Directory, or at least the address book functions on the internet for some mail clients and other devices. The standard response is to simply not or vpn in, however VPN isn't an option for us with some of the hardware devices. A number collages expose their setups out to the internet so I'm assuming their has to be a safe way of doing it. Best option I've come up with to install a linux ldap host, then hourly sync over the relevant contact information however that seems like major overkill.

• Win Server 2008 Hanging on "Applying Computer Settings"

  Applied ~8 updates this morning, and on reboot the server just sits on "Applying Computer Settings". I've let it sit for a max of almost 40m with no response. I hard-booted (/duck) and can get into safe-mode. From there it applies it's updates and is ok. But still on normal boot gets stuck in "applying". I've tried uninstalling the updates from safe-mode with the same reaction. Any insights?

• SSH to an ubuntu machine using avahi

  I have an ubuntu box that I connect to using avahi. Connecting to that box works fine for all services (I regularly use AFP, SSH and SMB on it) but I've noticed that whenever I connect to it from a mac using SSH (and using the ".local" dns name provided by avahi - eg. "ssh .local") SSH tries to connect using ipv6, which for some reason times out (after two minutes) then it tries ipv4 which connects immediately. I'd like to avoid this timeout, as it's really annoying for me and other users - if SSH tried ipv4 first or if ssh over ipv6 worked then that would solve the problem. But so far I've been unable to get either to work (the best I've managed is to specify the "-4" option to SSH to stop it from trying ipv6 at all). I'm using Ubuntu 10.04. Any solution has to be on the server (not the client) as there are multiple clients connecting. A possible complication might be that my LAN is set up to allow link-local ipv6 addresses only, but I have other servers (using Mac OS) that I can SSH into using ipv6) I suspect that the problem could be solved by either preventing avahi from broadcasting the ipv6 address, or by enabling ssh over ipv6, but so far as I can tell avahi is already configured not to broadcast the ipv6 address and sshd is configured to allow ipv6 connections! • How to set the time HylaFax waits for the remote device to pick up

  I'm using HylaFax on one of my server to send facsimile to different devices which works pretty well except for one device. I'm not sure, but the problem might be, that the remote device takes to long to pick up and response to the call. I tested it by calling the fax number with my phone and it took 30 seconds till the remote side picked up. So is there a way to tell HylaFax how long it should wait for the remote device to answer?

  I am getting an error in my application on 500 Internal Server Error. • CNAME to another domain fails on some office networks, why?

  Our domain "aspenfasteners.com" is hosted by Volusion. We have CNAME records "find" and "search" which point to site indexing accounts on www.picosearch.com. These addresses fail on SOME private office networks which have their own DNS. We suspect the problem comes from Volusion's own name servers, n2.volusion.com and n3.volusion.com. Volusion support on problems this technical is non-existant. We have tried an NSLOOKUP on find.aspenfasteners.com with level 2 debugging info, and we got the results below. Is it possible that the local DNS is recursing to Volusion's name servers, and that while Volusion DOES return the canonical name, they do NOT resolve the address? Can anybody with expertise in this sort of stuff PLEASE look at the NSLOOKUP below and tell me if we are right, because Volusion is giving me absolutely NO support on this topic. • Sorting by Received and THEN Subject

  Can Outlook 2003 sort by received and then subject so that I can always see the newest mail first? So if it's 5:30pm now and I get mail at 5:31, it shows at the top. then if I get mail at 5:35 and it is a response to an existing subject, can it show next at the top of my inbox with all related conversations/subjects with it. Gmail can do this and this is what I'm looking for an Outlook.

• Statically Display Excel drop-down boxes

  I'm looking to present an Excel questionnaire I have written to the board, via either paper or presentation slides. It uses a lot of drop-down boxes, and so I'm looking for any ideas on how one might go about showing the options for each response (from the drop-down boxes), without having to manually print screen a bunch of times and pasting the results into Visio. Has anyone come across a nie easy, fast method of doing this?
