  • What emulation mode for an epson printer is best?

    I'm looking for a color duplex printer for Ubuntu. My favourites are Epson B-310N and Brother HL 4050CDN. The latter should be work with linux, but I'd prefer the first one, because printing costs are cheaper. The epson printer has "Epson ESC/P Raster", "PCL3", and "Epson ESC/P2" emulation. Can I use the printer with one of those emulations under linux? Were there any restrictions (like unusable duplex)?

  • HD Video on Pandaboard ES

    I am running Ubuntu 11.10 on my Pandaboard ES. I attempted to playback a 720p / 1080p video. In both cases, the videos were highly jittery and the audio seemed to be plagued with something that seemed to be white noise (sounds like white noise, but it definitely is not white noise). I was using VLC media player for playback and was running XFCE4 as the desktop ewnvironment. The system monitor graph indicates both the CPU cores running ~100%. Lower resolution videos seemed to play without problems. How do I play 1080 / 720 HD videos on pandaboard? Thanks in advance.

  • Parallelism implies concurrency but not the other way round right?

    I often read that parallelism and concurrency are different things. Very often the answerers/commenters go as far as writing that they're two entirely different things. Yet in my view they're related but I'd like some clarification on that. For example if I'm on a multi-core CPU and manage to divide the computation into x smaller computation (say using fork/join) each running in its own thread, I'll have a program that is both doing parallel computation (because supposedly at any point in time several threads are going to run on several cores) and being concurrent right? While if I'm simply using, say, Java and dealing with UI events and repaints on the Event Dispatch Thread plus running the only thread I created myself, I'll have a program that is concurrent (EDT + GC thread + my main thread etc.) but not parallel. I'd like to know if I'm getting this right and if parallelism (on a "single but multi-cores" system) always implies concurrency or not? Also, are multi-threaded programs running on multi-cores CPU but where the different threads are doing totally different computation considered to be using "parallelism"?

  • SSL setup with GoDaddy subdomains and EC2 servers

    We have two EC2 instances that are used to host various scripts. Our main page 'companyname.com' is hosted with GoDaddy but is unrelated to those EC2 instances. I need to setup SSL connections for the two EC2 microinstances, one running Linux AMI and the other running Windows Server. I purchased two single-domain Comodo certificates and am at the part to generate CSR's on the instances. I'm not sure what to put as "Server Name" on EC2. I would like each server to be accessible through a subdomain which I have forwarded on GoDaddy to the elastic IPs on EC2. For server name, do I use the elastic ip, the EC2 public dns, or the subdomain that I want? And which of these do I then place in my VirtualHosts file on Apache? The Windows instance is running IIS7 but the Apache box is priority.

    I have the following configuration, A host running Windows 7; A guest running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (VirtualBox); I am connecting a Cisco router directly to my PC running Windows 7 and testing the router for netflow packets in the virtualBox I am having a difficulty capturing the traffic of the netflow from the Cisco device in my virtualBox using port 2222. I tried to use the many different networking modes provided by virutalBox (i.e. NAT, Bridged Adapter, Host only adapter) but I am not successful in capturing the netflow traffic. Could you please advise me on the configuration setup that need to be done on the virtual box to allow capturing the traffic coming from the router. I successfully capture the netflow traffic on my PC (windows 7). Thank you

  • How to improve wireless network speed?

    I am running 10.04 LTS on a desktop PC with a Belkin G-Plus MIMO Wireless network card. Ever since running Ubuntu on the machine I have noticed fairly slow network speeds (about half the speed I get when running the same card through Windows) I did some research I found out that by and large wireless network cards aren't that well supported on most Linux distros. I was wondering though if there is anything I could be tweaking on the system that could help squeeze a little more out of the card?   • restoring grub when Windows 7 MBR lost it

    My dual boot desktop was running only Windows 7 until it crashed on a windows update. Couldn't get it started again even after all the usual things that might fix it, so I installed Ubuntu 12.04, which has worked very well. unfortunately Carbonite doesn't run on Linux yet, and so I called Microsoft support to see if we could be Windows 7 up and running. Their attempts to get Windows 7 running resulted in writing a new MBR for windows, which failed and also somehow caused the loss of ability to boot into Ubuntu also. How can I get back to Ubuntu? I don't want to lose my settings in Ubuntu. Thanks... Trent

  • No OpenCL devices (13.10 Core I5 4430 Intel Graphics HD)

    I've been looking quite a lot for this but couldn't find anything that worked. I have an Intel Core I5-4430 based system with no extra graphics adapter (so it's using the on-board, integrated Intel Graphics HD that is part of the CPU), running Ubuntu 13.10. When running BOINC World Community Grid it says "No usable GPUs". When running a bitcoin mining program it says "No OpenCL devices". I searched the web, found two possible solutions - one was to use the Intel OpenCL driver for Xeon platforms, the other was to use the AMD driver. Tried both. I failed installing the Intel driver as there were too many prerequisites that I just didn't manage to install, and the AMD installation was quite fast to its size (it's 200MB, and took far less than a minute to install), but it didn't solve the problem. Perhaps I'm looking in the wrong direction here, I'm not sure, but is there anyway I can utilize the advance features of my CPU for those distributed computation programs?

  • Pygame set_colorkey transparency issues

    I'm having a strange issue that I cannot seem to remedy. I am doing some prototyping with Pygame on a desktop running windows and a laptop running OS X. Both are running python v2.7.3 (installed via homebrew for the Macbook) and pygame v1.9.1. For transparency, I have been using set_colorkey with a transparency color of (255, 0, 255). Here is the applicable code: transColor = pygame.Color(255, 0, 255) image = pygame.image.load(playerPath + "idle.png").convert() image.set_colorkey(transColor) This works flawlessly on my windows machine. On my laptop, it does not work. It just shows the hideous magenta color. Here's the strange part. If I change the transColor to (0, 0, 0), all black pixels in my images are transparent. Has anyone run into this issue before?

  • Remmina remote control: black screen after XBMC exit

    I have a HTPC (Quietpc Sidewinder Fanless media pc) running Ubuntu 12.04 and autostarting XBMC Frodo. I'm remote controlling this machine using my laptop also running Ubuntu 12.04 and using Remmina VNC as a client. Everything works perfectly as long as XBMC is running: I can see the remote screen and control via mouse and keyboard on the laptop. However, when XBMC is stopped on the HTPC, my TV shows the Ubuntu desktop normally, but the screen on the laptop turns black. I'm however still controlling the HTPC since I can see the arrow moving upon laptop mouse movement, and I can still type text in the HTPC. Oddly, when the screensaver on the HTPC kicks in, I again have a visual on the laptop. Anyone any thoughts on this? What should I do to maintain visual after stopping XBMC? Any suggestions much appreciated. Thanks!

  • Unable to keep the connecting using a wireless bridge

    I am running Ubuntu 12.04 on a dell inspiron desktop (core 2 duo) and am using wicd to manage my network/wifi. I've found that the WiFi card in the machine has trouble staying connected to my router (I believe this is a function of distance between the two), so I've taken an old Belkin F5d7231 wireless router and installed dd-wrt on it to use as a wireless bridge hoping that it will have better reception. I think everything up through the wireless bridge is working OK since I have no problems accessing the internet through it with my MacBook. The problem arises when I try to hook the ubuntu machine up to the wireless bridge. It will connect for a few minutes, but it will quickly disconnect without clear triggering event; it may be more likely to disconnect if there is a heavy traffic load going over it (could be something as simple as "cat big_text_file" in an ssh session). I've tried switching from dhclient to dhcpcd without much improvement.     I am not very experienced with non-windows operating systems, so please if you can answer, consider me to be a complete newbie with this. I have a Ubuntu Server 12.04, I installed Wine on it so I could install some familiar programs with GUI on my Ubuntu. I installed Filezilla Server using Wine, that went fine, the server is running, but I cannot find the GUI anywhere. I know it is running because in the winefile, if I execute the filezille server.exe, it says it is already running. However I have not been able to configure anything on the filezilla server because I can't see it anywhere. What am I missing?

  • Why ubuntu does not use the kernels installed by automatic update?

    I used the script describe in this question to list the kernel installed on the computer : How do I to remove or hide old kernel versions, to clean up the boot menu? In the 3.2.0, I have 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39, 41, 43, 44, 45 and 48. I would expect to be running 3.2.0-48 after a reboot, but I am still running 3.2.0-32. Why the kernels installed by auto update are not used? [I am running 12.04 LTS] /boot/grub/menu.lst was modified for the last time June 16 2013, it contains 3.2.0-32-generic 2.6.32-45-generic 2.6.32-44-generic 2.6.32-43-generic A recovery for each of those and a memtest. I would have expected the kernel between 3.2.0-33 to 3.2.0-48 to be in this file before 3.2.0-32.
