• Guiding a Robot Through a Path

  I have a field filled with obstacles, I know where they are located, and I know the robot's position. Using a path-finding algorithm, I calculate a path for the robot to follow. Now my problem is, I am guiding the robot from grid to grid but this creates a not-so-smooth motion. I start at A, turn the nose to point B, move straight until I reach point B, rinse and repeat until the final point is reached. So my question is: What kind of techniques are used for navigating in such an environment so that I get a smooth motion? The robot has two wheels and two motors. I change the direction of the motor by turning the motors in reverse. EDIT: I can vary the speed of the motors basically the robot is an arduino plus ardumoto, I can supply values between 0-255 to the motors on either direction.

• Firewall will not play ball

  I'm running SQL Server 2008 Express on a windows 2012... or at least I'm trying to :) My problem is that I have opened the ports I thought I needed but still I cant manage to connect to the database from Visual Studio. As proof I have a screenshot of my firewall settings: Everything works fine if I turn the firewall off, but who wants that while connected to the internet? So I wonder what the heck is wrong? • Silverlight Line Graph with Gradient

  I have a series of points which I will turn into a line on a graph. What I want is to give the area under the graph a gradient fill. It would look somewhat similar to a Bloomberg graph like this; My question really has three parts; First, how should I fill only the area under the graph? Second, how do I fill that with a gradient? Finally, if I have multiple lines on the same graph any area under more than one line should have a greyscale gradient fill, how would you set this up? My biggest problem is deciding on the data structures to use, I could use many multiple sided shapes (One for each line/ data series) and then tell the brush to draw; Transparent if it's not in any shape The colour of one series if it's in one shape (Alpha relative to height to give grad) Black if it's in multiple shapes (Alpha relative to height to give grad) Then I'd draw the shapes' boundaries in white afterwards. • Multiple complete HTTP requests stuck in TCP CLOSE_WAIT state

  I have a Java and Tomcat-based server application which initiates many outbound HTTP requests to other web sites. We use Jakarta's HTTP Core/Client libraries, very latest versions. The server locks up at some point since all its worker threads are stuck trying to close completed HTTP connections. Using 'lsof' reveals a bunch of sockets stuck in TCP CLOSE_WAIT state. This doesn't happen for all, or even most connections. In fact, I saw it before and resolved it by making sure to set the Connection: Close response header. So that makes me think it may be bad behavior of remote servers. It may have come up again since I moved the app to a totally new service provider -- different OS, network situation. But, I am still at a loss as to what I could do, if anything, to work around this. Some poking around on the internet didn't turn up anything I'm not already doing. Just thought I'd ask if anyone has seen and solved this?

• Can an app use the clipboard for its own purposes? (read: who owns the clipboard?)

  In PowerBuilder's IDE, the code autocomplete feature uses the clipboard to communicate the completed text to the code window. By doing so, it overrides whatever was stored on the clipboard before. So, if you had the winning numbers of the next lottary stored on your clipboard, and you used the autocomplete to turn m_goodfor into m_goodfornothing, you've just lost your only chance of ever getting rich, and you're left with nothing on your clipboard. Features like that are the reason I hate software. It looks like it was implemented by some intern that noone was looking after. However, there's also a chance I got all worked up for nothing, and making such use of the clipboard is absolutely legit. So, can an app use the clipboard for its own purposes? Who is considered the owner of the clipboard? (Bonus votes to whoever puts himself in place of the feature's programmer, and provides some reasoning for this being done on purpose, assuming the users would actually benefite from it)

• Change input text to regular text on blur and ability to edit jQuery

  I'm creating a form where I'm eliminating the use of a save button. The form is made up of input text boxes and textareas. After the user enters data into the input field, I want to trigger an onBlur function and change the input into a span that contains the information that the user entered. I also want to have the ability to edit this information, so if the user clicks on the newly created span with text, it will turn back into the input field with the current information for their editing pleasure. For reference, I'm looking to have a functionality pretty much like on editing a photo title on Flickr. If possible, I'd also like to have the textbox show "saving..." for half a second after the blur to reflect interaction with server.

• Best way to handle SQL Server fulltext index updates

  Hi all, I have a fulltext index which doesn't need to be immediately up-to-date, I'd like to spare myself the I/O (when I do bulk updates, I see a ton of I/O related to the index) and do the index updates during low usage times (nightly, perhaps even weekly). It seems there are two ways to go about this: Turn off change tracking (SET CHANGE_TRACKING OFF) and add a timestamp field to the indexed table, so that you can run alter fulltext index on <table> start INCREMENTAL population, or Enable change tracking, but set it to MANUAL, so that you can run alter fulltext index on <table> start UPDATE population when you need it updated. Is there a preferred method? I couldn't tell from this overview if there was a performance benefit one way or the other. Tom

• My code works in Debug mode, but not in Release mode.

  Hi, I have a code in Visual Studio 2008 in C++ that works with files just by fopen and fclose. Everything works perfect in Debug mode. and I have tested with several datasets. But it doesn't work in release mode. It crashes all the time. I have turned off all the optimizations, also there is no dependency to anything(in the linker), and also I have set these: Optimization: Disabled(/Od) Keep Unreferenced Data. Do Not Remove Redundant Optimize for Windows98: NO I still keep wondering how it should not work under these circumstances. What else should I turn off to let it works as in debug mode? I think if it works in release mode but not in debug mode, it might be a coding fault but the other way looks weird. isn't it? I appreciate any help. --Nima

• Packet Crafting on a Mac

  I think (based on searching the forums), that NetCat is the best option, but wanted to hear if others are preferable. Anyone have good success with a packet-crafting tool (specifically on Mac)? I've tried HPing, but had some issues. I'm looking into NetCat ('nc' on mac) now, but it's not working as I had thought. Basically, I captured some packets that a remote control sends over a wifi network to turn lights on and off (using X10 controllers), and am looking for a way to replay them by crafting a TCP packet from the command line. I used Wireshark to sniff the traffic, so I know the package is: DEVICE -sendplc-"C4 DIM 10" I'm trying: echo 'DEVICE -sendplc-"C4 DIM 10"' nc 192.168.2.196 6003 but there's no response from the receiving system. • How to simulate postback in nested usercontrols?

  Hi all, I'm doing an asp.net application with one page. In this page, I have one usercontrol defined. This usercontrol has a menu (three buttons) and 3 usercontrols defined too. Depending on the clicked button one of the three usercontrols turn to visible true or false. In these three usercontrols I have a button and a message, and I want to show the message "It's NOT postback" when the button of the menu is clicked, and when the button of the usercontrol is clicked the message will be "YES, it's postback!!!". The question is that using property "IsPostBack" of the usercontrol or the page the message will never be "It's NOT postback" because of the clicked button of the menu to show the nested usercontrol. This is the structure of the page: page parent usercontrol menu nested usercontrol 1 message button nested usercontrol 2 nested usercontrol 3 I know it can be done using ViewState but, there is a way to simulate IsPostBack property or know when is the true usercontrol postback? • Drupal 6 / Views2 Grid style: whole cells link to nodes

  I have a Users page, which is simply a nicely styled grid (HTML table) of users. I'm displaying a few fields for each one, and both the name and the profile picture have been set to link to the user node. What is the best way to change it so that the whole cell (HTML td) links to the user node? Would you have to use javascript? I've looked into modifying the theme of the view (over-riding the Style output e.g. views-view-grid--users.tpl.php), but cant see an elegant way to get the URL of the user node. And I think you would have to use javascript anyway to turn a whole block element into a link.

  I have a set of values that I'm pushing into an array in the order they occur $valsArray = array(); //I process each value from a file (code removed for simplicity) //and then add into the array $valsArray[] = $val; How do I turn this into an associative array instead where the value gets inserted (as $key of associative array) only if it doesn't exist. If it does exist increment its count ($value of associative array) by 1. I'm trying to find a more efficient way of handling those values compared to what I'm doing now.

• Can't declare even the most simple class in PHP - Am I going insane?

  I'm getting this error whenever I attempt to declare a class: Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_VARIABLE, expecting T_OLD_FUNCTION or T_FUNCTION or T_VAR or '}' in /home3/foundloc/public_html/booka/page2.php on line 7 (line 7 is the class declaration by the way). • Turning on screen programmatically

  Hi, I would like to unlock screen and switching it on to show a popup on an event trigger. I am able to unlock the screen using newKeyguardLock = km.newKeyguardLock(HANDSFREE); newKeyguardLock.disableKeyguard(); on KeyGuardService but I cannot turn on the screen. I am using wl = pm.newWakeLock(PowerManager.SCREEN_BRIGHT_WAKE_LOCK, HANDSFREE); wl.acquire(); but with no success. The screen still remains off. How can I achieve this? Thanks in advance.   Hi Iam looking for a php parser that can do this. {tag} Replace the tag with text comming from a function {tag(params)} It must support params {tag({tag(params)},{tag(params)})} It must support nesting {tag()? else } It must support Tests {$tag=value} It must support varriables Do anyone of you know of an parser that can do this? Or maby you know how i can create one. I have tryed to do this with preg, but it seems impossible to create nesting. Smarty seems to be a bit to big, and i dont know if you can disable all the extra functionality it has. I only need the functionality that i have listet over. In smarty your able to write php code and i dont like that. {php} {/php} So if iam going to use that i need to be able to turn it of. (Iam going to use it with codeigniter.)

• Flex: Would a computational engine for a Connect-4 type game be too slow?

  OK, I was just fooling around in my spare time and have made this cool interface and game-playing code for a Connect-4 type game, written in Flex and playable by 2 human players in Flash. It accurately detects wins, etc. I'm smart enough to know that I've done the easy part. Before I dig into an AI for game play, I wanted to ask if this is the kind of thing that can really be handled computationally by a Flash plugin. It seems to me that for every turn up until the end there are 8 possible moves, 8 responses to each move, etc. So wouldn't a perfect engine have to be able to potentially see 8^8 moves (over 16 million), and a fairly good engine see up to a million? I don't know game coding so this is new to me. What's a reasonable move horizon for such a game to be able to see?

• Why dont Android applications provide an "Exit" option?

  Is there something in the Android developer guidelines that disuadea developers from providing the option to "exit" (stop running) an application from within the application itself? I love multitasking and all but it's not clear to me why: the vast majority of apps don't have their own Exit functions and hence just keep running forever don't give you a choice about running when you turn on the phone - they just do by default Both of these things lead to memory usage constantly increasing and your device running with this performance burden all of the time despite the fact that you may only want certain apps to run some of the time. Am I missing something?

• How can I compile a Perl script inside a running Perl session?

  I have a Perl script that takes user input and creates another script that will be run at a later date. I'm currently going through and writing tests for these scripts and one of the tests that I would like to perform is checking if the generated script compiles successfully (e.g. perl -c <script>.) Is there a way that I can have Perl perform a compile on the generated script without having to spawn another Perl process? I've tried searching for answers, but searches just turn up information about compiling Perl scripts into executable programs.

• How to set Atomikos to not write to console logs?

  Atomikos is quite verbose when used. There seems to be lots of INFO messages (mostly irrelevant for me) that the transaction manager writes out to the console. The setting in the transaction.properties that is suppose to control the level of messaging com.atomikos.icatch.console_log_level does not seem to have any effect, since even when set to WARN (or ERROR) the INFO messages are still logged. Also the log4j settings for com.atomikos and atomikos seem to be ignored. Does anyone manage to turn off the INFO logs on the console with Atomikos?. How? Thanks Peter

  Hi, I've created a custom user model in my application. This user model is working fine, but there are a couple of problems I have with it. 1) The change password link in the my register.html page doesn't work? 2) The default password box on the add/edit page for a user is a little unfriendly. Ideally, what I'd like is the two password fields from the change password form on the add/edit user form in the admin, which will automatically turn convert the entered password into a valid encrypted password in Django. This would make the admin system MUCH friendlier and much more suited to my needs, as a fair number of user accounts will be created and maintained manually in this app, and the person responsible for doing so will likely be scared off at the sight of that admin field, or just type a clear text password and wonder why it doesn't work. Is this possible / How do I do this?

  Hi there, In my database I have a lot of users who've misspelled their e-mail address. This in turn causes my postfix to bounce a lot of mails when sending the newsletter. Forms include (but are not limited to) "yaho.com", "yahho .com" etc. Very annoying! So i have been trying to update those record to the correct value. After executing select email from users where email like '%@yaho%' and email not like '%yahoo%'; and getting the list, I'm stuck because I do not know how to update only the yaho part. I need the username to be left intact. So I thought I would just dump the database and use vim to replace, but I cannot escape the @ symbol.. BTW, how do I select all email addresses written in CAPS? select upper(email) from users; would just transform everything into CAPS, whereas I just needed to find out the already-written-in-CAPS mails.

Form f = new Form() ; f.Text = "" ; f.ControlBox =false ; Now How to remove the all the borders on the form except one sides? As in, the side borders should go , but the top border should stay FormBorderStyle doesn't have anything for this Also how do you people solve such problems yourself , without asking ? look at others code ? read a a book ? any particular website ? I have googled , but it didn't turn up nothing.

• Editing and iPhone SDK Framework ?

  I am working with MapKit and want to be able to add a (NSString *)itemTag value to each of my annotations. I have created myAnnotiation.m and myAnnotation.h I tried adding itemTag to the myAnnotation.h/m but when I try to access currentAnnotation.itemTag within my main code, it says "itemID not found in protocols" - so I went to the MapKit.Framework and into MKAnnotation.h. I added (NSString *)itemID, but when I save the .h file in the Framework, it changes the file's icon and doesn't appear to by jiving with everything else. Any help or links to help would be greatly appreciated. I am not even sure if I'm on the right path here, but Googling "modify iphone sdk framework" does not turn up much.
