• How to configure Linux to open files by extension?

  The various Linux's desktops open files according to their mime type. This is a very nice feature but I also need to open them by extension (as with Windows). For instance, I want to open every xxxxx.vnc files with a specific program when I double-click on them. I use xfce but I don't think it differs from Gnome or KDE because all of them use the same configuration files (defaults.list and mimeapps.list). If possible the settings are user specific, not system wide. I've found some very poor informations about that, and all are system wide, so may be wiped out by some updates.

• UPS: Do i require a special extension cord for power in?

  I have a couple of Tripplite UPS systems. The power in cables are bright orange and about 2 meters in length. I want to put the system on the other side of the room but for some reason the UPS keep "going off" over there. So I guess the wall power sockets on that side of the room are a little dodgy. So i figured Id just go online and get some replacement UPS power IN (from wall to UPS) cables of an appropriate length. But i cant find any anywhere. (auction sites, tripplite store, cable websites). So now I'm wondering if that's just because you can use a standard extension cord of an appropriate wattage? I thought the UPS power IN cables were "special". Is that not so?

• Fixing corrupt files or corrupt file table on a USB drive?

  I was doing a virus scan on an external USB drive while copying data over to it. While AVG was scanning my system got locked up I think due to the USB drive running out of space and it required a reboot. Since that time all data on the external drive is no longer accessible. I can see all the files in the root and directories but I cannot browse into any of them as Windows 7 gives an error stating they are corrupt. I think the file table or whatever it uses to store the index of what exists on the drive has been corrupted since it still shows the the drive as being almost full but everything I do a properties check on says it is 0 bytes. Does anyone know how to 'unlock' or recover this data? Is there a way to rebuild the file table somehow? Luckily I can recover this data from other sources as a last resort but I would like to fix this if possible. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

  Mostly I still have that old 'ultraportable' laptop that is mostly like a pre-netbook era laptop and a friend and programmer needs a computer because the one he was using just broke and he has to wait until the new one arrive in 4-6 weeks ... This laptop has no LAN connection and CD-ROM so be prepared for a real challenge! All hardware is well supported on Windows XP (included drivers on the Windows XP CD) and on Linux out-of-the-box (but the screen need a special configuration.) Mostly any Linux that will work well with Skype (USB or regular headset), any MSN client and a text writer for code will do. What I have tested so far: Slitaz 2 don't boot because the floppy of GRUB4DOS don't see the USB drive (fully working and tested on my regular laptop), Damn Small Linux was working but was needing a special screen configuration that I don't remember (in the boot options of the floppy) and now I'm thinking about Puppy Linux that is seen to work totally out of the box with it but I will need an old Puppy version (1 or 2 I think) and the Wakepup floppy ... If you got some ideas to help or to try I'm open!

  I have a file explorer shell extension called "Copy File Path" or "Copy Folder Path", depending on which pane I am in in file explorer, which copies the full path of a file or a folder to the clipboard. Because it's very handy for me, I use it many times during the day. To make it more productive, I would like to assign a function key to it instead of using the right mouse click context menu, looking for it in the menu (big menu because of many extensions) and selecting it. The way I want to use it is select the file with the mouse and hit the function key. Is there a utility or tool, tray taskmaybe, which can add this functionality to Windows?

• OpenSolaris livecd, NForce NIC driver, and NTFS USB mounting. Oh My!

  I'm attempting to install OpenSolaris 2009.06 on my server. Before I do I would like to test that everything works and am running in to problems. It has an Abit AN-M2 motherboard with an NForce chipset. The driver config utility says that I need a third-party driver and links me to http://homepage2.nifty.com/mrym3/taiyodo/eng/. Scrolling to the bottom, I have downloaded both tgzs just in case. Now the fun part: The only way to get this on to the computer is via a USB drive since I can't access the network. Also, install CD in the drive otherwise I'd just burn them to DVD. Since my USB key is NTFS formatted I cannot mount it since the install CD seems to be lacking NTFS drivers which require more downloaded packages. What should I do? The server will simply be a dumb NAS and I know that there exists other OpenSolaris-based flavors such as Nexenta but from what I read the stock install is likely the best. If this is not the case and pursuing a different flavor is required or better I will also accept that as an answer (but please don't jump straight to it).

• Is there a Google Chrome extension or userscript that will "bottom-justify" form fields?

  When using Google Chrome, I would like to have a page scroll up so the bottom of form fields are at or above the bottom of the window when I click in the text input to begin entering something. However, if the form height is larger than the window, the top should not be scrolled off automatically. I want to go from: to: An bonus essential feature would be for the input box to automatically be resized in height (but not width) to fill the window. This feature ideally would be configurable: enable/disable and margin above and below. There should be no scrolling or resizing for one-line input boxes. Is there an extension or userscript that does something like this?

• Access denied to external USB disk; update access rights fails in Windows 8

  I use to work with 2 laptops (Windows vista and Windows 7), my work files being on an external usb disk. My oldest laptop broke down, so I bought a new one. I had no option other than take Windows 8. I suspect something changed with access rights, as my external disk suffered some "access denied" problem on Windows. I was prompted (by Windows 8) somehow to fix the access rights, which I tried to do, getting to the properties - security. This process was very slow and ended up saying disk is not ready Additionally, my external usb disk somehow was not recognized anymore. Back to Windows 7, I was warned that my disk needed to be verified, which I did. In this process, some files were lost (most of them I could recover from the folder found00x, but I have some backup anyway). Also, I don't know why, but under Windows 7, all the folder showed with a lock. Then back again to Windows 8. Same problem : access denied to my disk + no way to change access rights as it gets stuck disk is not ready". Now I am pretty sure there is some kind of bug or inconsistency in Windows 8 / Windows 7. I did 2. and 3. a few times. At some point, I also got an access denied in Windows 7. I could restore access rights to the disk to "System" (properties - security - EDIT for full control to group "system". ). But then I still get the same access right pb on Windows 8, and getting stuck in the process to restore full control to "system" -- and "admin" groups. I upgraded Windows8 with the Windows8 updates available. Does not help.

• How to boot XBMC 10.1 ISO on USB via grub?

  I am trying to boot the XBMC Live image (http://xbmc.org/download/) as ISO from USB via grub 1.98. I have a Kubuntu 11.04 image there as well already and it works using the following configuration: menuentry "Kubuntu 11.04 64bit" { loopback loop /boot/iso/kubuntu-11.04-desktop-amd64.iso linux (loop)/casper/vmlinuz boot=casper iso-scan/filename=/boot/iso/kubuntu-11.04-desktop-amd64.iso noeject noprompt initrd (loop)/casper/initrd.gz } However, if I try to boot XBMC in an analogue way, I always get an error "Unable to find a medium containing a live file system". I found different approaches to install XBMC, but they all are about installing the distribution on USB, or using grub4dos, or unetbootin. I already found out that XBMC 10.1 is based on Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS, so I tried those settings - even though they are quite similar to Kubuntu 11.04. Finally, the ISO contains a grub configuration as well in boot/grub/grub.cfg, but even with those parameters, I get the error above. • `for` loop of Microsoft `cmd`: how can I process only the files with a certain extension?

  I have a the folder c:\test\ and two files in it a.txt and b.txtv. I would like to process just the files with extension equal to .txt. If I write this commands cd c:\test for %f in (*.txt) do echo %f I will get the result where both a.txt and b.txtv are listed. The same happens with cd c:\test dir *.txt It seems .txt is the same of .txtv. I have Windows XP SP3 in Italian and the result of ver is Microsoft Windows XP [Versione 5.1.2600]. The same result is from Windows 7 in English Microsoft Windows XP [Version 6.1.7601].

  My friend has an Asus Eee PC 1018P. It has no CD/DVD drive (neither does he have a USB CD/DVD drive). The OS wasn't working fine, so we decided to restore the system using the provided OS backup from HD. But mid way through the installation it was interrupted and the computer was restarted (not a hardware or software issue – we did it). Now we cannot run the backup and we also tried to install Windows 7 through USB, but as soon as we start to install the OS, it says that some device driver is missing. It turns out that the OS needs a USB device driver to continue. It has USB 3.0 – maybe that's why the OS needs the driver. I tried disabling 3.0 and enabling 2.0 but then it does not boot from USB drive for some reason. We are stuck with this. The backup doesn't run and when booting from USB, it says that it needs a device driver. Anyone has any idea what we could do?

  Hi, I have just gotten my Lenovo X200s laptop, and I am install Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic on it. • Ubuntu, No wireless networks found after correctly installed madwifi

  Hi, I just installed madwifi on my MSI laptop with an Atheros AR5001 wifi card & Lucid. As far as I can see and according to System - Administration - Hardware drivers the install was successful and the card + driver is up and running. However, I don't see any wireless network (my windows PC can see about 5 wireless networks). I tried it with the network manager applet as well as with wicd. If I try to connect to "Hidden Wireless Network" via nm-applet, it will start to connect for a while but is unable too (although I supply it with the correct WEP settings & key) So, I'm unable to use my wireless network. What am i doing wrong? • How do I setup unison to sync a folder one way

  I have a 1tb NAS that has a 1tb usb external hard attached I have prepared the file system on the usb disk and mounted it I want to 100% sync my data from my nas to the usb disk - but I want it to be incremental and only have the NAS as the 'master' - eg if a file changes on the usb external hard drive I want it to ignore this change as its not the live version (not that I think the files will change on the usb disk but im paranoid the live could get overwritten) Also if a file gets deleted on live I want to retain the deleted file on the usb disk Can unison sync one-way and achive the above for me? if so with simply unison sorce/ target/ Work? • Wireless not working - HP Probook 4540s

  I just installed Ubuntu 12.04 on 3 HP Probook 4540s's, and none of them seems to be able to connect to wireless networks. I have 1 Probook 4540s with Windows 7 installed and I can access wlan from it. I tried installing the necessary drivers from HP's website, but it still doesn't seem to be working. I've seen other people with different Probooks having similar problems, but their computers seem to be able to detect and even attempt to connect wlans, while mine doesn't even acknowledge that it has wireless. • Move Firefox’s Tab Bar to the Top

  Would you prefer to have Firefox’s Tab Bar located at the top of the browser instead of its’ default location? See how easy it is to move the Tab Bar back and forth between the top and current positions “flip switch style” with the Tabs On Top extension. Note: Tabs On Top extension supports multi-row feature in TabMixPlus. Before You can see the “Tab Bar” in its’ default location here in our test browser…not bad but what if you prefer having it located at the top of the browser? After As soon as you have installed the extension and restarted Firefox the “Tab Bar” will have automatically moved to the top of the browser. You will most likely notice a slight decrease in tab height as well (which occurred during our tests). To move the “Tab Bar” back and forth between the top and default locations just select/deselect “Tab Bar on top” in the “Toolbars Context Menu”. You can quickly reduce the size of the upper UI after hiding some of the other toolbars and go even further if you like using extensions that will hide the “Title Bar”. This is definitely a good UI matching extension for anyone using a Chrome based theme in Firefox. Conclusion If you are unhappy with default location for Firefox’s “Tab Bar” then this extension will certainly provide an alternative option for you. • Set Firefox to Be On Top of Other Windows

  Sometimes you need to keep a close watch on a website and have Firefox remain in view regardless of the other apps running. See how you can keep Firefox in constant view with the Always on Top extension. Before If you have a webpage that you like to watch throughout the day but have a very busy desktop then Firefox can get lost in all of the clutter. Note: You can read about the ReloadEvery extension here. Even with a widescreen monitor sometimes there is just not enough room to keep everything in easy view while you are working on something. Always on Top in Action Once you have installed the extension you will notice that a new Toolbar Button has automatically been added to your Navigation Toolbar. At the moment this is the only on/off switch for the extension. Clicking on the Toolbar Button will enable Always on Top and the button will change to a blue color to indicate its’ active status. Click on it again to disable it. Do anything that you like in the other windows…Firefox will still be the topmost window and easy to view. Conclusion The Always on Top extension was made to do just one thing and it does it very well…keeping your Firefox window on top. Being able to turn it on or off without digging through a bunch of menus adds that extra level of convenience. • How to zero out a drive?

  I'm currently running Ubuntu 12.04 and want to completely format my laptop so I can install Windows 7 (replace Ubuntu). When I put in my bootable USB with the OS it just shows a black screen with a white blinking cursor on the top left corner. I wait for hours (to be specific 5 whole hours) waiting for something to happen but I get nothing, so I pull out the USB and my Ubuntu 12.04 loads up. Repeated this several times with putting different boot priority options on top-est that relate to USB but the results are same. I go and visit some sites on the net like this http://www.techspot.com/community/topics/cant-replace-ubuntu-with-windows.175716/ that say I have to zero out my hard drive. My question is how? Note: Erasing out all my data is no problem cause I have nothing important to backup. If I have to lose my primary OS (Ubuntu 12.04) in the process I am ready to as my aim is just to install Windows 7 successfully. Please don't answer that there is something wrong with my USB or my USB reader/port/hardware or the content inside the USB cause they all works fine on my brothers PC as it boots up flawlessly.

• Macbook Pro 13" Retina (10,2): Keyboard and Touchpad don't work

  I'm dealing with Ubuntu since about 5 years and installed it on several laptops. Now I'm stuck when trying to install Ubuntu 12.04.1 on a brand new Macbook Pro 13" Retina (10,2). I sucessfully can start Ubuntu from an USB stick, the Ubuntu desktop is visible, a mouse cursor is visible. But there is no respond to keyboard or touchpad input. So I cannot really install Ubuntu on the Macbook. The details of my approach: Prepare an empty USB stick Download "ISO 2 USB EFI Booter for Mac" and copy the file bootX64.efi to the USB drive as /efi/boot/bootX64.efi. Download Ubuntu 12.04.1 Desktop for Mac from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/1-amd64+mac.iso and copy the iso the USB drive as /efi/boot/boot.iso Put the USB stick into the Macbook Press and hold the "alt" button while switching the Macbook on Select "EFI Boot" from the boot menu that appears and press the Return / Enter key Immediately a black terminal screen appears with the headline "Welcome to the Ubuntu ISO << - EFI booter". 30 seconds later the familiar Ubuntu startup graphics screen is showing. Further 20 seconds later Ubuntu has started and the desktop is visible - in wonderfully fine resolution Now the computer does not respond to any actions on the touchpad nor the keyboard Who did install Ubuntu on this Macbook Pro 13" Retina (10,2) successfully? On this site https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBookPro this unit is not listed yet, anyway. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Dirk

• Cannot install Ubuntu on an Acer Aspire One 756

  I have used Ubuntu before, in virtual machines, but today I decided to make the leap and I bought a netbook to install Ubuntu as a "real" OS alongside Windows. The netbook I bought is an Acer Aspire One 756, with a 64-bit Intel processor, 4GB RAM, and Windows 8 as the default OS. I have now encountered several obstacles that actually prevent me from installing Ubuntu 12.10. Here are all the things I have tried so far: Used a live CD, in combination with a USB DVD drive. (I should point out that the Aspire One does not have an optical drive.) The computer does not boot in Ubuntu; the drive keeps spinning, but nothing happens, even though I changed the boot order in the BIOS. Used a USB drive created via the tool available on pendrivelinux.com. Again, I've made changes to the BIOS to make sure the computer tries to boot from USB before using the built-in HDD. The results vary in this case: sometimes, the computer keeps rebooting like crazy until I remove the USB drive, at which point the computer boots into Windows 8, as expected. If I use a different USB drive, I get an error message that says that the USB drive has been blocked due to "the current security policy". Tried to install Ubuntu via Wubi. The program appears to install something, but at some point during the installation process, I get a non-specified error message and nothing else happens. I am not sure if these are known issues; in any case, searching the forum has not yielded any results, so I thought I should simply describe my problem here in the hope that this question has not been answered before. I would greatly appreciate any help with this annoying problem. Of course, if anything is unclear, do not hesitate to ask for further details.
