• InvalidProgramException Running Unit Test (Bug Closed)

  In a previous post I reported an InvalidProgramException that occurs in a certain circumstance with unit tests involving accessors on a private generic method.  It turns out that Bug #635093 reported through Microsoft Connect will not be fixed. The reason cited is that private accessors have been discontinued.  And why have private accessors been discontinued?  They don't have time is the reason listed in the blog post titled "Generation of Private Accessors (Publicize) and Code Generation for Visual Studio 2010". In my opinion, it's a piss poor decision to discontinue support for a feature that they're still using within automatically generated unit tests against private classes and methods.  But, I think what is worse is the lack of guidance cited in the aforementioned blog post.  Their advice?  Use the PrivateObject to help, but develop your own framework. At the end of the day what Microsoft is saying is, "I know you spent a lot of money for this product.  I know that you don't have time to develop a framework to deal with this.  We don't have time and that is all that's important."

One of the most popular question, I often receive is very similar to following: “How do I reset the password for SA username?” “I have forgotten the SA password, what should I do?” “Our DBA just left the job and now noone knows how to reset the SA password. Please help.” Solution Honestly, it is pretty simple to reset the password for SA username. You just have to login to the system where your SQL Server is installed. Open SQL Server Management Studio and login with the help of Windows Authentication. As local system is the admin of the SQL Server, you will get access with administration privileges. Now, open the database, expand Security >> Login folder and right click over SA username. Now, it will bring up the screen where you can change the password for SA. • Attend my GTC sessions

  The last GTC conference in the US was 2 years ago and I was there as an attendee. You may recall from that blog post that we were running UX studies at the time. It really feels great 2 years later, to be back at GTC presenting two sessions on C++ AMP, demonstrating our progress that includes input from those early studies. If you are attending GTC (in person or virtually later), be sure to watch my two-part session. Part 1 is S0242 on Wednesday 5pm and part 2 is S0244 on Thursday 10am. Here is the shared abstract for both parts: Harnessing GPU Compute with C++ AMP C++ AMP is an open specification for taking advantage of accelerators like the GPU. In this session we will explore the C++ AMP implementation in Microsoft Visual Studio 11 Beta. After a quick overview of the technology understanding its goals and its differentiation compared with other approaches, we will dive into the programming model and its modern C++ API. • Dryad and DryadLINQ from MSR

  Microsoft Research (MSR) researches technologies, incubates projects which many times result in technology that looks like a ready-to-use product (but it is important to understand that these are not the same as products built by the various… actual product teams here at Microsoft). A very popular MSR project has been DryadLINQ, which itself builds on Dryad. To learn more follow the project pages I just linked to and I also recommend this 1-hour channel 9 video. If you only have 3 minutes, watch this great elevator pitch instead. You can also stay tuned on the official blog, which includes a post that refers to internal adoption e.g by Bing, a quick DryadLINQ code example, and some history on how DryadLINQ generalizes the MapReduce pattern and makes it accessible to regular programmers (see this post and that post). Essentially, the DryadLINQ framework (building on the Dryad runtime) allows developers to re-use their LINQ skills for creating/generating programs that process large multi-gigabyte/terabyte datasets across 100s-1000s of machines. One way to think about it is that just as Parallel LINQ allows LINQ developers to seamlessly use multiple cores from a single process on a single machine, DryadLINQ allows LINQ developers to seamlessly use multiple machines for their data parallel algorithms. In the former scenario the motivation was speed of execution, in the latter it is speed of execution AND processing large datasets that simply don't fit on a single machine. Whenever I hear about execution of parallel code on multiple machines on the Microsoft platform, I immediately think of Windows HPC Server. So I was thinking, would it be possible to let non-sysadmin users query DMVs on a SQL server but stop them querying this I/O intensive DMV ? Yes it is, here’s how… 1. Create a new login for test purposes, with permissions to access AdventureWorks database only … CREATE LOGIN [test] WITH PASSWORD='xxxx', DEFAULT_DATABASE=[AdventureWorks] GO USE [AdventureWorks] GO CREATE USER [test] FOR LOGIN [test] WITH DEFAULT_SCHEMA=[dbo] GO 2.login as user test and issue command SELECT  * FROM sys.dm_db_index_physical_stats(DB_ID('AdventureWorks'),NULL,NULL,NULL,'DETAILED') gets error :-  Msg 297, Level 16, State 12, Line 1 The user does not have permission to perform this action. 3.As a sysadmin, issue command :- USE AdventureWorks GRANT VIEW DATABASE STATE TO [test] or GRANT VIEW SERVER STATE TO [test] if all databases can be queried via DMV. 4. Here is one features of asp.net 4.0 that I am going to explain. As a web developer we all know about session. Without the use of session any database driven web application is incomplete. As we all know unlike windows form web forms are state less so when user interacts with web application we need to maintain state amongst web pages and we are using session for maintaining state between web pages for each users. ASP.NET is also provide same kind of session state functionalities. ASP.Net Session state identify request coming for same user and same browser for specific session time out interval and its preserves values in session for that specific time intervals and that’s help us in maintaining state amongst web pages for a specific user. ASP.NET Session state allows us to store session in three way 1. IncProc 2. Session State Service 3. SQL Server. In SQL Server mode it will store session in SQL Server tables instead of storing it in Server Memory. ASP.NET 4.0 provides a new property called Compression Enabled that means when we store values in serialized form in SQL Server with GZip Compression and that results in better performance.   While it was very quiet here on my blog during the last months, this was not at all true for the rest of my professional life. The simple story is that I was too busy to find the time for authoring blog posts (and you might see from my previous ones that they’re usually not of the ‘Hey, I’m currently reading X’ or ‘I’m currently thinking about Y’ kind…). Anyway. Among the things I did during the last months were setting up a TFS environment (2010) and introducing a development team to the MSTest framework (aka. Visual Studio Unit Testing), some additional tools (e.g. Moq, Moles, White),  how this is supported in Visual Studio, and how it integrates into the broader context of the then new TFS environment. After wiping out all the stuff which was directly related to my former customer and reviewing/extending the Speaker notes, I thought I share this presentation (via Slideshare) with the rest of the world. • Someone using my website for Email and significant increase in spam

  Let me give you the background in context so that you know the full story. Last summer my web guy (he put my website together) got in a fight with someone who attempted to register on my site using the name of my company as part of his user name. I was not aware of this at all until it had escalated dramatically. I don't know why my web guy was so unprofessional in his response to this person. I really don't know him - met him via SCORE and have never met in person. He is a vendor. Anyway, this guy who got into it with my web guy then threatened to do all he could to hurt my business and said he was internet savvy, etc. So, nothing seemed to happen for a while then not long ago this guy attempted to send me a friend request on Linkedin. After his behavior I declined it. Shortly afterwards I began seeing a dramatic increase in spammers posting comments on the blog part of my site. Just lately I have been receiving Emails from a variety of names but all with the "@___" that I own - for my business. I had additional security added so now they have to register in order to comment on my blog and I am seeing a lot of registration attempts from the same (and similar) IP addresses with bogus names and weird Email addresses being blocked. So, it is not creating more work as it is all automatic. The Email addresses are of more concern. Is there a way to identify a person through an IP address or a place to report the behavior or the Email usage? This guy lives in South Carolina so he is not overseas. Any help/advice you can provide will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Joy

• SQL SERVER – Difference between COUNT(DISTINCT) vs COUNT(ALL)

  This blog post is written in response to the T-SQL Tuesday hosted by Jes Schultz Borland. Earlier today, I was presenting a 45-minute session at the Community College about “The Beginning SQL Server Database”. One of the students asked me the following question. What is the difference between COUNT(DISTINCT) vs COUNT(ALL)? I found this question from the student very interesting. He seems to have read the documentation (Book Online) and was then asking me this question. I always carry laptop which has SQL Server installed. I quickly opened it and ran the following script. After looking at the result, I think it was clear to everybody. Here is the script: SELECT COUNT([Title]) Value FROM [AdventureWorks].[Person].[Contact] GO SELECT COUNT(ALL [Title]) ALLValue FROM [AdventureWorks].[Person].[Contact] GO SELECT COUNT(DISTINCT [Title]) DistinctValue FROM [AdventureWorks].[Person].[Contact] GO The above script will give me the following results. You can clearly notice from the result set that COUNT (ALL ColumnName) is the same as COUNT(ColumnName). The reality is that the “ALL” is actually  the default option and it needs not to be specified. The ALL keyword includes all the non-NULL values. I know this is very simple and may be it does not change how we work; however looking at the whole angle, I really enjoyed the question. • Embedding BIP just got easier!

  To make up for yesterday's documentation faux pas, when I referenced Kan's blog as a source for the debug feature over Leslie's fine official documentation that had come out some time before Kan's blog. Apologies again Leslie! I noticed another new feature that I was unaware of in the New Features guide for 10.1.3.4.1. The ability to remove the BI Publisher header from the user interface so you can get this: instead of this. Useful? If you wanted to host BIP inside another application such as a portal or custom app, you can make the BIP UI app look much more integrated. By default you still get our 'blue' look and feel' but I have documented else where how you can change that. For instance, now you can have BIP hosted inside a BIEE instance and provide access to all the reports a user might wish to run with very little effort rather than picking and choosing what to bubble up to the dashboard. • Learning Objective-C for iPad/iPhone/iPod Development

  I am learning how to write apps for the iPad/iPhone/iPod!  Why, well several reasons.  One reason, I have 5 devices in my house on the platform.  I had an iPad and iPhone, Michelle has an iPhone, and each of the kids have iPod Touches.  They are excellent devices for life management, entertainment, and learning.  I am amazed at how well the kids pick up on it and how much it effects the way they learn.  My two year old knows how to use it better than any other device we own and she is learning new words and letters so quickly. Because of this saturation at home, it would be fun to write some apps my family could use.  Some games to bring the hobby of development back into my life.  Second reason is we want to have a Geekswithblogs app for the iPhone and iPad.  We are not sure if it is purely informational (blog posts and tweets) or if members want to be able to publish from the app.  Creating a blog editor would be tough stuff, but could be just the right challenge. There are so many more reasons, but the last one that really makes me excited is that it is a new domain of development where I get excited when I think about writing apps.  That excitement level where I want to see if there are User Groups and if we are just watching TV, to break out the MBP and start working on it.  That excitement level where I could really read a development book cover to cover and not just use as a reference.  I really do like this feeling. Who knows how long this will last and I am definitely not leaving .NET.  Microsoft software will always be my main focus, but for the time, my hobby is changing and I am getting excited about development again.   Technorati Tags: Apple,iPad Development,Objective-C,New Frontiers Image: Courtesy of Apple
