• Code refactoring with Visual Studio 2010 Part-4

  I have been writing few post with code refactoring features in Visual Studio 2010. This post also will be part of series and this post will be last of the series. In this post I am going explain two features 1) Encapsulate Field and 2) Extract Interface. Let’s explore both features in details. Encapsulate Field: This is a nice code refactoring feature provides by Visual Studio 2010. With help of this feature we can create properties from the existing private field of the class. Let’s take a simple example of Customer Class. In that I there are two private field called firstName and lastName. Below is the code for the class. public class Customer { private string firstName; private string lastName; public string Address { get; set; } public string City { get; set; } } Now lets encapsulate first field firstName with Encapsulate feature. So first select that field and goto refactor menu in Visual Studio 2010 and click on Encapsulate Field. Once you click that a dialog box will appear like following. Now once you click OK a preview dialog box will open as we have selected preview reference changes. I think its a good options to check that option to preview code that is being changed by IDE itself. Dialog will look like following. Once you click apply it create a new property called FirstName. Same way I have done for the lastName and now my customer class code look like following. public class Customer { private string firstName; public string FirstName { get { return firstName; } set { firstName = value; } } private string lastName; public string LastName { get { return lastName; } set { lastName = value; } } public string Address { get; set; } public string City { get; set; } } So you can see that its very easy to create properties with existing fields and you don’t have to change anything there in code it will change all the stuff itself. Extract Interface: When you are writing software prototype and You don’t know the future implementation of that then its a good practice to use interface there. I am going to explain here that How we can extract interface from the existing code without writing a single line of code with the help of code refactoring feature of Visual Studio 2010. For that I have create a Simple Repository class called CustomerRepository with three methods like following. public class CustomerRespository { public void Add() { // Some code to add customer } public void Update() { //some code to update customer } public void Delete() { //some code delete customer } } In above class there are three method Add,Update and Delete where we are going to implement some code for each one. Now I want to create a interface which I can use for my other entities in project. So let’s create a interface from the above class with the help of Visual Studio 2010. So first select class and goto refactor menu and click Extract Interface. It will open up dialog box like following. Here I have selected all the method for interface and Once I click OK then it will create a new file called ICustomerRespository where it has created a interface. Just like following. Here is a code for that interface. using System; namespace CodeRefractoring { interface ICustomerRespository { void Add(); void Delete(); void Update(); } } Now let's see the code for the our class. It will also changed like following to implement the interface. public class CustomerRespository : ICustomerRespository { public void Add() { // Some code to add customer } public void Update() { //some code to update customer } public void Delete() { //some code delete customer } } Isn't that great we have created a interface and implemented it without writing a single line of code. • Are web application usability issues equal to website usability issues?

  I've been reading two books about web usability issues and tests (Rocket Surgery Made Easy¹ and Prioritizing Web Usability²) and they claim some strategies and typical problems about website usability and how to lead them. However, I want to do a web application, and I think I lost track of what I am trying to solve. These two books claim to work with raw websites (e-commerce, business sites, even intranet), but I'm not sure if everything about web usability is applicable to web application usability. They sure talk about always having available (and usable) the Back button, to focus on short information rather than big amounts of text, etc., but they could be inaccurate in deeper problems that may be easier (or just skippable) in regular websites. Has anybody some experience in this field and could tell me if both web applications and websites share their usability issues? Thanks in advance Edit: Quoting Wikipedia, a website is a collection of related web pages containing images, videos or other digital assets, and a web application is an application that is accessed over a network such as the Internet or an intranet. To sum up, both shows/lets you search/produce information but websites are "simple" in interaction and keep the classics of websites (one-click actions) and the other one is closer to desktop applications in the meaning of their uses and ways of interaction (double click, modal windows, asynchronous calls [to keep you in the same "environment" instead of reloading it] etc.). I don't know if this clarifies the difference. Edit 2: Quoting @Victor and myself, a website is anything running in your browser, but a web application is somewhat running in your browser that could be running in your desktop, with similar behaviors and features. Gmail is a web application that could replace Outlook. GDocs could replace Office. Grooveshark could replace your music player, etc.

• Color indication in Visual Studio 2012

  This post will be a part of Visual Studio 2012 series. Before some days Microsoft has released the release candidate version of Visual Studio 2012. Today I got installed Visual Studio 2012 and once I loaded the visual studio 2012 first things I noticed that there is purple color blank strip is there at bottom. After doing some R and D on internet I have found that it is used for the different indication. The purple color indicates that there is no project loaded now. Once you open the project this line will be of blue color like below. Once you run and F5 and debug it, the color will change to orange like below . Isn’t that great? It will take about 3 months to finish, according to a roadmap I make (based on current development stage) and about a month after that for bug fixing and testing. So I have to tell them a price.   I remember stumbling across an amusing graphic a year or so ago which demonstrated the tiers of web development. The back-end was shown as a tiny box, but the front end was shown as a huge box crammed with lots of front-end technologies like AJAX, DHTML. This is all a vague recollection. Does anyone know where on the Intraweb this graphic might be? It was probably on a programming cartoon site, but I only view XKCD on a regular basis, and I couldn't find it on there. Although tagged as fun, my request does have a productive edge to it - it would be quite useful in driving home to my colleagues how UI top-heavy web application development has become.

• 'Situations gone wrong' for web apps...

  Hi all I know there's some decent material floating around relating to more specific areas, but wanted to get some opinions from people who have had bad experiences in the past. I have a project where I can have a say on the design of a B2C web app, which has some external API interfaces. UX is crucial as is speed. Not sure what technology will be used at this stage. In designing this application, I want to make sure obvious features are not left out (i.e. ones that make maintenance/development easier). So can you guys tell me about 'situations gone wrong' that could have been avoided had more consideration taken place? Am looking to gather feedback in general, so don't worry if your example is industry/technology specific - so long as it pertains to web. Thanks for reading, I look forward to your responses!

  Navigation flows in the Web UI is a common requirement. In 11.1.1.7 we do not have out of the box support for navigational flows but this is surely on our road-map.Until then this simple approach might meet some of the requirements. In this sample we use a trigger control and Web Form rules show navigation flow for Customer, Orders and Line Items. Start by creating  a new Web Form and adding 3 tabs as Customer,Order,Line Items.Add the elements to each tab. • How to approach iOS web clip app "download"?

  We have our main site at: http://mysite.com which we don't want to alter. Then we have our web clip app at: http://mysite.com/app/ If someone visits the app URL in normal Safari then the Safari UI will still display. But if the user adds the app URL to their home screen, and then they tap that icon they will launch the app URL without the Safari UI as intended. My question is how do you go about getting the user to use the web clip app from their home screen when they start from mysite.com? What I'm thinking is that we have a link on mysite.com that points to mysite.com/app/. Then when they click that /app/ link they'll go to the app but it won't be in "app mode". Can I detect that it's not in app mode and display a message like "add this page to your home screen to use the app"? And then when they do visit in app mode obviously just let the app run.

  How do you test the web applications (both server side and client side code)? The testing method has to work irrespective of the framework used (struts, spring web mvc) etc. I am using Java for the server side code, Javascript and HTML for the client side code. This is the sample test case of what I am talking about: 1. When you click on a link, the pop up opens. 2. Change some value in the pop up (say a drop down value) and it gets saved in the DB. 3.   In my previous post I wrote about why you should pay attention when using enum value Zero. After reading that post you are probably thinking like Benjamin Roux: Why don’t you start the enum values at 0x1? Well I could, but doing that I lose the ability to have Sync and Async mutually exclusive by design. Take a look at the following enum types: [Flags] public enum OperationMode1 { Async = 0x1, Sync = 0x2, Parent = 0x4 } [Flags] public enum OperationMode2 { Async = 0x0, Sync = 0x1, Parent = 0x2 } To achieve mutually exclusion between Sync and Async values using OperationMode1 you would have to operate both values: protected void CheckMainOperarionMode(OperationMode1 mode) { switch (mode) { case (OperationMode1.Async | OperationMode1.Sync | OperationMode1.Parent): case (OperationMode1.Async | OperationMode1.Sync): throw new InvalidOperationException("Cannot be Sync and Async simultaneous"); break; case (OperationMode1.Async | OperationMode1.Parent): case (OperationMode1.Async): break; case (OperationMode1.Sync | OperationMode1.Parent): case (OperationMode1.Sync): break; default: throw new InvalidOperationException("No default mode specified"); } } but this is a by design constraint in OperationMode2. Why? Simply because 0x0 is the neutral element for the bitwise OR operation. Knowing this singularity, replacing and simplifying the previous method, you get: protected void CheckMainOperarionMode(OperationMode2 mode) { switch (mode) { case (OperationMode2.Sync | OperationMode2.Parent): case (OperationMode2.Sync): break; case (OperationMode2.Parent): default: break; } This means that: if both Sync and Async values are specified Sync value always win (Zero is the neutral element for bitwise OR operation) if no Sync value specified, the Async method is used. Here is the final method implementation: protected void CheckMainOperarionMode(OperationMode2 mode) { if (mode & OperationMode2.Sync == OperationMode2.Sync) { } else { } } All content above prove that Async value (0x0) is useless from the arithmetic perspective, but, without it we lose readability. The following IF statements are logically equals but the first is definitely more readable: if (OperationMode2.Async | OperationMode2.Parent) { } if (OperationMode2.Parent) { } Here’s another example where you can see the benefits of 0x0 value, the default value can be used explicitly. <my:Control runat="server" Mode="Async,Parent"> <my:Control runat="server" Mode="Parent">

• Need to setup and access web disk for a hosting account

  I am on linux(ubuntu 12.04) and have purchased a hosting space. In the cpanel, I selected nautilus for accessing web-disk and I was given a note: Note: In order for the Web Disk to work, you will need to allow port 2078 (SSL) or 2077 (non-SSL) on your computer's firewall. As, I am unable to connect to this, i.e. on entering the given url in Nautilus address bar, it says 'Connection closed'. So, I believe the above this quoted is not correctly configured. Please let me know, how to configure this? How to allow the given port access?
