• Sempron 145 core unlocking

  Call me a cheapskate looking for performance, but I have a Sempron 145 processor that has been unlocked to an Athlon II X2 4450e with a GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3 motherboard, but only one of the two processor cores can be used at a time. If both of the cores are enabled in the BIOS the kernel will hang during boot, If I reboot the system and disable the second core (but not re-lock the processor), it will take me to the grub and then start normally. Is there a way to enable both cores and boot without kernel hangs?

  I tried to install from CD. The computer wouldn't boot from the CD, so I clicked on the 'boot helper', and rebooted the machine. And the first thing I see is do I want to open Windows or Ubuntu (without it asking me whether I wanted to install it alongside Windows or replace it), and when I click on Ubuntu, after a very long time, I finally get a login screen. But I don't have a login, because I never set one up. Help!

• Graphic crash after Ubuntu 12.04 minor update

  My problem came after doing a normal packages update in 12.04 and then reboot to never been able to boot normally, it appear the "The system is running in low-graphics mode" window and then I tried to fix the problem reinstalling the gmd. Now I'm reinstalling the whole system, from the USB boot it went everything as usual before that update. I just want to never have to reinstall Ubuntu in this way again. Any thoughts?   I have an old computer that can't handle a boot stick install, so i have to create an actual, old fashioned boot CD. However, the image size for Ubuntu 12.04 is 732MB, which is too large for a CD, which can hold only 700MB. The maintainers of Ubuntu 12.04 say the image size will never go over 700MB, and indeed, the download size seemed to be 689MB. Brasero says it won't burn the CD because the file is too big, what's going on?

  i finally put up a Dual Boot with Ubuntu and Lion on my old MacBookPro 5.1 As reported in many cases the discrete graphics card is turned on all the time consuming a lot of power and thus heating up the laptop. Since the discrete graphics card does not support the nvidia optimus technology, the corresponding packge nvidia-prime does not help in this case. Therefore my question is, how to manually disable the discrete graphics card Nvdidia 9600GT ? Preferably a 'switch-on-the-run' version, but a 'set-on-boot' would be totally fine!

• Installing NVIDIA driver causes black screen (750M)

  I have a dual boot set up on a Lenovo Ideapad Y500 with NVIDIA 750M and I am having problems installing the graphics cards. I have made sure to install both linux-headers-generic and linux-source, and yet have ended up with a black screen whether I install nvidia-current, nvidia-current-updates, nvidia-experimental-310, and nvidia-319. I even tried enabling proprietary drivers through settings and still ended up with a black screen on boot. Is my graphics card just not supported yet, or is there a way to fix this?

  just built my first computer, trying to install Ubuntu, when I tell my BIOS to startup from disk drive it says "Please insert boot media into boot device" so I insert my burned disc and my computer thinks for a few seconds and then prompts me again. Any idea why? Tried multiple times, burned two discs, I have even confirmed that my build works by swapping hard drives with the computer I'm currently using to post this, so I'm kinda out of answers right now and hoping you guys can help me find something I've done wrong, thanks in advance for any help.

  Mac OSX - Snow leopard is host OS and Ubuntu-10.1 and windows xp are guest OS. I recently updated vittualbox to 4.1.10 Ubuntu did not boot immediately, it did an entire system scan and took about 2 hrs to boot. Now it boots regularly but it does not find wireless internet connection, even connecting cable does not help. However internet works great in window xp.   I'm currently trying to set up an unattended installation of Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) through preseeding. But whenever I try to create a custom partition scheme, the Debian installer (which Ubuntu is using) produces a faulty partition table.   Hello. I had 5.4 machine. Upgraded to 5.5 today via yum upgrade. All went fine. Rebooted. Wanted to convert root partition to ext4 (I have three partitions: /boot, / and swap). All of them on software RAID 1 (root is /dev/md2). I did the following for converting yum install e4fsprogs tune2fs -O extents,uninit_bg,dir_index /dev/md2 nano /etc/fstab # I indicated here that my /dev/md2 is of ext4 uname -a mkinitrd -f /boot/initrd-2.6.18-194.3.1.el5.img 2.6.18-194.3.1.el5 Rebooted. I expected fsck to start automatically as said on some site. But it did not. Threw some error (don't remember exactly which). Ok, I booted linux rescue and executed fsck: fsck -t ext4 -fy /dev/md2 Partition went fine. But still when I boot main system, it says in log: "ext3-fs:" then something about not being able to mount ext3 partition due to unknown extended attributed (200). I booted linux rescue again. It loads fine and correctly determines all my machine partitions both ext3 (boot) and ext4 (/) under /mnt/sysimage just fine. I retried mkinitrd thing again watching it's output and ensured ext4 module is included into the system. I also edited menu.lst grub file to include rootfstype=ext4 kernel parameter. Bad luck. I still have message from ext3-fs about not being able to mount filesystem because of attributes and kernel panic immediately after. I checked /etc/fstab - it's fine and saying that root is of ext4. What did I do wrong? This machine is empty so I can just reformat it with 5.5 and recreate partitions to be originally ext4. But... I just want to know what did I do wrong.

• How to update the hard disk device drivers for a ghosted hard drive image so it can run on different hardware: Ultra ATA > SATA

  I've ghosted a Winxp machine from one laptop with Ultra ATA drive, and would like to set it up on another laptop as a multiboot option on another hard driver with a SATA drive. I can install the partition fine but if i make it active and try to boot it it blue screens. The blue screen is so fast i cant even read it, other than to make out it's saying "something", im picking probably hard drive as it goes through POST fine. So basically i would like to boot into my Win7 OS, and then somehow manipulate the XP partition to use updated drivers for the new hard drive/laptop so that i can then at least boot into the XP OS on the new machine and update all the other drivers in safe mode or whatever to get it to run. I assume someone is going to tell me to just do a fresh install, but that kinda defeats the purpose of ghosting at this point. There is a significant amount of personalisation, development setup on the XP machine that i would like to just transfer as is. As it stands ive invested minmal time in getting it to run, just a ghost and recovery and then a blue screen boot or two, so its still well worth it to me, time wise to try this way. Thanks.

• OS X can't copy files from Windows Home Server...over wifi.

  I'm a brand spanking new user of OS X, coming from a lifetime of Windows use. I've been setting up my new Macbook Pro and have run into a very unusual problem. Over wifi, I am unable to copy files to or from my Windows Home Server. The problem seems to exist only over wifi, and only to WHS. Here are the details of my setup: 2010 Macbook Pro (Core i7), OS X 10.6.3 Windows Home Server PP3 (virtualized in XenServer 5.5) Windows 7 Ultimate x64 desktop Windows 7 Ultimate x64 in Boot Camp D-Link DIR-655 wireless N router Here is what I've done to narrow down the problem: Files copy fine from WHS to OS X when using gigabit ethernet Files copy fine from desktop to OS X when using gigabit ethernet Files fail to copy from WHS to OS X when using wifi (error -51) Files copy fine from desktop to OS X when using wifi Files copy fine from WHS to Boot Camp when using wifi Files copy fine from desktop to Boot Camp when using wifi From what I can tell, it seems to be some sort of issue between OS X and WHS, but I can't for the life of me see what would be different between shares on WHS and my desktop. They are both connected using smb://ADDRESS (I've tried both by IP and name). I can browse the shares on the WHS, but copying to OS X fails. I originally found the issue while installing VS2010 off an ISO from WHS, mounted to a Windows 7 VM using VMware Fusion. During the installation the VM was unusable - even the clock got behind the host be about 8 minutes. Once I plugged in the ethernet and disabled the wifi things picked up and finished quickly. The Fusion 3.1 RC is the only I think of that I installed that may have messed with the wifi driver. I've also tried resetting the wifi router, and have changed it from being G & N to N-only. Under Boot Camp I get similar speeds as my wife's N laptop. Any ideas? Thanks!

• Windows XP Installation problems

  I'm having trouble installing Windows XP on a computer... My friend gave me her old computer, it was riddled with viruses and ran extremely slow. I did my best to clean it out, and after a bit I discovered it had a boot sector virus. So I downloaded the Ultimate Boot CD (installed it on a flash drive), and ran Darik's nuke and boot to completely wipe the hard drive. I then tried to reinstall Windows XP from a USB drive... It doesn't work. The computer just stalls and never boots. The computers dvd drive doesn't work, so I borrowed a spare drive that another friend had, and tried to run a Windows XP cd. For a bit I got the stop 7B error, but now it just stalls like the USB drive does. Since then I've booted back into the Ultimate Boot CD, and ran partition magic. Repartitioned the Hard Drive, and copied the files on the Windows cd to the hard drive. I was wondering if there is any way I can make it run the setup.exe off the hard drive. I have the UBCD at my disposal, but have yet to come up with a way to do it. Any help is greatly appreciated.

• USB Mouse and Keyboard not working in Linux 4 Tegra

  I am a new person in Tegra Linux development. I have Tamontem NG Evaluation board with Tegra 3 Chip. I installed L4T sample file system from NVIDIA tegra Resources (https://developer.nvidia.com/linux-tegra) and installed the file system as described in the documentation provided in NVIDIA site. Already these was an SD card with L4T running. i dont want to change the boot loader. So I copied the boot.scr.uimg to root (/) folder and uImage to boot(/boot/) and it starts booting from the existing SD card. After that while booting, some errors occurred in some Bluetooth devices (there is no bluetooth device in the board). So I disabled Bluetooth by giving the following command sudo mv /etc/init/bluetooth.conf /etc/init/bluetooth.conf.noexec Now the problem is that mouse and keyboard are not working. So i cannot login. Even though i installed desktop, the mouse and keyboard are not working. But mouse and keyboard are enumerating. lsusb command is showing the USB mouse and keyboard. The installed file system is Ubuntu 13.04. Linux Kernel version is 3.1 What to do. Please help.Thanks in Advance.

• Windows xp recovery console without Ntfs.sys? (0x00000024 BSOD)

  I have two physical disks in a computer, for simlicity lets call them C and D. C: got Windows XP and D: got some data. The problem is that whenever i have D: connected i can't boot windows. I get some BSOD called 0x00000024/NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM. Same thing if i boot up windows with D: disconnected and then connect it once windows has loaded. The KB article about this problem says that i have to run chkdsk but i can't get to somewhere where i can run this because i get a BSOD whenever the disk is connected! Even the recovery-console BSODs if D: is connected. The final option in the KB is to boot the computer on Windows 2000 Setup disks where you edit some file to manually disable the ntfs.sys driver and then run chkdsk. The problem is that i don't have any floppy drive. Is there any way to boot the built in recovery console with ntfs.sys disabled or to burn the floppy version to a cd after you've extracted and modified it on the harddrive? • How to repair Mac OS X without reinstalling?

  I have an Intel PC. I have installed iDeneb Mac OS X in my PC. It's running fine. After that I thought about installing Snow Leopard for running the iPad SDK. So I bought a retail Snow Leopard and booted it with Rebel EFI boot loader. When I was installing Snow Leopard, at the end of installation, setup gives an error. So I restarted my PC and boot with Rebel and I saw that the Mac was there so I booted that into safe mode and Mac OS X runs. After that I installed iPad SDK. But when I try to create an application, Xcode is not responsive. It hangs when I choose new project, give it a name and save it on disk. After just as I gave name and choose save it hangs. Is there any way I can repair my Mac OS X without reinstalling? I have also been unable to boot into normal mode and also without Rebel CD. So I want to boot without Rebel CD and also want to run iPad SDK.
