• connecting to freenx server : configuration error

  I am not able to pin point what is missing. I have configured freenx-server (useradd, passwd etc). However, server drops the connection after authentication. Please note my server is ubuntu 10.04 and client recent version.   Scary day for me last Thursday. I had gone up to Brisbane, and was due to speak at the Queensland SQL User Group on Thursday night. Unfortunately, disaster struck about an hour beforehand. Nothing to do with the recent floods (although we were meeting in a different location because of them). It was actually down to the fact that I’d been fiddling with my machine to get Virtual Server running on Windows 7, and SQL had finally picked up a setting from then. I could run Management Studio, but it couldn’t connect at all. No error, it just seemed to hang. One of the things you have to do to get Virtual Server installed is to tweak the Group Policy settings. I’d used gpupdate /force to get Windows to pick up the new setting, which allowed me to get Virtual Server running properly, but at the time, SQL was still using the previous settings. Finally when in Brisbane, my machine picked up the new settings, and caused me pain. Dan Benediktson describes the situation. If the SQL client picks up the wrong value out of the GetOverlappedResult API (which is required for various changes in Windows 7 behaviour), then Virtual Server can be installed, but SQL Server won’t allow connections. Yay. Luckily, it’s easy enough to change back using the Group Policy editor (gpedit.msc). Then restarting the machine (again!, as gpupdate /force didn’t cut it either, because SQL had already picked up the value), and finally I could reconnect. On Thursday I simply borrowed another machine for my talk. Today, one of my guys had seen and remembered Dan’s post. Thanks, both of you.

• mdadm: breaks boot due to "is not ready yet or not present" error

  This is so damn frustrating :-| I've spent like 20 hours on this nice error, and seems like dozens of people over Internet too, and no clear solution yet. I have non-system RAID-5 of 5 disks, and it's fine. But during boot up it says that "/dev/md0 is not ready yet or not present" and asks to press 'S'. Very nice for Ubuntu Server - I have to bring monitor and keyboard to go next. After this system boots and it's all fine. md0 device works, /proc/mdstat is fine. When I do mount -a - it mounts this array without errors and works fine. As a dumb and shameful workaround I added noauto in /etc/fstab, and did mounting in /etc/rc.local - it works fine then. • NVIDIA error "fallen off the bus"

  i have been having a Serious Issue with my LG notebook and its Nvidia Geforce 310M GPU. It usualy (99% of the time) happens when i leave the computer idle for a while, but it has also happened sometimes while i was using the PC. Suddenly, (usualy when computer is idle) the screen goes black, and the pc freezes completely on the black screen. (not even ping responses). The only sollution is to Hard Reset the machine. • Integration error in high velocity

  I've implemented a simple simulation of two planets (simple 2D disks really) in which the only force is gravity and there is also collision detection/response (collisions are completely elastic). I can launch one planet into orbit of the other just fine. The collision detection code though does not work so well. I noticed that when one planet hits the other in a free fall it speeds backward and goes much higher than its original position. Some poking around convinced me that the simplistic Euler integration is causing the error. Consider this case. One object has a mass of 1kg and the other has a mass equal to earth. Say the object is 10 meters above ground. Assume that our dt (delta t) is 1 second. The object goes to the height of 9 meters at the end of the first iteration, 7 at the end of the second, 4 at the end of the third and 0 at the end of the fourth iteration. At this points it hits the ground and bounces back with the speed of 10 meters per second. The problem is with dt=1, on the first iteration it bounces back to a height of 10. It takes several more steps to make the object change its course. So my question is, what integration method can I use which fixes this problem. Should I split dt to smaller pieces when velocity is high? Or should I use another method altogether? What method do you suggest? • Is reference to bug/issue in commit message considered good practice?

  I'm working on a project where we have the source control set up to automatically write notes in the bug tracker. We simply write the bug issue ID in the commit message and the commit message is added as a note to the bug tracker. I can see only a few downsides for this practice. If sometime in the future the source code gets separated from the bug tracking software (or the reported bugs/issues are somehow lost). Or when someone is looking in the history of commits but doesn't have access to our bug tracker. My question is if having a bug/issue reference in the commit message is considered good practice? Are there some other downsides?

• How to intergrate Pidgin and Evolution into the message indicator?

  I upgraded to 12.10, I was using Unity 2d, but as it no longer exists I moved to gnome classic, something in the upgrade seems to have change the message indicator in the "Indicator Applet Complete". How do I integrate Pidgin and Evolution into the message indicator, there is only a button to launch Pidgin, but a new message does not change the colour of the icon or show up in the dropdown part. Also when minimizing Pidgin it minimizes like a normal window instead of minimizing to the applet. There is nothing in the menu for Evolution at all. Thanks in advanced.

• Host grub error after installing Virtualbox - Non Recoverable

  I have been unable to fine a resolution to my problem and I have been suffering from it for a while. I can install Virtualbox and can reboot the machine successfully straight after. Once the system is back up I can run Virtualbox ans start working towards creating a new machine. So, say I am installing an XP machine. 1 time out of 10 it will work successfully first time. If it doesn't work (i.e BSOD), I delete the machine and start again. But when the time comes to finish up and switch off my computer, but it doesn't happen gracefully. As soon as I click shutdown, The machine dies. When the machine is switched back on I get: Error: no such device grub resuce I boot up my Grub Fix Live CD, but the grub reinstaller get stuck on searching for partitions, gparted just get stuck looking for devices and even fdisk -l drops a line and displays nothing and is the same. Stuck. The only way I know how to sort it is by re-installing Ubuntu. Has anyone had this problem, or know how to fix it?

  I am working on Ubuntu 9.10 + LXDE as my current project. I am finding it difficult to install any new packages on this OS. For example, I need to install OpenCv package for qt webcam application, but every time it gives unmet dependencies error.And when i try to install dependencies it again show some more dependencies and so on and forms a circular loops. for example: sudo apt-get install libcv-dev .. .... The following packages have unmet dependencies: libcv-dev: Depends: libhighgui-dev (=1.0.0-6.2ubuntu1) but it is not going to installed. E: Broken packages Then I try to install libhighgui-dev as follow: sudo appt-get install libhighgui-dev .. ... The following packages have unmet dependencies: libhighgui-dev: Depends: libgtk2.0-dev but it is not going to installed E: Broken packages And this goes on never ending. Please suggest me something, as i have googled a lot and did not found any help. It may be , i m missing some primary packages to be installed.But how to find it? • Directory error when trying to create a new user

  I added a second user 'shirley' in Settings - User Accounts, and set a password. The account type is Standard. In 11.04, this worked and I logged in and had a functioning desktop for this user. How is this done in 11.10? When I try to log in as this user I have this error: Nautilus could not create the required folder "/home/shirley/.config/nautilus". Before running Nautilus, please create the following folder, or set permissions such that Nautilus can create it. The only option then is to click OK, this dumps me out to full-screen Nautilus, like this: There is no launcher or visible way to start any programs. Print screen doesn't take a screengrab. The desktop is similar to this question but I get no terminal when I press CTRL+ALT+T. I have to press CTRL+ALT+F2 and restart from the terminal to get out of this. This answer is to install gnome-system-tools. Shouldn't I be able to add a second user with the default install? EDIT: I tried the deluser+adduser suggestion, there was no change after trying it.   I'm building a temperature conversion application in Visual Studio for a C++ course. It's a Windows Forms application and the code that I've written is below. There's other code to of course, but I'm not sure you need it to help me. My problem is, when I run the application if I don't have anything entered into either the txtFahrenheit or txtCelsius2 textboxes I get the following error: "An unhandled exception of type 'System.FormatException' occurred in mscorlib.dll" The application only works right now when a number is entered into both of the textboxes. I was told to try and use this: Double::TryParse() but I'm brand new to C++ and can't figure out how to use it, even after checking the MSDN library.   I upgraded to 12.10, I was using Unity 2d, but as it no longer exists I moved to gnome classic, something in the upgrade seems to have change the message indicator in the "Indicator Applet Complete". How do I integrate Pidgin and Evolution into the message indicator, there is only a button to launch Pidgin, but a new message does not change the colour of the icon or show up in the dropdown part. Also when minimizing Pidgin it minimizes like a normal window instead of minimizing to the applet. There is nothing in the menu for Evolution at all.
