• Copy a harddrive from a failed desktop machine using a second working one. [closed]

  Heres the scenario: I have PC-A, an old PC that runs Windows XP but now refuses to boot due to a failed motherboard (or maybe PSU). This PC has a single 80gb IDE drive. I also have PC-B, running Windows Vista, this is working fine. I want to copy all the data off PC-As HDD onto PC-B. To do this I have taken the HDD out of PC-A and connected it as a slave to PC-B. PC-B now boots and sees the additional drive. However, when I attempt to access/copy user folders (i.e. Documents and Settings/[username]/*) I am told that I cannot access the folders due to user permissions. I am doing this under an adminstrator account on PC-B. So the question is, how can I "backup" the data? Preferably without making any changes to the drive contents. The reason for this is that it is possible that PC-A is failing due to a bad PSU, so I intend to replace it before writing off the machine. However I would feel much happier if I had a backup of the data on the HDD.

• Which Linux distribution for vehicle LCD instrument panel

  I will be designing an instrument panel for a vehicle to display the common gauges that you would find in a car - (speedometer, rpm, fuel level, oil pressure, etc.). We have selected a 7" LCD and are in the process of narrowing down the hardware (This will use an ARM processor). The idea is to read these values off of the CAN Bus and update the UI with those values. This needs to have a fairly quick boot time, 5-10 seconds would be acceptable from the time the ignigtion is turned on to the time the UI is running. I have been doing a lot of research on which linux distribution to use, but I wanted to ask the question here to get the community's suggestions. I have been a .NET programmer for years, so linux is a new world to me. Here is what I have found so far... Tizen is geared for In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) (plus some others). However, this project is not an IVI, and I do not need the phone dialer, navigation, etc. Meego is dead, and Tizen seems to be the replacement Angstrom, Debian... would either of these be useful? I am not tied to a particular programming language or IDE. Any help and direction is appreciated!

• How do I run a stable Windows XP kvm guest on Ubuntu 10.04?

  I have three Windows XP guests running on a recently upgraded 64-bit Ubuntu 10.04 system. Occasionally (on the order of once every few days), one of the guests will become non-responsive and the kvm process on the host which is running that guest will start consuming 100% CPU. It will continue to do so until it is killed. When restarted, it will be fine for a while, and then the issue repeats. • Development on Windows 7; Web server on Linux - How to share Apache web root?

  I've got a LAMP server that I want to use as a local web server. I've got a Windows 7 machine that I want to use as my development machine. The machines will be on the same LAN (or the Windows box will be VPNed into the LAN). My questions is, what is the best way of sharing the web root of the LAMP server so that I can edit the files on the remote Windows 7 machine and how do I go about configuring this on the Linux machine? (Fedora 16) I would like the solution to be as easy to use as possible with preferably no extra steps required to save/edit/upload files from my IDE on my Windows 7 machine. I'm thinking either a Samba or NFS share are the way to go but I'm concerned I'm going to run into issues with permissions and unix/windows file handling. Is one better than ther other for my use case or is there a better alternative solution? I'm currently using Windows 7 Professional which doesn't have NFS support but would upgrade to Ultimate which does have NFS support if it's the best solution.

• Package Manager Console For More Than Managing Packages

  Like most developers, I prefer to not have to pick up the mouse if I don’t have to. I use the Executor launcher for almost everything so it’s extremely rare for me to ever click the “Start” button in Windows. I also use shortcuts keys when I can so I don’t have to pick up the mouse. By now most people know that the Package Manager Console that comes with NuGet is PowerShell embedded inside of Visual Studio. It is based on its PowerConsole predecessor which was the first (that I’m aware of) to embed PowerShell inside of Visual Studio and give access to the Visual Studio automation DTE object. It does this through an inherent $dte variable that is automatically available and ready for use. This variable is also available inside of the NuGet Package Manager console. Adding a new class file to a Visual Studio project is one of those mundane tasks that should be easier. First I have to pick up the mouse. Then I have to right-click where I want it file to go and select “Add –> New Item…” or “Add –> Class…”   If you know the Ctrl+Shift+A shortcut, then you can avoid the mouse for adding a new item but you have to manually assign a shortcut for adding a new class. At this point it pops up a dialog just so I can enter the name of the class I want. Since this is one of the most common tasks developers do, I figure there has to be an easier way and a way that avoids picking up the mouse and popping up dialogs. This is where your embedded PowerShell prompt in Visual Studio comes in. The first thing you should do is to assign a keyboard shortcut so that you can get a PowerShell prompt (i.e., the Package Manager console) quickly without ever picking up the mouse. I assign “Ctrl+P, Ctrl+M” because “P + M” stands for “Package Manager” so it is easy to remember:   At this point I can type this command to add a new class: PM> $dte.ItemOperations.AddNewItem("Code\Class", "Foo.cs") which will result in the class being added: At this point I’ve satisfied my original goal of not having to pick up a mouse and not having the “Add New Item” dialog pop up. However, having to remember that $dte method call is not very user-friendly at all. The best thing to do is to make this a re-usable function that always loads when Visual Studio starts up. There is a $profile variable that you can use to figure out where that location is for your machine: PM> $profile C:\Users\steve.michelotti\Documents\WindowsPowerShell\NuGet_profile.ps1 If the NuGet_profile.ps1 file does not already exist, you can just create it yourself and place it in the directory. Now you can put a function inside like this: 1: function addClass($className) 2: { 3: if ($className.EndsWith(".cs") -eq $false) { 4: $className = $className + ".cs" 5: } 6: 7: $dte.ItemOperations.AddNewItem("Code\Class", $className) 8: } Since it’s in the NuGet_profile.ps1 file, this function will automatically always be available for me after starting Visual Studio. Now I can simply do this: PM> addClass Foo At this point, we have a *very* nice developer experience. All I did to add a new class was: “Ctrl-P, Ctrl-M”, then “addClass Foo”. No mouse, no pop up dialogs, no complex commands to remember. In fact, PowerShell gives you auto-completion as well. If I type “addc” followed by [TAB], then intellisense pops up: You can see my custom function appear in intellisense above. Now I can type the next letter “c” and [TAB] to auto-complete the command. And if that’s still too many key strokes for you, then you can create your own PowerShell custom alias for your function like this: PM> Set-Alias addc addClass PM> addc Foo While all this is very useful, I did run into some issues which prompted me to make even further customization. This command will add the new class file to the current active directory. Depending on your context, this may not be what you want. For example, by convention all view model objects go in the “Models” folder in an MVC project. So if the current document is in the Controllers folder, it will add your class to that folder which is not what you want. You want it to always add it to the “Models” folder if you are adding a new model in an MVC project. For this situation, I added a new function called “addModel” which looks like this: 1: function addModel($className) 2: { 3: if ($className.EndsWith(".cs") -eq $false) { 4: $className = $className + ".cs" 5: } 6: 7: $modelsDir = $dte.ActiveSolutionProjects[0].UniqueName.Replace(".csproj", "") + "\Models" 8: $dte.Windows.Item([EnvDTE.Constants]::vsWindowKindSolutionExplorer).Activate() 9: $dte.ActiveWindow.Object.GetItem($modelsDir).Select([EnvDTE.vsUISelectionType]::vsUISelectionTypeSelect) 10: $dte.ItemOperations.AddNewItem("Code\Class", $className) 11: } First I figure out the path to the Models directory on line #7. Then I activate the Solution Explorer window on line #8. Then I make sure the Models directory is selected so that my context is correct when I add the new class and it will be added to the Models directory as desired. These are just a couple of examples for things you can do with the PowerShell prompt that you have available in the Package Manager console. As developers we spend so much time in Visual Studio, why would you not customize it so that you can work in whatever way you want to work?! The next time you’re not happy about the way Visual Studio makes you do a particular task – automate it! The sky is the limit.

• TCP: Address already in use exception - possible causes for client port? NO PORT EXHAUSTION

  Hello, stupid problem. I get those from a client connecting to a server. Sadly, the setup is complicated making debugging complex - and we run out of options. The environment: *Client/Server system, both running on the same machine. The client is actually a service doing some database manipulation at specific times. * The cnonection comes from C# going through OleDb to an EasySoft JDBC driver to a custom written JDBC server that then hosts logic in C++. Yeah, compelx - but the third party supplier decided to expose the extension mechanisms for their server through a JDBC interface. Not a lot can be done here ;) The Symptom: At (ir)regular intervals we get a "Address already in use: connect" told from the JDBC driver. They seem to come from one particular service we run. Now, I did read all the stuff about port exhaustion. This is why we have a little tool running now that counts ports and their states every minute. Last time this happened, we had an astonishing 370 ports in use, with the count rising to about 900 AFTER the error. We aleady patched the registry (it is a windows machine) to allow more than the 5000 client ports standard, but even then, we are far far from that limit to start with. Which is why I am asking here. Ayneone an ide what ELSE could cause this? It is a Windows 2003 Server machine, 64 bit. The only other thing I can see that may cause it (but this functionality is supposedly disabled) is Symantec Endpoint Protection that is installed on the server - and being capable of actinc as a firewall, it could possibly intercept network traffic. I dont want to open a can of worms by pointing to Symantec prematurely (if pointing to Symantec can ever be seen as such). So, anyone an idea what else may be the cause? Thanks

• Converting An Older VMWare Image to ESXi

  I have just installed VMWare ESXi and imported one physical machine without issue and one virtual machine, from an older version of VMWare Server on a Linux system, to it without issue. But I have another machine (Windows XP), virtual running on the VMWare Server, that I can't get the Converter to work with. Converter runs, says everything is fine, but when I go to the ESXi VSphere manager and hit the button to power up that vm, the console stays black with a blinking cursor and the processor for that VM spikes 100% and stays there. An event log item in VSphere warns something about activation issues with Windows. Has anyone else run into this issue before? Is it something with the disk controller? I copied the folder with the VM directly to the storage drive on ESXi hoping to create a new machine and point the data store to that folder or at least that drive image; nope, something about not using an IDE controller (must be something with the older format). In short, converter is doing something that particular machine doesn't like, and I can't find a way to simply open that hard disk image or convert it unless someone else has seen this. I try attaching a bootable CD image for disk repair to see if it can check the hard drive but I can't seem to get the console to boot from it...either too slow on the button or it just isn't able to easily boot from a virtual drive image (.iso). Any suggestions or help?

One of the early guiding principles of Oracle RightNow was an 8-point strategy to providing good customer experiences. The Knowledge Authoring tool provides gap analysis, WYSIWIG editing (and includes HTML rich content for non-developers), multi-level categorisation, permission based publishing and Web self-service publishing. Oracle RightNow Customer Portal, is a complete web application framework that enables businesses to control their own end-user page branding experience, which in turn will allow customers to self-serve. The Contact Centre Experience Designer builds a combination of workspaces, agent scripting and guided assistances into a Desktop Workflow. These present an agent with the tools they need, at the time they need them, providing even the newest and least experienced advisors with consistently accurate and efficient information, whilst guiding them through the complexities of internal business processes. Oracle RightNow provides access points for customers to feedback about specific knowledge articles or about the support site in general. The system will generate ‘incidents’ based on the scoring of the comments submitted. This makes it easy to view and respond to customer feedback. It is vital, more now than ever, not to under-estimate the power of the social web – Facebook, Twitter, YouTube – they have the ability to cause untold amounts of damage to businesses with a single post – witness musician Dave Carroll and his protest song on YouTube, posted in response to poor customer services from an American airline. The first day saw 150,000 views and is currently at 12,011,375. The Times reported that within 4 days of the post, the airline’s stock price fell by 10 percent, which represented a cost to shareholders of $180 million dollars. It is a universally acknowledged fact, that when customers are unhappy, they will not come back, and, generally speaking, it only takes one bad experience to lose a customer. The idea that customer loyalty can be regained by using social media channels was the subject of a 2011 Survey commissioned by RightNow and conducted by Harris Interactive. The survey discovered that 68% of customers who posted a negative review about a holiday on a social networking site received a response from the business. It further found that 33% subsequently posted a positive review and 34% removed the original negative review. Cloud Monitor provides the perfect mechanism for seeing what is being said about a business on public Facebook pages, Twitter or YouTube posts; it allows agents to respond proactively – either by creating an Oracle RightNow incident or by using the same channel as the original post. This leaves step 8 – Measuring and Improving: How does a business know whether it’s doing the right thing? How does it know if its customers are happy? How does it know if its staff are being productive? How does it know if its staff are being effective? Cue Oracle RightNow Analytics – fully integrated across the entire platform – Service, Marketing and Sales – there are in excess of 800 standard reports. If this were not enough, a large proportion of the database has been made available via the administration console, allowing users without any prior database experience to write their own reports, format them and schedule them for e-mail delivery to a distribution list. It handles the complexities of table joins, and allows for the manipulation of data with ease.   Android allows developers to replace its keyboard with their own keyboard apps. This has led to experimentation and great new features, like the gesture-typing feature that’s made its way into Android’s official keyboard after proving itself in third-party keyboards. This sort of customization isn’t possible on Apple’s iOS or even Microsoft’s modern Windows environments. Installing a third-party keyboard is easy — install it from Google Play, launch it like another app, and it will explain how to enable it. Google Keyboard Google Keyboard is Android’s official keyboard, as seen on Google’s Nexus devices. However, there’s a good chance your Android smartphone or tablet comes with a keyboard designed by its manufacturer instead. You can install the Google Keyboard from Google Play, even if your device doesn’t come with it. This keyboard offers a wide variety of features, including a built-in gesture-typing feature, as popularized by Swype. It also offers prediction, including full next-word prediction based on your previous word, and includes voice recognition that works offline on modern versions of Android. Google’s keyboard may not offer the most accurate swiping feature or the best autocorrection, but it’s a great keyboard that feels like it belongs in Android. SwiftKey SwiftKey costs $4, although you can try it free for one month. In spite of its price, many people who rarely buy apps have been sold on SwiftKey. It offers amazing auto-correction and word-prediction features. Just mash away on your touch-screen keyboard, typing as fast as possible, and SwiftKey will notice your mistakes and type what you actually meant to type. SwiftKey also now has built-in support for gesture-typing via SwiftKey Flow, so you get a lot of flexibility. At $4, SwiftKey may seem a bit pricey, but give the month-long trial a try. A great keyboard makes all the typing you do everywhere on your phone better. SwiftKey is an amazing keyboard if you tap-to-type rather than swipe-to-type. Swype While other keyboards have copied Swype’s swipe-to-type feature, none have completely matched its accuracy. Swype has been designing a gesture-typing keyboard for longer than anyone else and its gesture feature still seems more accurate than its competitors’ gesture support. If you use gesture-typing all the time, you’ll probably want to use Swype. Swype can now be installed directly from Google Play without the old, tedious process of registering a beta account and sideloading the Swype app. Swype offers a month-long free trial and the full version is available for $1 afterwards. Minuum Minuum is a crowdfunded keyboard that is currently still in beta and only supports English. We include it here because it’s so interesting — it’s a great example of the kind of creativity and experimentation that happens when you allow developers to experiment with their own forms of keyboard. Minuum uses a tiny, minimum keyboard that frees up your screen space, so your touch-screen keyboard doesn’t hog your device’s screen. Rather than displaying a full keyboard on your screen, Minuum displays a single row of letters.  Each letter is small and may be difficult to hit, but that doesn’t matter — Minuum’s smart autocorrection algorithms interpret what you intended to type rather than typing the exact letters you press. Just swipe to the right to type a space and accept Minuum’s suggestion. At $4 for a beta version with no trial, Minuum may seem a bit pricy. But it’s a great example of the flexibility Android allows. If there’s a problem with this keyboard, it’s that it’s a bit late — in an age of 5″ smartphones with 1080p screens, full-size keyboards no longer feel as cramped. MessagEase MessagEase is another example of a new take on text input. Thankfully, this keyboard is available for free. MessagEase presents all letters in a nine-button grid. To type a common letter, you’d tap the button. To type an uncommon letter, you’d tap the button, hold down, and swipe in the appropriate direction. This gives you large buttons that can work well as touch targets, especially when typing with one hand. Like any other unique twist on a traditional keyboard, you’d have to give it a few minutes to get used to where the letters are and the new way it works. After giving it some practice, you may find this is a faster way to type on a touch-screen — especially with one hand, as the targets are so large. Google Play is full of replacement keyboards for Android phones and tablets. Keyboards are just another type of app that you can swap in. • Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio causing system freeze

  I'm experiencing very slow response from MSSMS and it causes other applications to slow down. Specially Skype crashes after few seconds from opening MSSMS, showing an error called "Disk I/O Error". I'm regularly using few applications (Sublime text, MS Word, Firefox, Outlook, Skype and one or two other apps) simultaneously. The system works fine when MSSMS is not in use! But as soon as MSSMS is opened, all the apps start to freeze (MSSMS also responds very slow). This problem has been there for about a week now (I haven't installed any apps or haven't made any changes to the system during that time). -- System Specifications -- Processor: Core i3 (3.1 GHz) RAM: 4 GB OS: Windows 7 Professional (64 bit) Free space in C drive: ~ 100 GB MS SQL Server 2008 R2 Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio version - 10.50.1600.1 I've tried to find a reason for this but there are no helpful information in the web! There are some solutions suggested (in forums and in Skype Support pages) for the Skypes' "Disk I/O Error", all of which I tried but does not solve the problem. Has anyone faced the same senario? (and hopefully) knows a solution? Systems Log I don't have much knowledge in interpreting the System Log, but I think the Critical and Warnings are not helpful. But there are lots of Error logs which might be useful. In source Kernal-General there are few similar errors saying "An I/O operation initiated by the Registry failed unrecoverably.The Registry could not flush hive (file): <some file>" In source atapi also there are few similar errors -- "The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Ide\IdePort0." (all errors has occurred in 'IdePort0') In Application Error, there are several errors logged, and following is the latest one. Both the Errors which has occurred today is similar (to this one). As it is from Ssms.exe, I guess this is relevant to the cause of problem. But as I said above I can't understand what it means!

• Memory modules not running at rated speeds.

  Hi all, I'm having some odd memory issues with my build. Here are my specs right now: QDI Superb 4 motherboard Intel Pentium 4 Northwood 2.4GHz (512KB L2, 533MHz FSB) 3x 256MB PC2100 DDR266 RAM 16MB NVIDIA TNT2 Pro AGP Seagate 80GB IDE HDD Generic USB 2.0 PCI Generic Modem PCI Bestec 250W PSU To be even more specific, here are the current brands and models of each module: Kingston KVR266X64C25/256 Samsung PC2100U-25331-Z SMART SM5643285D4N0CHM0H Supposedly, they are all PC2100 266MHz modules with a latency of 2.5. Looking in Speccy, the Kingston module is somehow running at a speed of PC2300 ~284MHz. I've never overclocked RAM at all as I don't know how to. However, when I first started the computer, I had the SMART module in place first and then reset the BIOS settings, including the integrated overclocking options. However, this still doesn't explain why the Kingston module runs at a higher speed than the SMART and Samsung module. Why is it like this? On a side note, where could I find the motherboard manual for the QDI Superb 4? Thanks in advance.

• AGP 4x slot running at 2x

  Hi all, Here are the specs of the machine related to this question: AMD Athlon XP 2400+ @ 2 GHz / 2x 512MB PC3200 DDR RAM / 3D Fuzion 128MB GeForce 6200 AGP / WD 160GB IDE HDD / FIC AM37 (mobo) / Codegen 350W PSU / Windows XP Pro SP3 So, for some odd reason, the GeForce 6200 that is in the AGP 4x slot is not running at 4x, but 2x. The card itself supports AGP 4x and even 8x. When I enter the BIOS, the options for the AGP slot only allow 2x as the max. Before, the max option for the AGP slot in the BIOS was 4x. (I do get the 4x option after I reset CMOS, but it does not stick after a restart.) I don't exactly know what the problem could be, but a few weeks ago, this machine's hard drive was reformatted and got a fresh install of XP. Also, I did install Rivatuner, but I never overclocked it at all. (I uninstalled it after thinking that it had done something.) Otherwise, I cannot figure out the cause of the problem. Does anybody have an idea why this is happening? (Would I have to do another reformat?) Thanks in advance. PS: the other options for the AGP slot are aperture size (which I tried changing, but it did nothing) and FastWrite (enabled by default).

• Recovering drive via boot to Win7 setup command prompt

  I am trying to recover data from two old IDE drives. Drive1 has been successful, but something is wrong with Drive2. It does not appear as a drive letter. Due to limited legacy hardware, the only way i can see these drives is to boot using windows 7 setup and goto the command prompt. Without going further as to why, my question is how i can access the data in this command prompt. I discovered DISKPART command and while a first time user, it looked like something that can fix my problem. Here are the results of my diskpart commands. At the bottom is a image of the commands taken with a camera. The Drive2 is present because when using the diskpart command, I can see it. How can I copy the information using a robocopy script if the drive letter is not available? how can I assign a drive letter? Is there any repair command I need to execute? When i execute DISKPART, the following is what i see. DISKPART> LIST DISK Disk### Status Size Free Disk 5 Online 37 GB 2048 KB So then I select disk 5. DISKPART> SELECT DISK 5 "Disk 5 is now the selected disk" When I list partition DISKPART> LIST PARTITION Partition ### Type Size Partition 1 Primary 101 MB Partition 2 Primary 37 GB So I select partition 2 "Partition 2 is now the selected partition." I then try to assign a drive letter DISKPART> ASSIGN LETTER=G "There is no volume specified." "Please select a volume and try again." When i list volume the drive is not present. DISKPART> LIST VOLUME Result of the above commands

• how could application installations/configurations be easier in linux?

  although you can do anything in linux it tends to require a lot of tweaking in config files and reading a lot of manuals/tutorials before you can have it running in your way. i know that it gets a lot easier by time, and the apt-get installations with ubuntu/debian is heading the right way. but how can linux be more userfriendly for us in the future? i thought that if more is automated like an IDE environment, eg. typing svn will give us all the commands and description about each command when you move between commands with your keyboard. that would be great. but that's just one example. another is the navigation in the terminal between folders. now you have to type a lot just to jump from/to different folders. would be great with some more automatization here too. i know that these extra features will slow down the server, but its 2010 now, and these features are not that heavy for the cpu, but makes it more userfriendly and encourage maintainance of a server, not frighten u off. what do you think about this? should/could we have more user friendly linux environment in servers, something that has annoyed you a lot? a lot of things are done in the unix way, but maybe we should reinvent the wheel in some areas, cause apparently, its so...repeatingly today and difficult to do easy tasks. it should be easier i think..

• .tex file remains in use by process when batch file is triggered by .Rnw Sweave processing.

  This is a pretty specialized question. I'm using the Eclipse IDE in a Windows XP environment with the StatET plug-in so I can write R code as an R/Sweave document. This produces a .tex file that is then post processed by pdflatex.exe. When I create the file as normal everything works great (except maybe my file named russfnc2.Rnw seems to result in russfnc.pdf even though pdflatex.exe on the console window correctly says that the output is being writen to russfnc2.pdf). The big problem is when I trigger a batch file from within my Rnw code. My goal here is to spawn a side process that waits for the PDF to be made and uploads it to the server. So the Rnw contains: if(file.exists("rsp.finalize.bat")) {system("rsp.finalize.bat",wait=FALSE,invisible=FALSE)} The batch file calls Rterm.exe to run a script: setwd("C:/theprojectdirectory") while(!file.exists("russfnc.pdf")) { Sys.sleep(1) } Sys.sleep(60) At the end of that script, I use a shell call to launch psftp.exe and upload the files. All of this works fine, when I use my Eclipse profile to trigger Sweave... that is unless I have that batch file at the end of the .Rnw. When it is located there, I get the error message pdflatex.exe: Permission denied: c:\thepath\thetexfile.tex. After that, the .tex file (as far as XP is concerned) is in use by another process and I have to reboot in order to delete it (and, of course, the pdf is not made). If I manually trigger the batch file after pdflatex.exe has done its things, everything works fine. How can I make this work correctly using the tools I'm familiar with vis., R and Dos-style batch files? I'm not sure if this is a SuperUser question or a StackOverflow question, so I'm starting here.

After taking preliminary backups, I used MalwareBytes to detect and clean the infection. I might've even gotten it all. In the process, I've discovered (a) the system drive is showing signs of impending failure, and (b) the owner has been using the system's old crusty IE-6 instead of the up-to-date Firefox I've provided for him. So naturally, thinking I had a relatively stable system, I tried to hit the Windows Update site to install IE-8, in case further training doesn't stick. The update site told me it needed to update the installer, and I started that process. Soon after, wuauclt.exe started crashing, reporting addresses in module esent.dll. There's a Microsoft KB (910437) on a problem with that DLL, so I downloaded the hotfix and installed. The crashing did not stop. I attempted to install SP3 from the offline installer, but that didn't fix the issue either. The system is reporting a few hard drive / IDE controller errors, but they don't correlate to the crashes, so they aren't the direct cause. I've also attempted to rollback to the time between the infection removal and the first crashes, but that doesn't help. Question The hotfix I tried to install dealt with problem in transaction logs of the Extensible Storage Engine (ESE) database. I suspect this issue is similar, but that the database itself (whatever the ESE database is) is corrupted. Is there a way to clean or clear this database so that system operation returns to normal? Can someone enlighten me as to what the ESE database actually is, and where it resides? Can I just locate some files and delete them to bring this under control?

• Computer always freezing after random periods of time. No errors listed.

  Hi, all. Here are my specs beforehand: AMD Athlon XP 2400+ @ 2.00 GHz, 160GB IDE HDD, 128MB GeForce 6200 AGP, 2 x 512MB PC3200 DDR RAM, CoolMax 350W PSU, 1 x CD-RW Drive, 1 x DVD-ROM Drive, FIC AM37 Mobo, Windows XP Pro SP3 My desktop freezes after random periods of time but there are no errors listed in the Event Viewer after a forced shutdown and restart. A couple months ago, I found that when it froze, the floppy was being accessed at the same time. So, I disconnected the floppy (since I never used it anyways) from the power supply and motherboard. Everything was working fine and the computer never froze. This past Christmas break, I left for a Conference and when I got home, the computer kept freezing again. So, this time, I just disconnected the DVD reader (from mobo and power) and started it up. Still, it froze almost right away. Then I found some older sticks of RAM (2 x 256MB PC2100 DDR) and swapped them in. Everything worked fine again after that. I even swapped the 2 x 512MB PC3200 DDR RAM back in and everything worked okay. Then it started freezing again, and I tried all possible RAM combos, still freezing within 5-10 minutes of startup. One thing I've realized is that the floppy drive is still listed in My Computer and I uninstalled it from my Device Manager already. There were no software errors, and I uninstalled the most recent software, with no effect. Still, I have no idea what is wrong because everything ran fine before that. Any suggestions? EDIT: Still have yet to buy some blank CD media to use Memtest86+. However, would a lack of virtual memory cause the computer to freeze? EDIT2: So after a long time, I ran Memtest86+ and all is well. Turns out though, after removing my original DVD reader and replacing it with a DVD-ROM drive, there is no freezing whatsoever! Thanks for all your suggestions!

• How do I add a WMware ESXi Host to Microsoft Virtual Machine Manager?

  I am trying to manage virtual machines running on a VMware ESXi host using Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager. I was able to add the ESXi machine using the "Add VMware VirtualCenter server" option, but can't access any of the VMs on the datastore associated with this ESXi server. The datastore of the ESXi box is showing up with the correct name, but it won't let me see any of the VMs that have already been created; I get "There are no virtual machines on this host." Because I couldn't get any of the existing virtual machines to show up, I tried creating some new ones. When using VMM to connect to ESXi and create new VMs, I get the following error messages in the "rating explanation" section: The virtualization software on the selected host does not support virtual hard disks on an IDE bus. and The virtualization software on the host XXXXXX does not support the creation of dynamic virtual hard disk. Any ideas on why I can't manage existing machines and why I can't create new ones? The existing machines were created in vSphere. I should note that the ESXi server and the server running SCVMM are both on the same domain. I should also note that although the ESXi box has been added as a VirtualCetner server, when I try to add it through the "Add Host" option, I get an error message saying "Virtual Machine Manager cannot complete the VirtualCenter action on server EXSi because of the following error: The operation is not supported on the object."

If you need your mother of girlfriend or somebody to edit your text they will know what to do, they will not realize it is a console and will have only a feeling it is something like a notepad. copy, paste, undo works as usual with usual key combinations (Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V, Ctrl-Z). shift and arrows works as usual. They select the text. And when I return to the computer I want to use the text editor for programming. I expect: Syntax highliting auto indenting replacing spaces with tabs keyboard shortcuts for compiling possibility to configure it to use a debugger autocompletions for c#, java, c++ and other languages other things I expect from IDE's. I was working and configuring vim for a few years. But It never fulfilled all of my expectations (but it almost did). I thing I could get vim configured perfectly if I had few more weeks time for configurating it. Unfortunately I cannot afford to be configuring vim forever. Is there other alternative? Hopefully some editor I once set up and it will works forever? What do you use? I often hear people are using emacs. Is it worth learning?

  Every tutorial on Linux-based partitioning schemes (or, just partitioning in general) will tell you that a PC can have either 4 primary partitions, or 3 primaries and 1 extended. They will all also tell you that Linux (in my case, Ubuntu) can be installed on either. It's also come to my attention that it is not too atypical for FHS directories, such as usr/, tmp/, etc/, home/ or var/ to be mounted separately on other partitions. Several questions I am unable to find the answers to, purely for my own edification: (1) By "PC", are we really talking about common PC disk types, like IDE or SATA? I guess I'm wondering why PC uses are limited to 4 primaries or 3 primaries + 1 extended (2) I'm choking on some basic OS concepts: it is said that a partition can be mounted by a file system or an OS. So I assume this means I can somehow instruct Ubuntu to mount to 1 partition, and then any part of, say, ReiserFS, to be mounted to another partition? How? (3)(a) What about creating swap partitions? Is there too much of a good thing with swap partitioning? If I have 4GB RAM over 320GB disk, what should my swap partition size be, and why? (3)(b) Are swap files the only way to create swap partitions? Wouldn't a Linux partitioning utility allow me to define a partition as being for virtual memory only? (4) Why are partitions limited to being "mounted" by just OSes and file systems? Why couldn't I write a program to take up its own, say, 512 MB partition, and then have it invoked or uses by an OS installed on another partition? Thanks for shedding any light here... not critical that I know this stuff, but it's got me thinking incessantly. And when I think incessantly, I...can't......sleep....

• Hard Drive Compatibility with Motherboard

  Here are the current specs to put things in context: ECS P4VXASD2+ V5.0 Intel Pentium 4 Northwood 2.8 GHz 2x 512MB PC2100 DDR266 SDRAM Maxtor DiamondMax 10 250 GB PATA (IDE) HDD Gigabyte 52x CD-ROM NVIDIA TNT2 Pro 16 MB OKIA 300W ATX PSU USB bracket Modem PCI Before, I actually had a 300 GB hard drive installed. However, I read the FAQ for the motherboard and discovered that a maximum of 250 GB hard drive was supported. So I ended up finding the one listed above and put that in. However, upon booting up, I reset the BIOS to defaults and auto-detected all the drives installed. The 250 GB came up as something like 251.0 GB. I didn't think much about it until I tried to boot up a Windows XP installation disc. It booted up successfully and run for about a minute before the computer randomly rebooted. I've made sure that all the jumpers and settings are correct and everything has been installed correctly. I've tried running it without the addons and one stick of RAM but still the same thing. What else could be causing this problem?
