• Using Haml & Sass with Eclipse

  Are there any plugins for eclipse that add syntax highlighting and other niceties for editing Haml and Sass? Google searches only seem to point to a dead project on lucky-dip.net. Note: it's Sass I'm most interested in. A solution for using just Sass (or something similar to it like less) in Eclipse would suit my needs. Also, I'm developing for Google App Engine (Java), using the App Engine plugin for Eclipse. So switching to another IDE isn't an option. Update: So I've got syntax highlighting now using Pascal's answer and I've installed Ruby and Compass to compile sass into css. However I'm aware that the syntax of sass will be changing with 2.4 so I'd still like to get the Haml and Sass Editors that come with Aptana to work. When I tried to use them they threw an exception and wouldn't display the files. I'd be interested to know if that's because I misconfigured Aptana or is an actual bug in the editors. I'd also be very interested in any way of compiling Sass that integrated with Ecplise so that I didn't have to run something separate from it. (or a way of putting Sass/Compass in the Ecplise build process.)

• Developing a rich internet application

  Hello, I have been a desktop developer for a few years mostly doing object oriented stuff. I am trying to branch out into web development, and as a hobby project trying to put a web application together. I have been reading quite alot of information, but I still can't seem to decide on the path to take and would really like some advice. Basically, I want to build something like this: http://mon.itor.us/ I have found this as well: http://www.trilancer.com/jpolite/#t1 But so far it is of little use as I am trying to grasp Javascript. I have been using visual studio for that, is that a good IDE for this tye of thing or should I try expression blend? Jpolite seems to do everything with javascript, which seems kind of cool, but I if I want to make a chart inside a widget that connects to a database, do I need something more? Is this where ASP.NET comes in? I am familiar with .NET, but if I use ASP.NET for my website, do I have to host it on IIS and windows server as opposed to Apache since mono is still being ironed out? Because that would cost more, so would PHP be a better choice? Also, for charting these guys as well as google seem to use flex: http://www.google.com/finance I have found this: http://www.reynoldsftw.com/2009/03/javascript-chart-alternatives/ Would that be sufficient to implement something like google fiance purely in javascript or is there a good reason they use flex? That means I've got two Entities: User PrivateMessage The User model shouldn't be edited, so I'm trying to set up an unidirectional relationship: @Entity (name = "User") @Table (name = "user") public class User implements Serializable { @Id String username; String password; // something like this ... } The PrivateMessage Model addresses multiple receivers and has exactly one sender. I'm confused about this. Everytime I try to set a 'mappedBy' attribute, my IDE marks it as an error. It seems to be a problem that the User-entity isn't aware of the private message which maps it. What am I doing wrong here? I've solved some situation similar to this one, but none of those solutions will work here. Thanks in advance!

• Project with multiple binaries in Eclipse CDT

  I think it is quite normal to have more than one binary in a project. However, with Eclipse CDT I don't know how to set up the IDE to get things done. I know I can create several projects - one per binary. And I know I can set the dependencies per project. However, I cannot regard them as one project in Eclipse. If I'd like to share the code with a version control system (like svn), each developer has to import the projects separately. What I miss is something like the Solution (sln file) in Visual Studio. Should I create a single project and create the make files by myself? I haven't tried it out yet, but there is this 'project set' which can be ex- and imported. Is this the solution? Can this be put into version control? My goal it to put everything under version control, not only subprojects. I cannot imagine that CDT makes only sense for single-binary applications. How can I work properly?

• Monotouch or Titanium for rapid application development on IPhone?

  As a .Net developer I always dreamed for the possibility to develop with my existing skills (c#) applications for the Iphone. Both programs require a Mac and the Iphone Sdk installed. Appcelerator Titanium was the first app I tried and it is based on exposing some Iphone native api to javascript so that they can be called using that language. Monotouch starts at $399 for beeing able to deploy on the Iphone and not on the Iphone simulator while Titanium is free. Monotouch (Monodevelop) has an Ide that is currently missing in Titanium (but you can use any editor like Textmate, Aptana...) I think both program generate at the end a native precompiled app (also if I am not sure about the size of the final app on the Iphone as I think the .Net framework calls are prelilnked at compilation time in Monotouch). I am also not sure about the full coverage of all the Iphone api and features. Titanium has also the advantage to enable Android app development but as a c# developer I still find Monotouch experience more like the Visual Studio one. Witch one would you choose and what are your experiences on Monotouch and Titanium?

• Selenium onChange not working

  Hi, I have tried a number of things to try and get Selenium to pick up an 'onchange' event from a drop down menu, none of which has worked. The offending HTML is: <select onchange="doOpperation(this.options[this.selectedIndex]); this.selectedIndex = 0;" name="opps_ondemand" id="opps_ondemand"> <option value="none" id="ondemand">Mark as...</option> <option cmd="blah1" value="add">Something</option> <option cmd="blah2" value="remove">None</option> </select> I have read that Selenium IDE doesn't record some on* events, and so it would be wise to use fireEvent(): $this->click("opps_ondemand"); $this->select("opps_ondemand", "label=Mark as..."); $this->click("//option[@value='add']"); sleep(3); $this->fireEvent("//select[@id='opps_ondemand']", "change"); However, this does not work (with or without the fireEvent). I have also tried using $this->fireEvent("locator", "click"); instead of $this->click("locator"); but this did nothing. Selenium does not complain about these locators not existing so I am assuming it can see the select/option elements fine. The problem seems to be the onChange event. Does anyone know how to resolve this? Thanks.

  Although I have seen dozens of forum questions relating to "Could not load type", none of the advice in them seemed to apply to my situation. I wrote a new web application using aspx.net VB 2005. It is tiny, with just 2 pages, 1 of which has no code-behind. It runs aok in the IDE but when I installed it on my pc (and also when installed on the production server), and tried to run it this error came up: Parser Error Description: An error occurred during the parsing of a resource required to service this request. • Opencv application crashes at runtime with error code 0x0000142

  I have openCV and minGW installed with codeblock IDE following the instructions found here http://kevinhughes.ca/tutorials/opencv-install-on-windows-with-codeblocks-and-mingw/ i tried the simple image loading program in the article and the build process went fine. but when i tried running the output program, it crashes with the error message "the application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142). Click OK to close the application." I used Dependency Walker to see if the program failed to load dll module and here's the output screen of Dependency Walker https://www.dropbox.com/s/f9iaftdt8atjwpl/Screenshot%202013-11-05%2022.21.45.png i am not used to DW but as i can see in its output screen, some openCV dll failed to load and the loaded Windows DLL were 64 bit instead of 32 bit (as minGW is 32 bit). I can't figure out why as i already configure the Path environment variable for the bin directory of openCV and the app still can not load the dll modules. And i think that Windows will automatically load the proper 32 bit DLLs when a 32 bit app is run but this situation the app still failed to load. Anyone has ideas?

• Replacing/Extending Visual Studio's Generate Stub in Visual Studio 2010

  When we write the name of a method that doesn't exist, Visual Studio 2010 asks us if we'd like to generate a method stub with that name. What I'd like to know if is it possible to replace that same code stub generating command with one made by myself. I never did any kind of extensibility programming for Visual Studio so I have a couple of questions: How hard is it? Is it something I can learn in a couple of nights, or is it something that'll make me "lose" a lot of time? It seems to me that there isn't a lot of support for that kind of programming, as generally people are not that interested in developing solutions that extend the Visual Studio IDE. I searched on SO and it doesn't appear to have many threads about extending Visual Studio. I don't know how the generate method stub thing works in Visual Studio, but I just wanted to turn it into something a bit more flexible and useful. Has anyone dealt with these kind of things before, that can give me a pointer to where to start? I know of MS VSX site but that has a lot of resources and can be overwhelming for someone new to the subject as I am. What technology will I need to use? T4? Maybe I'll need to know a lot about the code, like Visual Studio does, so I can know other method's type arguments, names, etc. Is that what T4 is for? Thanks

• Generating equals / hashcode / toString using annotation

  I believe I read somewhere people generating equals / hashcode / toString methods during compile time (using APT) by identifying which fields should be part of the hash / equality test. I couldn't find anything like that on the web (I might have dreamed it ?) ... That could be done like that : public class Person { @Id @GeneratedValue private Integer id; @Identity private String firstName, lastName; @Identity private Date dateOfBirth; //... } For an entity (so we want to exlude some fields, like the id). Or like a scala case class i.e a value object : @ValueObject public class Color { private int red, green, blue; } Not only the file becomes more readable and easier to write, but it also helps ensuring that all the attributes are part of the equals / hashcode (in case you add another attribute later on, without updating the methods accordingly). I heard APT isn't very well supported in IDE but I wouldn't see that as a major issue. After all, tests are mainly run by continuous integration servers. Any idea if this has been done already and if not why ? Thanks

• Do ruby on rails programmers refactor?

  I'm a Java programmer who started programming Ruby on Rails one year ago. I like the language, rails itself and the principles behind them. But something that bothers me is that Ruby programmers don't seem to refactor. I noticed that there is a big lack of tools for refactoring in Ruby / Rails. Some IDE's, like Aptana and RubyMine seem to offer some very basic refactoring, but nothing really big compared to Eclipse's Java refactorings. Then there is another fact: most railers (even the pros) prefer some lightweight editors, like VIM or TextMate, instead of IDEs. Well, with these tools you just get zero refactoring (only regex with find/replace). This leaves me this impression that rails programmers don't refactor. It might be just a false impression, of course, but I would like to hear the opinion of people who work professionally with ruby on rails. Do you refactor? If you do, how do you do it,with which tools? If not, why not?

  I have a Visual Studio 2008 Solution where the main output exe is a VB.Net Winforms exe which has several VB.Net and C# dll's linked from the same solution. The whole solution is under version control with subversion. Now I want to automagically update by generated files with the current svn revision number.   hi all, I am a newbie in working on VS IDE and have not much experience in how the different libraries and files are linked in it. I have to build a OpenCV project which was made in VS2005 by one of my colleagues into VS2008. The project is for blob detection. Following is what he has to say in readme : Steps to use the library (using MSVC++ sp 5): 1 - open the project of the library and build it 2 - in the project where the library should be used, add: 2.1 In "Project/Settings/C++/Preprocessor/Additional Include directories" add the directory where the blob library is stored 2.2 In "Project/Settings/Link/Input/Additional library path" add the directory where the blob library is stored and in "Object/Library modules" add the cvblobslib.lib file 3- Include the file "BlobResult.h" where you want to use blob variables. 4- To see an example on using the blob library, see the file example.txt inside the zip file. NOTE: Verify that in the project where the cvblobslib.lib is used, the MFC Runtime Libraries are not mixed: Check in "Project-Settings-C/C++-Code Generation-Use run-time library" of your project and set it to Debug Multithreaded DLL (debug version ) or to Multithreaded DLL ( release version ). 2 Check in "Project-Settings-General" how it uses the MFC. • Where to put external archives to configure running in Eclipse?

  As a Java/Eclipse noob coming from a Visual Studio .NET background, I'm trying to understand how to set up my run/debug environment in the Eclipse IDE so I can start stepping through code. I have built my application with separate src and bin hierarchies for each library project, and each project has its own jar. For example, in a Windows environment, I have something like: c:\myapp\myapp_main\src\com\mycorp\myapp\main ...and a parallel "bin" tree like this: c:\myapp\myapp_main\bin\com\mycorp\myapp\main Other supporting projects are, similarly: **c:\myapp\myapp_util\src\com\mycorp\myapp\uti**l (and a parallel "bin" tree.) ... etc. So, I end up with, e.g., myapp_util.jar in the ...\myapp_util\bin... path and then add that as an external archive to my myapp_main project. I also use utilities like gluegen-rt.jar, which I add ad external dependencies to the projects requiring them. I have been able to run outside of the Eclipse environment, by copying all my project jars, gluegen-rt DLL, etc., into a "lib" subfolder of some directory and executing something like: java -Djava.library.path=lib -DfullScreen=false -cp lib/gluegen-rt.jar;lib/myapp_main.jar;lib/myapp_util.jar; com.mycorp.myapp.Main When I first pressed F11 to debug, however, I got a message about something like /com/sun/../glugen... not being found by the class loader. So, to debug, or even just run, in Ecplipse, I tried setting up my VM arguments in the Galileo Debug - (Run/Debug) Configurations to be the command line above, beginning at "-Djava.libary.path...". I've put a lib subdirectory - just like the above with all jars and the native gluegen DLL - in various places, such as beneath the folder that my main jar is built in and as a subfolder of my Ecplipse starting workspace folder, but now Eclipse can't find the main class: java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: com.mycorp.myapp.Main Although the Classpath says that it is using the "default classpath", whatever that is. Bottom line, how do I assemble the constituent files of a multi-project application so that I can run or debug in Ecplipse?

• Producing 64-bit builds on Windows with free software

  Hi, I have a C++ project that I've been developing in Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Express Edition. It has come to the point that I'd like to port to 64-bit and continue development. What is the best way to do this using free software? My thoughts so far: The Express Edition of MSVC doesn't come with 64-bit compilers, so I can install the Windows SDK to get these. I could then port my project files to nmake, and use the IDE just as a tool to debug and invoke my nmake scripts.. The downside to this is that nmake looks very poor. The example towards the end of this tutorial suggests that nmake cannot figure out source file dependences itself, and I don't know of anything equivelant to gcc -M that I could use. Another option might be to use vcbuild from the Windows SDK to produce 64-bit builds from my existing vcproj files. Preliminary investigations show that this doesn't really work, as my project files don't have the 64-bit configurations present. (Perhaps I could fudge this by adding the 64-bit configurations to the vcproj files in a text editor.) A final option might be to give up on MSVC, and port my project to the MinGW/MSYS toolchain.

This question refers to plugin development for the IntelliJ IDEA IDE, specifically targeting java development: Is there any API to get the list of .class files for given source file? I'm trying to write a plugin that creates a binary patch jar based on a changelist. I've managed to get the changelist and, from it, a list of source files (VirtualFile). Now I'm trying to get the compiled class files for these source files (I don't mind preforming a "make" or relying on the previous compile output). I've played a bit with ProjectFileIndex but could only find the classes root. I'd hate to do a "dumb" path-based search because inner classes (and inner anonymous classes) would make it difficult to get correctly. Is there such an API? Or am I doomed to parse the paths?   Let me preface this by saying I'm fairly new to Unit Testing, Mocks, Stubs, Etc... I've installed Delphi-Mock-Wizard. When I select a unit and "Generate Mock", a new unit is created but it's very basic and not anything what I understand Mocks to be. unit Unit1; (** WARNING - AUTO-GENERATED MOCK! Change this unit if you want to, but be aware that any changes you make will be lost if you regenerate the mock object (for instance, if the interface changes). My advice is to create a descendent class of your auto-generated mock - in a different unit - and override things there. That way you get to keep them. Also, the auto-generate code is not yet smart enough to generate stubs for inherited interfaces. In that case, change your mock declaration to inherit from a mock implementation that implements the missing interface. This, unfortunately, is a violation of the directive above. I'm working on it. You may also need to manually change the unit name, above. Another thing I am working on. **) interface uses PascalMock, TestInterfaces; type IThingy = interface; implementation end. Looking at the source there seems to be quite a bit commented out. I'm wondering, has anyone gotten this to work? My IDE is D2010. Thanks.

• What is best practice (and implications) for packaging projects into JAR's?

  What is considered best practice deciding how to define the set of JAR's for a project (for example a Swing GUI)? There are many possible groupings: JAR per layer (presentation, business, data) JAR per (significant?) GUI panel. For significant system, this results in a large number of JAR's, but the JAR's are (should be) more re-usable - fine-grained granularity JAR per "project" (in the sense of an IDE project); "common.jar", "resources.jar", "gui.jar", etc I am an experienced developer; I know the mechanics of creating JAR's, I'm just looking for wisdom on best-practice. Personally, I like the idea of a JAR per component (e.g. a panel), as I am mad-keen on encapsulation, and the holy-grail of re-use accross projects. I am concerned, however, that on a practical, performance level, the JVM would struggle class loading over dozens, maybe hundreds of small JAR's. Each JAR would contain; the GUI panel code, necessary resources (i.e. not centralised) so each panel can stand alone. Does anyone have wisdom to share?
