• lowest latency, least overhead app server?

  I'm designing an application which will have a network interface for feeding out large numbers of very small metadata requests. The application code itself is very fast, basically looking up data cached in memory and sending it to the client. What's the absolute lowest latency I can get for a network application server running on a linux box? This will be an internal app running on gigE with no authentication. Any language/framework considered, with a preference for C, C++, or Python. Likewise for protocol, although HTTP would be nice.

• Imagemagick - File Naming

• PHP: why uniqid returned value is only 13 digits long

  uniqid() function returns a 13 digits long hexadecimal number. According to the spec in php.net site, the function uses microtime to generate the unique value. But microtime returns numbers in string format as the following one: "0.70352700 12689396875" which are basically the microseconds and the seconds elapsed since 1970. This is a 9+11 digits decimal number. Converting a 20 decimal number into hex would result in a 16 digits hexadecimal NOT a 13 digits one. I also thought to take out the "0." part that seem to never change, and the last two digits of the microsec part that seem to remain always "00". Doing this the decimal number would be only 9+11-3 digits long, but still a decimal number of 17 digits when converted into hex would result in 14 digits hexadecimal number NOT 13. You probably think I'm crazy in asking such a thing, but I'm concerned about using uniqid, unique values are important to be unique, a duplicated value could screw up an entire application.

  I have a calendar table with data from year 2000 to 2012 (2012 wasn't intentional!). I just realize that I don't have the week number of month (e.g In January 1,2,3,4 February 1,2,3,4) How do I go about calculating the week numbers in a month to fill this table?   If a specific release date is not available (as I suspect it is not), can you provide resources for tracking how close it is to the desired feature set that allows release. I'm not necessarily asking for a percentage gauge, or X of Y features completed list. A list of bugs marked in whichever section of the perl RT instance that's tracking Rakudo bugs would meet my criteria, even more so if the list is dynamic (I.e. it's a list of bugs tagged in some manner, not a static list of ticket numbers). If there are only a few planned features left to be finished/tested before it's considered ready for final testing, listing those would also be sufficient.

  Hi, I launch Blackberry ESS in standalone mode. However I don't have Outlook Express on my computer. Instead I have Outlook 2007 on my computer. I set up an email account in Outlook 2007 which uses 'localhost' as its pop3/smtp server. The port numbers I used are the same as those in http://www.blackberryforums.com/developer-forum/5590-sending-receiving-email-device-simulator.html. However I got the following exception. 'UnknownHostException:pop3.server'. I am wondering if Outlook 2007 works with ESS.

• Working in consulting company

  I working for some numbers of years in an medium size ecomerce company where we developing and maintaining large distributed ecomerce system that is a core of company business. I thinking to switch job and one of the offers is in consulting company, the model of work there is different you suppose to work for couple of months at different clients of this company developing different project, this mode of working is very different for me and I don't sure if I will like it. From the positive side I will get experience in a lot of different projects in very different problem domains and with a lot of different technologies. From the negative side, I will always be an outsider in all this companies, placed in some far away corner I probably will have little emotional connection to projects I suppose to work on. Do you have some personal experience working in both of this types of companies that you could share ?

  How do I set up the MaskFormatter and the JFormattedTextField in order to allow partial matches? For example: I want the user to be able to enter numbers with this mask "## ###### ####", so if the user enters '123456789123' the formatter changes it to '12 345678 9123'.   Hey, So I have a gridview which lists a bunch of jobs. On this gridview I have paging enabled, which works fine. When I hover over the Page Numbers i.e 1,2,3,4,.... the following is displayed javascript_DoPostBack('C100PlaceHolderGrievew','Page$1') Now my problem is as follows. When I click on one of the hyperlinks in this list i go to an edit details page. Once the user clicks on save I redirect the user back to the List page with gridview. What I would like to implement is that the gridview remembers what page they came from i.e Page 2. I know i can Use PageIndex to set this but Im not sure how to send across the value of "page" of the gridview so i can this.

  Hi, I need to evenly select n elements from an array. I guess the best way to explain is by example. say I have: array [0,1,2,3,4] and I need to select 3 numbers.. 0,3,4. of course, if the array length <= n, I just need to return the whole array. I'm pretty sure there's a defined algorithm for this, been trying to search, and I took a look at Introduction to algorithms but couldn't find anything that met my needs (probably overlooked it) The problem I'm having is that I can't figure out a way to scale this up to any array [ p..q ], selecting N evenly elements. note: I can't just select the even elements from the example above.. A couple other examples; array[0,1,2,3,4,5,6], 3 elements ; I need to get 0,3,6 array[0,1,2,3,4,5], 3 elements ; I need to get 0, either 2 or 3, and 5

• BigInteger or not BigInteger?

  In Java, most of the primitive types are signed (one bit is used to represent the +/-), and therefore when I am exceed the limits of this type, I can get many strange things, like negative numbers. In the BigInteger class, I have no limits and there are some helpful functions there but it is pretty depressing to convert your beautiful code to work with the BigInteger class, specially when primitive operators don't work there and you must use functions from this class. I was wondering if you had this problem, and if you have any better solution than the BigInteger class? Thank you.

  I was uploading the data to App Engine (not dev server) through loader class and remote api, and I hit the quota in the middle of a CSV file. Based on logs and progress sqllite db, how can I select remaining portion of data to be uploaded? Going through tens of records to determine which was and which was not transfered, is not appealing task, so I look for some way to limit the number of record I need to check.   I'm building a simple interpreter in python and I'm having trouble handling differing numbers of arguments to my functions. My current method is to get a list of the commands/arguments as follows. args = str(raw_input('>> ')).split() com = args.pop(0) Then to execute com, I check to see if it is in my dictionary of command- code mappings and if it is I call the function I have stored there. For a command with no arguments, this would look like: commands[com]() However, if a command had multiple arguments, I would want this: commands[com](args[0],args[1]) Is there some trick where I could pass some (or all) of the elements of my arg list to the function that I'm trying to call? Or is there a better way of implementing this without having to use python's cmd class?

• problem plotting on logscale in matplotlib in python

  I am trying to plot the following numbers on a log scale as a scatter plot in matplotlib. Both the quantities on the x and y axes have very different scales, and one of the variables has a huge dynamic range (nearly 0 to 12 million roughly) while the other is between nearly 0 and 2. I think it might be good to plot both on a log scale. I tried the following, for a subset of the values of the two variables: fig = plt.figure(figsize(8, 8)) ax = fig.add_subplot(1, 1, 1) ax.set_yscale('log') ax.set_xscale('log') plt.scatter([1.341, 0.1034, 0.6076, 1.4278, 0.0374], [0.37, 0.12, 0.22, 0.4, 0.08]) The x-axes appear log scaled but the points do not appear -- only two points appear. Any idea how to fix this? Also, how can I make this log scale appear on a square axes, so that the correlation between the two variables can be interpreted from the scatter plot? thanks.

  Our application lets users call phone numbers. Users would like to be able to block their caller ID. On other platforms, we let the user specify a custom dialing prefix. For instance, on my cell provider it's #31#. I've tried two approaches so far.   Hey guys. I am wondering what the best ways to save enums into a database is. I know there are name() and valueOf() methods to make it into a String back. But are there any other (flexible) options to store these values? Is there a smart way to make them into unique numbers (ordinal() is not safe to use)? Any comments and suggestions would be helpful :) Update: Thanks for all awesome and fast answers! It was as I suspected. However a note to 'toolkit'; That is one way. The problem is that I would have to add the same methods with each enum type i create. Thats a lot of duplicated code and, at the moment, Java does not support any solutions to this (You cannot let enum extend other classes). However, thanks for all answers!

  I'm working on a cross-platform app for Windows and Mac OS X, and I have a problem with two standard C library functions: strtod() (string-to-double conversion) ? sprintf (when used for outputting double-precision floating point numbers) -- their GCC and MSVC versions return different results. I'm looking for a well-tested cross-platform open-source implementation of those functions, or just for a pair of functions that would correctly and consistently convert double to string and back. I've already tried the clib GCC implementation, but the code is too long and too dependent on other source files, so I expect the adaptation to be difficult. What implementations of string-to-double and double-to-string functions would you recommend?

• Compilier optimization of repeated accessor calls C#

  I've found recently that for some types of financial calculations that the following pattern is much easier to follow and test especially in situations where we may need to get numbers from various stages of the computation. public class nonsensical_calculator { ... double _rate; int _term; int _days; double monthlyRate { get { return _rate / 12; }} public double days { get { return (1 - i); }} double ar { get { return (1+ days) /(monthlyRate * days) double bleh { get { return Math.Pow(ar - days, _term) public double raar { get { return bleh * ar/2 * ar / days; }} .... } Obviously this often results in multiple calls to the same accessor within a given formula. I was curious as to whether or not the compiler is smart enough to optimize away these repeated calls with no intervening change in state, or whether this style is causing a decent performance hit. Further reading suggestions are always appreciated

• Access 2007 VBA : Building a listbox with selection choices from another list box

  So there are 8 categories that may be associated to each order, but not necessarily all of them. So i was going to build a list box that allowed the user to double click each of the category they wish to associate when they have an "Order Detail" form opened up (unbound form that has hidden text boxes with all needed ID numbers). I want to have another empty text box right beside it that will allow me to append the selections (up to 8) so the user can see that they have been added. So one list box with the default choices, and when a choice is double clicked, it adds that choice to the second list box to see the tally so to speak. • Using "Show values as" option in Excel 2007 pivot table when source is SSAS cube?

  I have an Excel 2007 pivot table showing "Year" across the top and "Month" down the side. What I am trying to do is represent the values as "% Difference" from the same month of the previous year. (Ex. If Jan-07 is $100,000 and Jan-08 is $120,000, I would like Jan-08 to show '20%'). However, every time I try to do this (using the "Show values as" tab of Value Field Settings) all of my numbers go to '#N/A'. Is there a way to do this using an Analysis Services cube as the data source? When I do this exact same thing using data on a different sheet as the data source for the pivot table, it works fine. Thanks in advance for any insight into this.
