• Good resources for versioning...

  I have a number of Windows servers at work that are used for staging web sites for clients while they are being created. I wanted to start using versioning on them so that when we work with outside vendors on a project, if/when they overwrite my work, I'd like to be able to go back and get the version before. My question is that I think I'm not looking for the correct terms in searching for information, but what kind of resources are there to learn how to install the software for versioning or a site to help me get started. Any and all suggestions would be appreciated. Steph

• Syncronizing indices of function pointer table to table contents

  In the embedded system I'm working on, we are using a table of function pointers to support proprietary Dynamic Libraries. We have a header file that uses named constants (#define) for the function pointer indices. These values are used in calculating the location in the table of the function's address. Example: *(export_table.c)* // Assume each function in the table has an associated declaration typedef void (*Function_Ptr)(void); Function_Ptr Export_Function_Table[] = { 0, Print, Read, Write, Process, }; Here is the header file: *export_table.h* #define ID_PRINT_FUNCTION 1 #define ID_READ_FUNCTION 2 #define ID_WRITE_FUNCTION 3 #define ID_PROCESS_FUNCTION 4 I'm looking for a scheme to define the named constants in terms of their location in the array so that when the order of the functions changes, the constants will also change. (Also, I would like the compiler or preprocessor to calculate the indices to avoid human mistakes like typeo's.)

• Is it possible to create a jdbc connection without a password (using postgresql 'trust')?

  I am using jdbc to connect to a postgresql database in a java application (actually the app is written in Groovy). I have postgresql set up to use the 'trust' authentication method. Is it possible to open a jdbc connection without specifying a password? When I try to use the normal constructor with a blank password, it fails with Exception in thread "Thread-2" org.postgresql.util.PSQLException: FATAL: password authentication failed for user "myuser" Even though, from the command line, this works fine psql -U myuser mydatabase Welcome to psql 8.3.5, the PostgreSQL interactive terminal. • html/php: how to handle absolute url's?

  Is the html tag safe to use in terms of browser support? Or should I generate a root path with PHP which i then add like this <a href="<?=BASE?>somepage.html">somepage</a> which makes up a absolute url. using the base tag like this <base href="<?=BASE?>" /> I am then able to use links like this <a href="somepage.html">somepage</a> now I am fully aware that it would be much easier to just do this without using the base tag: <a href="/somepage.html">somepage</a> but how do I test locally then with a base url of http://localhost/testsite/ ???

• Hyperlink (a href) with a pound sign at the end doesn't do anything in Firefox

  I have a link that is somewhat like this: <a href="------.html#video">Text</a> It works fine in IE but not in Firefox. In Firefox it shows the new URL on the address bar but doesn't update or change anything in terms of content. Somehow the "#" is causing Firefox to ignore updating the page. I tried using Javascript "window.location" and "window.location.href" and all sorts of other things but it still doesn't work. Does anyone have any idea how to fix it? Thanks!

• How to find root cause for "too many connections" error in MySQL/PHP

  I'm running a web service which runs algorithms that serve millions of calls daily and run some background processing as well. Every now and than I see "Too many connections" error in attempts to connect to the MySQL box" for a few seconds. However this is not necessarily attributed to high traffic times or anything I can put my finger on. I want to find the bottleneck causing it. Other than in the specific times this happens the server isn't too loaded in terms of CPU and Memory, and has 2-3 connections (threads) open and everything works smoothly. (I use Zabbix for monitoring) Any creative ideas on how to trace it?

• Does TCP actually define 'TCP server' and 'TCP clients'? [closed]

  In the Wikipedia article, TCP communication is explained using the terms 'client' and 'server'. It also uses the word 'peers'. But TCP actually does not define "TCP clients" and "TCP servers" - In the RFC 675 document (SPECIFICATION OF INTERNET TRANSMISSION CONTROL PROGRAM), the word "client" never appears. The RFC explains that TCP is used to connect processes over ports (sockets), and that 'A pair of sockets form a CONNECTION which can be used to carry data in either direction [i.e. full duplex]. Calling the originating party the "client" seems to be common practice. But this client/server communication model is not always applicable to TCP communication. For example take peer-to-peer networks. Calling all processes which open a socket (and wait for incoming connections from peers) "TCP servers", sounds wrong to me. I would not call my uncle's telephone device a "Telephony server" if I dial his phone number and he picks up.

• Invisible JFrame/JTable how much faster ?

  I have a swing app. with a jframe with lots of internal frames containing large JTable. Those jtables get updated continuously so there is lots of repainting going on. in some circumstances I can simply keep the JFrame invisible. (frame.setVisible(false)) I was wondering if anybody knows if I will gain something in terms of performance (something considerable or not) such as 50% gain or you would only get 2% gain... and maybe some sort of explaination on what to expect. thanks

My understanding is that dictionaries have values for each object. I'm not sure if I'm using the right terms.

• FileInputStream and FileOutputStream to the same file: Is a read() guaranteed to see all write()s that "happened before"?

  I am using a file as a cache for big data. One thread writes to it sequentially, another thread reads it sequentially. Can I be sure that all data that has been written (by write()) in one thread can be read() from another thread, assuming a proper "happens-before" relationship in terms of the Java memory model? Is this behavior documented? EDIT: In my JDK, FileOutputSream does not override flush(), and OutputStream.flush() is empty. That's why I'm wondering... EDIT^2: The streams in question are owned exclusively by a class that I have full control of. Each stream is guaranteed to be accesses by one thread only. My tests show that it works as expected, but I'm still wondering if this is guaranteed and documented.   Hi , I have a .NET windows application which uses the Google Translate API. When trying to translate strings today i got a "Terms of Abuse" exception. To use a google API effectively, it is recommended that you register for a key which should resolve this problem. My translate API does not use a key. However to use a key,the site states that we would need to enter a valid URL of ours - e.g. http://localhost etc. However this one is a windows application. How do i get a valid key?

  I have a SpecialisedRedBlackTree class that is templated. My Month class is not. In my Month class I have a private member which is an instance of SpecialisedRedBlackTree: SpecialisedRedBlackTree<Day> m_windSpeedTree; As you can see it will take the Day class/object (please correct me on any terms I get wrong).   Is there a way in java to create a string with a specified number of a specified character? In my case I would need to create a string with 10 spaces. My current code is: StringBuffer outputBuffer = new StringBuffer(length); for (int i = 0; i < length; i++){ outputBuffer.append(" "); } return outputBuffer.toString(); Is there a better way to accomplish the same thing. I mean it doesn't make very sense for a person to allow an application every time he wants to use the client. • jQuery sanitizing comments and linkifying URLs

  In terms of jQuery (or Javascript), what happens behind the scenes when a person posts a comment on Facebook, Twitter, or a blog? For instance, do they sanitize the text first, and then pattern match URL's into an actual link? Are there other items of concern that the client-side should check in addition to doing some checks on the backend? I have found a few regex's for turning URL's into links, but I'm not sure if there are better solutions. I'm trying to wrap my head around the problem, but I'm having a difficult time knowing where to start. Any guidance you can provide is greatly appreciated!

• MVC way of handling data input

  I have a data input module where I add the information of my product and its sub information like: product basic info product price info product price details price info and price details are related to product and are lists In my web forms approach I would store my main product object on the view state and I would populate it's pricing info and details while doing ajax postbacks. This way I can create a compact module that is very user friendly in terms of defining a lot of data from one place without the need to enter these data from seperate modules. And when I am done I would do one product.save() and that would persist all the data to the respective tables on db. Now I am building similar app on .net mvc framework and pondering on what would be the good way of handling this on mvc. I don't resonate towards storing all this on client side till I click save. And saving to the db after each action makes me remember the days I was coding on asp. Will appreciate your inputs on ways to approach this on mvc framework

Now I am shifting to web programming so I just stuck in understanding the fundamentals of web programming, after googling I came to StackOverflow to learn from all of you great guys. My confusion is about how messages flow between systems in distributed enviornment ? I mean suppose I want to send a message "Hello" to a system connected to LAN or Internet, then what will be the steps taken to send the message. Second thing is suppose my system is "A" and I wana send message to system "B" which is connected via a wire, so how the message flows on wire and how system "B" reads it from the wire ? • How do you preform an EJB lookup with application security?

I'm thinking in terms of WebSphere Application Server 6.1, but if someone knows how to do this for another application server, it may get me in the right direction. • php/mysql append state to city

  Hello, Having a hard time figuring out the best way to do this... I have a search function that takes "search terms" and "search location". In the location input, I have an suggestion feature that brings up "city, state abbreviation" but it seems some users just do not use it(or can't) so they end up entering just a city name... I need to append the state abbreviation after the form is submitted. I have a table with all city and state names in the U.S. but the problem is... there are multiple cities with the same name in different states... I would like to add the state abbreviation for the state that the city is most popular for(does that make sense?). For example, if the user enters "Miami" I would like it to become "Miami, FL" as opposed to "Miami, WV"... Any ideas? Thanks!

• JavaScript eval() with `this`

  If I define a JavaScript code snippet in my HTML, like so: <div id=myElem onMyUpdate="alert('Update called for ' + this.id)">... then what is the most elegant way of evaluating it from within JavaScript with this properly assigned? What I came up with so far is something like this: if (elem.hasAttribute('onMyUpdate')) (function () { eval(elem.getAttribute('onMyUpdate')) }).call(elem); which looks terrible (to me), but works. Any better/more elegant alternatives? MDN says there used to be the second argument to eval() for doing just that but it's deprecated now; MDN then suggests to use operator with() instead, which, if you follow the link provided, turns out to be made deprecated by the latest standard. Dead end, in other words. (As a side note, StackOverflow ignores the word this in search terms and thus it may miss relevant answers - is there a way of telling it not to?) Edit: I forgot to mention: no jQuery please, just vanilla JavaScript

• Using a single PHP script for an entire site

  I had an idea today (that millions of others have probably already had) of putting all the sites script into a single file, instead of having multiple, seperate ones. When submitting a form, there would also be a hidden field called something like 'action' which would represent which function in the file would handle it. I know that things like Code Igniter and CakePHP exist which help seperate/organise the code. Is this a good or bad idea in terms of security, speed and maintenance? Do things like this already exist that i am not aware of?

• Can VBScript determine the most recently modified (or added) file in a particular folder?

  Hello, I have a script (or more accurately WILL have a script) that checks a folder and copies a file from this folder to a different location (will run once per day). The fileName that I'd like to copy from, however, changes based on the date. Basically, instead of setting the "strFilePath" to "C:\somePath\somePath2\myFile.txt" I would like to simply take the most recently modified (or added - does this make a difference in terms of the script??) in the "somePath2" folder and copy it to the destination. Bonus (but not completely necessary) would be to check in the script if the file was modified/added in the last 24 hours and only copy it over in that case. Thanks for your help!

  Is there a commonly accepted terminology for various types for common functors? For instance I found myself naturally using comparitor for comparison functors like this: struct ciLessLibC : public std::binary_function<std::string, std::string, bool> { bool operator()(const std::string &lhs, const std::string &rhs) const { return strcasecmp(lhs.c_str(), rhs.c_str()) < 0 ? 1 : 0; } }; Or using the term deltor for something like this: struct DeleteAddrInfo { void operator()(const addr_map_t::value_type &pr) const { freeaddrinfo(pr.second); } }; If using these kinds of shorthand terms is common, it there some dictionary of them all someplace?

• How do I add items to the Finder context menu in Mac OS X?

  I'm in the process of porting a Windows application to OS X (we wrote it in Java so most of the code is portable), but what I'm currently unsure of is how to add context menu items in the Finder window when the user right clicks on an item (i.e. I wish to add some items to the the menu that has "Open" "Open with" , "Get Info", etc... when the user right clicks). Most of the articles I've found deal specifically with Windows (I've searched for "context menus" and "shell extension", but I believe I may be searching the wrong terms), so I'm curious as to how to go about adding this in Mac or what literature I should be reading.
