  This is the error Dependency Walker gives me on an executable that I am building with VC++ 2005 Express Edition. When trying to run the .exe, I get: This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem. (I am new to the manifest/SxS/etc. way of doing things post VC++ 2003.) EDIT: I am running on the same machine I am building the .exe with. In Event Viewer, I have the unhelpful: Faulting application blah.exe, version 0.0.0.0, faulting module blah.exe, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x004239b0.

  Hi, I have to develop a webpart which will be deployed in the live Environment. I have to login to a remote server(windows 2003) and open up Sql Management Studio and Log on to the another server(SQL server using the IP address). I have to open a specific store procedure and change one of the parameter to true and exceute the stored Procedure. I know it is very easy to accomplish but, where do I start? • Does a .NET 4.0 website load faster for a reason?

  I have been using DotNetBlogEngine for many years, and today my host (JodoHost.com) officially turned on support for .NET 4.0. What I've noticed immediately is that the website loads tremendously faster on the first load, subsequent loads are only slightly faster. The website is compiled as a .NET 2.0 web application. Is there a known reason for this performance increase? Was there a change in the .NET 4.0 framework that improved the initial load time of websites into an application pool?   Hi all, I'm using Visual Studio .NET 2003, and I'm trying to convert a program written in purely ANSI characters to be independent of Unicode/Multi-byte characters. The program has a callback function of pcap_loop, called "got_packet". It's defined as void got_packet(u_char *user, const struct pcap_pkthdr *header, const u_char *cpacket) { USES_CONVERSION; _TUCHAR *packet; packet = A2T(cpacket); ... } However, I get the error message error C2440: 'type cast': cannot convert from 'const u_char *' to 'ATL::CA2WEX<>' How do fix this? • Access: Reading deleted record buffer

  According to the Access (2003) documentation, when you delete a record, it's placed in a buffer, then the BeforeDeleteConfirm event is raised, then the AfterConfirmDelete ad Delete events. In my table if a record is deleted, I need to add one of its field values (a quantity value) to a field in another table. I tried setting the quantity to a private variable in the Current event, but as soon as I delete click delete, it looks like the Current event fires again and resets my variable. How can I access the value of a field in a deleted record?

  I have a back-end MS Access 2002-2003 database which stores blog entries. I created a separate front-end database with the forms for entering blog posts into the backend database. Finally, I have a website utilizing ASP to display the blog entries. The website connects directly to the backend database using an OLEDB connection object. Whenever I open the form for creating a new post in MS Access, loading the blog post page on the website displays the error: Could not use "; file already in use. I would like to be able to display the older blog posts even though the newest one is in the process of being added.

• MSI File/Registry failures to Windows Server 2008/Windows 7

  I'm trying to deploy an application on Windows Server 2008 (SP2 x64) and Windows 7 (x64), using VS2005 Installer Project. The MSI version (I think) it the 2.0. Everything works fine, except that some registry keys and some files are not copied on the install machine. The MSI system doesn't notify about nothing (and I don't know whether MSI logs its operations). Are there incompatibilities between my MSI installer project and these new OSes? It seems to me that the OS protect itself for being modified in some part. For example, I'm trying to set the registry keys: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\WinLogon\SpecialAccounts\UserList\User but it is not created. In the same installer there are many other keys, which are created like expected (as they always did before on Windows XP and Windows Server 2003). What's going on?

  I have a webservice with .NET 1.1 (old school ASMX) and I am creating a client app to connect to it and use its services. From what I remember from the last time I had used Visual studio -which was 2003 version!- I can add a WebReference to it and easily use it. Tried it . it still works. but it looks like things have changed in 2008 and now we also have WCF. so I can add it as a Service Reference. but with this new method I could not find a way to create an Instance object to the ASMX service and call its methods... how do we accomplish the same thing with WCF?

  Some time ago I posted about a question about reading Excel files as a server process, to get around the tighter restrictions Microsoft have been applying on Office Automation. I now need to extend this, by finding methods/libraries to read other sorts of Office files in an automated way on a server. The applications I'm interested in are Word, Powerpoint, Project and to a lesser extent Word and Visio. I need to be able to support 97-2003 office files, and the newer open xml formats (e.g. xlsx, docx) at a very least. With regards to Word integration, I also need to be able to handle writing/reading RTF text. If anyone has any suggestions I'd be pleased to hear them. Thanks

I tried the following linked server method: SELECT * INTO db1.dbo.table1 FROM OPENROWSET('Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0', 'Driver={Microsoft Excel Driver (*.xls)};DBQ=c:\renju.xls', 'SELECT * FROM [sheet1$]') But it is returing an error as: OLE DB provider "Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0" for linked server "(null)" returned message "Could not find installable ISAM.". I'm using Excel 2003, and I've already added the linked server for "Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0."

  I have IIS 6.0 on Windows Server 2003. I installed .Net 3.5 and 4 beta 2. "Normal" asp things are working (perfect). But when I try to navigate to my service (/myServer/MyService.svc) I got a 404. Page not found. To be exact, I got a 404 2 "Web service extension lockdown policy prevents this request." I used ServiceModelReg.exe /ia to make sure that the extension I known and I checked the configuration using: admin-Tools, iis, home-tab, configuration, executable-box, and there: extension: .svc, path: c:\windows\microsoft.net\framework\v4.0.210... verbs: all verbs So everything seems ok. But I still get a 404-2

  (Using Windows 2000 and 2003 Server) We use forfiles.exe to delete backup .zip files older than n days, and it works great (command is a bit like below) forfiles -p"C:\Backup" -m"*.zip" -c"cmd /c if @ISDIR==FALSE del \"@PATH\@FILE\"" -d-5 If a .zip file fails to be created, I'd like to ensure that we don't end up with 0 .zip files in the backup after 5 days. Therefore, the command needs to be: "delete anything older than 5 days, but ALWAYS keep the most recent 5 files, EVEN if they themselves are older than 5 days" We can use forfiles.exe or another solution (although anything that is a slick one-liner is ALWAYS preferable to a script file). I would like to convert this to ADO so I do not have to reference the DAO object library. Here is the code ... • MS-Access nested DIR - check if a file exists elsewhere whilst looping through a folder

  I have used the DIR() command in Microsoft Access 2003 to loop through the files in folder A. This works fine, but I need to check if each file also exists in another location (folder B), and only process the file if it doesn't exist in folder B. The problem is that checking for the file existing in folder B also uses the DIR() function and this then resets or confuses the original one, with the result that no further files are found in folder A. Is there a way to check if a file exists without using DIR? Or, is there a way to have a separate instance of DIR? I suppose I could build a list of the files in folder A into an array and then process the entries in the array, but this seems rather 'clunky' Any suggestions for a better solution? Thanks

• ado.net slow updating large tables

  The problem: 100,000+ name & address records in an access table (2003). Need to iterate through the table & update detail with the output from a 3rd party dll. I currently use ado, and it works at an acceptable speed (less than 5 minutes on a network share). We will soon need to update to access 2007 and its 'non jet' accdb format to maintain compatability with clients. I've tried using ado.net datsets, but updating the records takes hours! We process 5-10 of these tables per day - so this cannot be a solution. Any ideas on the fastest way to update individual records using ado.net? Surely we didn't take such a hugh backward step with ado.net? Any help would be appreciated.

• SQL Server 2008 automated database drop, create and fill

  For the database in my project I have a drop/create script for the database, a script for creating tables and SPs and an Access 2003 .mdb file with some exported values. To set up the database from scratch I can use my SQL management studio to first run one script, then the other and lastly manually run the sort of tedious import task. But I would like to do this as automated as possible. Hopefully something like putting the three files in a folder along with a fourth script to execute. Looking something like: run script "dropcreate.sql" run script "createtables.sql" import "values.mdb" How is this done? I hope to avoid using SSIS and the like. The tricky this is of course the import of data, where I can't seem to find a simple way. It is also important that the files a left as they are and not embedded into anything.

• Disappearing Inlineshapes

  I frequently edit files that have numerous inlineshapes, one per paragraph. One of the edits I make is to eliminate "double" paragraph marks either using Search and Replace or a simple macro that performs the same operation (e.g., search for "^p^p" and replace with "^p"). This operation works fine in Word 97-2003 documents (.doc), but when I try it on .docx documents, I lose all of the inlineshapes. The .docx files seem to ignore the inlineshape, therefore seeing the paragraphs containing them as "empty". Search and Replace sees "^p^p", replaces it with "^p", and the graphic goes away. Any thoughts on how to work around this?

• Intermittent issue - IIS offering to donwload ASPX file instead of executing

  We're getting an intermittent problem with the homepage of our site when IIS will suddenly start offering to download the ASPX file instead of executing it. It happens about once a month, on a random basis. If I open the file in Notepad and re-save it (without making a single change to the code), IIS starts executing the script as normal and doesn't offer the download any more. I can't get my head round this, considering that we can't reproduce the problem. Also, I can't really play with it and test anything when the problem occurs as this is the homepage of the site and needs fixing asap. Any ideas what could be causing this? Files are written to the server over Filezilla FTP. Looks like the homepage is the only page affected. Server is Windows Server 2003, IIS 6.0 with all the latest patches (we actually run two of them, load balanced, and the problem can occur on either server on a random basis). Can't see anything in the Event logs or IIS log.

• Scheduled task username changed

  Hi, I created a user on our exchange server, but later changed the username. Now, when I create a scheduled task for that user, and change it's settings (run only when logged on), the username is automatically changed back to the old username. What's causing this and how do I make sure the correct, new username is used for the task (otherwise it won't run), security settings are okay. I did already log in with a different user to delete the profile on the computer and tried again with this user to no avail. The OS is windows xp, the exchange server is on windows server 2003. • IIS 6.0 - ASP Error 0126 Include file not found

  Hello, I have a Win Sever 2003 running IIS 6.0 which has only my main website on it and now I am trying to setup a test website which currently is an exact duplicate of the main site. When accessing my main site everything works fine, and has done for a long time. If I access the test site (through 'test.' subdomain) I get this error: Active Server Pages error 'ASP 0126' Include file not found /html/shop/asp/admin/inc/incWeeklySpecialswide3.asp, line 71 The include file '/html/asp/quickfindwithSuburbs31.asp' was not found. The file actually exists, and the paths are correct. I have enabled Parent Paths, replaced the include file path to the full path (http://foo.com/html/asp -etc.), removing the ' / ' at the start of the path and changing the code from ' include ' to ' virtual '. • SQL: ATER COLUMN to shorter CHAR(n) type

  I'm working with MS SQL SERVER 2003. I want to change a column in one of my tables to have fewer characters in the entries. This is identical to this question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2281336/altering-a-table-column-to-accept-more-characters except for the fact that I want fewer characters instead of more. I have a column in one of my tables that holds nine-digit entries. A developer previously working on the table mistakenly set the column to hold ten-digit entries. I need to change the type from CHAR(10) to CHAR(9). Following the instructions from the discussion linked above, I wrote the statement ALTER TABLE [MY_TABLE] ALTER COLUMN [MY_COLUMN] CHAR(9); This returns the error message "String or binary data would be truncated". I see that my nine-digit strings have a space appended to make them ten digits. How do I tell SQL Server to discard the extra space and convert my column to a CHAR(9) type?
